back in classroom were painted as political villains after a parent association in san diego successfully sued the state to reopen classrooms. that angered the union so they set it snooping into the ideological meaning of parents but the problem is all they were doing opposition research, somebody accidentally e-mailed a school principal who was on the parents side. the parents caught wind of the mistaken filed public records request to get the e-mail and opened the door to the unions skulduggery. the latest examples of teachers unions doing everything possible to ruin students lives. today on fox education secretary betsy devos said kids have been victims this whole pandemic. >> the pandemic laid bare the failings and compounding them today when they refuse to do the things that need to be done to serve children and families that have their children there.

this is not what's best for kids and how they learn, it's a system on right, headed by individuals bent on their own agenda adult issues not on kids or learning. kennedy: and not on kids who haven't been learning and continues to suffer. parents refused to be intimidated. my next guest, one of those well to bring this california school scandal to light. california parents and founder of reopen california schools. jonathan joining me now. how does this whole thing happen? >> thank you for having me tonight. you have to go back to what was going on in california, one of the longest school closures in the entire country, our state was 50th out of 50 at open schools. many cases we have local unions and school districts would not open so the case in san diego

where they were opening and parents came together who are frustrated the schools couldn't get the kids in the russians and decided to push back when they were successful, the cta thought there must be conspiracy going on, a right-wing dark money funding when it was really just up set parents, kids need an education. kennedy: as you pointed out, moms especially because they were the ones who had to leave the workforce for the longest periods of time and a lot of their careers suffered and then you have parents who before the pandemic was sending kids to public schools which were closed by the governor yet private schools were open so if you wanted your kid to learn in person you had to fork over tens of thousands of dollars a kid. it's easy for the governor to do that, is a multimillionaire but that forced parents in california all over to do the same thing so how will to many

did you prevail? california is a mock state, surprising there was a judicial force that was able to triumph over the liberal teachers union. >> i don't know how much you could say we prevail because we were last in the state we saw dismal numbers coming out but really it was parents who've not done this before, they focused on their kids and made huge sacrifices. some parents had to quit their jobs and others spent money on private schools like our governor did when he ordered public schools to close so some couldn't do either and watched the kids education deteriorate to the longer it went on parents got involved so as time went on i started in june of 2020 and parents at the time, we were at january 2021, parents all over the state popping up trying to get their kids in, it was

ridiculous so of course parents organized online and used their talents. kennedy: that's what parents have always done, where there's high parental involvement you see higher satisfaction and that's why they gravitate toward things like charter schools but they can be more involved but it has been unions pushing parents out of public schools for decades and it came to a fever pitch in the virginia governor's race. did you find parents you are talking to were apolitical, they weren't necessarily conservative and more concerned about their kids and who was in office? >> that described myself two years ago, i wasn't paying attention to politics or even the issues at the local school board, i was focused on my kids and individual issues at the school site. as soon as pandemic hit, that's

when i took interest in it took a long time to figure that out but ultimately a lot of it was the governor and state officials which their candidacy is funded primarily by large including the california teachers association and even when our state allowed some schools to open, california teachers association donated school board candidates so they were resisting reopen in parts of the state. thankfully where i am we were able to open earlier than others and san diego were still trying to reopen a year later. kennedy: that's unbelievable to me. are you running for school board? >> i am now, this has really got me involved and i'm running for school board where i am locally. plenty of parents so involved are now running for school board because they recognize how important local offices are to

good points kids for the ultimate victims of the pandemic here they are still being punished all across california all the way up to seattle and beyond, are you surprised erosion in public school trust has occurred to this degree? >> i wish i could say i was surprised that after the last few years and extend to which schools were closed despite mountains of evidence was safe to reopen, european countries did far sooner in the harm it had and we are still doing this in some places, it is mind-boggling but i wish i could say i was surprised people aren't happy with the education they get but i'm familiar with econ 101 and when you have a monopoly and something which in many parts of the country as a monopoly on education to public schools, the only option in places with no school choice,

they don't have to divide you with good services, a mention of grocery store and only one in your state or your area you could go, you will buy whatever they feel like giving you at whatever price if you like giving it to you, that's basically the status quo of our school system so we need to bring choice and competition and we want people to have education to satisfy them for the kids which is important. kennedy: you make great points because what would you rather have? a dollar store or a trader joe's, whole foods and kroger within reach to make all of those decisions? chris, like there are food deserts in this country, there are also educational deserts and in places like seattle where families want to get back to work, kids have to make up for their learning loss but teachers unions think they can continue the stranglehold, but they realize they've exhausted their goodwill? >> unions have a right to strike

and negotiate fair wages and parents unhappy with their schools, school board elections are every year end every part of the country and small election you cannot, if you are motivated by it. i read the poll, parents for the most part are satisfied with their schools, most people unsatisfied don't have kids in school right now to am not saying education in this country is perfect but we made the decision to provide education to every child in america and we should give them that, they should be in school full-time all the time, i get that and i get things could get better but this gloom and doom over public education, we have one of the finest systems in the world and it could be better and it will be better. kennedy: spike, i see you shaking your head, do you

disagree? >> we have something like the 25th or 30th best education system despite the fact that the united states spends a student, more taxpayer money and out-of-pocket money than almost any other country on earth, the federal department of education was created 50 years ago in that time, they spent nearly $3 trillion in every single metric used to measure educational outcomes, graduation rates, gpa, literacy rates, worldwide ranking, we've continued to slide as a direct result of what brad said, when government or anyone has a monopoly on anything in this case education, it gets worse and the answer is clear. we need to get government out of education entirely. government is rarely good at anything in this is not an example of them being good at something and it starts with ending the federal department of education put the money in the hands of parent and have robust statewide school choice programs that allow parents to decide whether students go. the teachers unions are set

the coming years. the governor is asking people not too charge them between four p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to pick up the kids from school to take them to practice and whatnot so how on earth in 2025 when everything is electric will a grid system that can't be refashioned in the time, how can it support vehicles when he can't charge them now? >> we have a tiny percentage of it now and by the way we got to add, you want to electrify every part of our lives. we are not going to be allowed to cook with gas and that's coming in, we are up and down the state getting rid of gas new homes, that's going to be electric as well. it is completely ludicrous, a fantasy. they fantasize about it somehow they will get there through wind and solar and literally impossible. no serious person believes it's possible, they are making the policy and no they won't be around when the catastrophe
