"the evening edit" starts right now. jackie: good evening and welcome everybody. the dow ended up 330 points higher this following today's data from the bureau of economic analysis showing showing that gs domestic product, gdp, fell by .9% on an annual basis from april through june. so this of course marking the fact that the u.s. is now in a recession with our nation's economy contracting for the second straight quarter. edward lawrence is at the white house with the details, edward? reporter: call a duck a duck.
6:02 pm
the common definition of a recession is two quarters of negative growth but the president says with the unemployment rate near record low we can't be in a recession. president biden: there will be a lot of chatter today on wall street and among pundits about whether we are in a recession. if you look at our job market, consumer spending, business investment, we see signs of economic progress in the second quarter as well. reporter: the fact is the administration has only added back jobs to the economy on net up until this last jobs report. in the last jobs report the private sector finally reached the amount of jobs lost in the pandemic. only created 140,000 jobs above prepandemic levels. republicans say the pain americans feel that is what a recession looks like. >> the american people know when they get their pay stubs they're making less in real wages. and every day the american people understand the simple truth, we cannot afford democrats failed policies. we are certainly paying for them. reporter: the president still

6:04 pm
real wages, real wages amongst americans have dropped 1.5% since joe biden took oath of office. guess with? in his first 18 months, every month wages dropped. 105 points prior to him being in the white house, 10out of those 105 months real wages have gone up. inflation is up 13.8% because of joe biden's recless spending policies. we are in a recession. i hope that he will wake up. he also said that inflation was only transitory. jackie: yeah. >> it's not. clearly they need to wake up and see reality? jackie: janet yellen called it transitory, mitch. they were she apologized. did a mea culpa but said she was wrong. she is denying u.s. is currently in recession as well. this is the administration playbook if you will. the markets seen this quite sometime. obviously markets have dropped. investors skiddish about investing in the market. the bond market is forecasting it as well. second gdp report,

second quarter of negative you know, contraction if you will and that's confirming what we already knew, which is that things are really hard out there. gas prices are up. food prices are up. people are really struggling, mitch? >> inflation is insidious. really hurts the lowest wage earners the most and if you look at the gdp report today, it really wasn't very encouraging because inventories fell which dragged down gdp and exports which was perhaps one of the shining lights there, with the very, very strong dollar that we had, i think exports are going to suffer down the road. this slowdown of the economy is not transitional, it is not transitory. it may be with us for a while. it may not be a deep recession but i think it will be a sticky one and bad policy as maria bartiromo likes to say leads to bad outcomes. what did they do today? same day of a bad gdp print,

6:10 pm
jackie: right. >> that is why the unemployment rate is low because people are leaving the workforce. jackie: i love the stat for those still in the workforce, still looking for a job, they could have two jobs if they want them. that is what is going on right now. a lot to watch, a lot to follow. really appreciate both of you coming on tonight, giving us your insight. >> great to see you, jackie. jackie: new details in the hunter biden scandal. there is now word that the president met with at least 14 of hunter's business associates while he was vice president. and china's president gives biden a fiery warning on taiwan as a troubling new report revealed that china spent billions of dollars on u.s. real estate last year. fox business host larry kudlow, here to break it down for us next. >> you have these land purchases near military bases, buying up of our farmland that we need for domestic food security but we've also seen incidents where they're coming into our ports.

as the white house faces a laundry list of crisis, democrats are trying to distance themselves from president joe biden ahead of 2024. joining us for reaction, welcome fox news contributor and washington examiner correspondent byron york. i want to start with a sound bite because it's too good. there's a number of democrats wanting to distance themselves from the president. take a listen. >> do you support the president in his reelection bid? >> i'm working on my own election, and that's all i'm focused on right now: we can chat about that after i win and get into the united states senate. >> do you want to see joe biden run for a second term? >> i -- that's an easy question. not going to take long. >> i don't want to answer the question because that's not -- yeah, i don't want to answer that question. >> the president chooses to run again in 2024 we'll cross that bridge when we get to it, but i

poll, you know something is wrong. speaking of polls, new new hampshire poll has some of the candidates that people would want to see run for president in 2024. pete buttigieg toms the list with 17% and pete biden with 16%, gavin newsom 10%, amy klobuchar 9%. no way around there do i see kamala harris. >> no, that's interesting and we're close to 20 -- more than 20 democrats who ran for the democratic nomination in 2020. they all are still around and they all still want to be president. what's interesting about new hampshire polls as well as iowa and south carolina polls is that the, you know, when you look at national polls, the party's primary race does not start as a national race. it starts in iowa, new hampshire, and south carolina maybe the democrats will change some of that, but it starts in states, and you have to look at

that and clearly what it shows is there's a pretty robust opposition to biden in new hampshire, which would be a very, very damaging thing for him as a sitting president. >> yeah, it's interesting, byron, really when you look at the democrat's bench, look, joe biden is 79 years old and many people say, you know, just with some of his cognitive problems and some issues we see, even he looks tired. he looks like some of these trips are difficult for him, he shouldn't run again. but look at the bench and you wonder, they really don't have anybody that's like a knockout standout candidate. i mean, pete buttigieg is a joke. gavin newsom seems to be trying to raise money stepping up to the plate and kamala is saying i wasted the last year. i have to try and do something here. maybe get on the radar so she's really hitching her wagon to the abortion issue, but there's seems to be nobody there. >> well, they don't have somebody like ron desantis in

the republican race who seems to be favored by almost everybody who doesn't want donald trump to run in the republican race. you just don't have that in the democratic race, but you do have one thing, which is a sitting vice president of the united states. you say she doesn't appear on the polls. that's correct but she is the obvious successor to president biden who chose her to be vice president, and they were elected. i think it would be very, very hard for democrats if the president were to choose not to run, be hard for democrats to dump the sitting vice president of their own party. >> i hear what you're saying and i totally understand the logic behind it but having said that, people have said she had such a tremendous opportunity to step up to the plate, not only just as the first woman vice president and vice president of color as well and she really squandered her opportunity. some say joe biden put her in a bad spot and others say she wasn't up to the task. i have 10 seconds to answer,
