>> the the parade balloon story is interesting because on the company's web site, it says they do not get any money from the federal government, and that would certainly change that. and the million dollars to the group in new york, the quote-unquote environmental justice group, they have a budget of about $4.8 million, so they don't need any more of the taxpayers' money. it's typical of the appropriations bills. there's more pressure at the end of the year with a shutdown. there's really only been one time in history that a government shutdown hasn't led to more spending, and that was a deal way back in 1996. elizabeth: sow -- so, yeah, a way back in '99 # 6. a $4 million sewer hine for a city of less than 100 people in the tiny city of pelican, alaska? that's more than 40 grand per person. and then a tiny airport in maine gets $20 the.5 million for their minuscule international airport? this is like the bridges to nowhere fight under george w.

bush. >> well,s the airport has two flights a day by united airlines to knew work, which is their, quote-unquote, international connection, and it's the only open two hours for the first flight and two hours for the second flight. so that is a massive waste of money. people can drive to the nearest airport, it'd be cheaper to buy them all cars, the people that leave there. earmarks, pork come out all the way, and the house, by the way run by republicans, 7.4 billion, and republicans are taking about 70% of those ear earmarks. if they really wanted to cut pending, they would cut the aeromarkings as well, but with -- earmarks as well, but they like bringing home the bacon. elizabeth: don't we have a record level of debt right now? >> i think so. every day it's a record, and yet they are not doing enough to cut spending. again, the house budget committee's trying. they have a bill that would the budget, or a budget, i should say, that would be in balance in

10 years. the senate's already said no. they want to cut 8%. you can cut 0% anywhere and -- 10% anywhere and get done what you need to get done, but here in washington the answer is let's go create a new program instead of solving problems. elizabeth: that's the issue voters are looking at right now. they see it. they see their tax dollars, you know, going out door towards stuff like. weren't earmarks banned by congress in the wake of that infamous bridge to nowhere in alaska? >> they were in fiscal year 2011, and then they brought them back. and the republicans in the house, unfortunately, two-thirds of them voted to bring them back because they don't understand that earmarks are the most corrupt, costly and inequitable practice in the history of congress. money goes mostly to the members of the appropriations committees, leadership like chuck schumer that we've already mentioned x it's an a unfair and really expensive way to do this because members vote for these expensive appropriations bills because they get a few million

dollars for their districts. elizabeth: who's the worst offender? >> well, gen was the former senator richard shelby. we haven't fund out yet this year, but last year he was the the top pork and, of course, he's a republican. from what i've read in the house, the top 60 recipients so far are all republicans, and in one bill alone, 365 members, each of them got 1 earmark. elizabeth: goodness gracious. tom schatz, thanks for joining us. it's good to have you on the show. we'll stay on the story. tomorrow night we've got tom emmer, house judiciary chair jim jordan, art laffer, former economic adviser to president trump, steve moore: a jam-packed show for you, let's send it over to dagen and sean and "the bottom line." dagen: thank you so much, e-mac. ♪ ♪
