"the evening edit" starts right now. ♪. welcome to the show. let's start with your money. stocks ending mixed. the dow and s&p fall for a 6th straight day. the dow is diving deeper into bear territory. hawkish fed officials talking rates at 4.75 of a point that rates could stay higher for longer to stop inflation. we had new home sales, consumer confidence jumping more than expected. the 10-year treasury yield it hit a 10-year high at 3.96. hurricane ian gathering strength as it drives towards southwest florida. this is about managing expectations. we have new modeling coming in. possibly 10 to 15-foot storm surges, up to 20-inch rainfall. power outages up to a week. growing concern could land as potentially powerful category 4. october weather's katie burn live from orlando international

airport. good to see you. reporter: liz, lots to talk up with the new updates we're learning this hour. i can tell you orlando international airport is making to close the airport tomorrow at 10:30 in the morning. still busy right now. people are coming and going, have flights tonight and tomorrow morning. as long as they are before 10:30 you're okay. they will close the airport potentially set up air aid and assistance depending how bad the storm gets. this airport following in the footsteps of tampa international airport which closed an hour ago. southwest florida internation airport in fort myers will now close tonight too. meanwhile on the roads there is traffic building. you will see it as millions of people in the state prepare for what is to come. no rain in orlando yet but things will look different in about 24 hours from now. there are mandatory evacuation orders in more than a dozen counties in the state. people in tampa waiting for hours for free sandbags to try to protect their homes from

floodwater damage. florida governor ron desantis in the last hour is giving an update as the storm is tracking more south towards the border of charlotte and sarasota counties. >> when you look at storm surge of this nature that is a very life-threatening hazard talking about 10 feet, 12 feet of storm surge which you could see in certain parts of this when it makes landfall. we know this thing is going to be hitting the state directly, sometime tomorrow evening. you still have some time. but that time is rapidly running out. reporter: now orlando is becoming a bit after safe haven for those people who are evacuating because we're more inland here. i'm told hotels selling out. the one in the airport is already sold out. some people in the airport extending business trips here or their vacations. what is interesting is, those hurricane warnings are expanding more inland within the last hour. if you were in this airport with me all of our phones were going

off because we all got the hurricane warning in effect for orlando as well. elizabeth: interesting. katie byrne, thank you for your reporting stay safe. jason smith from house ways and means and former white house deputy chief of staff karl rove. we have to move on to this. congressman the hurricane is hitting right as the nation is in a recession and wall street warns the federal reserve is literally break the financial markets and u.s. economy with over the top rate hikes. what to you think? >> i tell you, americans are struggling, they're struggling to put food on their table, clothes on their backs, gas in their cars and you look at this administration, nancy pelosi, chuck schumer, for the longest time they were denying inflation. then they were dismissing it. and now they're trying to downplay it because they have an election six weeks from today. they see the writing on the wall. they're spending practices has caused the highest inflation in 40 years and now they're trying to downplay it. it's unacceptable but americans,

they see right through it. elizabeth: karl what do you think to the congressman's point? we have jeremy siegel of the wharton business school, karl he is wrong now. it should not outvolcker, paul volcker. wall street is unusually alarmed by rapid unusual moves in the bond market. what do you think. >> i'm with the congressman. go back to where this came from. inflation is the result of too much money chasing too few goods. what did this administration do? added nearly five trillion dollars of demand through additional spending starting with the american rescue plan and most recently ending with the student loan bailout and so we got five trillion dollars more in demand and today they had a white house meeting. some of the senior officials in the government to discuss this, he said we'll have plans to save families money and lower costs. what did they say? we'll have airlines required to disclose the extra fees in advance so when you book a

ticket you know how much you're charged for your baggage. really, that will offset a lot i bet of the five trillion dollars in additional demand. strikes me we have both the fed and the administration off on the wrong track here. the one that we can do something about most immediately is, to stop the spending that this administration has engaged in. elizabeth: we've got a global supply shortage. to karl's point we have global shortage. this is incredibly inflationary to karl's point should down that supply too. paying people not to work during the pandemic, labor shortages but to karl's point, congressman, president held a white house event how to save money for inflation after he held a mission accomplished party two weeks ago celebrating the inflation reduction act, wharton, cbo, moody's said will not have any impact. watch the president yesterday.

president biden: inflation, inflation is the end of the month you have less money in your from your paycheck or more money in your paycheck. elizabeth: congressman, why is he doing an explainer on inflation? real wages have gone down the fastest in 40 years under biden? >> this administration is out of touch with reality. real wages are down 4.3% since joe biden has taken the oath of office. inflation has gone up 13.7% since joe biden's taken the oath of office. and why, why has real wages gone down, why has inflation gone up? because they have spent more than $10 trillion since he has taken the oath of office. this is unacceptable this is why every american is paying more to put food on their table, clothe on their backs, gasoline in their cars. they have a meeting to say we want more transparency on fees when you go to the airport? elizabeth: that's it? >> the people in southeast

missouri rarely fly one time a year. they buy grossry, put fuel in their gas tanks. that is what they are concerned about. elizabeth: flight fees. january 6th is expected to postpone tomorrow's hearing. they were supposed to do it ahead of the final report. they have nickel and dime moves to talk about inflation. >> it is almost laughable. to the congressman's point, shows how out of touch they are. they have pumped all this additional demand in. five billion dollars in new spending on top of what was already built into the federal budget. and then they come out and say they will have the airlines disclose the additional fees they charge you when you book? we're also going to require expedia, everybody else that books to do the same thing? would somebody please explain to me how that is going to bring about a significant reduction in inflation, even for airplane tickets? more transparency, more cost on airlines because they will have to have all kinds of compliance with some new federal mandate

how they report those numbers. elizabeth: go ahead, karl. >> you made a really good point about supply. think about all they have done to crimp energy supplies deliberately. they wanted us to be less dependent upon oil and gas, on hydrocarbons. they did things to make it more difficult to drill, therefore diminish the potential supply and it, now they're doing what? nothing. nothing of substance. elizabeth: so you know to karl's point house speaker pelosi is now calling the gop's quote, commitment to america agenda, extremist. that is what she is saying. let's watch this. >> speaker pelosi is going to be fired in 46 days. elizabeth: that was a quick sound bite. representative scalise says the same thing, congressman. what do you think all the democrats got calling gop agenda extremist? >> democrat party, nancy pelosi, joe biden, chuck schumer thinks anyone who disagrees with them is extreme. let me tell you america is not a

hundreds of teenagers came from a nearby roller skating ring caused $10,000 in damages. jeff flock in philadelphia with more. reporter: that is the wawa store behind me on saturday where all hell broke loose. look at pictures from inside. about 8:30 of a kids left a roller ring next door, came to the wawa and just started throwing things, jumping up on top of stuff, wrecking things. it was a mess. about $10,000 in damage. and police now releasing some of the tape you're now looking at in an attempt to identify some of the kids. i say, yes, kids. most of them were juvenile but police say that is no excuse. >> we cannot have this type of behavior happening in this city. again, the business community doesn't deserve that, the citizens of this city don't deserve it. reporter: liz rising crime rates aproblem across the nation but particularly acute here in

philadelphia. look at numbers, violent crime up 6%. retail theft up more than 50%. burglaries up 30%. armed robbery with a gun up almost 60%. the good news no one was harmed in the trashing of the convenience store. police still looking to make an arrest. liz? elizabeth: jeff flock, thank you for your reporting, good to see you, joining us now senator marsha blackburn. senator you heard the report about the wawa ransacking. spark as crime wave hitting businesses nationwide. your home state has been victimized including shootings. can you talk to us about this? >> yes indeed. the american people know there is rising crime across this country and it is coming because you have d.a.s and prosecutors, you have judges, that are weak on crime and these violent offenders carry out these crimes, cash, no-cash

illinois democrat kimberly lifert carjacked by gunpoint. california democrat, karen bass that home was robbed. former california democrat barbara boxer, mugged and assaulted broad daylight last summer. what is gavin newsom talking about, you know the narrative. these are women, women. where is the "me too" movement? where are female democrats standing up saying women are getting victimized. where are they? where is the "me too" movement? >> they don't want to point out democrats made very bad decisions when it comes to dealing with crime. so they are just letting the issue go. they're not talking about it, how dare they contradict the white house. but what women know is that this crime is in their communities, much of it tied to that open southern border with drugs an fentanyl and gangs and the cartel coming across that border. they know this. and that is why women, are the number one purchaser of

♪. elizabeth: we do have tensions between taiwan and china in. they are heating up. companies going along with u.s. demand backing out of businesses with china if china attacks taiwan. edward lawrence in washington with this hot story. reporter: apple plans to keep the bulk of its manufacturing in china however executives realized it might be good to diversify the supply chain. so some of the new iphone 14s will now be made in india. so it's a win-win for apple which has 4% of the phone market in india. apple hopes to also increase that. google making the same move with production of its phone, moving out of china but not to the u.s. even though we have been hearing this from the administration. >> these are things that the president has done for the past 19 months, making sure that

we've got a problem with china. when you look at the technology that is produced in china, that which have to have, the semiconductors, we need an administration that will stand up to china and everything that this administration does with respect to china is all talk. you know the research that we've done with our investigations on oversight committee shows joe biden knew exactly what hunter biden was doing in trying to negotiate deals with china to start purchasing interest in the american energy industry. so, we've got a long way to go with respect to lessening our dependence on china, much less bringing manufacturing back to the united states. hopefully in a republican majority we can force this administration to not just talk about being tough with china, but actually doing something to be tough with china. elizabeth: something about the actual presentations that you have, the biden family giving access to u.s. energy and u.s. natural gas reserves in five states. is it more than that? are you finding more information

that the biden family was doing with u.s. energy assets? >> yeah. we've got a lot of whistle-blowers that have come forward. we're continuing to conduct investigations. i'm not going to sign my name on anything unless it is factual. unlike adam schiff we'll produce factual evidence of wrongdoing. the american people know hunter biden was shady character doing business deals at the expense of america. americans will see joe biden knew very well what hunter biden was doing. now the question is was joe biden using government officials to try to help facilitate these deals that hunter was trying to do with china. at the end much the day -- elizabeth: where they made millions of dollars, right? >> why we need bank records this administration blocked access to bank records that other members of congress had previous access to. once we get access those -- elizabeth: treasury claim

because of an ongoing probe. is that true. >> that is what they're saying but that is not true. the ongoing probe is tax evasion, that is what is he being investigated for in delaware is tax evasion. what we're talking about dealing with china. that has potentially compromised this president. that is why we're seeing an administration soft on china, having an energy policy that is advantageous to china at the expense of american consumers. so we've got a long way to go for this administration to stand up to china. elizabeth: we have this, 51 republican lawmakers sent a letter to three cabinet secretaries, pentagon, treasury secretary, agricultural chief. that they are being threatening by the chinese company buying land near grand forks air force base in north dakota. you talked about getting to hunter biden as part of the house oversight probe. you are basically pushing allegations that basically hunter biden's former assistant

was a spy for the chinese government. that hunter biden has his own eric swalwell fang fang problem. this is based on anonymous whistle-blowers, right? so the american people will say who are these whistle-blowers? >> it is based on credible whistle-blower. i think the american people will see that whistle-blower testify under oath in a republican majority if we flip the house in november. but at the end of the day this was his assistant and she was a member of the communist chinese party. so this is all information that's coming out. the more that comes out on hunter biden the worse it is. the more it shows that hunter was compromised by china. now was this president compromised? elizabeth: do you know if she was a spy? >> we don't know she was a spy but we do know she was very active in the chinese communist party. we do know that everyone affiliated with that chinese, the founder of the chinese energy company he was working for has been detained by the chinese government.

for families with the holidays. we just experienced soaring electricity bills with summer heat waves. we're already seeing warning signs. a new bank of america poll shows 17% of respondents say they missed a utility bill payment due to financial difficult. if you look at households making un50,000, that jumps to 25%. energy experts warn this will only get worse with war in ukraine putting millions of families in a difficult position to pay for food or rent in many cases. utility companies are sharing tips how to conserve energy. have an inspector clean your heating system, use led bulbs what about people who can't do that, they are living paycheck to paycheck? they're not looking tore phipps. they're looking for lower prices. >> kelly, thank you. fox news contributor liz peek. your reaction to that report? >> i'm not surprised, liz, natural gases are up over 60%

where they were last year. that has to filter into the price of heating your home. because we're not producing anymore natural gas, indeed because president biden to committed exporting a lot of natural gas to europe to, because of the war in ukraine, we are really looking at a very tight natural gas market and i think, actually the increases you talked about are probably conservative. elizabeth: wow, conservative. so, liz, but the president has been talking about climate change and gas prices. let's get your reaction to this, watch. president biden: i pledged $11 billion a year to help poor countries fight climate change. working with congress with your help we can get this done. -- states below three you can bucks. low 3s in most places. in 41 states plus the district of columbia the average gasoline price is less than $2.99. companies running gas stations setting those prices at the pump

bring down prices you're charging at the pump, do it now. do it now. >> okay, liz, again and again, no state, no state, there is no state where your gas is below $3. also why spend money on climate changeover seas when we have thousands of homeless veterans here? we have low income people here dealing with high energy prices? >> yeah, that is sort of a double-whammy, isn't it? already americans are not totally happy we're spending money on climate change. it is one of the less important issues to most americans and to do so outside of our own country just seems sort of, really tone deaf to the needs of americans these days. by the way, yeah, the average price of natural gas, i mean of gasoline is 3.80 at the pump, 3.83 it is, up 17% year-over-year. the only reason gasoline prices have come down is we are still releasing a million barrels a day from the strategic petroleum reserve. now our reserves are the lowest

they have been since 1984, liz, which is really not a great situation. elizabeth: that feels like -- >> we're also in a recession. a recession. so demand is down. elizabeth: brit, feels like a political ponzi scheme with what is going on with the strategic reserve. we have to pay for that. brit hume says the president claiming gas is just 2.99, that price again nowhere to be found, do you think it adds to the perception the president is not up to the job, that this is what is dragging down his approval ratings, this is what is dragging his party down and it's a bad way to govern, it is just bad politics? >> you know, it is not polite to call your president a liar but he lies all the time and, guess what, it shows up in polling. interestingly when he was first elected people thought he was honest. that is no longer the case. i mean there have been so many whoppers issued by this president and particularly on things we all know are false, like the price of gasoline.

elizabeth: back with us from house oversight, congressman michael cloud. good to see you, congressman. >> good to be here. elizabeth: great to see you in the studio. great to have you on. what do you think about the bill moving in the house to ban stock trading for members of congress and supreme court justice and families? >> this is couple bills, quite some time along with some democratic counterparts to deal with congress when it comes to banning stock trading, making sure anything we go into a qualified blind trust but one of the things that is overlooked in

this bill, i think is extremely important, i introduced a bill on it just a couple weeks ago called the divest act, the executive branch continues to get overlooked on this. they are the ones making specific decisions when it comes to everything we saw during covid, medicine, weapons systems those sorts of things. congress will pass a bill has a lot of detail left out. then it goes over to the executive branch where they're filling in these details. the people making those decisions need to be held accountable as well. elizabeth: so they can sandbag the bill maybe i don't know. >> yeah. elizabeth: that happened too. speaker pelosi oddly silent about this after the uproar over her husband's lucrative stock trades while she has been in office. >> like i said, we cosponsored these bills couple years ago. suddenly we're hearing news bit in the election cycle. some people in the bubble in their district want to make issue, to show separation between pelosi and them, who knows. it is very interesting to see this suddenly getting light, a little movement. so far it is just lip service.

we don't see the bill. don't have legislative text on their proposal. elizabeth: yeah. >> there are a couple of bills out there i and others have cosponsored that would rein in trading for members of congress but we've really got to do everything we can to restore the american peoples trust in government at large. >> you know what else is going on? the hill, "the hill," media report out of washington they say now, they have got new reports show trillions of dollars, not hundreds of billions, trillions in government waste and spending especially the covid relief spending and it is coming out also waste out of the education department and more. so, you know the president has that student loan bailout. cbo says $400 billion. we have a lawsuit from the libertarian pacific legal foundation saying it is unconstitutional. he basically did that with a press release you know what i mean? when you see congress doing stock trading, massive spending going on, talking trillions in waste, voters are saying what the heck is going on?

>> you know, exactly. i'm on the oversight committee. virtually every term we have one hearing where the government accountability office comes in, present a report hon waste, fraud and abuse. just to make that list, agency or program has to be in jeopardy wasting a billion dollars. there is waste, fraud abuse throughout the whole thing. one more reason we have to give oversight to the executive branch. we have to bring the agencies in, not only have they been politicized weaponized but they are inefficient doing their job itself. elizabeth: you can't become desensitized to it, right? >> you shouldn't. elizabeth: talking about 87,000, tens of thousands of irs agents to go after people, exactly after you're doing that. >> exactly. we have the agencies trying to hold the american people to a standard they're not willing to meet. elizabeth: right. >> we have to remember the government is here to work for the people, not the other way around. elizabeth: got it. congressman cloud, good to have you in the studio. hope you have a good time in new york. good to see you. this story, the justice

elizabeth: back with us now, arizona attorney general mark brnovich. sir, it's good to have you back on. when you heard that attorney general merrick garland and the dea announced the government had seized 10 million fake fentanyl pills across 50 states since the summer, that's enough to kill every american multiple times over. what was your reaction to that report? >> my immediate reaction, liz, but just in the past month there's been more than a million pills seized just here in arizona. we know that there was 44 pound in the month of august at the nogales border crossing station. i would say to merrick garland and doj, welcome and thank you for finally recognizing that we have a fentanyl problem in this country. but americans have been dying for years now, and you've done nothing, and you allowed the cartels to basically seize control of the border. and as a result of that, that's

why we are seeing a record amount of fentanyl throughout the united states, because every state is a border state. elizabeth: and to your point, sir, for the first time, for the first time most illegal immigrants, the majority crossing into the u.s., are now from remote countries, not from countries contiguous to the southern border. from remote countries. and we have a letter to dhs secretary mayorkas if from 14 house republicans. they're saying venezuela is purposefully releasing violent criminals and sending them to the u.s. border. is that true? >> yes. i mean, in what we've seen, once again, just in the month of august, more than 55,000 individual encounters with people from nicaragua, cuba and seps wail la. so, indeed, we are seeing these despotic regimes, i think, systematically emptying out or allowing criminals to basically leave their countries and come here9 to the united states. we get these countries that are despotic regimes like venezuela,

it's harder to actually remove them and send hem back because it is a totalitarian regime, and there are human rights violations going on there. it's not just all economics -- elizabeth: so you're with saying venezuela, the communist regime won't take them back. is that what you're saying? >> that's part of it. it's difficult to deal with these regimes in the first place. but the other thing is when we talk about legitimate threats of persecution, there are probably people from venezuela that are pacing much more serious crimes than, let's say, someone from jamaica, haiti or even mexico. so it makes it much more difficult. so when the biden administration decriminalized and incentivized people to come here illegally, he is now creating incentives for the dictators in cuba and venezuela -- elizabeth: you know, and the thing is economic asylum, economic asylum is not a standard in the law, and it's unfair to the women and children who are persecuted -- >> correct. elizabeth: -- for true reasons.
