that's a really good deal for investors so why does he want twitter so badly? today british columbia he made this case. >> why make that offer? >> i think it's important that it be an inclusive arena for the speech. twitter has become the fact zero town square so people have the reality and perception they are able to speak freely within the bounds of the law. kennedy: he claims it's not about that. >> this is not a way to sort of make money. i think it's -- my strong sense is that having a public platform

billion offer for twitter. why would they turn it down? is it just because it's elon musk? >> one 100% because it's elon musk, there's no other reason. twitter, if you watch what they've done for the last six or 18 months, twitter is i think the beginning of a downward spiral and nobody likes to be swirled in the toilet, the idea you mentioned about potential poison pill option they have flooding the market with their shares, they know that this is at least being exposed for what it is. as somebody who works speaking every day for a living, the argument, the continued debate over what is free speech and what constitutes free speech and have free speech make society better, i think it's fantastic and we all need to be involved in those discussions every single day because it is so important to our democracy. the idea you mentioned max

[laughter] kennedy: richard, you bought some twitter today, didn't you? >> i did and here's the thing, the stock price went down even though elon musk is offering shareholders little over $50 a share. stock price dropped 11% today or excuse me, a little less but it's an interesting move, i'm here for it. here's the problem, according to reports from different sources, he doesn't have cash on hand so he will have to finance the cash and potentially by twitter and

wait and see what happens so there's a lot of unknowns here before we throw confetti at the idea. let's see if the mechanics are there. kennedy: he's the richest man in the world, i'm sure he can scrape together $43 billion even if it's just from other billionaires hate jeff bezos. i want to go back to that quote. this is a full quote, i'm frightened by the impact on society and politics is elon musk requires twitter. he seems to believe on social media anything goes for democracy to survive, we need more content moderation, not less. is that what we need for democracy to survive? >> it's really something, this whole thing is amazing even if none of this happens, it's amazing the spectacle is creating and i hope it happens but who knows? democracy is so important and

that's why we have to silence people from being able to give their opinions so others can't hear them so it's important everybody has the right to vote but we also don't want them to hear from say like the sitting president of the united states or sitting member of congress, those people we want kicked off the pot from but if i were max booth and advocated for seven wars over the last 20 years that led to millions of innocent people dying and trillions of dollars wasted and nothing but destroyed nations plus tens of thousands of our own soldiers killing themselves, i would want to silence my opposition as well. what is amazing is you on musk forced progressive neoliberal and neoconservative establishment to basically say that yes, they consider the idea of not having control of censorship to be a huge threat to them. he's also exposed more conservative right wing who have been saying that this is where we deviate from the free-market

types like myself, we need government to come in and regulate social media to solve this problem which is a real problem but all proposals for regulation would make it worse and not solve it and we have a potential solution from the marketplace and even if this doesn't work, who's to say a few elon musk and other billionaires buddies and several of them who feel the same way he does, maybe they come back with another offer and maybe this is the great solution to online censorship, we just need really rich people who actually believe in free speech to get involved, incredibly exciting. kennedy: liberation of voices to participate and not just people deemed appropriate by whoever is kind of an power of social media or not but it's not just twitter where conservatives are getting hosed. today republican national committee voted unanimously to withdraw on the presidential

debate. the committee chairwoman mcdaniel is pledging to find debate that forms for future republican nominees but with democrats boycott and could we be looking at a future without presidential debate? do we really need them, gary? >> i think we do. we talk about the extremes in this country whether it super healed progressives, conservatives like dave was talking about, six or 8% on either end of the political spectrum there is a vast middle of this country who still needs to be able to see and hear those people representing us whether in congress, federal office or whatever it is, i think we do need debate but what the republican national committee has to do, i like the idea and stand by the idea they need debate before voting begins, you

don't have people on the debate stage in the form of moderators who have worked for the candidates but you have to come up with an alternative. you can't just say we will find a new debate stage to make sure everything is fair. you'd better come up with the alternative and not just cross your arms and say i'm taking my ball and going home. there's got to be something in the plan. kennedy: there has to be more bold, right richard? [laughter] >> there definitely has to be more balls, i agree with everything you said. i would add here in lies the problem with the argument for looks at the end of the day you might have a debate commission how it is and that's why you work to fix it. the idea of leaving it together is likely at this time if it were happening this year, we likely cannot have a presidential debate and the main contention is the problem with the moderators but the last

presidential debate, everybody could agree with the former president had a problem with that, it's a little more of i don't like the questions how people perceive me as the president and less about the commission. kennedy: it wasn't just the moderators. dave, obviously there are a lot of problems with presidential debates, a lot of people are talking about running for the libertarian party presidential nomination, there are a lot of people liberty minded who would love to see that but how does someone like you get on the debate stage? the commission presidential debate exists to keep them functioning, to make sure there are not viable third party candidates on stage challenge the establishment so should the republican party leave the debate commission so something new can arise from the action?

>> i think that would be great. for the record, not everybody thinks chris wallace is but the truth, what you've had over the last few years, candidates have been drawn into the two big parties because of the rules rates against third-party. bernie sanders was essentially a third-party candidate. donald trump was essentially a third-party candidate, they just ran into democrat or republican party because it's the only way to get on the debate stages and get ballot access easy but from my perspective, i think we are in a new landscape in the idea the presidential debates, they are integrated. i agree i want to hear the candidate speak but i'd rather hear both of them on the drove joe rogan experience for three hours with honest questions from a regular person and give a ten minute answer.

rather than hear someone in the corporate press ask the same boring questions and they live for a minute and talk over each other. to meet, i don't know, if i were to run for something, i don't really care about this. i can go on rogan and these shows and talk to millions of people for hours and hours. this is besides the., the problem used to be we couldn't get our message out unless we got on the corporate press or the presidential debate but for libertarians, those days are over and we need to embrace the new world with more opportunities than ever before. kennedy: left turn opportunities into action and results. if we will have old white guys running against each other than i want to see what they do in the nfl combine, i want to see how they do in the 40-yard strength. i've done this before several times, i want to see both candidates download the pizza hut app in order a pizza and

whoever gets it delivered first gets to be president. i've said it before and will say it again and it makes me hungry every time. it game night, man panel sticking around. we will have more with them winners and losers. democrats might want debate, their policies steak and nothing to brag about right now. polls reflect that according to university poll. president biden approval rating is skyhigh, he's at 70%. [laughter] jk. record low of 33%, 54% disapprove of the president perform its. how can his party bounced back before the midterms? here with me now, real clear politics executive editor, tom bevan. nobody knows better than you about polls and how they are trending. how are things now for the president? >> pretty bad. it's hard to find a silver lining.

i was thinking earlier, i think the only over lining is the election is still six months away. everywhere you look for democrats whether the direction of the country, whether it's individual races and certainly the main problem is it's all about the economy and jobs. the administration is trying to do things to address that but they are not significant enough. biden going to iowa saying we will spend federal rule on ethanol for three months to give relief at the pump, it won't be enough to solve the problems they are facing with an electorate struggling day in and day out with gas prices and food prices and the rest. alas until something changes i think we will see this same path and it's a path that will lead to a bloodbath in november. kennedy: we seen is numbers dropped eight-point just in the last few weeks.

is it the response to the war in ukraine driving that? is it inflation keeps going in the wrong direction? are we starting to see more movement on the southern border? is there one driver? >> it inflation and the economy and while the administration likes to tout the good news on the economy, low unemployment rates and etc. those are not the numbers we are focused on. we got to horrendous inflation numbers on the consumer and wholesale side. the highest on record in 40 years and people are feeling that in their everyday lives. whatever biden does even supreme court appointment, that gave him a bit of a bump but on the day he gave the state of the union was 40.6% and average, today he's at 40.4 so whatever bump he got his phone and he's back to where he started would translate a loss of 30, 40, 50 seats in the house, 32546 senate seat and who knows how many governors and

state legislative seats around the country. it would be a very bad night for the democrats if he can't get his job approval rating around 50. kennedy: and everyone knows, he's already kind of a late start, there's no way he runs again in 2024 and anyone who says he's going to, they are lying to himself and anyone else on television or in public. you look at this whole thing, there's no way you can boost is party before the midterms and i don't know what you do if all you do is blame and shift and gaslight. your propaganda will run very thin so if you look at the numbers alone from covid data on states that open, republican states and state with the most brutal lockdowns, that has to be

bad news for democrats. >> it is although covid is disappearing as an issue, the other concern obviously crime is there but immigration, that's back in the headlines not in a good way. killing title 42, which even vulnerable democrats new hampshire, down at the border filming of video saying we got to do something, kyrsten sinema and others, she's not up for reelection but the other democrats are, rafael warnock, he's about as progressive as you get. this is going to be bad news for the democrats so they are not doing what they need to where they have control and that's ultimately the problem, the american people know the policies of the biden administration let us to this place where they face these obstacles and pressures and anxiety and when you control all three, two houses of congress and the white house, the voters have nobody else to make pay for

for something ray kelly did as police commissioner when we got the number down to 600 murderers and people said it's a big city, he said we can get it down to 500 or 40300. i think we need to get that mindset back and say we will use all law enforcement tools and judicial tools and mental health tools to identify people who are dangerous and deter them from crime and incapacitate them through mental health treatment, inpatient beds, rehabilitation for drug addiction. whatever it is but we need the opportunity by taking away the prosecution of low-level offenses. we take away the opportunity from the person robbing a pharmacy over and over again, shampoo bottles and feed their addiction. we used to have the opportunity to say if you want to avoid prosecution, here's a rehabilitation program.

without the opportunity for prosecution, we are getting rid of these tools and seeing dangerous people and people a danger to themselves and others because of mental illness on the streets and there are other reasons as well. kennedy: it's not just new york city that's spent so much money on mental health initiatives. the nyc program had virtually no results to show. it's not just a matter of throwing money at the problem. l.a., seattle, they can show you the same thing, and massive homeless problem even though they spent a lot of money on it because they are not spending money in the right way. >> is true in any degree of mental illness is of concern but we need to deal with the small population within the small population of people with mental illness who are dangerous and need supervision in order to not be at risk themselves.
