with guns it will take an uber geek like him to fix it. lydia hu with more. reporter: good evening, liz. elon musk is a critic of censorship and bias on the platform that crusade has been driving this massive buyout. on news of the acquisition he said today, quote, free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy and twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated. twitter has tremendous potential. i look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it. now the tech company agreed to be acquired for $44 billion, which is 54.20 a share. this purchase price, which musk has always said is his best and final offer, it is a 38% premium to twitter's closing stock price the day before musk announced his 9% stake. now while twitter's chairman says the board believes this deal is the best path forward

the question now is what exactly will the world's richest man do with the social media platform? he has pledged changes like a softer stance on content moderation, edit feature for tweets, an open source algorithm. it will be up to him to turn a profit, something the company has struggled with for much of the last decade. part of that means he will have to maintain and grow the user base amid this transition, something, liz that could be a challenge as the likes of former president trump tells fox news he has no plans on going back to the platform that banned him last year. elizabeth: interesting, lydia hu, thanks so much. good to see you. joining us from the heritage foundation, tech policy center director there, former facebook analyst, kara frederick. it is great to have you on. we want to dig into this, can you explain this, it is coming out of "bloomberg news." it shows there was a free-for-all at twitter. musk makes a bid for twitter, right? when twitter accepts the bid,

they immediately shut down, lock down any changes to its algorithm to stop unauthorized changes, meaning product changes to the algorithm updates to it. unless they're business critical, unless the vice president approves them. who is making changes to the algorithm? was anybody making changes? were they censoring anybody they didn't like? >> it appears to me that way. tough remember that twitter led the way when it came to suppressing the hunter biden laptop story. so they have an idealogical monopoly along with the other tech companies that they work in concert withthe other thing they are worried about, the open algorithm. this is radical transparency elon musk wants to make good on. if his rhetoric is to be believed, that free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy and take the bore gore, open up the algorithm, epup the black box.

elizabeth: it's a corporate black box, but if people below the level of vice president can change the algorithm, that means willy-nilly, if you're a worker and walk in there and change it, censor something you don't like what you heard. means twitter poisoned the national discourse for years. we shouldn't look at the abuse. it is so hyped, hysteria on twitter is out of control. the media has hysteria too, cara, the democrat melt down. they made the twitter bid, acceptance of the offer was a 180. this was always a plausible idea for musk to take it over. it has been a go nowhere stock since the ipo in 2013. it is stuck in the same trading range of 10 to $20 for nearly 10 years. the media made it, oh, musk is taking it over. no, it was always a plausible bid. >> and the fact that the board had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do this to me, looks like earnings call they

have to plan on thursday that was going to be pretty grim for them. the fact they had to all of a sudden make a decision, say, okay, we'll have to loosen our grip on the flow of information in order not to be sued into the ground by our shareholders if elon were to drop his shares, the stock would then tank. so i think that the fact that this was such a fight, that the world's richest man is singular man at a singular moment and twitter is not even the biggest social media company either, and it was this much of a struggle that tells you all you need to know that the fact they wanted their censorship, they wanted the status quo. they didn't care about maximizing shareholder value. they cared about their grip on the flow of information. the fact that elon had to pry their hands off of it, it really said something about the state of free speech in america and what big tech oligarchs are doing to it. elizabeth: exactly, kara. clinton labor secretary robert reich is getting hysterical over this.

elizabeth: let's welcome back to the show congresswoman nicole malliotakis. great to have you on. christopher ray, talked to 60 minutes. made a really disturbing disclosure that murders against police officers are about double the rate of the rest of the u.s. it is running at about 60% increase versus what is going on to the rest of the country. what do you say to this? >> it is completely unfortunate. it is really a result of the anti-police rhetoric and the pro-crime policies that are

being put in place in democrat-run cities like mine. here in new york we see a city council that cut nypd funding by a billion dollars. we have bail laws that are releasing people continuously back on to the street. in fact if a police officer is assaulted and they arrest that person, that person will be released before the police officer's shift is even over. in washington, we have a group of politicians who refuse to condemn the defund the police movement. i put up a resolution, every single democrat voted against condemning, plans to dismantle, defund the police. that is a very bad message. it emboldens criminals who feel they can get away with it. quite frankly they're getting away with doing a lot of crime we're seeing f police officers are not safe, how is the public supposed to be safe? elizabeth: how can they not support what you're doing? because attacks on minority communities are skyrocketing.

we've got crimes against black americans, are soaring in black communities. watch the fbi director on what is going on with cops. watch this. >> violence against law enforcement in this country is one of the biggest phenomenons i don't think gets enough attention. officers are being killed at the rate of one almost every five days. one of the phenomenon we saw last year an alarming percentage of the 73 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty last year were killed through things like being ambushed. or shot while out on patrol. elizabeth: you see that? cops are getting ambushed. congresswoman, let's get this straight, black lives matters, go ahead, comment on that. we'll get to the next thing. go ahead. >> i was going to simply say here in new york we have a governor who appointed a parole board that released well over 16 cop killers.

state university of new york just had a cop killer, killed two police officers, was released by the governor's parole board go speak at a university. he spoke on a policy forum talking about being a political prisoner. the guy was a cop killer. they're going to put him on a pedestal and allow him to speak to our young people at our state universities? that is what is wrong. if people do not like it, they have to stop voting for these very individuals like our governor who enabling this type of activity in our state. elizabeth: step up to what your parents are paying tuition for at these colleges and universities that are priced out through middle-class families and pouring poison into the minds of students. let's get this straight black lives matter says defund cops in the middle of a border collapse and a crime wave. 18 were killed in police custody. police brutality is wrong. blm won't talk about 9200 crimes, homicides, murders, blacks killing each other.

elizabeth: joining us now veteran washington, d.c. watcher, columnist, liz peek. >> thanks for having me. >> good to have you, the secret service claims it has no record at all of who is seeing biden at his two houses in delaware? shouldn't we know about this? there is a grand jury probe into hunter biden right now. >> first of all let's agree it's a preposterous notion that the secret service doesn't know who is coming to visit joe biden and isn't keeping a record of it. obviously they have been told not to make that available, so yes, it does raise all kinds of questions. what is joe biden trying to hide? who is coming to see joe biden? who has access to the president of the united states? we have heard to your point, a lot of about how we have no dealings with the associates of hunter biden. he never talks to joe, to hunter biden about his business affairs but we know that's not

true. so how some of those people who were involved in some of hunter's activities overseas actually been to, what we could call the weekend white house to see joe biden? we have no idea. it is clear they don't want us to know something. the reasonable question, what is it that they're trying to hide? i assume also, liz, there is a lot of lobbying going on probably on the weekend. remember when obama turned out to have hosted the head of one of our biggest labor unions more times than he hosted any other person in his white house? i am assuming that joe biden has certain people influential people who are coming to ask favors. that is pretty typical but i think the public actually has a right to know. elizabeth: it is outrageous. what he knew, there was federal, federal appeals court ruling, opinion was led, written by merrick garland, that said the president in 2013 under the obama white house, has basically

a right to privacy but and that, they didn't need to release the visitor logs. i think to the white house but, you know, those logs, the secret service is an agency. they should be released under the freedom of information act, right? it runs up against that, liz. so you're right. >> yeah. elizabeth: who knows if they're meeting at biden's delaware house to talk about hunter biden and the doj probe. that is in delaware, that probe is going on there with a grand jury in delaware. that is biden's home state. you make a good point. voters may want to know what individuals, lobbying firms are getting access. we're talking about trillions of dollars in government spending too. >> yes, exactly. not just the voicer to logs. early on, the biden white house was not publishing which always is done, the schedules of the president and the vice president. they took down the comment line. they took down the citizen petition line. there are all kinds of things
