jackie: good evening everybody, we have stocks down last day of october. wall street remains cautious ahead of the policy decision wednesday from the federal reserve. pocketbook issues top of minds heading into midterm elections. half of americans say economy and i nation is the most important issue with the vote for congress, according to a new abc news ipsos poll. hillary vaughn with the latest for us. reporter: good evening, jackie, a week until election day and biggest issue on voters minds is their violence. a new abc poll found half of americans say economy and inflation are the single most important issues weighing their vote next tuesday. republicans think that brings midterm momentum for the gop. >> it is death by a thousand

republicans. for reaction, republican congressman byron donalds, and former whit house council of economic advisors acting chairman, tomas philipson. i will start with you, congressman. i will put up a graphic shows where we were when president trump was in office. where we are now as a result of president biden's policies. he essentially says this is not a referendum on him but two-ways looking at the world. two major policy decisions. i look at numbers here, if you look at the blue column things are substantially worse. now republicans are accused by the democrats not having a plan. i think the plan was laid out in the previous administration. all we have to do is go back to some of these policies and maybe we could fix things, congressman. >> oh, that is absolutely correct. first of all the democrats are delusional so is joe biden that is why the country is at a place we are now. number one, the federal reserve

has to be more aggressive about containing inflation, but number two washington has to stop the reckless overspending. a bunch of money been appropriated, not spent all that has to go back to the treasury. if you continue to throw money into the economy from the federal level, it is only going to cause the price of goods to continue to rise. last part, we have to get energy independent again. we have to take our foot off of the boot of the oil companies, of the gas companies. that has been brought to us by joe biden and the democrats. republicans have the answer for what is ailing america. jackie: great points, very interesting to see karine jean-pierre, press secretary of white house, make the rounds, spew out democrat talking points. we'll talk to you on the other side. >> when the president walked into the administration the economy was in absolute ruins. unemployment was 6.4%.

because of president's policies unemployment is 3.5%. historic low, we haven't seen that in 50 years. 10 million jobs have been created and i moved even further by making sure we lower those gas prices right, because of russian, russia, the war that putin has started we saw gas prices go up. now it is down by a buck 25 per gallon since the peak of june. that is because this president took historic actions to make sure that gas prices were coming down. we still have more work to do. that is why inflation reduction is so important. jackie: tomas, that is the spin. i a lot of places i would go there. gas prices up 40% before the boots were on the ground near ukraine. >> that is kind of ridiculous what they're arguing. i don't think anyone believes what they're saying, not even democrats. it was basically a v-shaped recovery after covid and inflation was below the fed policy rate of 2%.

in addition they inherited a vaccine or medical intervention was put on a silver plate which was very important to open up the economy but they basically pursued the opposite policies of the trump administration and therefore proportionally have had the exact opposite results in terms of real incomes going down for families meaning their paychecks are not reaching as far as they used to. that is really what matters. all this stuff about recession is irrelevant. what really matters is real incomes. how much can you buy for your paycheck? that has been a disaster in the last year-and-a-half. jackie: congressman, i want to come back to you and switch away a little bit from the economy but it still sort of flows through everything we're talking about here, right? it is the first issue for most voters. at least what the "abc/ipsos poll" said. that poll said abortion is top of mind for 16% of people. you hear the democrats really hitting the abortion issue hard to try to sway people over to

their side or keep voters on their side. that might be flipping over as a result of what we've seen over the course of the last year-and-a-half. your thoughts on how abortion is going to play in this larger narrative? >> i simply don't think it will play that much at all, not when the cost of food, the cost of electricity, the cost of gas, the cost of every product americans have to use go through the roof. families are choosing whether to pay the light bill or put food on the table. i think abortion will simply not matter. the second point, the democrats are lying to you, america. they are trying to fear-monger and lie. what the dobbs decision put it in the hands of state. it is not a federal issue anymore, it's a state issue. they're lying and fear-mongering. what is not fire mongering the state of this economy is a disaster that is the fault of democrats in the senate, democrats in the house and joe biden himself. jackie: let me ask you this, tomas. we're waiting for the fed. two more meeting this year,

november, december, blackrock, expect to see the fed funds rate at 4.75. that the feds that to continue to put its foot on the gas to try to undo inflation that has become embedded in the economy. the concern is that the pain for americans is going to continue because as the fed raises rates it takes a while to do some of that unwinding. and you know, people are suffering when they go to the grocery store, when they go to the gas pump. they're having a hard time. >> yay. the concern is that the hawkish fed policies is going to basically kick in during the recession. so everyone expects the fed to come up, four 1/2, 5% roughly next year in their top rate but also everyone expects a recession to be there but the, given these lags, so what we're currently seeing in the housing market for example, the housing market is tanking completely. prices are going down. quantity of houses sold is going

♪ >> the u.s. diesel shortage worsens across the country. supplies are low, demand remains high, threatening to fuel already surging inflation. madison alworth at a gas station in budd lake, new jersey, with the latest. reporter: jackie with severe diesel shortages experts warn us more fuel charges as well as more stress on a already battered supply chain. that is because the diesel shortage across the country, and particularly on the east coast is reaches crisis mode. the u.s. is down to a 25-day supply for diesel. that is compared to the normal 35 to 40-day supply. mansfield, one of the largest diesel wholesalers initiated code red for the southeast. that initiates emergency protocols and requires a 72-hour notice for deliveries to insure

they have the fuel. the company tells us it did not have to come to this. >> when you beat the industry up they will close facilities that are not profitable. ultimately we're reaping some of that right now. reporter: over the last two years these refineries were all closed down. now with the ukraine war the east coast needs to export diesel at a time when domestic demand cannot be met. diesel is up to $5.30. depending where you are in the country it could be 30 to 80 cents more than that. take the station behind me as an example. diesel here will cost you 5.9 $5. jackie, it is simple, supply and demand. the supply is the lowest levels since 2008. jackie: it sure is supply and demand, madison alworth, thank you so much. man field saying virginia, georgia, south carolina, tennessee, north carolina expected to experience historic

into the economy but what the administration, and nobody is doing, is addressing the supply side props that we have. the reason that we are short on diesel fuel, i read where it is the lowest amount we've had since the 1950s, is because of and all out attack from domestic energy from joe biden and the democrats. this is what we should expect with these policies. fortunately republicans have ideas how to fix this. i hope the american people give us the majority next week so that we can put our policies into place and give this administration the choice to make. do you want to do what's right for america, do you want too develop our domestic resources or do you want to continue to push bad policies like punishing saudi arabia on the military side for something that is an economic issue? jackie: right. >> this is the wrong way to go. jackie: we wouldn't have to retaliate if we had enough production here at home we wouldn't have a problem. congressman, you understand, i understand as well, that nobody will solve the inflation problem

until we get the energy situation straightened out because diesel is used to transport everything. so as long as the price of diesel fuel stays high, producers of products are not going to be able to reduce their prices and they're going to pass those extra costs on to you, me, and the average consumer out there. >> absolutely. diesel is very important in transportation. it is important in agriculture and construction. if we see the diesel prices go up, shortages with diesel, it affects the whole economy. it is more than just diesel fuel. it is natural gas. it is all the fuels we use to make electricity. it is an all-out attack on domestic it energy production. we're seeing increases to heat our homes, to drive our cars. where it is really hurting the most i'm afraid is at the supermarket because these energy prices get, they permeate all through the food supply chain with natural gas being key ingredients and nitrogen

fertilizer which is the basic input to agriculture. jackie: yeah. >> so these attacks on domestic energy have hurt people on low income or fixed income the most with increased food prices. >> real quick, last week top bank ceos went to saudi arabia to speak at a forum there talking about energy issues. and one of the points that they made you know, essentially this administration has to figure out some sort of common ground and they voiced that rather openly, i was surprised but in the "new york post" charlie gasparino writeses how ceos are trying to fix biden's saudi oil mess because he won't. it is so interesting to me. everybody seems to get it but the president. i have to stand back and think, maybe he does get it, he just doesn't care? >> it makes you wonder. it is not hard to see where the problems are and a shame that our ceos have to go to saudi arabia? why can't we produce energy here? we're blessed with domestic

consult poll. it indicates that when you look at who is enthusiastic about voting, when it comes to black voters 25%. white voters 37%. hispanic voters 35%. it is clear to me obama can vote now than our own president can? >> there is no question. i mean we all know what joe biden is going as for halloween tonight, the invisible man. he cannot be found. there is a reason for that. his numbers are horrible in the 30s for targeted states. regardless of what demographic you are in the issues are all the same. it is the economy. it is gas prices. it is crime. it is education it is securing the southern border. the democrats are wrong on all of these issues. the only thing they can do is try to bring out the one democrat left in their party who maybe sort of popular, and that is barack obama. but when you talk about young

policy. the american people are seeing it right now. none of it is working. jackie: one school of thought out there, that the president isn't actually calling the shots, mark? that is more extreme members of the party that you just mentioned, that did not get the nomination, maybe setting some of these extreme policies that play out hurting americans. the president said this is not a referendum about him, that it is, paraphrasing here, but it is about two very polar opposite types of policies but to me is the policy for the left. he represents it. so absolutely this is referendum on him and what he has done in his tenure. we have a sound bite from lindsey graham. here is how he thinks the midterms can go. >> i think we can be at 52 or 53 in the senate? >> really. >> i think we take the house. first bill, secure the border, go after fentanyl. the second bill people should vote on finding oil and gas we own so we're energy independent

the safety act was a way that they tried to obfuscate and the product of that is to defund the police. the way that the cash bail system works, now that they're trying to eliminate it will have a significant financial impact on law enforcement in a variety of different ways. increased prosecutors. increased public defenders. we have law enforcement having new obligations. it is all an effort to destroy the criminal justice system. jackie: right. >> it is indirectly going to defund the police. no doubt about it. jackie: they do it in the vain fighting for criminal justice reform. thomas is there any way to try to reform the system, help those who are disenfranchised without putting violent criminals back on the street immediately? i imagine there must be? >> yeah. there is a lot of ways to do that. what is interesting about the safety act, when they talk about how it is not equitable. the reality is, to the extent someone otherwise retained in jail and unable to post bond, now a judge, if they choose to, can just detain them without

whether shonda rhimes not promoting a woke netflix show or sara bareillis promoting music no one wanted to listen. twitter will be a better platform when those folks are gone and president trump and countless con serve tiff influencers are brought back to the platform. he needs to stick to his guns here. jackie: i can't imagine elon musk wouldn't think some of this would happen when he took leadership and took the reins and also started talking about changing some of the rules. but he is also a very, very, god and successful businessman with a great track record. i imagine he considered some of these issues and he just doesn't care. >> no, i think that 75% of staff being laid off number didn't come out of thin air. something that is absolutely necessary in order to execute his vision and frankly person nel is policy. the same issue president trump faced in early days 6 his administration. if he wants to accomplish what he set out to, purchased this company it will require him to blow up the entire staff.

i don't think he should stop at 75%. i hope he gets every single one of these people that made twitter a giant failure. jackie: you're right. part of his plan to bring in fresh blood, blood loyal to him, employees who have not been carrying out the policies and practices even if they're not in the fine print of the top twitter executives, you know, suppressing speech, the bottom problems, all of these things. everybody was working together at that company. they have all some accountability i would imagine? >> we're seeing employees still employed at twitter are going rogue. countless other conservatives were banned over the weekend from the platform. frankly it will continue to happen until elon gets rid of these people. so i think he is really got to power through these first couple days to get to the firings. jackie: it is interesting too. he wants it to be a public square. he does want people to you know, have the right to free speech. he wants them to voice their

opinions but the question is, always has been, when it comes to twitter, where do you draw that line? when does a user go too far? when does the company take action? cuts it have to be reported that there is a violation, or does the company just decide? are they able to look at or monitor all of these accounts? it will be interesting to see how he reshapes, redefines what is happening there. >> elon has said in the last few interviews he has done regarding the direction he will take with the platform he intends to the follow speech laws of the united states. calls to violence and other things of that nature will not be allowed on the platform but they're not going to be in the business deciding what americans can say on the internet. we're a week away from the election and thousands of americans were taken off the platform. he will put an end to that. it is long overdue. it is time to restore order and speech to the platform. jackie: take them off the platform. conservatives losing followers, a lot to watch for you know, many people are excited to see what elon musk will do.
