neil: one of the new employees handled my bag earlier this year, took two days to find me, i had to go out and buy clothes in the meantime. it is bringing up a lot of bad feelings on that. a self stocking robot in japan looking to take away the boring jobs being done by humans. what is this about? lauren: gordon can stock shelves, one thousand bottles a day with those robotic arms, kind of freaky. the maker is a japanese company, they say gordon will soon be able to do any mundane job human doesn't want to do and eventually do the jobs you do want to do. they are working on powering their robot to coexist with human beings, to provide social needs as well. it could be stuart i'm talking to a robot.

ashley: i think gordon will frighten customers, he looks like something out of a sci-fi horror movie. lauren: just prop me up and tell me beautiful things. is stuart listening? ashley: probably not. a company just opened fully autonomous restaurant in san francisco, the world's first restaurant of its kind with 60,000 possible customizations and variations on its menu. fantastic. the ceo and cofounder joins me now. congratulations. how long did it take you to come from an idea and you did this with a couple of your cohorts from stanford, how long did ago from this would be a good idea to reality? >> we started thinking through this in 2,020, almost two years ago when we realized we didn't

have any great affordable food options around campus. in the course of 2,020 one we built some prototypes and started our test and started designing and building what you see now what we just launched, the first fully autonomous location, a 2-year journey from start to here. ashley: how does it work? i am a customer, walk-up to the box behind you. is there a digital menu and i make my pics and the robots take over? >> exactly. let me give you a little tour. you see right here, ordering touchscreens on the side so you can place your order and keep track of the order status on your phone and when you are ready, pick up from the smart lockers on the end here so the glass turns clear when your order is ready and you grab anything else you need and you got a healthy meal for a low price. ashley: is the price cheaper
10:55 am
because you don't have a staff per se? >> it is cheaper for two reasons, one is these are a lot cheaper to build than a restaurant so there's less capital to be returned. the other is we have sound in our central kitchen where they can do their job more efficiently than on site where we bade -- need barely any labor at all so we pass that on to customers. ashley: what happens if something goes wrong and there are no humans around, is there somewhere the customer says i didn't order this or i don't like this, what is their option? >> right now we do have staff on hand to talk to customers and explain what is going on and we can adjust for any issues but long-term there is email and phone contact they can reach so we can step in. ashley: how much do these autonomous kitchens, restaurants, how much do they cost and are you looking to expand? >> we are planning to expand,
10:56 am
right now there are half-million to build per location but we expect to get that down substantially because these are reproducible. ashley: that is fascinating, thank you for taking time to speak with us and give us a tour and we wish you the best of luck. how fascinating. thank you. still ahead, florida lieutenant governor nunez, steve hilton, jonathan honing, the 11 a.m. am hour of "varney and company's" next. like any family, the auburns all have... individual priorities. some like strategic diversification.
