jackie: good evening. edward lawrence is at the white house. reporter: if you believe him the economy was extremely good going forward. atlanta fed did. gd will decrease by 2.1%. i asked the white house about recession. >> first do we believe we're in recession, no, that is my answer to you on that. we held steady 3.6 unemployment rate. consumer spending remains strong and above pre-pandemic trends. business investment remains strong, household balance sheets remain strong. we do not believe we're in a recession. reporter: however 88% of americans believe the country is going in the wrong direction. top concerns, inflation, gas prices and economy. the president making his case. reporter: we made incredible congress, progress on the economy from where we're a year-and-a-half ago. we have a long way to go because of inflation, i call it the putin tax increase. putin because of gasoline and

balance sheets look so good right now. i will talk from personal experience. my wife and i looked at our balance sheet with the huge losses in stocks that we own in our 401(k) plans and, we lost a couple hundred thousand dollars. so our balance sheet is looking worse than ever, not better than ever. and i agree with what you just said, jackie. i think what is really unsettling to the financial markets right now is the president is a man without a plan. in fact all of the things he is talking about right now in terms of solving problems are just variations of this crazy "build back better" plan. remember that was the 4 trillion-dollar spending bill that he wanted to pass back in the winter and spring. and sew it is troubling that they don't come up with some more centrist solutions that maybe republicans could buy into that would get this economy moving again. like maybe a real tax cut. maybe ending, let's suspend the war on american energy right now and policies like that would

have positive impact. jackie: quite the contrary, steve, i think they see the midterms and you the corner, let's try to spend as much as we can before the tide turns. >> exactly. jackie: this is our last shot at it. to your point about retirement accounts, $3 trillion out of iras and 401(k)s alone. $3 trillion. i'm not talking about pensions, everything else that the average american is invested in, just out of that segment of people's retirement accounts. it's criminal. congressman, i want to come back to you because transportation secretary pete buttigieg playing the blame game as well talking about the pain at the pump. he is saying it is all about the oil companies. this administration can't get their stories straight but watch this. >> when it comes to the sky-high gas prices drivers are mad about it, i'm mad about it, the president is mad about it, oil executive companies are thrilled. jackie: oil companies are not

thrilled. their break even is in the 30s. much rather have oil in the 50s where they make in the profit to invest in the future where people are not pointing fingers at them looking at all the profits they're not happy about it. but this administration created a situation where they can't effectively and efficiently do their job. that is why the american people are paying more at the pump. >> look, oil executives have been told by joe biden he is going to eliminate fossil fuels prematuritily before we're ready to make that transition to renewables. we have no way to generate the renewables to power all the electric cars, our homes, our industries. we need baseline power, one of the cheapest, best, cleanest ways to do that is through natural gas. by unleashing an american industry as steve more recommends we will produce energy, get back up to 13 million barrels a day, clean lng to help our partners around allies here in europe that will benefit prices here at home.

he has a war on energy. he proposed 145 billion doll mars new taxes on the energy industry. he says he wants to put them out of business. that is a little hard to have certainty when you're facing no approvals for new pipelines, no real approvals for leasing on federal lands, no encouragement from the administration. jackie: you're absolutely right. steve moore, i want to give the final word to you because in the monmouth university poll, 88% of people said the country was headed in the wrong direction. 57% of people felt hurt by the policies of the federal government, that those policies hurt their families. >> jackie, did you say 88%? jackie: yes. >> i've been in this game a long time since the early '80s, i've never seen numbers that bad. by the way those are worse than the numbers that jimmy carter faced. so americans are feeling the pain. there is no spinning this right now. biden needs a radical change in direction. he keeps doubling down on the

♪. jackie: the highland park shooting suspect appearing in court for the first time this morning after officials charged him with seven counts of first-degree murder following monday's parade shooting that left seven dead and dozens more wounded. garrett tenney is live in highland park, illinois, with the latest for us. hi, garrett. reporter: jackie, today we learned that the alleged gunman waived his miranda rights when he was taken into custody and shared details with investigators how he carried out the attack. in court prosecutors said the 21-year-old suspect emptied two full clips of ammo on the crowd at monday's 4th of july parade, pausing to reload each time until he fired more than 70 shots in total. then a few hours later the suspect almost carried out a second attack. nearly 150 miles away in madison, wisconsin, at another 4th of july celebration. >> it appears when he drove to madison he was driving around.

however he did see a celebration that was occurring in madison. he seriously contemplated using the firearm he had in his vehicle to commit another shooting. i can't speak to why he decided to many could back from madison. there are indications that he didn't put enough planning forward to commit another attack. reporter: the suspect also allegedly dumped his cell phone while he was near madison which the fbi recovered and is now processing for more information. we're also learning the gunman passed four separate background checks to buy firearms in 2020 and 2021 despite police flagging him as a clear and present danger in 2019. that came after a family member reported the suspect threatened to kill his entire family. illinois state police say no action was taken because none of the family members wanted to move forward with a complaint which could have triggered the state's red flag laws and prevented the suspect from buying a gun. despite that incident, three months later the suspect's

father sponsored him when he applied for and be obtained a firearms i.d. card to obtain a gun. his parents have not spoken but saying that the shoot something terrible tragedy and our hearts and prayers go out to everybody. officials have identified all seven victims whose lives were stolen monday. their ages range from 35 to 88. among them kevin irene that mccarthy a husband and wife came to the parade to celebrate with their two-year-old son aden. aden was found wandering the streets alone after his parents were killed. he only survived because his dad shielded him with his body. a gofundme as raised 2 1/2 million dollars. he is charged with seven counts of first degree murder. the prosecutors say they expect to file dozens of additional charges during the coming weeks. jackie: garrett tenney, thanks for bringing us up to date on

that. violence in soft on crime cities. look at dramatic video, mob in chicago, 100 people swarming a police vehicle, jumping on the hood, breaking the windshield, throwing rocks, bricks, fireworks. joining me florida congresswoman kat cammack of house homeland security committee. great to see you, congresswoman as always. stick with the highland park shooting for a moment. there are some people looking at this incident, many others across the country saying we need stricter gun control. the problem here though as this continues to unfold that we're finding the red flag laws were not triggered. the background checks were done but didn't raise issues they should have been raised. not only did authorities fail the suspect, the family, the victims here, when he came to his house, tried to commit suicide, they took the knives out without somehow letting anybody else know that this incident occurred that he had a mental health problem and then

you look at the family as well knowing he has got trouble, not saying anything, not doing anything about it. when they say we need stricter gun control, why can't we work with what we have, function and execute properly? well that is 100% right. i mean we know that gun control laws empower criminals and all of our hearts break collectively for the victims of this terrible tragic incident but as you pointed out these measures did nothing to prevent the violence that took place and we need to stop talking about the weapon and get to the heart of the issue which is in this case the shooter, the person who perpetrated this violence. it is the root issue of mental illness in this country that is going unaddressed by the left while they continue to wage war against law-abiding citizens for exercising their constitutional rights. no one wants to see violence in this country or in their communities but people intent on doing evil things will do it by

any means necessary, with a car, with knives, with crock pots, with fertilizer. i don't see people who have been driving drunk all of sudden saying, well it was the car's fault. no. we need to get back to the root issue here. that is why i will oppose every single gun control measure because all it does is take weapons and means to protect one's self and their families by empowering criminals and making it harder for people trying to follow the law to actually pro-tech themselves. jackie: you make excellent points. i think another issue with what we're seeing across the country with respect to violence, not necessarily mass shootings like this, also these defund the police movements, everything we've seen with respect to soft on crime policies. i don't think we triggered of the video of the mob in chicago, that video that we had but you sigh situations like this. you want to see people be arrested. you want to see prosecutors to put them in jail. if there were tougher bars set, people knew there were consequences for their actions,

i believe they would stop doing things like this? >> absolutely. and as the wife of a first responder my husband is a 15 year firefighter and swat medic. he deals with the worst situations that our communities faces. and has for years. what we know, is that the same people who are calling for tougher so-called gun control, are the same ones who are fighting to defund the police, so they not only want to defund very people who are protecting our communities but then they want you to be virtually defenseless with no ability to protect yourself or your family. when you talk to law enforcement, they are frustrated, that is why we have record suicides, we have greatest number of assaults and deaths of our law enforcement officers on record because of this dangerous rhetoric. we also are seeing the effects with the defund movement of retention issues and retirement. so we've got to get back to the basics.

oil and gas and coal sector and allow them to produce the energy we need that would bring undo the prices of everything but what does joe biden do? he would rather go to iran and venezuela beg them to produce more rather than go to north dakota and texas. joe biden needs to look at a mirror in the white house if he wants to find the problem or solution for inflation. jackie: congressman, he has a pretty good point at least when it comes to oil and gas and when it comes to tariffs as well. the real issue with china right now, it comes back to joe biden isn't necessarily the tariffs but the supply chain crisis we've been dealing with he said he would solve when he took office. nothing happened. that is the worst part of the goods coming in from china. he needs to put food on peoples tables at normal cost and keep the price of gas down. >> how does that food get on your table? all the products that show up at the supermarket get there on semitrucks that drive with diesel. jackie: yeah. >> diesel is like 5.65, 70 a gallon right now so senator cotton is dead on. if you don't do what you can do

right now with the stroke of a pen president biden could unleash america energy independence, do the things that the trump administration did, allow the keystone pipeline to operate, allow for the domestic production of oil and gas, pull back the regulations on oil and gas and you would see everyday goods at the supermarket drop drastically when the price of diesel and gas drops. that is how all the products get to the supermarket. jackie: yeah. >> it has underlying effect on overall inflation when we get across the country. jackie: i am glad you brought that up. oil and gas goes into everything you do. not just what you put in the tank for the car to go on vacation. it is also transportation costs for big businesses. it is jet fuel. the airlines are experiencing this as well. it even goes down to the milk jug, right? oil and gas are used to make plastic, all these other materials bringing cost of these goods up as well. yet the president stands there, he continues to blame inflation

and gas problem we're experiencing on vladmir putin, which some of it is, certainly not all of it. it started well before that invasion and they have no clear plan to fix it. >> because they are run by the leftist progressive wing of the party that wants nothing that is carbon emissions, has this left-wing agenda. he did it on day one and stopped the production of oil and gas in the united states and he could do that with a stroke of a pen from the white house today but he refuses to do that. i had hope the american people will hold him accountable for that on november, the midterm elections this year. jackie: final point, another china related headache if you will for the president, those business dealings between the foreign power, his own son hunter biden. top house republican james comer demand janet yellen provide information on those transitions. excuse me. >> transactions. jackie: yeah. >> so we absolutely have to get the house back. the reason why we have to get the house back we don't have the

authority to subpoena any of those records. we don't have the authority to do the investigative work. this doj is completely corrupt is not going to do that because it's a politicized doj obviously not going to investigate hunter biden. we need a win to win the midterm elections. once we do we can investigate all the information and get it in front of the american public and let the american public decide what they think joe biden didn't, did know once they hear all the voice mails, emails, all the traffic that occurred, pictures together. it is clear joe biden knew exactly what hunter biden was doing in his business deals with china. jackie: there is that voice mail where we hear the president himself talking about he said he never talked to his son about any of this. then he is acknowledging it on the voice mail. we've got a sound bite. peter doocy asking the press secretary about this she turns around and she will not comment on it. let's play that. >> why is there a voice mail of the president talking to his son

about his overseas business dealings if the president has said he has never spoken to his son about his overseas business dealings? >> well first i will say that, what the president said stands, so if that is what the president said that is what stands and second -- >> the voice mail, "new york times" article concerning hunter biden business dealings. and says, i think you're clear. how is that not him talking to his son about his overseas business dealings? >> we're not from this podium, i'm not going to talk about alleged materials from the laptop. >> are you disputing it is the president's voice on the voice mail. >> i will not talk about alleged materials on the laptop. >> are you saying then that it is not -- >> i refer you to his son's representative. >> she is not going to talk about it. we all listened to the voice mail. we heard his voice. >> yeah. the american people know exactly what is going on there. and hunter biden needs to be held accountable for all of the crimes he has committed, all the evidence that is on that laptop and only way we get to the

we likely are but taxes are a lot. these blue states used to be able to hold people hostage. i know family members of mine had no choice but to live in silicon valley if they want of the income with those jobs. the pandemic literally changed the dynamic and probably has changed to stay. it's going to be hard because the blue states tax people who had no choice to live anywhere else now to get people back there probably going to have to lower taxes. >> right and moody's analysis gave us a sense of what happened here analysis of aqua fax credit report, they state they gained the most population are all red. florida, texas, north carolina. the states that lost the most population, you guessed it. california, new york, illinois.

i happened to be stuck in new york during the pandemic, nothing i could do. if i had a choice, i probably would have left as well but many i knew went south and took advantage of having a better lifestyle, paying less taxes and be more free and paying cheaper housing costs. i could go on and on. >> better weather, exactly. >> the weather, thank you. >> now i'm in florida. i used to be in new york all the time at the studio, i do miss you guys a lot. it's funny they asked me if i want to go to the studio. wait a second, i can do it for my living room so it's changed how we live and i was in month ago and that's a tax statement and i get it. it's been proven out and i think the midterms are going to be huge and blue states are going to have to do something to incentivize people to come back. there are things i miss about the city but when you think about taxes, you see differences in your paycheck and it's hard to go back. we are on the verge of a recession, fade raising interest

rates, credit card bills are getting hotter, higher and it's harder to service the debt and harder to run a business, costs are going up. the labor market is going to get flak because of what the fed is trying to do so we could see some of this reverberate back where employers insist people come into officers but even headquarters have found the state so i think it will be a lasting tradition. >> in the states where businesses are left, new york city is one, employers are hard-pressed to force the place to go back to the office when i have to deal with crime and issues commuting on the streets of new york city as well so this is part of what's dragon everything on. talk about the economy for a moment because this is something this administration is touting at the brakes but we got new information, 11.3 million open jobs in this country, we have evidence few people, fewer
