a lowering of expectations when it comes to economic growth. everyone from the president to the treasury secretary to economic advisors here at the white house are saying we are not in a recession but a transition which brings slower economic growth. >> we're not going into recession in my view. we are, the employment rate is still one of the lowest we've had in the history. it is in 3.6 area. we still find ourselves with people investing. my hope is we go from this rapid growth to steady growth. reporter: white house economic advisors trying to add nuanced data to definition of a recession. republicans say instead of arguing about definitions fix the economy. >> they're trying to redefine definition, negative growth of two quarters is not a recess. they can redefine it all they want. americans know what we experienced under the leadership of president trump and what we're seeing now and they can feel it.

reporter: critical number of first read of the second quarter gdp by the government, that comes out on thursday. liz. elizabeth: edward lawrence thank you so much. joining us now senator bill hagerty from senate banking. great to have you on, sir. what is your reaction to that report. >> more spin coming out of the white house, liz. what will happen on thursday, we'll probably read a negative 1.5% gdp growth. that is another straight consecutive quarter to quarter decline. that is the technical answer for what we hit recession. we've been on the precipice of a recession under joe biden. i cannot imagine they will have the gall to try to redefine things technically. when you go to people in tennessee, my home state, ask them what they're feeling, prices at the pump like they never experienced before. growing to the grocery store with record high prices. massive margin compression for corporate america. consumer price index, at one level, seen the producer price index much higher that means margin compression. companies will go bankrupt at

elizabeth: breaking news coming out of washington. the house sergeant-at-arms wants to give house lawmakers $10,000 each to install personal security systems at their homes. joining us now, congressman jim jordan, ranking member of house judiciary. so, congressman, can you talk to us about this? wasn't it true that nancy pelosi delayed for weeks the money to help out with security for the supreme court justices and their own families in the wake of protests at their homes? >> sure did. yes. she waited four weeks and, after, you know, after there had already been threats online, protests at the justices homes. they posted where justice barrett's children went to school, posted where her family attended church on sunday morning. she waited four weeks after the

senate unanimously passed the legislation, she wait the four weeks to pass it in the house. what happened in the four weeks time frame? there was assassination attempt on sitting supreme court justice, justice kavanaugh. they waited, now she wants to move quicker on this. we already get the ability to use this, happened a few years ago, ability to use campaign funds to put in security and provide sort of security measures for you as member of congress. so, but yeah, seems a little different here, of course double standard has been there all along. you and i condemned violence every time it happened. we condemned it on january 6, the summer of 2020 but democrats they don't seem to want to do that, not to mention defund the police, get rid of bail and call rioters and looters peaceful protesters. that is the environment they created. >> you talked about how they normalize violence. now the federal government had to step in to arrest the suspect on the attack on congressman lee

zeldin after new york state let him out on no bail. david jacubonis was arrested. new york put up no cash bail for myriad number of crimes like second degree homicide, assault. governor kathy hoke full of new york, democrat, says it will save taxpayers money. stop blaming it for skyrocketing crime. >> well, but look what is happening in new york city. look what is happening in every major urban area, crime is skyrocketing, literally went from couple weeks time, crazy left-wing policies, relatively safe streets to record levels of crime in every major urban area. i saw the news on your channel, the pedestrian was hit, see on video someone running over to the pedestrian, not to help them, steal their wallet this is terrible.

becoming, feels like endemic. happening, what is happening now. >> yeah. yeah, again, when you normalize it. when you have the leader of the senate, stand on supreme court steps, you unleashed a whirlwind, you will pay the price, have pelosi wait four weeks to get protection to supreme court justices families, looters attack police, when you call them peaceful protesters you create an environment where this crazy stuff happens. only way to get tough on it enforce the law. when people are criminals you have to lock them up. that is good old-fashioned law enforcement. good old-fashioned prosecution for people who commit crimes. unfortunately the left doesn't believe that anymore. but the country gets it. and again i think it is going to be one of many reasons why they will show up in a big way on november 8th and change course in this our great nation. elizabeth: congressman, this story coming in, speaking out from behind bars, anonymous prisoner in baltimore.

"the financial times" are reporting this. the warnings are much stronger than in the past. china is sensitive about this this is the same month as august anniversary of the founder of the communist peoples liberation army. why is nancy pelosi going now? taiwan dominates world manufacturing in computer chips. what is she going to talk about with taiwan? >> that is a good question. in the main i would say i don't necessarily think the speaker should be constrained from visiting wherever she wants to. she is the speaker of the house. however, there is sort of this cloud of what is going on with as you mentioned the chips and this legislation that we have. now she is going to taiwan which is the leading producer of chips. there are some questions that have to be asked. generally speaking, fir off, china you don't tell our speaker of the house where they can go when they want to go somewhere. that is number one. number two, i don't think the president should have to do that because we're a separate branch government. in this case there are unanswered questions that don't

>> hi, liz. elizabeth: okay this debate breaking out, the justice department, is it going to charge hunter biden? there is all the talk about doj policy, don't announce charges against politicians, two months, three months before an election. hunter biden is not a politician, joe biden is not on the ticket in the midterms. >> i tell you, liz, in my view having done this for a long time as a prosecutor, what the ag is doing right now stinks to high heaven. i think he is slow walking the case. they have let the grand jury expire. it is a tax case. it is based on records and a review of revenue that has come in to biden's accounts and he is either paid the tax or he has not. if he is not, he needs to be indicted. that along with lobbying appears he has been lobbying the government and his dad in particular, and he is not registered as a lobby. that also is a federal criminal violation.

elizabeth: so did we get a hint last week what may happen when the federal grand jury finished its work without indictments? >> well, again it goes back to whether or not the department of justice is acting promptly and responsibly. we saw, for example, in the past day or two senator grassley, who is the i think the ranking minority member on the judiciary committee, he sent a scathing letter to the fbi and to garland saying, what are you guys doing? there is political bias. you're not moving forward. he has got whistle-blowers apparently who are saying that the fbi has got an agenda and is acting irresponsibly generally toward the conservative party and of course we've heard that before in the past. elizabeth: guy, there is speculation about a plea agreement, that hunter could admit guilt to redues charges. we don't know on what. your point well-taken on
