about a basis.and 3.83%. supreme court with the use of race, what are americans saying about this decision? >> it seems most americans ag agree, there's supportive of the outcome, supreme court restricting the use of race as a factor in college admissions. 52% of americans according to a new poll. this follows the massive landmark decision from last w week. about one third of americans say they disapproved of the court's decision that american opinions change when we start to take a closer look about closer racial groups and whether they have a fair shot of acceptance. americans less likely to think black and hispanic students have a fair chance to get accepted. 47% think is a fair chance for

>> get down to this issue, you have a new op-ed saying quote trump should make police exempt from federal income taxes. why should he do that? >> we have a crisis in america right now, 230 cops killed on duty between 2019 and 2022. we've seen resignations go down 45%. people aren't showing up for the classes and we need to provide a shot in the arm to increase morale and incentives and encourage veteran cops to leave soon, stick around two or three or four years if possible and say will treat you the way we treat combat, close to the same for cops. that's a boost and turnaround the mess since the george floyd rise defend the police black lives matter, has led to this explosion. >> how do you pay for it? >> it costs $7200. average.

stage and when he walked off. he was there to support terms bid to be the gop presidential nominee but he's faced criticism from trump supporters because he's changed direction on his support of the former president. he's also supported ukraine's defensive efforts travel to kyiv but democratic senator richard blumenthal last summer and all that not pleasing to trump's base. one has to wonder whether this perception in california stains senator graham because he is represented of of the state since 2003 and told the crowd his home lived 15 miles from the area, literally hitting close to home. >> but he kept smiling which was all he could do. let's get back to the markets slightly lower but the volumes are thin, a lot of people are not at work. markets close at 1:00 but dow jones turned it around, a quarter of the%. nasdaq slowly lower.

sydow joins me now to talk about the markets. great to have you here. you believe the fundamentals not here right now. we have a weak economy, struggling labor market so as we look toward now the second half of the year, and we replicate what we did in the first half of the year? >> happy fourth and thanks for having me. this whole year has been a momentum push led by the retail investors. if you told me in january markets would be where they are right now, i would say you are crazy. fundamentally i think the numbers, the math don't support it right now. however, you've got to make a little while the sun shines and take advantage. got to be very cautious i think it's momentum keeps on, if the feds only raise rates two more times, especially if they take a pause in july, i think we can

finish up the year pretty st strong. >> is there still more room to run for the big tech names or is that come and gone for the investor? >> i think there is a possibility for sure. i think there's just so much economic news coming out, the recent supreme court decision on people having to repay or pay back student loans starting october, it's little things that will have impact, not just on the economy but the markets go will see more of that in october and number but i think there is more room especially with ai being so popular and getting a lot of ground. >> i have to leave it there but thank you for taking the time this monday to join the show, we appreciate it. lydia, come back on here. the markets new today, expected that but there are some numbers

strips to help the homeless recover from substance abuse but is not helping or hurting the drug crisis? >> i believe it's hurting. the county of san diego racing harm reduction strategy, give people needles and crack pipes and access to the paraphernalia they need to use drugs and what they are doing is encouraging use which is what california doing is with homelessness. they encourage homelessness and this crisis -- tactic in california has been a failure from harm reduction to homelessness, everything about this is failure and i say this not only is the mayor and a doctorate in psychology. >> el cajon city council taking a look at san diego's newly approved encampment band. bill, could you adopt a similar policy? >> we were looking to see if they had anything we didn't

have. a pervasive and already, we don't allow camping on the streets at all and haven't for a couple of years and we have enough shelter beds to bypass so we legally cannot allow captains and of course they pop up every day and we spent time taking them down but we don't allow it. >> how do you fix the homeless crisis? is a problem in your area and many cities across the country, the answer, do you think? >> is a tough question but the honest answer is we have to have the political will to do it. if we say homelessness is not a viable lifestyle choice and tell people addicted by the way, as a motel professional i can tell you most people on the streets are addicted to drugs and alcohol. i know those anecdotal stories people who are not but if we are willing to address the crisis at the root cause which is drug and alcohol abuse and willing to tell people you have two choices, either get off the

streets and get into treatment are going to incarceration, we can solve the problem. ashley: you are not far from the border, eastern san diego, we know the drugs coming across the border. he must have been feeling that, how do we stop that? was the answer with that? >> we've got to address from the national perspective, address the border crisis and put in new laws that protect the border and do not allow this pervasive open border concept. obviously we are going to get a lot of people and human trafficking but there will be a lot of drug trafficking. we seem to percent rise in overdose deaths the last year end that's over 100,000. ashley: have you seen a large number of undocumented migrants coming to your city to they generally move on somewhere else past el cajon? >> we were ready for that but you are right, they've moved pastors and we not seeing undocumented migrants here.

what we do see is the county putting homeless people, a significant number of people in that kind of a problem. ashley: we have to leave it there but the mayor of el cajon, thank you for taking the time with us. now this, thousands of hotel workers in california are on strike, walked off the job. what are they asking for? >> more money, better benefits, we are talking thousands of unionized hotel workers across socal, started a strike yesterday morning impacting more than a dozen hotels across l.a. and santa monica. the union is called united here local 11 a represents 32000 hospitality workers. they want to negotiate a 5-dollar hike in wages among other benefits. the union said friday the new contract would cover workers 65 hotels. they are frustrated because they say hotels received billions of

dollars in federal bailout during the pandemic and wages have not kept up with the cost of housing inflation. they are right on that. given this holiday weekend got great timing : also huge anime expo right now, lawyers for hotels say they've offered wage increase of $2.50 for the first year, rising to $6.25 increase the next four but still no agreement yet. ashley: right during the holidays, maximum impact large percentage of californians want to leave the state but how many are we talking? >> 40%. that's according to a new california community pool. these folks are concerned about the cost of living in cali california. more than eight out of ten said they were unsatisfied with the cost of everyday expenses, six out of ten say the cost of living is a key reason they are

considering leaving california. another 56% say their dissatisfied with the cost of homes in particular and 46% say they can't pay for an unexpected expense like an emergency, they can't afford to save money, that is troubling. safety is also on their minds, one out of every two presidents say they are not satisfied with safety in their local communities. a lot of problems. ashley: that's why they are moving to texas and florida. let's look at the markets as we get to the break. right around up and down on all three major industries, the dow slightly lower. s&p slightly higher. now show me walgreens planning to close 150 stores in the u.s. and 300 in the uk. they blame emerging challenges. walgreens did not specify which locations will be closed. they expect stores to shut by may, 2024. it took three years to convince

great to see you, chad. what are the candidates saying about the rulings? >> the gop candidates trying to distinguish themselves before the baseplate of the summer and also using recent supreme court decisions to stake out turf like the ruling last week on affirmative action. >> affirmative action was a temporary solution, designed to make sure we open doors that hadn't been opened before. we are all judged not on the color of her skin the content of our character and on this case, gpa. >> rulings large this summer, the opinion from the court that christian web designer can refuse to make websites for same-sex weddings. >> gay people have the right to marry, the same way a web designer has a right to say according to the religion they don't want to so i don't think it hurts us at all. >> former texas representative will hurt his new entrance into the gop field, concerned about what the ruling means for gay

within the next 12 months compared to 42% of millennial's, 28% of gen x. you are gen z, right? why the angst? >> i'm not disgruntled. i'm going to be here but a few factors. one is the fact that we started our entire careers in the work from home era so we have the laptop entitlement from day one and injures an anticapitalist work culture and regeneration, as well as a general fiber if you say you feel crappy or you are down low energy, is true, there's no pushing back. ashley: anticapitalist? >> we are pretty warm to socialism i would say and i think it's almost as though it's an imposition to ask us to work which is unfortunate attitude. how can we bury burned out if we can literally just got started? ashley: next one. he spoke to asian-american

students about the supreme court's decision to end affirmative action and they told you they are getting to the first college choice of now giving a boost for what else did they tell you? >> i was a mixed picture, is going to be a more holistic analysis of applicants but also the incentive the schools put in front of kids especially students of color to talk about their race and applications so they are not necessarily directly saying we will admit you for that reason but the supreme court so, so if you can talk about it in your essays and consider that so i spoke to students of color who said it's a sad thing they feel as though the personalities are find and pressured to talk about their race as their entire candidacy. ashley: as opposed to just their ability. >> abilities and passions and that's a concern going forward in a way this discrimination against asian americans may still continue under the radar. ashley: people want to say i'm

here on my merit and that's a good thing for your own self image. >> and a large concern for students of color and i would say all and all its victory for asian students have systemically been discriminated against just to get a recruitment letter, you need to 50 additional sat points and the numbers speak for themselves. ashley: gen z probably not happy about their student debt wiped out, i'd imagine of course you want someone to pay for it. >> gen z of his little different, 1 million fewer college students right now in the beginning of the pandemic. many gen z saw what happened to millennial's with the false hope college degree isn't guaranteed to success going forward a lot of us are looking more holistically saying maybe i don't want to go to the same route. i didn't finish my degree. ashley: let's face it, you end up with a bunch of debt.

morning, so kind. when you look at the grill, this is one that will cost more come this july 4 holiday but we've got the whole spread so let's start with delicious burgers i made. look at ground beef, up 4% in cost. family is paying 1154. then it's not just the patty, it's a whole thing. you want to save your waistline and wallet, skipped the buns because those are up 17% in cost so maybe overall more health conscious, grilled chicken. chicken wrap, down 9% in cost so interesting beef is up. input cost of the firm are up so feed, fertilizer making cows more expensive, chicken, eggs last year there were some record but the avian flu has come down to the chicken population has grown up and that's why we look at better prices. i want to switch to deserts. bold move, it's very hot today.

wyatt, what is the biggest mistake swimmers make when they get caught in the riptide? >> happy fourth of july. it had 11 on the speech this year, one that happened right there and one right there, no lifeguards and there is a lifeguard a mile and half that way. the thing that happens is the fact that they are not in front of a lifeguard and get caught in regard. you can't panic. rip currents will not harm you, just pull you from the shore and if you don't panic and maintain for a little bit until somebody can help you. ashley: i've been told just let it take you out until you can get parallel to the beach and then come in, it's that simple but people panic and try to swim against the current and that's where they get in current and troubled.

>> absolutely. your chances of drowning in front of lifeguard, one in 18 million. there's interesting studies with parallels are not exactly, where we are here you have recurrent after recurrent after recurrent so the main thing is joe panic, just relax and it will release you and know the past when it like to go. ashley: i asked about the card shortage, it's causing hundreds of beaches to close, one grandmother in ohio has come out of retirement and took a summer to help is a lifeguard because the local pool couldn't find enough people. my question is, why doesn't anyone want to be a lifeguard anymore? >> a lot to unpack, when i became a lifeguard late 80s and 90s, we have the show called baywatch. everybody wanted to be a lifeguard and have that

lifestyle. we just don't have the interest. due to the fact that we don't have lifeguards, all kinds of creative ideas, talking about higher pay and incentives to get people out as well as putting up flotation devices on the beach because we don't have lifeguards in the areas. ashley: soleimani incentives haven't worked is what you are saying. >> i think what we need to do is revisit lifeguarding and treated like fire, police and it's a recreational fun time right now. i made a career out of it and it's rewarding and you can take a career out of it. ashley: we thank you and we just wish there were more of you. thank you for joining us this
