>> yeah. i've spent months on the ground doing research in cobalt mining in the democratic republic of the congo. it's a helloscape as you see from the photos. hellscape. old colonial servitude. poorest people scrounging for a dollar or two to gather cobalt to feed it up in the supply chain. cobalt is used in manufacture of almost every lithium-ion chargeable batter in the word smartphone, are mined in these conditions. liz: they make two dollars a day. these are toxic inhumane conditions, right. >> absolutely. cobalt is toxic to touch. toxic to breathe. thousands of people hammering in pits. people inhaling toxic cobalt dust all day. they suffer injuries, shattered legs. even are buried a live in tunnel

collapses. like the moral clock has been dialed back to colonial times, all in the scramble to get cobalt out of the ground in the congo, up to our chain in our sell phones and cars. liz: this is heartbreaking stuff. they don't want mining for electric car batteries here but done in the congo where child labor abuses occur with shocking frequency. that is what human watchdogs are saying. your new photos give details to the horror of the story. has anybody in government contacted you about this? >> my phone lines are open. if anyone, either side of the aisle stakeholder up the chain, tech company, ev company, want to solve the human rights and environmental violence taking place in the congo for cobalt mining i am here. i will take them there. it is a hypocrisy we're building our green future, green for us but utterly violent and degrading for the people of the
