"the evening edit," it starts right now. ♪ elizabeth: thanks for joining us. we begin with stocks again to the downside after adp said jobs came in worse than expected. it was 132,000 jobs for august. that was half the forecast. look at this fed officials are now talking about interest rate hikes above 4% and economic growth slowing to well below 2% and goldman sachs is now warning u.s. house prices will slow dramatically in coming quarters. this is sparking fears of a recession. there is all that. now there is this, hillary vaughn is in washington with more on how businesses are dealing with a rise in crime coast to coast.

hillary? reporter: good evening, liz. well president biden says he knows a lot of americans do not feel safe anymore and he says the answer is more police. but that is a big disconnect from some mayors in the president's own party who are not ramping up hiring of police to get a handle on high crime. it is forcing businesses to limit hours, move locations or close shop entirely because they don't think it is safe to be open for business. according to the national retail federation, about 69% of retailers say they have seen an increase in organized retail crime but it is more than just theft. violent crime is up too in stores. business owners, workers, do not feel safe and neither do their customers. "new york times" reports fbi data shows assaults at convenience stores increased by 75% between 2018 and 2020. business owners say it is not just a lack of police. it is a lack of prosecution that is triggering a rise in repeat

economy, inflation, recession, crime and the border top their concerns. what do you say, congressman? >> i think that what you're seeing is absolutely correct. joe biden has to distract because his agenda has failed all americans, i don't care if you're a republican, an independent, a democrat, his agenda has failed you. he loves to talk about fighting for the soul of america? here is the real deal, republicans are fighting for the soul of america because we have a president who does not care about the plight that is facing the american people, he doesn't care about fentanyl killing people in our streets. he doesn't care about inflation which he caused and he simply does not care about the rule of law. his student loan bailout is illegal. i know we'll talk about it but it is illegal. so people need to understand, joe biden only cares about his political prospects, not the issues that are actually facing the american people. elizabeth: to what the congressman is saying, douglas, now that you think about it, did the student loan bailout, auto

loan, people who borrowed loans for their cars will they get a bailout when california bans gas cars? i'm being facetious about it. i'm pointing that out. let me point this out too, douglas. biden is polling in the low 40s, the high 30s, the more he focuses on trump the less conversation about the mess democrats put the economy in, right? i think that is what is going on. he was supposed to be the guy calming the waters and unifying the nation, douglas? >> here is the thing the policy agenda biden administration followed is series of big errors. two trillion dollar stimulus gives us inflation. fed needs to react to hold interest rates high. fears of recession. the second big blunder is the student loan forgiveness agenda. that is a mistake economically. it is indefensible legally. i think that's right. it is indefensible from a policy point of view. it doesn't help education. it doesn't help the budget but

the most important thing is it is a political blunder. has people talking about him inanything the inflation again. talking about the economy again. he wants to change the subject but keeps going back to things people really care about and this time he helped it. elizabeth: i hear exactly what you're saying, douglas, a good point. congressman the president made incendiary point that the president talked about the second amendment. >> for those brave right-wing americans say it is all about keeping america, keeping america's independent and safe, if you want to fight against a country you need an f-15, you need something a little more than a gun. no, i'm not joking, think about this, think about the rationale we use, that is used to provide this and who are they shooting at? shooting at these guys behind me. impose tougher penalties for deadly fentanyl trafficking that is poisoning communities across this country. elizabeth: he was pointing at cops, saying effectively second

amendment supporters are shooting at cops. that is not. that is january 6th talk. the crack, the crackdown on the border would stop fentanyl. life expectancies in the u.s. dropped because of overdoses, partly because of that? >> joe biden once again is flatly wrong. even his logic is wrong. what is he talking about? the second amendment is in the constitution for the citizens, not for the government. i see he likes talking about that while he has secret service protection. i wonder what the talking points would be if he lived on the south side of chicago, if he actually lived in new york, or los angeles and had to deal with the crime-ridden city? he would probably change his tune then. but to a broader point, you're right, if he cares about fentanyl now, which he doesn't, mechanic, why doesn't he end his crazy border policy which allowed for fentanyl trafficking to increase more than 1000% from the time, when donald trump was still president of the united

states? i mean i'm just sick of the man because he is doing everything wrong and he wants to blame republicans because election time is coming and the only thing he cares about is maintaining his power. elizabeth: it might be logical to try to get you know, douglas, to the congressman's point the other side on your side. you don't attack them. if you want to get their vote you try to unify. logic might say that. but you know this too, douglas, we need your reaction on this, biden's economic advisor brian deece, again claims we're not in recession. he says we're in a transition, but then he says a slowdown is part of that transition. people's head are spinning over that. watch this. >> as i said we are in a transition and we certainly anticipate that as part of that transition we will see some cooling in the rate of job growth across time. >> what you're seeing is we're in transition. >> we are transitioning clearly. >> certainly in a transition. we are seeing slowing as we all would have expected. elizabeth: douglas, are we

transitioning into a recession? i mean what -- so we're transitioning to what? a downturn, recession what do you think? >> look, chairman powell said very clearly last friday that america's businesses and households will feel pain and there will have to be high interest rates, restrictive rates for a considerable period of time. the result of that is most likely going to be recession. he used to talk about a soft landing. nobody is talking about that anymore. there is clear recession threat. it is out there at the end of this year, beginning of next year. it is a transition to that. here is the real question, followed by what? where is the pro-growth agenda in this administration? there isn't one. they don't believe in the private sector growing. they believe the government being the source of all goodies. we'll have higher taxes, more spending regulation, that will cause growth. you have and i know both know that won't work but that is the promise. elizabeth: we watch the polls, read the polls up and down, our team does, congressman what would you say to the other side of the aisle to join the nation?

they are tired of the, they don't want to break down into divisiveness. there is a fight for power to control the government. congressman, what would you say to the other side of the aisle to unite the country? >> well, the first thing is we are in a recession now. we've had two quarters of negative gdp growth. them trying to change the language doesn't change the facts and the reality. let's put that aside. i think if you're a democrat voter, listen, i want safe streets, i know you do too. i want kids to be educated, not indoctrinated i know you do too. the last thing i want a growing economy where everybody can thrive. you cannot grow an economy if you have democrat politicians voting to increase taxes on energy at a time when electricity prices are rising, at a time when yes, you will have to start heating your homes or cooling your homes depending where you live in the united states. it is time to get back to sound policies that work for everybody.

police. like living in a war zone right now, living with rising crime there. what is your take on crime hitting elections right now? >> well, you know, the hypocrites are coming home to roost. while i'm all for rehabilitation, recidivism is going through the roof. when you have activist judges, activist prosecutors, and activist politicians where it is about defunding the police any cop worth his salt knew this would happen when this thing first started. when the people that will be paying the most are the ones that are working hard and just trying to earn a living for their family. they're the victims of this political gamesmanship in my opinion. elizabeth: minority communities, right? minority communities are saying bring the cops back. it is, the blacks, hispanics, the poor people are getting hurt. that is always so heartbreaking, john, excuse me, bill. bill, you talked about this, bill, the other thing president, democrats are trying to rewrite history on democrats defund the

police push that started in 2020. now they see the polls. you will see this, bill, react to this. cnn's don lemon didn't want to defund police. then you will see democrats saying yeah, we do. we've got the receipts. watch this. >> joe biden said i never said defund the police. there were sensible democrats, democrats who didn't believe defund the police said this was never part of the democratic platform. >> we've been talking about defunding the police. >> there are some issues we asked police to do, mental health issues, policing in schools, perhaps all the rest perhaps we can shuffle some of that money around. >> not only disinvest for police but we need to completely dismantle the minneapolis police department. >> yes i support reallocation of resources of, from nypd. >> we will be moving funding from the nypd to youth initiatives and social service. >> i think you do all those other things. you don't need all the money going to the police department.

yeah, the spirit of it, i do support that. >> when we said defund the police the world woke up. >> we need to look at ways in which we can reduce the amount of resources that we're providing to the department, redirect those funds. elizabeth: you know, bill, let's show, you will see list of 14 cities that actually did defund police. so they can't flip-flop on that, right? >> my name is bill stanton but they're living my initials right now. it is ridiculous. all those voices i guarranty you are not from the inner city. they're from doorman buildings. armed guards when they go to work. i'm a minority. when i was a cop in the south bronx, overwhelming people are hard-working folks that wanted us to protect them. that is our creed, protect and serve. these folks want to disband that, the culture they're fostering, disrespect the cops, defund the cops, what are you

left with? anarchy. elizabeth: from seattle to new york city democrats running some of our nation's biggest cities. looks like they uniformly abandoned the rule of law for the rule of the mob. the media runs interference for it not covering it, right? they were pulling come out of schools too when you needed police to keep schools safe. >> and yes, then you will have a shooting they will say where are the police? you can't have it both ways. you know for those voices that say defund the police, and when you don't legally indemnify a cop, meaning that if he is doing everything right he could still be sued, where is the impetus, where is the motivation for the cop to get out of that car and do what he was sworn to do to protect and serve? elizabeth: bill, it happens at the same time the nation was put through pandemic lockdowns. that failed. and you know, it hurt, 22 million people were thrown out of work. tens of thousands of businesses were shut down forever. and then you know, you had, the

collapse of at the border, now you have 277 terrorists caught trying to cross the u.s. border in this past fiscal year-to-date, and i mean that is way more than last year, 154 last year. we didn't count got-aways. drug gangs are pouring in. cops are not just dealing with homegrown crime but what is coming from the border, bill, your final word? >> yes. these criminals, these drugs are being imported illegally and how many americans need to die before politicians and activists realize that for their passion americans are dying? there is illegal immigration. we should not let drugs, gang members, human trafficking in, not at all. elizabeth: bill stanton, thanks for the service to our country. come back soon. look at this. we're staying for this story for you. democrats are getting a more powerful irs to go after you with more audits.

elizabeth: welcome back to the show ranking member of house oversight. he is james comer. congressman, great to see you. what do you make of this? tim thibault former top fbi official in d.c. was in charge of multiple high-profile probes including the probe into hunter biden. he is saying retired. he is saying he is not politically biased. fbi whistle-blowers told senators grassley and ron johnson that he tried to block and bury the probe into hunter biden saying we'll not be involved any interfering in another election. bringing up james comey effectively and his press conference before, on hillary clinton's emails. what do you make of what he is saying now? >> well, just doesn't all add up but i will say this, he will have an opportunity to come before congress and explain his side of things. we've had whistle-blowers that have as you mentioned, liz, alleged the opposite and i can

tell you, as someone who is in possession of hunter biden's hard drive, that there are so many things on there that you just wonder why the fbi hasn't already done something before now to hunter biden. biden family -- elizabeth: you're saying gop on house oversight had possession of hunter biden's laptop? >> absolutely. >> findings explosive things, you're saying fbi should have acted already on that, can you talk about that? what are you finding? >> yeah. first of all you have to understand, liz, we talked about it on your show before, he had 150 suspicious activity reports filed against at least five different banks. the banks notifying the federal government we're pretty confident our client is committing some type of criminal activity. so i will say with confidence that there is not very much if any americans who have anywhere near 150 suspicious activity reports. he probably has anymore in the history of the united states.

elizabeth: are you hearing that -- >> why has didn't -- elizabeth: you're saying why hasn't the fbi acted on it, right, is that what you're saying? right. exactly they should have done something long ago. he is influence peddling with our adversaries. >> are fbi whistle-blowers saying the same thing, that is why they're contradicting thibault now? listen, we've had the hunter biden's laptop since 2019 and you didn't do anything with it. seems like that is what the frustration might be inside of the fbi. i mean we're hearing too that fbi sources, they're outraged, they're the gumshoe, the shoe leather guys who take the witness stand in criminal cases to catch the bad guys. they don't want to be anywhere near politicization of fbi if they have to go on the witness stand, you know what i mean? this guy is getting probes of violation of hatch act putting politically biased posts on social media. are they frustrated because hunter biden is doing bad things

and we should have acted and this guy thibault shut it down? >> that is exactly what they're saying. they are saying he blocked this from the very beginning. the straw that broke the camel's back when mar-a-lago was raided. the fbi is not a political organization. we try to stay out of politics but yet what they did, at mar-a-lago, didn't warrant an fbi raid but what hunter biden has done clearly warrants, at least some type of a major formal criminal investigation by the fbi, if not, prosecution, indictment -- elizabeth: what are the crimes? what are the crimes? >> you've got, you've got potentially money laundering. you've got all sorts of drug transactions there. you potentially got, you know, prostitution with, you know, potential victims human trafficked or under age. you have got a guy who sold influence to our adversaries.

whatever donald trump may have had in those boxes pale in comparison to some of the people that hunter biden was getting paid from. the russian oligarchs. the ukrainian energy companies. the russian energy companies. the chinese energy companies. this is a bad guy that has profited off of the biden family name for over a decade. yet the fbi has never done a thing about it. even gone further, that with facebook, you all don't need to print that story about that being laptop. that is russian disinformation. they had to know that that was hunter biden's laptop, if not, then they should resign because this is the fbi. they should know things like that. so the fbi has a lot of problems right now. they will have an opportunity in a republican majority to explain themselves. elizabeth: senator grassley also said tim thibault is friends with doj official bruce ohr and nellie ohr. he was accused helping push hillary's steele dossier financed by the hillary campaign and through the doj.

residents do not charge your electric cars now because the california state power grid faces rolling blackout amid a heat wave. congressman, this is a week ago california said it will ban gasoline cars in 2035. really? we're all get rid of our gas cars when they can't handle it? >> i mean it is ridiculous, liz. this is just another example of failed policy. and again, it is at the expense of policy because of the politics. californians need approximately 80% more capacity on their electric grid to accommodate just the electric cars and the baseload that enough now. i mean this is absurd. 2035 is when they want to phase out gas-powered vehicles. 1/3 of the electric charging vehicles in san francisco are broken. this is a broken policy. it's a bad idea. it is a bad idea. californians will be paying the price big time for it. it is a bad idea all around.

with things that are you know, magazines and stuff. that actually is an important element to this whole thing, i think. elizabeth: so what could the trump team say in response to the doj citing obstruction? the government records were deliberately concealed and moved when the fbi tried to retrieve them in june from the storage room? i think the reports are that three classified documents were in his office desk. the debate still is what were these documents, why did trump have them. what do you think was powerful response could be? >> well, first i mean when you consider it, they have been asking for these documents forever. there was a grand jury subpoena supplied to them. they came to the door, provided them with a read well envelope, taped up carefully and handed to them, said this is absolutely all the classified documentation we have after an exhaustive search? so they gave that to the agents. it is my understanding after that, really, by the way, reading the response from doj
