republicans inching towards the house majority and adjusting towards the latest tallies. jackie deangeles in for elizabeth macdonald. "the evening edit" starts right now. jackie: good evening and welcome, everybody. take a look at money and stocks surging today on wall street following a better than expected inflation report. was that the only thing moving the market? probably likely not. the consumer price index rising 7.7% in october from a year earlier as americans are struggling to make ends meet at home.
6:02 pm
jerry willis in new york about the details of the report. jerry. >> jackie, wall street having a party today over lower than expected inflation numbers and main street isn't celebrating. october's consumer price index showing inflation at 7.7% year over year. that's down from september's 8.2% and below wall street expectations. food categori categories contine higher. take for example eggs, up 43% year over year and hope you weren't staying awake with a cup of joe and coffee up 14%. energy lifting off and a bleak winter for north easterners and gas higher by 17.5%. all of this might be easier to take if wages were moving at the same pace as inflation in the economy and average earnings up 4.7% for the month, americans are still struggling to make

ends meet. jackie. jackie: they sure are. for a lot of things, let's bring in senator marsha blackburn from the state senate science and trillions committee. thank you for joining us tonight, senator. talk alaska the inflation number because 7.7% year over year while under expectations and dropping a bit still very high and gerri indicates there and consumers can see the high prices at the grocery store and at the pump as well. my theory today is that possibly wall street was people are

watching and cautiously optimistic that you're going to see the house and senate in republican control. we're still waiting on those results in nevada and arizona and you've got the december 6 runoff. we'll be working hard to make sure that team herschel gets across the finish line and the american people want to get it across the line and of course inflation is at the top of the list. jackie, you've got upwards of 70% of the american people says america is on the wrong track. when you look at inflation and go to the grocery store, and look at eggs and milk and bags of candy you're using for kids

for the holidays. you look at ice cream, a half gallon of ice cream and you see the price increases. i cannot believe it. every week when i do the grocery shopping, how much more it's costing, 7.7%. when i go to the grocery store, people will say what's this about 8% inflation, 7% inflation. look at these prices. as you said, it's hurting. jackie: consumers say they see know sign that prices are coming down and the consumer price report and look at what the fed has to do here. fixed rate hikes so far this year. question mark for december at this point. but many people saying oh, well wall street said today the fed

can take i its foot off the gas. to get from 7.7% to 2% where the target s i don't see them taking a break here at least not now. >> i think too much of these individuals that are making these statements are not in cities and towns across the country. they're not having to fill up the tank they're not trying to fill up the grocery cart and don't realize what an enormous problem this is. when it is causing some -- my tennesseans to spend $100 to fill up the pickup truck they drive 30 miles each direction to and from work and running to take kids to activities on the weekend. they are going through a lot of fuel. and, you know, electric cars are too expensive. that's not an option for them and it is insulting to hard working taxpayers to be told to
6:07 pm
go eat chef boyardee or to change their plans. no, this is the united states of america. we have to get this situation under control. it's not because of global tensions. it is because of decisions that this administration has made choosing to call a war on oil and gas and create out of control spending that seems to not stop. this is all part of that picture that we have such a very high inflation rate. jackie: this notion of $4 trillion of spending over that amount even within the last 18, 19 months and that's why i think the market was cheering today because it sees a
6:08 pm
republican house. at least being able to put the breaks on that and i think that's what wall street was cheering. let me switch gears for a moment because yesterday at the white house, biden did give some remarks and he talked about the elections and what his strategy was going forward and addressed inflation. senator, listen. >> i can't guarantee that we're going to be able to get rid of inflation, but i do think we (&.k we are not anywhere near a recession. jackie: when it comes to americans that you were referencing before all across this country in all different states, you know, i get he can't guarantee it and thinks he can but thought we would do a lot of other things that didn't necessarily work out and we're no longer near a recession and if the fed raises rates to slow the housing market and slow consumption and we put so much money out there, we are definitely due for a recession.
6:09 pm
as a matter of fact many of the ceos out there, senator, say we are due for it in 2023 if we're not in one already. >> you're hearing so much conversation about a double dip recession and indeed i think that as you look at escalation rate in prices for food and clothing and for shelter, you know that it is going to continue to cause us to fill those inflationary prices and the impact to every single day. people are tired of this and they want congress to get the spending under control and i look forward to working on that. jackie: we look forward to it too. thank you so much, senator. it's always great to see you. >> you got it. thank you. jackie: kari lake in a tight race for governor of arizona. another botched election as officials begin a hand count

audit and estimated 400,000 ballots are still unprocessed. plus, pennsylvania's incoming governor calling for responsible fracking and business pro next on "the evening edit". >> we've got the natural gas but we don't have enough pipeline capacity to get it to where it needs to go. first, we have got to get this pipeline development yesterday and this should have been happening years ago. we need to do that.

incoming governor who was and is the incoming governor and he impaneled a charge against a couple drilling companies in addition it resulted in recommendations that the incoming governor now says he supports to expand no drilling zones in pennsylvania and disclose the fracking chemicals that are used in case some someone's well is fouled and regulating the smaller pipelines under the ground and getting natural gas to the main pipelines. that business of oil and gas, the supplies about 500,000 jobs to the pennsylvania economy and about $800 billion to the economy. thank you. jackie. >> jackie: thank you, jeff
6:16 pm
flock. welcome to the show from the house appropriations committee our next two guests. start with you, congressman. what i'm hearing from this notion responsible frack asking basically more regulations and no fracking. it's not to say that the way we were fracking now -- the way we are fracking now or were doing it was irresponsible at all. it'll be interesting to see how this plays out in pennsylvania because when it came to voting for governor and came to the senate seat, people thought about abortion and thought about climate change and didn't think about the economy and jobs as they were expected to. >> well, jackie, please, call me guy as always. i can tell you this rhetoric we're hearing from the incoming governor, it's going to mean, it might sound nice on the surface but what it really equates to is less jobs, more expensive energy and dare i say a dirtier environment. remember that we were the only nation that signed on to the
6:17 pm
paris climate accord that was reducing our co2 emissions and we were doing it because we were burning clean natural gas largely from western pennsylvania. going after the industry, adding more regulations. that's just an economic -- economists will tell you that's another form of taxation. we deucing the amount of pipelines the amount of refineries and that'll make it more expensive to afford natural gas and who will bear the brunt in that? working families. let's not forget by the impact of manufacturing. you need natural gas, you need petroleum products for pet row chemicals that you use in everything you manufacture. so if we're increasing the cost of oil and gas, it's going to increase our -- not only our energy cost in measuring products and it's going to increase the cost of the pet row chemicals, which is going to lead -- exacerbate the inflation we're already having.
6:18 pm
jackie: these are all great points and elections have consequences and it would be difficult to feel sorry of the people of pennsylvania if they move forward about things being lost and the energy industry isn't booming in that state or they're having a tough time economically because it was a very clear and the handwriting was on the wall here. andy, if i can come to you and talk about president biden and the remarks he made at the white house yesterday because he felt like he didn't lose as much as expected and he doubled down on the policies. what we know now is there's going to be nobbiest here. he's been discussing the wind fall taxes on big oil as well and not just about pennsylvania at this point, but this is still about this war that's been waged on the oil and gas industry in this country. >> you know, the strange thing
6:19 pm
is in his answer to reporter's questions yesterday. he got all over the oil industry for having all the $100 billion in profits and asked them to increase production and refining. now, they don't sell oil for any different price than president biden sells when he takes it out of the strategic petroleum reserve. they sell for the same price as him because the market sets the price. but he's asking them to on one hand increase production and refining and at the same time he's committed. he said plainly, boldly, and with great elmore fade pattern he's going to destroy your fossil fuel sectors and we're going to invest in your business. then you've got the new governor of pennsylvania saying the real problem here is we don't have a way to transport the oil. gee, i wonder how we could solve that problem. jackie: we killed the pipelines. >> there's no bigamist reigns leading there; right. they're talk out of both sides
6:20 pm
of their mouth. it makes no sense. it's complete nonsense. energy prices will continue thursday. what's used for heating homes was up 20% in october over september and it's up about 70% year over year. when the winter hits people in pennsylvania, i'm from northern ohio and i know what it gets like in parts of pennsylvania, when winter hits in pennsylvania, the people that voted for these democrats and these policies, they need to take a look at their fuel bills and see what it takes to heat their homes and they've got nobody to blame but themselves. jackie: yeah, it's interesting to me and you bring up the point that the president says the record profits of the oil companies and big oil is raking it in and congress wants them to reinvest and he'll be worthless and limit fossil fuels and there's been no evidence over the course of time. that they have ever messed with prices in a way where there's been price fixing and even when prices are higher, it's the way
6:21 pm
the market works yet he wants them to artificially lower prices for consumers basically telling them they should engage in price fixing. it's wild. >> yeah, it is. we know this doesn't work. we had one of these back in the 80s and it was found it just made gasoline more expensive and energy more expensive. we had the tech industry seeing record profits during covid pandemic when they were pushing everybody to stay home and zero talked about hitting wind fall taxes, wind fall profit taxes from facebook and going and will amazon. it's only when it's -- google and amazon and it's only when it's the energy companies. jackie: that's a great point and we'll have you both on soon. thank you. a lot to talk about the only thing. >> thank you, jackiey. jackie: well, republicans poised to take the house and

investigation of hunter biden's business dealings and we'll discuss and the race for governor of arizona is very tight. kari lake calls out maricopa county for what she says is another botched up election and hand counting begins for another 400,000 ballots still unprocessed. more on "the evening edit" with sean duffy next. >> we have 460,000 votes that have not been counted. 20% of those machines wents down. we can't keep having this problem. get rid of those machines that are not reliable.
6:26 pm
jackie: arizona midterm elections still too close to call and katie hobbs widened the lead against kari lake as the state's deadlock senate race is one of the factors that could determine party control in washington. kelly o'grady in phoenix with more. >> reporter: good evening, jackie. i'm here in maricopa tabulation center where they count those votes and there's a presser we election officials behind me and they're responding to accusations from kari lake but they're shrugging off saying we're providing with a little update saying there's roughly
6:27 pm
400,000 votes to be counted and a release around 10:00 p.m. eastern and between 10 and 11:0. if you're like me, you'll be refreshing your twitter to see that. it'll be just about over 62,000 votes like we saw last night and let's check on where the senate is to see how that would impact that. currently about 100,000 votes are separating democratic incumbent mark kelly from blake masters. if that increases significantly it'll be tough for the gop candidate to claw back. what the candidates are waiting for is the early voting bat rolls dropped off -- ballots dropped off in person on election day and 290,000 votes in 2020 for context, it was 170,000. the day of dropoffs are what gop gubernatorial candidate kari lake is counting on and the governor's race is tighter than the senate race lake trailing by roughly 17,000 votes and less than a point separating the two and both candidates urged their
6:28 pm
base to vote on election day. originally we expected for the vote counting to be 95 to 99% done by tomorrow. officials say that will be delayed and into next week. give us a sense of where we're going for the election. back to you. jackie: kelly, thank you for that. people will be watching closely for those numbers and it's a very important state. for more, welcome to the show. former congressman. we're talking 17,000 votes and the senate is a wider spread there and still 400,000 outstanding with 100,000 separating the two candidates and anything could happen and thinking alaska the ballots that were dropped off day of. these were not mail in ballots that favor the democrats. these are day of, here's my ballot and like in-person
6:29 pm
voting. what are your thoughts about how this could go? >> yes, listening to kari lake and only half a point behind katie hobbs and feels good about the ballots that are yet to be counted and they'll be republican ballots that actually the voter came in with their ballot to make sure no one else touched it. they dropped it off. those are in kari lake's philosophy and probably republican voters probably trying to secure their ballot. again, i think that's a really good shot for kari lake. listen, blake masters, listen, this is a five point deficit. can he make it up? of course, that's why the race hasn't been called yet, but that's a far greater number, 100,000 votes to make up with 400,000 remaining. it's possible but it is a heavy, heavy lift. again, i think you're going to see at the end of the day, i'm going to look at my crystal ball and i think kari lake wins but hard for masters to get over the finish line. jackie: fair enough. if masters doesn't get over the finish line, all eyes on nevada
6:30 pm
and that one is also too close to call. but laxalt is in the lead. if the republican wins in nevada and loses in arizona, we're back at 2020 scenario where this runoff in georgia, you're laughing, i'm not laughing. it becomes crucial. >> you know, it does. first off, if republicans lose nevada, they've lost control of the senate and you want to win that seat in georgia but it has less impact, that runoff on december 6. looking to georgia, again, what's interesting here is you're not going to have kemp at the top of the ballot. he was giving lift to walker in the race. however there was an independent candidate who ran in the analysis would be that independent candidate who got 2% of the vote was probably taking votes from walker; right. with him out and just a warnock walker race, if those voters still come out and vote for walker, that could put walker over the edge. he could get to 50% and win down
6:31 pm
in georgia, but you're going to see -- listen, you're going to see so much money and so many adds and every politician that thinks they can help show up in georgia and dorallys and do do turnout the vote and half point margin one way or the other when we get to election night on december 6. jackie: i they you're right and money will pour in on both sides and a very expensive race and big guns coming out and the power of that across the country in other midterm races and i'm wondering because the expectation. donald trump can't speculate what it might be but having said that this runoff not till december -6z. is he going to make a move ahead of next tuesday ahead of the runoff and change calculus and shift plans? >> in my old district some people had counties and i had
6:32 pm
counties where they didn't like me and i didn't get many votes there. jackie: that's impossible. >> it's true. those counties, if i was asked to endorse a candidate or do gop do a rally for them. i'd say, listen, people don't like me here. you don't want me associated with you. you can do better if you go by yourself. what we have to do is take a look at georgia and can donald trump help walker. if he can, he should show up. if you think he's going to be a hindrance to walker, stay away. that analysis has to be done right now to make that decision whether trump comes in and if he can help, show up and if not, stay home. that race is too important. jackie: sean duffy, i don't know how hindu could not like you. makes no sense. president bind saying relationships with other cou countries are worth looking into and if they take control of the

the question of why was it suppressed and what is the involvement of the president and his brother and ultimately is there corruption at the highest levels of government which is key to the oversight committee of jurisdiction. jackie: from a financial standpoint we're helping fund their fight against russia and having said that, you think about who the big guy is and if he were joe bide and profiting off the business deals that hunter profited off of, that could influence his decision making as commander in chief. that's a serious problem.
6:39 pm
>> it is and i'm going to speak as a grandfather and hunter biden is the father of the president's grandchildren and concern of any grandfather includes the children and the person who supports them so when you look at whether money went to the biden family and ultimately to joe biden's benefit, it clearly did. he had a son who's a drug addict and a challenge to say the least and put him on air force 2 and vice president and supportive of him at a time when it's clear this is somebody who has been playing fast and loose with many laws including tax evasion. jackie: yeah, first lady of the united states jill biden has commented on this. this is what she had to say. everybody and their brother has investigated hunter and they keep at it and at it and at it. i know hunter is innocent. i love my son and i'll keep looking forward.
6:40 pm
your reaction? >> you know, the department of justice and the irs doesn't think he's innocent. they're actively investigating him so when the biden administration's own agencies are dealing with him for corruption, for tax evasion, even for having an illegal weapon, you don't have to ask whether or not this is fair to look into and in all fairness to the first lady, she protests too much. ja >> we'll see how if unfolded congressman darrell issa thank you. >> thank you. >> trouble at border, how will a new congress handle it? and hypocrisy, president biden torched over his call on investigate elon musk's foreign ties, white house officials are dodging questions, about the comments that the president made. >> once again. they of dodging. >> and congressman jeff van drew is right here coming on
