investigation into journalist matt taibbi on christmas eve of last year. it was a saturday. three weeks after he exposed documents showing government officials pressuring twitter to censor content. on his twitter account yesterday, taibbi said the details came from a new letter to the irs commissioner by house judiciary chair jim jordan. the journalist said the move was meant to intimidate. listen. >> this is quite brazen, what they're doing. i mean, they had to know that this was going to the come out. also visiting me on my, at my home on the day i'm testifying before congress. that shows you that they're probably not terribly worried about the optics of all this, which i think is even more concerning. >> reporter: the sensitive documents taibbi exposed came from the state department, the pentagon and the cia. for its part, the irs told the committee it was trying to insure the reporter wasn't a victim of identity theft. and that they had tried to contact him earlier by letter.
5:03 pm
now, taibbi said neither he nor his accountant received those letters. house judiciary chairman jim jordan, he isn't buying it. listen. >> maybe the fbi's going to come forward and tell us, oh it's just one big coincidence. okay, but i kind of doubt it. and everyone i've talked to about that fact pattern says there is no way this was chance. the had to be deliberate. they were intentionally targeting the guy who elon musk picked to do the twitter files and give us all kinds of valuable information. >> reporter: and here's the kicker, liz, taibbi was pound to to owe no money -- found to to owe no money. in fact, irs concluded it owed him money. when we asked the i are rs about all of this this, they old the us federal law prohibits the agency from commenting on taxpayer matters. his? elizabeth: thank you so much. joining us now, congressman jeff van drew and congressman russell fry. gentlemen, it's good to see you. we've never seen in modern history so many whistleblowers

5:05 pm
choice. it's something i feel like i have to do. elizabeth: congressman van drew, he oversaw the team at the irs of a dozen criminal investigators that the doj officials just disbanded. what's your reaction? >> well, first of all, my reaction is that he's a patriot and a true american. second reaction is we have never seen anything like this in the history of america. this is worse than watergate in aggregate. literally, these agencies including the i are rs -- the irs at the top levels, not the working people, but at the top levels have become giant dung heaps of corruption. they immediate to be chained. agency -- they need to be changed. agencies that were supposed to be protecting americans now need protection from -- we need to protect americans from them. it's unbelievable. and you've got to restructure. elizabeth: so what congressman van drew just said. congressman fry, mr. shackly is
5:06 pm
scheduled to testify behind closed doors tomorrow for house ways and means. whistleblowers say doj officials demanded the case files to cover up their own unethical behavior. if you were sitting on ways and means, what would you ask them, mr. shackly? >> well, i would ask him, first of all, why, you know, with him and what he's done for this country what steps were not followed? walk us through those protocols. he laid those out. obviously, he's come forward very bravely into the public square, but what steps were mishandled and whom you dealing with. i think we need to get to the bottom of this this because, congressman van due is right. we've never seen -- van due is -- van drew is right. the fbi is so willing to throw any uncorroborated evidence against a sitting president, but they are protecting, it looks like, this president. so where's the rub? what's the difference here, and why are we doing this within our government?
5:07 pm
elizabeth: okay. so the other thing too given what congressman fry just said, house oversight chair choamer was with us last night. he sent a letter warning fbi director wray he's going to hold him in contempt of congress if he doesn't turn over a document an fbi whistleblower says details alleged bribery involving then-vice president biden and a porn national. the fbi says they can't -- a foreign national. couldn't they just redact and black out names? >> yeah, they could. they could redact and give us the pertinent information. and secondly, you know, we this judiciary and russell fry knows this too, congressman fry, we've had conversations with the fbi and asked them over and over again for pertinent information, but we get a piece of paper or or multiple pieces of paper that are 98% redacted, nothing that you can read or use on it. there is really -- the collusion's not with trump, the
5:08 pm
collusion is with these agencies, the department of justice, the cia, the fbi. again, i just really want people to think about this, agencies that were there, that are there to protect americans, americans now need protection from them. our country's going astray here with their leadership. it must change. we need major restructuring in these agencies. elizabeth: yeah. the voter polls show that. congressman fry, we learned more from mr. comer, he says this fbi document details the timeline of june 2020 the, it involved $5 million. other things he's saying is the fbi told congress, lawmakers it had these confidential human resources reports on biden in the period, that there are a lot of source materials coming in on what's going on. what can you tell us about what this all is about, what's going on? can you el us any more? >> i think the chairman's exactly right.
5:09 pm
these aren't, this is not classified, could you just redact the names in some of this sensitive material. but the bottom line is this: the fbi's not cooperating. we set their budgets. we set the expectations of this agency. hay work for the american people, and they need to be brought to heel. i think chairman comer's been very clear about this, very firm with director wray that if he because not comply, that contempt is on its way. it's not something we want to do, but they work for the american people. elizabeth: got it. congressmen, thank you for joining us tonight. we're going to stay on this story. >> thank you. elizabeth: let's welcome back g gop pollster lee carter and hal lambert. mr. lambert, thanks for joining us, you're a former trump donor, you now endorse ron desantis. lee, the fallout of the meltdown and the glitches of ron desantis the launching his 2024 campaign on twitter. is this a desantis problem or a twitter problem? >> both. look, i think that it was a very important moment for ron desantis last night.
5:10 pm
he really needed to reset his campaign. he's had a very unfortunate two months where he went from neck and neck with donald trump in the polls to trailing between 20 the-30 points. it's not a good situation. i think his hope last night was to do a twitter live interview with elon musk, show the business side of him, the capitalist side of him, the freedom side of him, the free speech side of him, all of those things that people really liked about to begin with. unfortunately, that message wasn't able to get out last night, and i think that's going to hurt him. he's going to be trying now, continuing to try and have a moment, but his big moment, i think, fizzled. elizabeth: so what lee just said, you know, people like desantis, hal, because he bullets through, he doesn't care a what the media says. he's sticking to the what he feels will fix country what's appeal of ron desantis to you? >> well, first of all, i want to say i don't think twitter delay and some of the technical issues were that huge of a deal. the number of people trying to dial in to watch that or at least, you know, log in to watch
5:11 pm
that is what cause it. there were millions of people trying to watch. so that overloaded the twitter capabilities, and that's what caused the initial glitch. but he went on -- elizabeth: do we know it was millions? we saw it was 600,000 trying to get in. >> no. there -- can well -- the. [laughter] that's not what we're seeing on our end. i will say this, the message that ron desantis the put out while he was on that interview and subsequently later on fox, i think those messages really resonate. so this is just the very beginning. the polls, it's interesting you're abe to be polls, i mean, he hasn't even entered the race until yesterday, and so we're going to see what happens with these polls. i think there's going to be a narrowing pretty quickly between now and the next month or so as he gets out there. elizabeth: well, that's interesting. there's a ec call difficulty there. we should point out trump currently leads desantis by about 30 points in the real clear politics average of polls. voters are talking about what desantis the was saying, and we're talking to voters. what he was saying was clear or and correct and not the gaffes, not the gaslighting, not
5:12 pm
deceptions coming out of the white house. let's watch desantis. watch. >> i'm running to lead a great american comeback. our decline as a country is not inevitable, it is a choice. and i think we can choose a better pathway. it's a national emergency. we'll mobilize all resources to construct the border wall,. >> shut the border down. we're not going to be entertaining asylum claims for people coming across the border illegally. we're going to have things like remain in mexico so we don't is have the incentives to come illegally. we coneed to hold these mexican drug cartels accountable. the status quo is not acceptable, and we are going to the make sure that we constitutionalize this government. these agencies are ole out of control, there's no accountability, and we are going to bring that in a very wig way -- big way. if an agency is engaging in conduct that is outside the realm of what is legal or you think it's not good for the public interest, then you can remove the funding for those, for those operations.
5:13 pm
elizabeth: you heard that, lee. what do you think, lee carter? >> look, i think he went into a lot of detail on a lot of different topics, but the thing that is most less plant to the american people is -- resonant to the american people is what he's done this florida. it was a thriving economy when everybody else was struggling, and people want to hear less about some of the issues that he's dealing with on the woke wars and more about how he's going to improve our day-to-day life. i think he had a lot of messages that were really, really positive last night. when he talk about not bowing to the elite, but rather practicing more common sense, i think that's going to resonate with a lot of folks, but this message has on to be the repeat frequently and often, and not everybody knows the ron desantis of florida. he's addressing the problems that are most important to the american people; namely, the economy, immigration, crime and safely. and he's endone that this florida, he -- in florida, he's going to have to prove that on the national stage. elizabeth: hal, the white house messaging is failing.
5:14 pm
biden's rating approval, approval rating on the economy is now in the mid 30s. it's a backlash against the far left and white house agenda. desantis, to the what lee is saying, he's saying florida has lowest jobless rate among the 10 most populist states, it has a $ -- 20 the billion surplus. it looks like he's got a message, but the question is the, will it get out? will that message get out? >> oh, it'll absolutely get out. i mean, governor desantis is going to be hitting all the early states. you're going to see him in iowa, new hampshire, south carolina, ask he's to going to have the money to get his message out. so you're exactly right, lee. i mean, he will have to continue to put that message out because people know who he is, but they don't really know his record. and so that's what he's going to get out there and talk about. i think as he does that, these poll numbers are going to turn, and you're going to see a big change. elizabeth: got it. thanks for joining us on the. we're staying on this new trend, it's happening now in
