kennedy: fed won't quit, interest rates going up again, this time 25 bases points, the eighth straight rate hike. to get a grip on inflation, chairman powell, said more americans losing their jobs. is part of the plan. >> we can say, i think for first time, that the process has started. unemployment will probably rise a bit from here, but i still think there is a path to getting inflation back to 2% without a really significant economic decline or increase in unemployment. kennedy: well, how is this? new report shows u.s. layoffs hit 2 year high last month, and more to come. fed said, one million more americans could lose their jobs between now and the end of the year. january jobs report comes out tomorrow, should we expect a blood bath. joining me now jonas

max ferris, let's discuss, a lot of big companies in particular tech companies, they are cutting jobs. is it because they have been having to pay so much in wages since the pandemic began? >> yes, those are two industries that over hired if anything, for tech a tech bubble and hard to hire people with all the start ups. that has been high wages, high offers stock options, it is collapsing on itself. financial services had a similar problem, every getting a mortgage when rates were low and real estate was hot during covid. both of those markets are in collapse. the rest of job market is strong, surprisingly strong considering how high they are raising rates and how quickly, if you work in real estate, that is a -- you are in a recession, almost in a

recession in a tech start up at-this-point, everywhere else there is a path that is rare. there has never been a path of note a recession with raising rates this rapidly, it will be unbelievably rare and a shock itf that happens, and wall street thinks that is happening, i am more suspicious we could have 5 plus percent rates and trouble with mortgages and not have a recession at some point this year, that view is the minority. now, everyone is getting optimistic. kennedy: it is unusual, as you point this out, there are certain parts of the economy that are all right in recession -- already in recession, is that typical, normally when there is a recession does every sector feel it? it is unusual to have just tech and financial services

looped into it and everything el might escape, and so why? >> i don't think a big industry can have a real hit without causing a recession of some measure, best example is 2000, just techs collapsed, the start ups it caused a recession that whole economy and stock market was down not just tech stocks. then 08 was the real estate sector. that collapsed, financial services in particular those are big industries, financial services and tech is america. when it boils down to it. financing stuff and technology. when either one of those in in trouble you have recession, we're in both right now but neither one is add bad as before, i would expect the drag to cause for whole gdp a recession, people working in other sectors may not feel it. >> to you feel like being the amazing c -- carnac .
