"the evening edit" starts right now. ♪. elizabeth: welcome to the show. we begin with stocks. the dow drops almost 900 points. the s&p now in a bear market. the national average for gas hits that new psychological benchmark. it's a heavy one. it is five dollars. hitting that for the first time. wall street is on edge. here is what is going on. stocks are getting hammered because traders are trying to sus out what the fed is going to do. they're betting the fed will raise interest rates faster and by larger amounts. they're trying to stop the 40-year high in inflation. the street is talking potential rate hikes of maybe 1.75 points by september. now if this happens, it would be the first time since 1994 the fed would make such a draconian move. now mortgage demand is already falling to the lowest level in more than 22 years. edward lawrence in washington with more. reporter: liz, consumer

sentiment at the lowest level since they have been keeping track of this data. that may force the federal reserve to notice, especially with the latest inflation report coming in very hot. now the response from president joe biden, to lower expectations. on friday he told a group of democratic donors, we are going to live with this inflation for a while. it is going to come down gradually but we're going to live with it for a while. so again today, the white house press secretary likened that movie in the leg grow movie saying everything is awesome. >> we're seeing the economy in a stronger place than it's been, historic place it has been in decades. so the president is going to continue to do that, to do that work. reporter: republicans saying there is a simple fix to this. just change energy policies. >> we're looking at record inflation and gas prices that we've never seen before in our lifetimes. go back to the jimmy carter era, to see this type of financial trouble port perform.

american energy industry. that is where all of this starts. it is having profound effect. why he continues to double down on the policies that are hurting americans is beyond me. elizabeth: to the congressman's point, karl, who is in charge of the white house? >> you know, i don't know. supposedly the president but look, this is not a problem of who is in charge. we know who is ultimately in charge. it is him. he is responsible for the actions of people underneath him. they perpetuate this myth that this inflation issue is all because of ukraine. take a quick look at the numbers. january of 21 when president biden came into office inflation was 1.4% a year. by january 2022, 7.48%. by may, 8.582% inflation. that means that 84% of the difference between january and today occurs before, a month before ukraine is ever invaded

by putin. so the idea that this is somehow related to what is happening in russia, primarily, primarily related to that is completely bogus and why the administration continues to perpetuate this, due to their policies of overspending, pumping too much demand into the economy. inflation, classic definition too much money chasing too few goods. that is what happened because of their policies. elizabeth: threw a lot of hot money into a locked up on my after democrat shutdowns destroyed 22 million jobs, ukraine, all of that. to karl's point, americans, wall street are afraid there is no end to stop inflation. the democrat thought experiment policies in academia are broken. they want to go faster. one thing i can say right now we're focused on winning the majority in the midterms. americans are asking for this craziness to stop. we'll take the majority in the house of representatives and we'll stop the slide. this far movement to the left has got to come to an end because it is destroying the american dream and seeing families hurting. elizabeth: we got reports, right, we got reports, karl, ron desantis, mike pence, tom cotton, they're talking about running in 2024. we have this, former top official for obama, he is david axelrod, he says biden's age will be a major issue, karl. david gergen said the same thing. americans are feeling that we're being run by people that should retired already. we're fighting old blood feuds that date back to generation. >> for over a year that biden will not be the democratic

if this had been a liberal supreme court justice like ruth bader ginsburg and her life was threatened, nancy pelosi would have hearings on the matter. instead they look the other way. elizabeth: congressman, this is hair on fire moment. we have assassination attempt on justice kavanaugh. if the roe v. wade opinion comes out the streets could explode. and their homes, their lives, their families are now at risk. why is it taking so long to give them profession? we're not a third world country. we're the leading light of democracy in the world. why is this going on? why not push forward with the attorney general now to stop this? >> because the wrong people are in charge, liz. because nancy pelosi and chuck schumer are in charge. this is ridiculous. this is matter that should have been addressed not even weeks or months ago but years ago. there is only nine supreme court justices. the president has plenty of protection. he should have it. all nine of our supreme court justices whether liberal or conservative need that protection as well. as you just said we're not a third world nation. we're not a banana republic.

to do with energy. it happens to be a larger meeting taking place in saudi arabia. that's the reason i'm going. it has to do with national security for them, for israelis. i have a program, anyway. it has to do with much larger issues than having to do with the energy. elizabeth: so why go? why is the president going? i mean gas is up 17 days straight nationwide under biden? the new white house plan, blame u.s. oil and gas, blame saudi arabia. >> right. elizabeth: when he inherited a economy first time was energy independent. >> that's right. elizabeth: why is he going to saudi arabia then? >> there is no sense in going there. he should be spending time here talking to producers in the united states figuring out howe we bring more supply to the market space, get prices down, incentivize companies to produce locally. rewind two years ago the entire nation except for california was energy independent. unfortunately on day one during

♪. elizabeth: okay. let's welcome to the show gop strategist ford o'connell. ford, i think we may have found the biggest conflict of interest of all involving the bidens profiteering. the president is on the road now, ford, with a media blitz touting one of his few successes, that multitrillion dollar infrastructure deal but we're digging into the documents. ford, we're finding revelations from hunter biden's laptop about how hunter biden and james biden in 2017 sought to sell the family's name, sought to sell access to joe biden while he was vice president to make big money off of both sides of obama's infrastructure spending with u.s. states and china, a china joint venture, when china is seeking to rule the world in infrastructure. >> well, you're absolutely right, liz.

documents indicate joe biden was directly involved in hunter and jim biden's dealings. it appears he used his office of vp to benefit the family, potentially benefit him circle personally. i will be honest if joe biden was a republican president this would be the biggest story in the country and democrats would be screaming for hearings on capitol hill. elizabeth: this is a major conflict of interest. hunter biden, james biden, are trying to profit from both sides of obama's nearly $50 billion in spending on infrastructure. then on the other side hunter and james were making money from china who wanted in on this infrastructure spending. they made anywhere from six million, nbc reports it was $11 million from both china and ukraine? >> it is absolutely amazing how brazen the biden family was to solicit money directly from the chinese communist party with respect to these infrastructure deals. as you know, liz, this is a, not only a conflict of a interest

but this is a national security problem because china believes through the belt and road initiative, if they control their rivals infrastructure, they can control other populations around the world. we're talking potentially about projects that included laguardia airport and minnesota rail. this is a very big thing. elizabeth: so james biden and hunter biden are trying to let china inside of the u.s. to dominate u.s. infrastructure. let's go through it t happened in may of 2017. james biden emails hunter biden, is on this email. he is talking about connecting top democrats across the nation with china's big player in china's belt and road push, again to dominate world infrastructure that was cefc. this is china's conglomerate. it is backed by chinese communist military and intelligence. they're talking chinese investment in critical u.s. infrastructure in new york, virginia, minnesota and california. ford, they were talking bridges, highways, railroads, airports, virginia's port for ships,
