7:01 pm
if as financial crises go, this one happened pretty quickly. in fact, it was only last week when analysts began to realize something was fishy. nervous customers then tried to get their money out, but they were turned away, and on friday svb fell apart like a wet paper bag whether it was because of interest rates or bad management or whatever else, that remains to be seen. but earlier today president biden said the rest of us will not be on the hook for the bank's failure. watch. >> no losses -- and this is the an important point, no losses will be borne by the taxpayers. let me repeat that. no losses will be borne by the taxpayers. instead, the money will come from the fees that banks pay in to the deposit insurance fund. kennedy: i'm so ire thed. treasury secretary janet yellen promising the fed will not be following the playbook of the great recession of 2008. >> during the financial crisis,

7:05 pm
and then they were forced to raise rates so quickly. a bank like this, why was a bank like this so vulnerable to rising interest ratesesome. >> so now there's some idiosyncrasies with this bank, just so you know, it was many in silicon valley, so it was dealing with those customers mainly. but it also, you know, risk taking is enchemmic. you're getting crypto, that's corrected. i know bitcoin was up a little bit. it'll correct more. amc, those crazy meme stocks, they're all getting smoked. heir probably -- they're probably going to get smoked more: housing values are coming down. you could say why are we raising rates. well, if you want 7% inflation for the rest of your life which will destroy society which meansst the almost like working during a recession, well, then take 7%. so we're going to have raising rates. hay may back off temporarily, but they'll probably have to come back. why was this different? just got off the phone with a

they're major players -- 250,000. if they're going to take that type of risk, why does the fed -- and, by the way, they're not small. kennedy: no. but the federal government shouldn't come in every disaster, and they've got enough regulation -- >> why were they given bank status? a hedge fund is given bank status. kennedy: interesting. see, charlie's the only person saying this was a hedge fund operating like a bank. >> it's a hedge fund givenback status. i want that job. kennedy: let's do it. >> could you imagine our hedge fund? 7:10 pm
that they've got it under control, that the banking system is strong. in a lot of ways how they talked about this reminded me about how pete buttigieg talked about a train derailment. oh, they happen all the time. when you send that message, it's supposed to calm us down that they foresaw this. but they very clearly didn't if they're also talking about regulations being the problem. they're trying to have it both ways. they're trying to keep the system intact and have our confidence level high, but they're also trying to play politics. and, you know, to your question, yeah, of course it's time to play politics because that's literally what they do. you and i, everyone watching can't stand it, we're disgusted by it, but for them to try to make this about trump, i guess i would say what haven't they a made about trump? kennedy: marie, they blew it on inflation. they said it was transitory, can't do take it seriously, didn't raise rates when that was warranted back when inflation started. it spiraled out of control because of the rampant spending, and now we are on the verge of

more rates. i'm sorry, but i don't trust this administration in the economic arena. >> well, look, when it comes to this bank, the problem was they took incredibly risky behavior. when they had to talk about it publicly, did that terribly, made people nervous, made people scared. and then you saw what happened in a very short period of time. and, look, a lot of these silicon valley tech folks are really opposed to regulation, but regulation in the case prevented a further disaster from happening. the government is helping insure that workers at these companies get paid on time. but, you know, it is true that republicans in 2018 rolled back regulations that could have foretold what was happening here because they rolled back regulations on small and medium-sized banks including on risk assessments that could have told us this before it happened. that's just a fact, right? we want our banking system to be secure. if we don't want a 2008 again,
7:12 pm
we need good regulation, we need better regulation, and it's not just a wild, wild west here kind of situation that we should have. that always gets average americans into trouble. they're not protected under -- kennedy: yeah, but there has to be responsibility for the people running the bank. and the fact that, you know -- >> yes. kennedy: -- the hair the only imposed stress test is if you have over $250,000 -- 250 million in equity, they had 200 million. they were too busy selling their shares in the company and giving themselves bonuses. this ftx mentality that has taken over silicon valley, and that doesn't stop at the banking. you know, you have the chief risk officer talking about safe spaces and blogging. it's, like, a safe space should be a bank where your money doesn't evaporate overnight. but, you know, marie is talking about regulation. part of regulation is, like it or not, bailouts. if you know you're going to be bailed out and you're acting like the money train is rideable
7:13 pm
forever, then why wouldn't you act irresponsibly, brad? >> the yeah, exactly. i mean, silicon valley bank is in this mess because of their very reckless and high risk decisions that heavy made -- they've made. we have to ask ourselves, why are they behaving like that with their financial future on the line, do you think? well, i think it has its roots in something called moral hazard. back in 2008 biden, obama and the rest of the gang bailed out banks bigtime -- bank -- and when you catch people when they fall, they're going to run a lot more recklessly. ma'am if the government said they would -- imagine if the government said they would pay for any car repairs. people would ding up their cars and not worry about it as much because they know somebody else will be to there to catch them when they have to the face the consequences. we're witnessing that here. and while i think it's good that the biden administration's response isn't a full bailout is and won't directly hurt
7:14 pm
taxpayers, it is the being funded through fees but, ultimately, that will be passed on to consumers most likely. and ultimately, this is going to worsen that moral hazard by saying they messed up, but we caught them. why wouldn't people keep gambling, keep taking risks in the future? we are incentivizing bankers and the people making these decisions to keep on gambling with our financial futures by bailing them out when they mess up. kennedy: no bailouts. all right. the panel will return in moments! but first, president biden approving a huge oil drilling project in alaska. despite saying he would end fossil fuels. that's weird. progressives furious, does this mean it's the right move? we discuss next. ♪ ya know, if you were cashbacking you could earn on everything with just one card. chase freedom unlimited. so, if you're off the racking... ...or crab cracking, you're cashbacking.
