elizabeth: well, we've got tonight's fox business gop debate. who's got the policies to reverse bidenomics? who's going to protect america as a beacon of freedom and capitalism? who will prove they should be commander in chief? one thing's for sure, expect fireworks. grady trimble live at the ray garre library in simi valley, california, with more -- reagan library. >> reporter: hey, liz. i can tell you the excitement is growing here at the reagan presidential library, and the venue is a fitting one celebrating one of the most revered conservative leaders in american history. our crews have been working really hard on the ground here to transform the iconic air force one pavilion into a prime time debate venue, and look at it getting ready for tonight, just hours away. rnc chairwoman ronna mcdaniel says the seven gop candidates who will take that stage hoping to be the 47th president of the united states could emulate the

late 40th. >> the last time a republican beat a democrat incumbent president was ronald reagan in 1980, and it was jimmy carter. and i think there's a lot of similarities right now with the world as it is today with joe biden failing the american people and bidenomics and inflation. and it's time for republicans to take back the white house. >> reporter: to that point, the economy will certainly be one of the top issues tonight along with other kitchen table topics like crime, education and, of course, immigration. these three candidates you see on your screen are one, two and three in the podium positions tonight. florida governor ron desantis has been sliding in the polls since the last debate. a month ago in milwaukee it was knives out for vivek ramaswamy, but former u.n. ambassador nikki haley has been surging in the polls after a strong performance there, so she could be the one to watch tonight, but she might also, liz, have a target on her back. the stakes are high, and for

several of these candidates it could be a make or break night as this could be the debate after which, liz, we see this field narrow. we shall see. elizabeth: we shall see. grady trimble, good to see you. joining me now, "the evening edit" all a-star gop if voter panel, let's welcome romm is saw legal from arizona. from iowa, we've got whitney smith mcintosh, a 45-year-old mother of three and 20-year-old ian cruz, he's a student at georgetown university, also a campus reform correspondent. it's great to have you on. thank you so much, you three, for joining us. we are so excited to talk to you. rahm, start with you. what matters most to you tonight? what do you want to hear tonight? >> to be honest, i want to see who can take the lead in second place because i'm, i feel like i'm looking at the jv team here. the individual i'm leaning

towards, mr. trump, isn't there. i think he made a good decision not to join the debate. so i'm looking to see who would take a commanding second lead because in this charged political environment, who knows what's going to happen in the future, and we might have to vote for somebody on the jv team. elizabeth: got it. how about you, whitney? >> hello. thank you for having me. so the main thing that i want to see tonight is i want to see who's going to take control. i want to see who's going to stand out and be in the lead. my main thing is i don't want to hear talking points. i want to hear,s i want to hear details, i want to hear reality. i don't anything that's canned. elizabeth: okay. ian, what do you think? >> i'm looking for a candidate who's going to stand up for policy solutions and bring new ideas to the table. i'm looking for a candidate who's going to stand up for the american people and put us forth, is going to stand up strong and prove they're a

worthy -- they're worthy of taking the oath of office in 2024 25. -- 2025. elizabeth: what issue matters most in. >> two come to mind, one is the size of the government and the other is the disaster that's on our southern border. it's just like an open border. it's like we have no country anymore. elizabeth: whitney, what about you? polls show border security is a top issue for voters heading into 2024. is that a top issue for you? which candidate do you think has the best plan to tackle biden's border crisis? >> is so, actually, my top issue is life, and the second one after that would be border security. i do know that governor desantis has an excellent plan and with him being so close to the border, he has very astute experience with the border. elizabeth: so, ian, we've seen the biden administration continually, continuously push their ideologies, their green agenda and more on the american people.

critics say they're not telling the truth on how that's not working. volkswagen just now cutting electric vehicle production many germany. there's no demand for electric cars in europe, ian. what do you think about the biden white house pushing their bidenomics, their agenda, their ideologies, what their donor base wants on the american people? >> i think it's completely reckless of the biden administration to really shove an ideology on the american people. as a georgetown university student, i see that on my own campus. i see this liberal ideology force on me, and we see it in washington, d.c., the city in which i study. the leadership institute's campus reform has reported that even students at the george washington university feel unsafe in d.c., so you're seeing this reckless bidenomics threaten us and threaten our job processes pecks moving forward. so i think a lot of students and gen-z americans are looking to advance the professional, their professional capabilities now while they're in college to get the connections to advance once they graduate.

elizabeth: is so, rahm and whitney, you heard what ian just said. the former senior counselor to president trump, kellyanne conway, points out that the candidates need to focus on policy, not on trump and not on getting good sound bites. they need to show voters that they're ready to be commander in chief. ing what do you think? >> i totally agree because the last debate that i watched was, it wasn't impressive at all. it seemed like a lot of the candidates were using canned talking points, putting each other down. and a sign of a true leader is somebody that can step away from the crowd and elucidate clear ideas that resonate with people. and so far they're just stepping over each other, it seems to me. elizabeth: yeah. so, whitney, final word to you. what ron just said. so trump has been putting forward policies, right? policies that the american people the polls show like. where do you come down on the new york judge ruling former

president trump and his family business fraudulently inflated the value of properties and assets by billions of dollars? where do you come down on, you know, the 4 indictments and 91 charges against him? >> so this might sound odd, i don't condone any of it. it's just a show. what i want is i want a person to win the primary so that we can get behind that individual and move them forward so that they can win the election. we need to get a republican in office. and all of these indictments and all of this show and this flare that they're throwing up is not worth anything. elizabeth: final word to you, ian. what do you think? >> i think that gen-z americans need to wake with up, watch the debate tonight and really look at the threats posed to our country by the biden administration. i think the other panelists have noted the border security issue and, again, that that's a top issue for me. i'm a texan as well, so i think we we really need to look at candidates who are going to fight for the american people and put us first unlike what the

[laughter] i think it's going to be a great debate, they're going to ask a lot of great questions. the question for me going into this debate and ronald reagan, is he going to be rolling in his grave or not. because you have got a lot of candidates who are distancing themselves from reagan conservativism. and you've got vivek ramaswamy

who's talking about, you know, manning taiwan over to communisr to communist china after 2028. these things are incompatible with the conservative movement and the republican party that ronald reagan built and that's celebrated many that building. so i want to see people hold, people holding to the reagan line and candidates holding, the candidates who won't, to account for that. elizabeth: america, you know -- marc, the american people see disarray, they don't feel safe. they see so much that's hurting, you know, their families with inflation. they don't like the crime in the headlines, the border crisis, and now we've got the senate many in turmoil. what do you think of senator bob menendez and his wife arraigned today on bribery and corruption charges? both pleading not guilty. at least 30 democrat senators saying he should resign but chuck schumer not saying that yet. >> yeah. they're afraid of losing the senate. they've got narrow control over the senate, and they're going into the 2024 elections. the map is heavily tilted towards republicans. so going in in 2024, democrats

are going to be defending 23 seats including 7 seats that donald trump won or biden just bare hi won. and republicans -- barely won. and republicans are defeat -- defending 10 seats and none of them are in biden states. but they were having a hard time defending their ground without new jersey being in play. now new jersey's going to be in play, because if bob menendez stays on the ballot and the republicans put up a strong candidate in new jersey, then all of a sudden new jersey is in contending. i would personally like to see chris christie get off that debate stage in simi valley and declare he's running against bob menendez in new jersey, because there's an election he could win, and there's an election that he could win precisely because of the reasons why he's not taking off in the republican primary which is that he's gone from a trump ally to a trump critic. that would win him votes and swing voters -- elizabeth: that's interesting you say that, because this isn't going away.

reports are coming in the fbi is probing whether egyptian military intelligence did play a role in this alleged bribery scheme. i mean, he was chair of senate foreign relations. menendez helped oversee billions of dollars in u.s. aid to egypt. so this isn't going away, marc. final word. >> no, it isn't going away. and, look, even if there wasn't any quid pro quo, i mean, a senator can't take a concert ticket much less take gold bars, you know? (soft music) will. elizabeth: look who's here, new york post political reporter and columnist jon levine. jon, it's good to see you. what was your reaction when you heard that house oversight, now it says it has two bank wires totaling more than a quarter million bucks from china listing as a beneficiary joe biden's main residence in wilmington, delaware. i mean, jon, this is in july and august 2019. joe biden had just announced he was run running for president. hunter biden was not staying there. his memoir says he was in california at the time. >> liz, this is crazy. this is crazy, crazy stuff.

i mean, let's just hit the pause button for a minute and imagine donald trump jr. receiving a quarter of a million dollars from the russians, lists mar-a-lago as his address. do i even need to finish that sentence? there'd be special counsels, a firing squad at dawn. and yet it's just, you know, official washington, the main stream press treats this as just a big nothing burger, and it's totally unbelievable. and the guy that was wiring the money, the majority of the money was a man named jonathan lee, one of hunter's chinese business partner. joe biden wrote his children college recommendation letters. the families were completely intertwined. and something else about this house, this house, joe biden's primary residence in delaware, he's the same house where they store thed the -- stored the classified documents, the same house where hunter biden was saying -- staying when he was a crack addict and alcohol irk, and the same message where he said i'm sitting here with dad and you better pay me. what is going on here?

when we really need answers. elizabeth: and the other thing too is we're seeing more and more money, the dollar amounts keep going up. now it's at least $24 million flowed from foreign entitieses to the biden family shell companies between 2014 and 2019. some assert it maybe more than -- may be more than double that. watch the president in 2020 at the debate lying to america that his family never got money from china. watch this. >> my son has not made money in terms of this thing about, what are you talking about, china. i have not had -- the only guy that made money from china is this guy. [inaudible conversations] >> everybody's looked at it and said there's nothing there. ask the right questions. >> i can tell you on the wire that hunter biden receive from the chinese national, the beneficiary address listed was joe biden's home address.

at a time where i'm pretty certain hunter biden was not living in the home of joe biden. but if you go back even further than that, this jonathan lee who wired the $260,000 from china to hunter biden's personal account, he is part of the chinese communist party. elizabeth: you know, jon, it's well past time for the national media, the mainstream media, to stop being bullied by joe biden. just because he's yelling doesn't make him right. i mean, why was he denying knowing anything about hunter's overseas deals? what was the money for? what were they selling? i mean, you know, so they earn a quarter million bucks in this cash offload while he was already campaigning to be the president? >> those clips are incredibly revealing, you know? when he does actually get a real question from the press corps, very often from only fox news or "the new york post," he snaps, he gets angry, you see that

mean, nasty biden. and, look, i think your question goes to the heart of everything. it's not a crime to lie in a presidential debate or in washington, d.c. or half of congress would be in jail. but it is the something that demands an explanation. why did joe biden lie about his son making money in china, and why did he lie about himself being involved in his son's overseas business dealings? i don't know the answer yet, but we are going to have to get an answer if he's running for president in 2024. it's going to have to come out. elizabeth: you're going to see white house spokesman ian sands, he's blaming the pandemic. that started in late 2019, didn't hit the u.s. until early 2020 the, for hunter using his father to's address. again, the memoir shows he was living in california at the time. we've got this other news coming in, oversight, house oversight, jon, is saying newly-released government documents and e-mails show delaware assistant u.s. attorney leslie wolf did not allow agents to investigate joe biden, joe biden for foreign

juvenile looters of 1100 -- 100 total. i'm here in harlem. over my shoulder is the target store, one of nine that target is closing by october 21st. and the reason why? well, you guessed it, it's theft. we talked to some of the folks shopping there, and they say they hate to see a store like this close. it's a real anchor of the community, but they've seen these attacks themselves, these thefts themselves, and they're not surprised. here's what the company says. we cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and and, yes, are contributing to unsustainable business performance. the company also closing stores in seattle, san francisco, oakland and portland. and it's not like target hasn't tried to stop it. they've added additional security, they've even put a lot of the goods under lock and key, even goods that aren't very expensive. the news shared in a conference call with target ceo brian

cornell who told investors in the first five months in the year thefts that involve is threats of violence are up 120%. the company lost $219 million its third quarter to theft. and, of course, target is far from being alone. so many retailers complaining about theft, what they call shrinkage. the national retail federation saying in a recent study that as much as $112 billion overall were lost to theft last year. that's up from $99 4 -- 99 4 billion in the previous year. the nrf says the situation is getting even more dire, not better, so a long way to go on this story. elizabeth: thank you, gerri willis. let's welcome to the show former trump economic adviser e steve moore. steve, it's good to see you. so the republican debate's tonight, fox business debate. what can the gop candidates say about the spree looting that is going on? >>s the looting happening, liz? you know where it's happening,

it's happening in cities that are run by democratic mayors. as you probably know, liz, i'm from chicago. the report that you just heard from gerri, that could have also been said of chicago where there are actually so many grocery stores have left that, liz, now the government has to run the grocery stores because there's so few grocery stores left in that area. and the people who are hurt the most, by the way, liz, from both the crime and the departure of all these stores are the low income minorities that still live there. elizabeth: so what can the gop if candidates say about it? >> they should say we have to restore law and order. i mean, for example, in chicago and other cities they're basically getting rid of cash bail, so they're putting the criminals right back on the street. elizabeth: so it just feels lawlessness. the voter doesn't like it. they want it to stop, you know? just get back to normal. i mean, now target's going to close nine stores in four

states. i mean, it cost hem a half a billion bucks this year. cvs is an anchor store, shutting reportedly 900 stores. that's 10% of its base, steve. and walmart also contemplating shutting stores. so this leaves minority communities in the lurch. >> yeah. you know, i just got back from portland, oregon, this weekend, and portland, of course, as you know, is the home of nike. guess what? even in their hometown nike has to shut down their nike stores because of crime. you know what's really sad about this is for the last 10 or 15 years a lot of so-called progressives have said, oh, the problem with our inner cities is that they've become food deserts, and low income people can't find places to buy their food. well, why is that happening? [laughter] because they will not enforce the laws. people can go in and steal the food right off the shelves without any impunity, without any police support. these also happen to be, liz,as you know, the same cities that

the ruth baden ginsberg -- ruth bader ginsburg of the -- abolish the police? you got me. i don't get that, you know? things like that. legalizing shoplifting. elizabeth: what do you think, rikki. >>? >> i mean, i'm completely with carville that the left seems to be taken over by extreme idealogueses who are probably the squeakiest wheels in the tyranny of the minority a little bit, because both of hem seem like what an old school democrat used to be like. but there is this powerful, ultra-politically correct, woke elite that comes out of predominantly higher education and the hoity toity universities who seem to feel they know better than the the average or typical american how he should live and what the country should look like. i think that's the sort of sentiment we're seeing with the education secretary who, obviously, is a federal employee, not able to understand the nuances of local school boards and why people might not want certain books that are

oftentimeses very inappropriate in their libraries. so i think there is that broad overstep and that coastal elitism that makes people feel like they can tell the typical american what to think and believe. elizabeth: so then you've got the director of leadership institute school, it's a parental rights group, slamming the white house as out of touch on education. 22 states they have bias response systems for elementary school children? that's spanning more than # 90 -- 100 school districts. when are republicans going to stand up is and say no? when are they going to say stop, you know, push back against the bullying of the elites here? >> i mean, i think we're starting to see that in this election cycle. i mean, the promise to abolish the department of education actually goes back to 1981 when reagan promised to do so just a year after it was founded in its current form, and now we have four candidates that will be on the debate stage saying that they want to aboll withish the department of education, that --

abolish the department of education, they think education is a local issue up to the states, school boards and not up to federal bureaucrats who often a times make six figures. they have an $80 billion budget, and that money could be used far better on the local level and to better serve the individual localities and families that have the right to have a more democratic say over what goes on in classrooms. elizabeth: so you're saying sort of this calcified bureaucratic teachers union structure and academic structure that doesn't answer to anybody, that lives tax-free, they don't -- the schools, you know, universities and colleges ors they don't have to pay taxes. a big administrative state there. it's time to push back, right, ricks are -- rikkisome. >> absolutely. and i think a lot of this does come out of academia. i was an many nyu student, and we had a buy ons response number on the back of our id cards. a lot of it is tricked down from higher ed that is starting to impact the day-to-day lives of

classified documents, they will try to argue, throw the book at donald trump and essentially he will get off like hillary clinton did with her basement server. >> what abc is saying, d.o.j. prosecutors and agents from special counsel robert hur's office interviewed as many as 100 offices including secretary of state antony blinken, the white house processes, conducted as late as mid september and they've been asked for follow-up interview. do you feel this is a façade? >> that's right, it is a façade to say they dotted all the eyes, crossed all teas and now turn the focus toward trump. this is about combating what trump or republican nominees will say in the general election. they are trying to calm the american people because joe biden should never have had these documents in the first place and if you read the story further, they blame the obama administration. imagine that. >> abc saying documents removed by biden appeared to be a mistake rather than liminal

activity but weren't the classified documents at multiple biden offices? >> that's right, they are trying to say this is the white house talking saying it's a mistake, it doesn't appear to be a criminal act. how come the documents are spread everywhere and we are just finding out about it now? >> the story that came out from house oversight, to bank wires out of china into biden's wilmington, delaware main residence in delaware, to 60000 and 2019 in july and august, classified documents reportedly at that place, hunter biden using that home so everybody in america is supposed to be okay with all of this? is just laying around in his garage next to his corvette? >> that's exactly it. you're getting classified documents at biden's house wires from chinese business folks but
