also texas launches a major new block decade to stop -- blockade to stop illegal immigrants. i'm elizabeth macdonald, "the evening edit" starts right now. ♪ ♪ elizabeth: welcome to the hoe. former president trump again getting a huge show of support. look at those shots of law enforcement supporting anymore l.a. on the tarmac there. crowds turned out for him, he showed up for a fight in vegas. we've not the footage. this is after 50,000 showed up for his rally in south carolina, and president biden, he's overseas leaving behind a growing number of headwinds and headaches for his 2024 bid. he's in london ahead of a trip to lithuania to attend the nato summit. gerri williss is live in new york with more on the story. >> reporter: and right, liz, the jobs machine appears to be showing some cracks with minority job seekers feeling the brunt here. while the overall unemployment ticked down to 3.6,

african-americans' unemployment has risen 1.3 percentage points since april to 6%. that's nearly double what white workers experience. other minorities also saw hikes last week, the jobless rate rising to 4.3% for hispanics and 3.2 for asian workers. now, the biden administration has been touting the june report as an example of how bidenomics is working, but the report suggests otherwise while june added 209,000 jobs to the economy, that was way down for may and below analyst expectations. and it also has people believing another rate hike is coming when the federal reserve meets next month which would be a 22-year high that, in turn, will make consumers battle with inflation even harder. while inflation is way off its peak from june, it's till pressuring wallets at 4%. remember, that's double the fed's to target of 2%. americans are less prepared than

they may have been connected to cocaine in the west wing? >> yeah. the united states secret servicy know the answer. they need to release that answer. there are cameras everywhere. of you have to pass multiple security checkpoints. you can't just wander around the white house or the old executive office building without triggering where with you're going and what you're doing. so to systematically blame somebody else and say it's automatically not the bidens, they don't know, so they're making that up. elizabeth: yeah, they're making it up ad hoc and on the fly. bill, there's also this too, nancy pelosi's leading the president's 2024 fund raising. bill, why is nancy pelosi silent on how the president still would not acknowledge his seventh granddaughter by hunter biden? pelosi said she's all about the children. so has biden. look at "the new york times"' maureen dowd going after biden's cruelty and lack of decency when he's campaigned saying he's going to restore decency? what's decent about this? >> yeah, there's nothing decent

preparing military devices and what not. and so this idea that we are no longer decoupling, but we're diversifying and derisking, we're in a really hard place that was created by our own doing, and i don't think, again, showing the weakness really helps the positioning. elizabeth: china respects strength. trump knew that. trump is touting his economy also. under trump median household income rose to the highest level ever. the poverty rate hit a record low. more americans were employed than ever before. the unemployment rate fell to a 50- year low. so how does that compare to bidenomicss? >> bidenomics is a disaster. what's happening, liz, is we're seeing personal recessions. we're seeing, as gerri willis said at the top of the hour, people who are having to dip into their savings and go into debt in order to keep up with their cost of living. and so if you with ask anybody are they better off today than

elizabeth: joining us now, new york post columnist karol markowitz. it's a pleasure having you back on again. >> thank you sap. elizabeth: it's good to see you. twitter and social media lit up this weekend over the contrast between former president trump getting crowds in las vegas and los angeles and then biden at the beach. i mean, trump got a huge show of support from law enforcement at the l.a. international airport yesterday, tens of thousands for his rally in south carolina. what did you make of the contrast in the imagery here? >> well, i love, you know, to see that contrast because i think the president is really out to lunch and that american people should realize that they have a president who's just never really around. he vacations all the time, he's sort of out of it when he is in public, he doesn't answer questions. but i would warn republicans against the idea that the

election will be won on social media. yes, the contrast is great, but i think it was great in 2020 as well. i think there's going to be an uphill battle to beat joe biden, crazy as that may sound. the incumbent is tough to beat even at the best of times, and i worry they'll rely on look how good our candidates look, that doesn't win elections. elizabeth: let's watch former president trump in action. watch this. >> to be known from now on as crooked joe biden. we're using the word crooked for joe biden because joe biden is the most crooked president in the history of this country by a factor of hundreds. he's a crook. one of the things i've been talking about you have to say before anybody, we are going to end men joining women's teams. [cheers and applause] no more men in women's sports. we're going to deport the criminal illegal aliens that have come into our country. [cheers and applause]

who wants open borders? who wants to have people coming in, who wants people coming in from foreign countries? who wants it? elizabeth: so when you hear all that, karol, we heard what you said about it's hard to beat an incumbent. "usa today" said trump, what he's looking like is 2016 when he was an up and coming contender. he's polling 53% real clear politics average in gop voters, double digits ahead of the rest of the pack. >> well, again, i would say that it's very early. it's july. in november 2007 i predicted john mccain would be the nominee, and that was a crazy thing to predict and, of course, he ended up being the nominee. i think that it's a long road. i just worry about republicans resting on their laurels and thinking that everything is going to be easy because of how bad joe biden looks. he does look bad. but look at what just happened in the midterms. his party won a lot of things and, you know, the wave that the republicans expected and counted on didn't happen. so, look, i would love to see a

republican candidate win in the next election, that's my personal goal. but i think that republicans need to really take this election far more seriously. just calling names, crooked joe biden, it's a great line, it's an applause line, but it really, it doesn't resonate, i think, the way that we hoped that it would. elizabeth: critics are saying that, you know, and economists are saying and watchdog groups are saying that biden did the student loan bailout to turn out the midterm vote is, you know, the younger e vote, right? there's also this, trump faces two criminal investigations, multiple prones. his former chief of staff john kelly claims in a statement that trump discussed using the irs to retaliate against least lisa page and peter strzok to are retailuate dependent them. -- retaliate against them. an ad campaign in key early primary states like iowa and south carolina to stop trump are from getting the gop nomination,

so there's those headwinds too. >> well, yes, absolutely. and of course joe biden did the student loan thing to bring out the vote. and remember, he's still president. he could do manager like that again for the next -- something like that again for the next election. i think handing out to his supporters has been part of his philosophy, and it does drive people to the polls if they think the president's going to pay off their loan. another thing, again, republicans immediate to be war -- need to be wary of. the president has the power at the very minimum to promise or to try to just suggest, i think it often is enough to to drive people to the polls. elizabeth: got it. >> so i think the republicans need to really worry about all of this. again, your point about the midterm election is the one that i hope to keep make which is they did it once, and so don't count joe biden out for 2024. i remainings treatmently concerned that he gets re-electioned. i'm not one of the people who who thinks they're going to sub

sir, can you give us an update on what your client is saying now about the doj and fbi officials interfering in biden family probes including biden bribery allegations, sweetheart deals for hunter biden? we've got multiple house probes. >> thanks for having me, i really appreciate the opportunity to discuss it with you. there really has been enormous outreach from congress. there's three committees now interested in looking into this matter. you've got the house ways and means committee, the house judiciary committee and the house oversight committee. and you have some senate, you have senate interest as well. and so it's really blowing up, and it's important because, you know, my client, gary shapley, supervisor special agent of the irs, he sat for, you know, six or seven hours before the house ways and means committee and answered questions from both house democrats and republicans, can and he was under threats of penalties of false statements,

and he survived. those transcripts are released for everyone to take a looked at. and what that record shows is preferential treatment for the president's son and statements about u.s. attorney weiss who has said that he told agents at that october 7th, 2022, meeting that he would -- he sought special counsel approval from doj and was deny it. so there's a lot of things going on right now, and most recently today the there was a letter from weiss to senators graham and durbin which is now a different version of sort of this ongoing release of, you know, different variations of stories from the u.s. attorney weiss who has not agreed to an interview or testimony in front of congress yet. elizabeth: what disturbing you -- disturbs you and shocks you the most about all of this? >> well, i think what's really concerning is when you have the testimony of 14-year veteran

gary shapley, supervisory special agent, and then you have the line agent who's also a whistleblower, but most specifically gary shapley's testimony about his red line meeting that took place on october 7th, 2022, where they had been counting on the torn general's statement saying -- the attorney general's statement saying they specifically appointed weiss as a trump appointee who had authority to do whatever he needed to do in the case. and the agencies show up, and it's not --ing agents show up. it's not just line agent, you've got high-up executives with the fbi, with the irs, you've got weiss' own first assistant and criminal chief at this meeting at the u.s. attorney's office, and weiss says he tried to take it to the district of columbia, that u.s. attorney who's a biden appointee -- elizabeth: you're talking about wolf? >> yep. well, the ausa in delaware who works directly for weiss, you

know, that's wolf. that's leslie wolf. but u.s. attorney weiss was at that meeting, and u.s. attorney weiss is the one who told everyone that he had tried to take it to d.c., and and it was declined, that he tried to seek special counsel approval, and it was declined. and i'll tell you with, the whistleblowers gary shapley, the line agent, between the two of them they've spent now probably collectively 14 hours testifying in front of the house ways and means committee under rigorous question from both democrats and republicans, be but u.s. attorney weiss has not -- elizabeth: elizabeth so they're not doing anything. that in and of itself is obstruction of justice. senator chuck grassley is sending a letter to david weiss demanding he explain why the doj apparently has no investigation into criminal bribery allegations made against hunter biden and his father joe biden that involved at least 17 audiotapes reportedly. and your client is saying

assistant u.s. attorney general leslie wolf blocked these investigative efforts to question hunter biden's business partner, rob walker, about joe biden saying there was enough probable cause for a search warrant at joe biden's guest house in delaware, but it was blocked due to optics? blocked investigators, tipped off hunter biden's defense counsel about that search? that's what's going on. >> in. >> that's right. the record is replete with examples of where, you know, irs agents, they are the seal team six of money investigates, of following the money, of financial investigations. they're good at what they do. and when they saw leads that went to to go directly to either the president or the president's son or the, you know, offshore connections with the chinese energy company or other things, then they were stopped and they weren't able to pursue those questions or those investigative steps. elizabeth: cover-up. it's obstruction.

censorship. this breaking news earlier today, federal judge terry dowdy is saying to the justice department, no, we're not going to put a stay on the ruling that puts limits on the white house talking with social media about things like censorship. they're going to the fifth circuit for an emergency stay. what do you think of the action here? >> it's unbelievable that the biden administration, after they lost a really important, perhaps the most consequential first amendment case in generations, actually went back to the judge and said, judge, please, let us continue to censor americans. and the judge, of course, said, no. what's been uncovered in this case, liz, has been the ken sorship inter-- censorship enterprise that's bigger has been uncovered. the twitter files certainly amplified it, elon musk buying twitter was an important development in all of this because it's been unmasked. you've got agencies across the board that were working directly with and coercing social media giants to censor americans and

violate their first amendment rights, and that's what this case can represents, getting us back to a place where people can speak freely and openly. elizabeth: now there's fears that facebook's version of the twitter app, it's called threads, it's such a lame name. can we stay on this for a second, senator? because the media's saying, well, you know, this was just the government has a right to fix wrong information about things like covid vaccines having microchips in them. is that what it's about? is it gig -- bigger than that? >> yeah. listen, the government has zero business telling you or i what we can see, hear and believe -- elizabeth: well, how bad did it get? >> i mean, you had the surgeon general of the united states directing, working directly with senior facebook officials to take posts down. you had sis saw, an agency who somehow believe wheres they're in charge of determining what is

misinformation, so this injunction goes to white house officials, the fbi because we know the fbi was involved with sort of undermining the hunter biden laptop story even though they already had the laptop. that was uncovered in this lawsuit. across the board this administration has engaged in a vast censorship enterprise that ought to scare every american who believes one of our fundamental rights is being able to speak our mind. elizabeth: it's wild to the back door into twitter and facebook in order to manipulate the national conversation. and now it feels like the national conversation is getting reset. you know, to what you're saying, a lot of the anger about censorship has to do with shutting down critics of vaccines which now dr. fauci admits does not stop covid, they have serious side effects. let's watch rfk jr. on this. watch this. >> what is the biggest positive thing you think anthony fauci did for the world? what is good that he has done for the world, especially during this pandemic? >> well, i don't want to sit

elizabeth: okay, we've got more chaoses in liberal-run cities and towns. a democrat socialist mayor of south fulton in the met to propoll tan atlanta the, georgia, area charged with first-degree burglary and criminal trespassing. he reportedly broke into someone's home. now l.a. is reinstating its zero cash bail point what are taxpayers paying for? even rapper 50 cent is slamming this. fox news' william la jeunesse in los angeles with the story. >> reporter: well, elizabeth, given his criminal record on guns and drugs, 50 cent comes at this story with a perspective you normally hear from cops and prosecutors. on zero bail, we're talking about those few days after an arrest but before a suspect's first appearance in court. now, in l.a. police no longer have that option that they can hold an accused nonviolent offendererren on a pretrial basis. 50 cent calls that a big

mistake, attaching this segment from fox l.o. to -- l.a. to make his point. >> starting at midnight tonight, the very's department will no longer detain people for theft, shoplifting, drug use, vandalism, battery and a whole host of other non-serious, nonviolent crimes that affect the quality of life of people here in los angeles county. >> reporter: critics complain that zero bail deters enforcement because police know the offender is not going to be held. crime jumped almost 12% in l.a. last year including tens of thousands of burglaries, robberies, stolen cars with many criminals never seeing a courtroom. the judge hearing the case found that cash bail discriminates against the poor. it represents a constitutional violation. but crime crews argue the ruling ignores public safety. >> i just thank 50 cent for speak up because i think we need more of that whether it's through hollywood, whether it's celebrities, whoever it is. we need to speak up and say something. >> reporter: so the real

people will probably come to court to face their charges. no cash bail also tells the victims, you know what? you don't really matter, and it tells the cops your job doesn't really matter. your hard work, your sacrifice doesn't really matter. elizabeth: so what are taxpayers in los angeles paying taxes for? what are cops working for? >> well, i mean, that's a really good question. as a taxpayer, i'm a taxpayer in a very liberal county in arizona, and we find it very frustrating as well because there are just a whole host of crimes that police either don't pond to at all like -- respond to at all like shoplifting and car burglary and things like that, things they're doing in l.a. and other liberal cities around the country. they're not responding, they're just taking an internet report or whatever. and, again, that tells taxpayers, you know what? we're going to take your money, but we're not going to help you not be a crime victim, and we've got to remember that these lower level crimes can lead to more

violent crimes. one of the things we're seeing in seattle, in san francisco, in new york is that we're seeing shoplifting turn into violent crimes. so is car theft, car burglary, those are curving -- turning into carjackings. it's getting more and more dangerous for crime victims, and it doesn't seem that these liberal d.a.s and mayors really care. elizabeth: what do you advise taxpayers to do? >> well, here's what you need to do, you need to vote, first of all. you need to understand what's happening. look at your elections like your county prosecutor, your city council, things like that. you know, or george soros and his organization were able to come in and install over 70 prosecutors around the country who are bringing in these extreme wily liberal -- extremely liberal policies. let's not just pay attention to who's running for president or senate or whatever. pay attention to your city council, your county board and

elizabeth: well, look who's back with us from house homeland security, congressman tony gonzalez. it's good to have you on again, sir. congress bank, trump is saying he'll secure the border again. he's saying biden opened the borders. texas governor abbott deploying major new barriers to stop illegal immigration, big floating buoys in the rio grande river, but aclu and other activist groups want to sue so so to stop it. what do you think of this fight? >> thank you for having me back on, liz are. it is a fight, it is a much-needed fight. we can't allow what's happening along the border to be normal. the governor of texas is doing everything he possibly can to try to the secure the border, and i appreciate that. but this is a federal issue. there's no doubt that biden, joe biden is derelict of duty, and
