♪ stuart: that's the way to go. a little jimmy hendrix on a wednesday morning. that'll get you going. fired up. isn't that a beautiful view of new york city? blue skies, little cloud, empire state building. it's a wonderful city or at least it used to be. good morning, everyone. it's 10:00 eastern and let's get straight to the money. on the downside again, big loss yesterday, 574 points down for the dow, down 72 this morning. remember, we've got more fed testimony today, jobs friday and cpi next week. 10-year treasury, 3.94% backing off a little. price of oil, has it hit $80 a barrel? no, back down to $76 per barrel. bitcoin, our first check of bitcoin of the day and it's $21,989 per coin. down a little. job openings, this is the jolt number, we just got it. this is the -- jobs available. that's what it defines, jobs. what do you got?

lauren: decreased unexpectedly -- no, sorry, decreased expectedly to 10.8 million. this is on the last business day of january. the labor market is very hot still. that's the translation. the quits rate, number of people quitting, decreased 3.9 million with layoffs coming in at 1.7 million that increased so this is -- these are signs of a what softening -- somewhat softening jobs market. stuart: somewhat. lauren: accommodations and food services openings fell. stuart: that's contradicted a bit by the adp report this morning where we had 242,000 private sector jobs, which is a strong job market. it's inconclusive really. lauren: the fed looks at all of it. jobs friday. stuart: a downside mover about 30 points lower and off 100 points on the dow. lauren, thank you very much. now this. i've said it many times, endless

speculation about what the federal reserve is going to do is boring. we do not clutter up this program with inconclusive fed watching or we try not to. however, for those interested in politics and money, yesterday's fed testimony was fascinating. there was a five minute exchange between elizabeth warren and jay powell. jay powell exposed the foolishness of socialist economics. senator warren, socialist, insist that had inflation was the result of price gagging, supply chain -- gouge, supply chain problems and the war and the price hike would force 2 million more people out of work and disapproved of fed policy. powell responded quietly that inflation hurts everyone. that if nothing is done, inflation gets worse and working people suffer even more. my opinion, senator warren is wrong. first of all, she herself has a lot to do with the inflation we're experiencing and pushed

for maximum government spending. in fact, she wanted trillions more on top of trillions already spent and it is massive government spending that's a principle cause of today's 6% inflation. warren is a maximum spender of borrowed money. second, the senator does not approve of power strategy but what would she do about inflation? it didn't come out in tuesday's testimony, but she's an administer den supporter of price controls. we tried it 50 years ago and it didn't work. it is an example of warren's socialist thinking. in warren's world, the corporation is always wrong. banks, always wrong. but jay powell in my world is right. he is using the tools available to him to bring inflation down and if we don't act now, the people senator warren claims to support will get even worse off than they are now. see, if you can take a swipe at the socialists, there's nothing boring about the fed. second harper lanes of varney just getting started.

♪ stuart: all right, liz peek with us this wednesday morning. i say, it's the run away government spending that's getting us into this inflation mess. warren is wrong. what say you? >> i think there's no question about that. we know that's -- if you track the influx of federal spending on top of what was already a hot, fast recovering economy, stuart, that's what guided inflation. you can track it and it's very obvious what happened. democrats need a scapegoat because they're responsible for the surge in inflation, and because they pretend to care about middle class voters and middle class americans. the st. louis fed last year, i think it was, said that they have suffered the worst hit to real incomes in four decades. i mean, that's under democrats so democrats are out campaigning they're the champion of the little guy. the little guy is getting squashed by inflation. we all know that's true. all the studies show that's

putting a transgender woman on their candy wrapper for national women's day and a county in pennsylvania ditched being a sanctuary county. here's why this is happening, people are actually now having to pay a price for all these woke policies. their lives are in danger, their taxes are going up. their school rooms are full of people who shouldn't be there because they're undocumented and they've been allowed to come into our country by joe biden. we've talked about this before americans had to feel pain before they were going to turn on these policies and thousand they're beginning to feel -- now they're going to feel pain. our mayor is beginning to talk tough on crime and he knows in the next election he may get unelected because he ran on this campaign of cleaning up crime in new york. unless he does something about it. also we know our city is recovering because of all the stupid policies they've put in place. stuart: chicago was a long way to bring a rally of big cities in america.

liz peek, thank you for being here. the federal trade commission launched an investigation into twitter, lauren, what are they looking for? lauren: they're demanding twitter and elon musk turn over documents for privacy protections and they want the list of all the journalists that had access to the twitter files. they're looking for a lot. i'll call this an escalation of the tension between musk and inflation and the intensity, ftc sends more than a dozen letters to twitter since elon musk took it over months ago and that's heavy handed and musk responds with a quickful shame of investigation for government agency for political purposes and suppression of the truth and the gop led judiciary committee is pushing back on ftc's demand and they say, look, the timing, scope, and frequency suggest mart san motivation. >> i -- partisan motivation, stuart: i think he's right on this one. let's move on, elon musk says twitter's cash flow could turn

positive. when? lauren: next quarter so a matter of months. break even or turn positive and it's a big deal because he said the company was on track to lose $3 billion. why? ad revenue came down, costs went up, he came in and cut costs obviously with all those layoffs. twitter is not out of the woods and had to borrow a lot of money to take the company private and just the annual interest on what he borrowed is $1.5 billion. stuart: that's a ton of money right there. thanks, lauren. fed chair jerome powell once again warning about the risks of getting involved with cryptos. watch this. >> don't want to stifle innovation and done want to stifle innovation just to favor incumbents and that kind of thing and watching what's been happening in the crypto space and what we see is quite a lot of turmoil and see fraud and lack of transparency and run risk and lots of things like that. stuart: ryan payne is with me this morning and ryan normally

covers straightforward the stock market but comment on cryptos. seems to me, cryptos are rapidly becoming a thing of the past that likes spacs or the meta verse or sho something like thad not the variety of the future and talking about that and keep in mind this isn't a surprise. at this point it cops down at $69,000 for a pet rock now you paid $21,000 for a pet rock. there's no real intrinsic value and didn't use it in society today and the bod tom line will continue -- bottom line will go by the wayside and 22, 23,000 and stays there for months on end. is somebody keeping it that way and is it a manipulation here? >> casino chips disguised as financial assets and people are gambling in the assets so i don't want to call it an asset and pure gambling speculation and part of the stock market here.

stuart: to me, it seems i've said to all of our guests and they're careful at bonds and if you can get a 4 or 5% return with limited risk if you hold to maturity, limited resident and can better than the risk of the stock market with all the new economic numbers coming out in the next few days. >> two things, stocks are a better long term investment, for sure. bonds are attractive and two year treasury is the best since 2007 in yield and that's a long time and mistake investors make right now is i'd buy a longer term bond portfolio and the fed will pivot and rates coming down again and one year treasury that's f phenomenal called reinvestment risk and 21 month asks your return becomes due. stuart: putting fresh money into treasuries versus treasure money into stocks. i would go short term bonds, not stocks. that's me.
