will you ever, ever accept the democratic nomination to run for president in 2024? under any circumstances at all. that's a yes or no. >> i'm looking forward. i was just in chicago with the dnc -- sean: i want the yes or no answer. >> president biden's inauguration for second term. sean: yes or no? >> it's a hypothetical. no, it's ridiculous. joe biden is our president. sean: calling me ridiculous? i'm going to make you pay for in and out burger. >> sew gidden won the debate and you're right about in and out and that's a great way to end right about in and out. sean: last thing, all the stupid interviews you've done you prefer to do my show? >> i love talking about gas prices and wildlife crossings. sean: that's all the time we have. thank you, governor. we'll continue.
12:01 am
we're in the spin room. it was the second republican debate now in the books. and it was a debate for the ages we'll talk about winners, losers and analysis and maybe who continueso their quest to become president and maybe who drops out, we'll get into that. we begin with grady trimble live at reagan library with highlights. reporter: they covered a lot of drowned, crime, education and the economy, some of the most pointed attacks were aimed at someone who wasn't in the room. >> donald trump is missing in action, he should be on this stage tonight, he owes
12:02 am
it to you, to defend his record. where they added 7.8 trillion to the debt. >> my former running mate donald trump has a plan to consolidate more power in washington, d.c. >> donald, i know you're watching, you can't help yourself, you are not here, because you are afraid of being on stage and defending your record, you are ducking these thens, you keep doing that, we'll call y you, donald duck. >> some landed some didn't, nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy went after each other once again, like in the first debate on ukraine funding and china. nikki haley fended off an attack from senator tim scott. >> every time i hear you, i feel dumber for what you say. >> reality just because putin is not is putin is an
12:03 am
evil dictator dud not mean that ukraine is good, they have banned 11 opposition parties. >> a win for russia is a win for china. >> excuse me. >> you had a chance. >> you will have a chance. >> nikki haley offered a 10 cent gas tax increase in south carolina, talk about someone who has never seen a federal dollar she doesn't like. >> you got bad information. reporter: a most in last 5 minutes where moderators asked everyone on stage, who on that stage they would eliminate to secure a path to beat former president trump. every single one refused to answer that question directly. chris christie chimed in at the end, clarifying the person is former president trump. trace.
12:04 am
>> it was fascinating how dana perino pivoted from that, she said is there the mathematical way that you think you could continue on to beat the former president, grady thank you. let's bring in chief political anchor. bret baier. i thought it was fascinating. we were up watching it. i thought there were certain things that you thought we went into this we thought someone had to really set themselves apartment i'm wondering -- apart, what is your overview. >> the odd audience was different, smaller, more respectful, maybe the shadow of ronald reagan. the candidates were not different. they may have been more super charged than our debate in milwaukee, dana and stuart knew that going in. at one point, governor da
12:05 am
doug burgum said i need to get in here. i think that governor desantis kept his position in the middle because he had a couple of good moments and didn't have you know faults any trips. >> we go to social media and different sites to see how people feel about this, there were different opinions, you talk with 5 different people, you get 5 different responses about who won, who lost. i know you have your three favorite moments of the night, one is with nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy. they had bake and forth over china -- back and forth over china, and nikki haley ended it. you couldn't understand what they were saying for a while, nikki haley ended it with this. >> if you will give us 3 -- >> all you have to do is go watch nikki haley. >> if you give me 3 times
12:06 am
the detection in income tax, then i will look at your gas tax. >> you said yes. >> right. >> secondly on the 50 million. >> a nice -- >> on the -- do your homework tim, obama bought those curtains. >> did you send them back. >> that was the curtains comment at very end. >> actually that was one of mine, at the end, they are going back and forth you can't understand what they are saying, south carolina on south carolina about a gas tax. and in middle of that governor desantis says, this is silly. and i have done a lot in florida and et cetera, he landed the dismount after that argument there were a couple of those moments that is why i say desantis had a good night. >> nikki haley came in and she went after vivek ramaswamy about china. she aid at the end, vivek said i shut my company down in china.
12:07 am
>> she said right before you were running for president. >> i think you know vivek ramaswamy, changed his tune this you know this time. last time he said you are all bought and paid for, this time he said i are all wonderful republicans who might be in my cabinet, they picked up on that. >> it is interesting lastly we talked about chris christie. let's see if we have, chris christie went after the former president, a few times, in this case he ended his with a joke that may not have hit the right notes. >> i want to look at that camera tell you, donald, i know you are watching, you can't help yourself, you are not here tonight, not because of polls, and not because of your indictments, you are not here because you are afraid of being on the stage and defending your record, you are ducking these things, you keep doing
12:08 am
that, no one will call you donald trump any more we will call y, donald duck. >> the pitch, that was effective, the dismount with donald duck not sure. he did it a couple times, he had a couple of different effective moves, the question is how does this field window to three -- winnow, how does it get down to 3 or 4. that is the alternative to former president trump who is up 40 or 50 points. >> it was interesting and grady touched on this they said, you should write on the card who you think should be thrown off the island, they didn't do, that but she asked ron desantis what is your path to victory. >> he said it's not the polls it's the voters. it seems that this is --
12:09 am
field will be winnowed. narrowed the next time we do this vivek ramaswamy sits down next to you. >> each time, poll numbers, stipulations go up and donors numbers go up it gets tougher that is a challenge and the other challenge twhark-- what is the path do i have a path, i will let talk with vivek. >> i will step aside. >> thank you, bret. >> great work all day, thank you. >> thank you very much. >> what is that? >> you can't unplug, i will stick around then. i will chat with you both. >> you can't tear himself away from this. >> okay. >> he has been here for hours, we bring in vivek ramaswamy who took a few shots from other candidates. vivek great to have you on. what did you think of your performance tonight? >> i was happy with how we
12:10 am
did, to be honest first debate i was surprised, you were on stage, main of those candidates came at me, tonight, i'm focused on moving to a different phase of this campaign, i'm not running against people on that stage, there were a lot of personal attacks, i don't take them personally, some ways i am the new guy in this case, i have to earn the trust as the new guy of people across this country, i embrace, that i will surround myself, with people who will challenge me and question me and disagree with me, that is how i successfully built my businesses that is how i will lead and reunite the country. i'm running for this country. and our mission is not just do win h this election, it is to reunite this country, we have on reunite the party, i'm cut out for the job. >> bret and i were talking, nikki haley and you had a back and forth. talking about china and your, in china. you said you closed down.
12:11 am
she said yeah, you shut it down before you ran for president. she got a lot of applause and a lot ofs recon -- resonance on internet. >> it was a false and unfair attack, i was going to retort work she is a among many governors who courted chinese investment in her own state, i have done something very few american ceos have a made a clear pledge to not do business in china when i started my second company, strive, i learned from the first. i talked about those experiences in my book, woke inc, every ceo is beholden to china. i understand that thread. from a reagan's perspective. what did he say, we win they lose. that semiposition with respect to communist party
12:12 am
of china. >> was it the same company as hunter biden got paid the 5 million. >> i think it was ridiculous, i have no idea about -- i have no idea about what that reference was about to be honest, we opened a subsidiary in china, there is a wide range of investment from people in china, same thing as every other company from black rock to apple, but i got the hell out, and i started my next, i made a day one commitment no financial institution has made, i think part of problem with our politics china has infested every part. you could -- look at every gofer mo governorrer in on that stage, has courted and praise chinese investment in their state, we have to be honest american ceos have been expanding into chinese market, we have to learn
12:13 am
from what went wrong there to decouple. >> the subject of education, there was push back, you made a comment on transgender children. >> i have to be clear about this. transgenderism, in kids is a mental health disorder. we have to acknowledge the truth of that for what it is. i met two young women in this campaign -- >> so, the question is a lot of people saying, maybe that is not the best way to approach. this you can say, listen parental rights are key, but saying that is a mental health issue, a lot of people said, i wish he would clarify. >> let's could bring. dsm 5 has classified gender disphoria as a mental health risk. on one hand we say that kids require special care,
12:14 am
americans with disabilities act was interpreted by courts to include transgenderism, that is inconsistent. but i come from a place of compassion when a kid said my gender does not match by biological sex, yes that means they are going through a struggle in their life, we have to have leadership as adults to get to bottom of what it is, what is growing wrong instead of hiding behind a culture of fear to sayuryou are transphobic for asking that question, i reject that, that is not passion that is krcruel teening it will cruelty. >> did you have a different take coming into this debate, you tried to be the nice guy in reagan a library to say, i appreciate my
12:15 am
fellow republicans then last debate, you say the all of you on this stage are bought and paid for, senator scott mentioned that. >> i think, these are good people, tainted by a broken system. i think that system is badly broken. >> you said they could be in your cabinet. >> certainly, people on that stage who are good people, tai tainted by a broken system, i'm going in to fix that system. every politician dances to the oto the d tune of their biggest donor, in my case, my biggest donor is me, this is bipartisan problem, i don't blame the individuals, i believe they have been exploited by their own super pacs, they are good people, i want to be challenged. we have to reunite the party, my goal is in small ways to beginning that
12:16 am
project of reuniting the party, to strengthen. >> you say they were bought and paid for last time, now you are willing to put them in your cabinet. >> we'll make sure they are not bought and paid for by the end, i'll make a commitment from ron desantis, and nikki haley and tim scott can make the same one, any super pac, that supports i say give the money back to your super donors, we need to be better than other side, look at menendez and hunter biden and ge george soros funding half of the prosecutors in this country. ththis will require leadership, that is what i'm bringing to the table, i think it will take aboutsider, someone from next generation to lead to us future. >> vivek thank you. >> bret baier thank you. >> efficient you. appreciate you.
12:17 am
>> bringing in tim scott, i want to play slot senator and we'll bring in the senator from south carolina. >> he said we were all bought and paid for, i thought about, that said, you know, i can't imagine how you could say that knowing that you were just in business with the chinese communist party and the same people that funded hunter biden millions of dollars was a partner of yours. >> that is nonsense. >> that is not nonsense. >> i want to respond, they are good people who are tainted by a broken system, not the fault of anyone who is in politics. >> some of us are not tainted. >> thank you for speaking while i'm interrupting. >> we played back and forth between you and vivek ramaswamy. we were just talking about, bought and paid for and concept of good people on tonight, and last time, what
12:18 am
did you think about that, he said we'll make sure before they enter my cabinet, that all of that going walker. >> just a tad bit hypocritical, you have to have a good time on stage but tell the truth, what me said last time is wrong, the more information that comes out ab about his dealings in china the more surprised we should be. not a surprise he wants to turn taiwan to china. by 2028. >> you started out. everyone, you look at internet, response and crowd was, tim scott brought his energy, he brought his game tonight. you did you came out of gate strong. and then it tailed off, you were in the first 30 minutes you had three questions, maybe 3 1/2, you jumped in there then a while where you were not called on for a while, you made a joke, you can see me here. >> i am really hard to miss on that stage. i'm a biggs boy with a bald
12:19 am
-- big boy with a bald head, i can not understand how moderators three people could not find my side of the stage. and they skip made time and gain. some candidates got 3 questions in that time, i had zero. >> do you feel -- >> frustrating. >> do you feel, we talked with some moderators, it is one of those things that you are not trying to put anyone out, it is the flow, 3 questions to new first 30. >> i would say add it up at the end of the day. what we want it the american people to have a chance to hear what we have to say. about the issues that define our future. and impact their lives today. we had an opportunity to do, that some of the issues but to not get a question on crime or education. i founded the school choice caucus 10 years ago. i'm a guy who -- 4 different elementary schools by the fourth grade.
12:20 am
having a conversation about the power of education and be carved out of that, i am stunned. >> was it your sense it might have stopped your moment up a little bit that you built up in. >> it would be helpful to continue in the c the conversation, i don't think they did it on potential, don't get me wrong, but they have to be mindful of import importance of looking to their right and not just asking the people on their left. >> the question who do you vote off the island. do you see a mathematical way for you to be the contender? >> of course, i would not be on the debate stage if i did not. we have to have an opportunity to tell the american people why this nation can continue to do for them, what it has done for me, if we can continue to show up, talk about
12:21 am
restoring hope, freedom, opportunities and protecting america, that is backing the blue, closingure is south ern border and standing toe to toe with president xi . i believe contrast in style and substance is a winning ticket. >> we talked about this earlier. back and forth with you and nikki haley about the curtains. and there was a lot of comments on that saying, what that was about. i'm not sure that was effective. >> one of the challenges if you talk about spending, you have an opportunity to be a fiscal hawk, be one. she offered increase in taxes. 200 million for south carolinaians. that say problem for someone who stands there and talks about spending issues. in a state as small as south
12:22 am
carolina to increase our gas tax by 10 cents, 200 million that is the wrong direct for our party, i never increased taxes. >> going forward, what do you look at, what is your next benchmark, what do you have to hit for tim scott and his campaign to go forward? do and you have to did well in iowa? do well at next debate? is there something you say, this is the writing on the wall, i need to follow it. >> writing on wall says keep doing what you doing, showing up, having a good time and tell the american people about the greatness of america, we are that city on the hill. >> senator, you are a good man, if thank you, sir. >> we are bringing in doug burgum he is limping in, he tore his achille's tendon in last debate we'll have sound of governor talking about crime and we'll bring him back in. >> we got the most military
12:23 am
and most support of what we're doing in terms of law enforcement. the moral down because we have been defunding the police because they have been attacked in the press, police have become the bad guys, all these job -- why would you be a policeman if people don't respect them. >> last time you are at debate, welcome you to thank you, you had clearly the achille's problem with your leg, you are on a wheeler, a trike you kept h your leg owe had you in studio you fell a little bit better how about tonight. >> fantastic, thanks for asking, made it deeper into season than aaron rodgers, good luck to him, we're on track. and excited to be here. >> a lot of comments governor about your debate, a lot of energy, and you know they say, you know, governor doug burgum has great eng energy, he
12:24 am
was concise, but he doesn't stan a chance. what do you say to those people. >> this is ridiculous to say that. the whole format that was set up, like you have a 1% on -- one pernt person on stage, myself that created more jobs anyone anything on stage, more private sector and then i'm leading in energy state that produces more energy than opec. we talk about energy, i don't get an energy question, we talk about the economy, i don't get the economy border, we talk about the border, i am only sitting governor that has troops there right now, when i was a kid in 1989 in china on way back from setting up our operations in australia, i go to a street market in china there are software is pirates, a buck a disk. we were selling our software
12:25 am
for $5,000, we talked about china and technology and they are asking exph asking someone else where tiktok. we want american public to know that there is a choice up there, you don't have to pick a career politician, you could pick someone who has done it in private sector then the state level where we're getting the job done, you want to talk safe cities move to north dakota, and great education, we have highest s.a.t. scores. >> for doug burgum the governor of north dakota what is the path forward for you to be able to get into the top three or four to move on and compete against the f former president. >> it is clear, we're -- i'm ahead of two people on stage in early state polls. people should be lined up on how you do where you are campaigning. >> what state are you
12:26 am
focusing on. >> iowa, and new hampshire. and if you are focusing on that we would be closer to middle of stage, they are voters that show up and in those states former president, who i vote forward twice, is at 42% on a good day that means p 58% of people are looking for an alternative, the path is wide open and available for someone that can talk about energy, and economy these are the issues. we have other candidates that went to texas and announced their energy plans we're already doing that i north dakota. debate like this should offer voters an opportunity to see what their choices are, i feel they got cheated a little bit, they didn't get a chance to understand there is a great alternative they are looking for, right here, i'm your president, we'll solve those issues. >> i was talking with a
12:27 am
friend of mine who said, governor doug burgum had a lot of energy, stuff i heard that i didn't hear in first debate. did you change your strategy, did you know you had to come in make something showy? >> i big change in strategy, i did not play basketball yesterday. i was not standing on one leg. tthe entire time, and not in extreme pain. we had a great debate first time, we delivered our message, and tonight we feel good about where we were, even though we had to fight to get to discussion. >> governor best of luck to you. >> thank you, trace. >> best of luck with the leg. you are walking a lot better. >> yes. >> thank you. >> we want to bring in -- to j jeff paul, top 3 viral moments. jeff paul is live in the
12:28 am
l.a. newsroom down the road. stuff that is setting the internet ablaze. reporter: trace, hard to pick just 3, there were really heated moments many with vivek ramaswamy and other candidates standing on the stage. seemed since first debate where vivek ramaswamy took aim the most of other republicans in second debate, they fired back. >> these are good people. who are tainted by a broken system. not the fault -- >> some of us are not tainted. >> excuse me. >> they are not. >> every time i hear you, i feel dumber for what you say. >> there is a country that has banned 11 opposition parties. >> a win for russia is a win for china. >> excuse me. excuse me. >> if you -- >> you like china. >> other moments that got react involve the candidates taking shot at former president trump, chris christie and ron desantis
12:29 am
both made a point to call out trump rid lingering him -- linking him to current state of inflation. >> donald trump hides behind the walls of his golf clubs and will not come here to answer questions. >> he should be on stage, he owes it to you to defended his record, what they added debt. >> viewers commenting on all of the candidates at one point broke debate rules. or just not answering the question, trace, at one point moderator dana perino, threatened to cut the mic of that guest on stage, north dakota governor doug burgum, if he didn't stop talking. >> we had the governor oi was going to ask him about that. i forgot, jeff live fors that you l.a.
12:30 am
steve hilton, and erin perini, great to see i, what is your overall take, we spoke with vivek ramaswamy and governor doug burgum and senator tim scott, they have different take aways, what is the big moment for you. >> may be hard to pick a winner, perhaps a winner in different categories. there was one clear loser for me. that is mike pin pence, i can't understand what he is doing in the race, he seemed like a broken deflated man, no one was interested. he needs to get out quickly, and the others, i thought vivek ramaswamy, you had on, he had a strong performance. on the substance, arguments he was making. i think really were the ones that stood out in terps of offering -- terms of offering inspiring positive
12:31 am
vision for future, nikki haley i thought did well in terms of her performance, up until the moment she unleashed that unnecessary vicious insult calling someone else dumb that is not getting her far, i think she h hurt herself with that. ron desantis had an okay night. >> and vivek ramaswamy was talking and nikki haley came out and said every time i listen to you i feel dumber, what were your thoughts? the internet did not love that, a lot responded negatively to that comment. your thoughts. >> i think overall there was a very clear runner -- winner, i believe it was governor ron desantis, you saw a clear focused message, he is talking to republican electorate. he has a record, he talks about record, and he talks about a positive vision. con tcontrast it with
12:32 am
other candidates on the stage, about it is china, and parents, only person who has experience and been able to set a vision forward was ron desantis, that is why he was head and shoulders, you heard him saying stop arguing let's stay focused on things that matter to american people, the economy, and southern border and energy cost, that is what you saw with ron desantis. >> i walked through crowd, i was asking friends of mine and people they trust, and said who do you love, we got a lot of ron desantis a lot of nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy. we got doug burgum. i was surprised. i to play some nikki haley talking about the border. >> our country's education system is in decline it
12:33 am
is focused on denying parent rights. >> or we could play ron desantis. >> like that one. >> sound bite number 2. it is nikki haley runs 23 seconds. if not just let me know we'll move on, nikki haley she is talking about the border. >> first, defund sanctuary cities, you see what shaping in fill -- what is happening in philadelphia it has to stop, put 25 thousand more border patrol and i.c.e. agents on the job, let them do their job, they are not allowed do their job, let's go dpokb go back to remain in mexico policy. >> you go through the candidates, steve hilton, i thought tim scott started well, then he was not asked questions in middle and ron
12:34 am
desantis did what he needed to do to keep moving forward. probably remain the number one candidate right now behind former president, then n nikki haley, a lot of people liked her performance and where she stands. >> i agree. and it since richarding on -- is interesting on questions like the border, there were not a lot of difference between candidates, take your point that ron desantis is point to fact he has done it he made a better job of dim strdemonstrates that tonight then the first. on the actual question of who will deliver any of this, i think that in the end it is not just what they say the policy, what they convey in terms of leadership. and i do think that on that measure, nikki haley started off strongly. but really degenerated, i think that insult really started the drift away from
12:35 am
a strong performance from the beginning, in the end she was scrapping with tim scott, i fell she didn't do hherself any favors by the end of the debate. in the end i are right, central 3, ron desantis, vivek ramaswamy and nikki haley will continue to be the one that those are watching, doug burgum stood out for fresh perspective. >> i wonder, erin. if the former president looks at this and thinks, maybe i should dip my toe into a debate or says there was really no big movement in this -- in these candidates, i'm better off on sidelines. >> i think that governor desantis made this point. no one is entitled to this nomination, you want to be the republican nominee, show up, defend your record. >> he is 35 points ahead. >> but -- >> it is hard for to make a
12:36 am
compelling argument he is 35 points ahead some polls have him further ahead, it is difficult to argue need to come out like being ahead by 38, and you need to do -- we don't need to do anything, they need to do something to catch me. >> donald trump can't help himself. if you continue to tell him, you need to show up and talk to the people, he can't help himself, he will show up. because it all about donald trump, saw in this stage was future of republican party, people who put service over self who want to show up go to 99 county in iowa. and don't do 5, vi events in 7 weeks like donald trump, they do 5 events in 7 hours. like that is ron desantis. when it comes to it you have 14 thousand people committed to caucus for you in iowa, we have 13,000 by august, you are looking at huge numbers that is how you win,
12:37 am
that how you build momentum into super tuesday, donald trump can enjoy being a side show. every republican should take it as slap in face. >> she laid down gauntlet for former president. >> i would not be surprised if he is not in the next debate, i think he enjoys, and will look at this field and tonight thinking, i don't have anything to worry about from these people. >> i think he has a lot to worry. >> i don't think that he would be thinking that. >> steve hilton and erin perrine thank you. >> g.o.p. debate is trending is social media but what are people saying, what was viral? what points hit and didn't, marianne raffety with that part of the story. reporter: throughout debate we kept an eye on google trends monitoring what
12:38 am
americans were searching. and who they were searching about. vivek ramaswamy took off as well as nikki haley. interest in ron desantis dipped but then picked up by the end. with social media trends, vivek ramaswamy trended through much of the debate, and president trump was absence, governor chris christie jab, donald duck pucked up a lot of a-- donald duck that picked up a lot of attention, and senator tim scott went on offense post, tim scott on the attack, i never thought i would see the day and mamayor mary bono saying that doug burgum seems to be most -- on the stage, for those who matter at home. to be honest nobody i impressed me, they all disappointed me, i don't think it was much of a
12:39 am
debate but a series of single question interviews and other said trump one, assall that i saw were children bickering. overall they were turned off by the infighting. >> thank you. >> we bring in criminal defense attorney. i watched debate on third level looking down, i was watching the crowd. bret made a good point, you know, it was fascinating there was not 5,000 people, the crowd of the not as rowdy. i want your thoughts. we'll talk about legalities. whis your thought of debate and the scene and you viewed. >> i was impressed there was a lot of energy on stage to your p point trace, not thousands of people cheering on with mega-phones. i thought all of the
12:40 am
candidates kept the energy up, the bad was way they did it. i did not think that most of the people appreciate that attacks on the other candidates for the position, i thought that energy was good. i felt it was a bit too much neg negativity but sale yient points were made on a global level. >> they couple of big points, they did a lot about china, there was a lot of talk about the economy, because it was on fox business and we are expecting that. they did talk about crime exand education, on crime, ron desantis, number 13 on california crime. >> just being in southern california over last couple days my wife and i have met three people who have been mugged on the street. that would have never happened 10 or 20 years ago. in florida, we back the blue. we support the men and women of law enforcement they are
12:41 am
keeping us safe. >> almost like he is warming up for his debate with gavin newsom. but really, he makes a good point, because right now southern california the crime is an issue, we see it when we talk about this a lot. >> absolutely, as a defense litigate or iner in state and united states i see where rubber hits road, the amount of mental illness that leads to violence is tremendous. what gov desantis did was bring it to a level where everyone can relate to crime. when you talk about muggings that everyone reads about and knows about, it is as common as ron desantis said it r really strikes home. >> you listen to candidates we know for biden
12:42 am
administration crime is an issue. people all over the nation are looking at crime stats in some of the blue cities they are going up and people are kind of really put off by it. economy is another issue that polls are against him. chris christie was talking about his record as a prosecutor new jersey saying he set records in new jersey for prosecuting people. is it a good tactic is that something that resonates with voters? >> you talk about a debate thinking you know we want someone that will back the blue and put consequences on table for those who commit crimes. >> to a point. i think that backing the blue is a fantastic mantra to push out there a lot of voters understand that. they relate to that. in a world now that in a nation where defunding police happened to be soup dejour a couple years ago, now many cities are seeing neg negative effects but they don't appreciation overzealous prosecutor
12:43 am
either on federal side as governor christie was or state side, many times that name calls and i'm the toughest person to lock everyone up alienates a big amount of conservatives who would otherwise be onboard with governor chris christie. >> nikki haley said, that we have to come out and support law enforcement. we have to and exven in the wake of defund police, we have go got away from this, t. >> police departments are trying to get people back but it is tough, every major city is having troubles hiring police officers, getting people even with cash bonus, they don't feel like the politicians in their cities have their backs. this is a problem for the next few years. and i think that this an effective campaign strategy for these people to go after. >> beyond a shadow of a doubt, i think that is what

strikes home with most of the undecided voters, that had an opportunity to listen to this debate. to be a police officer, we have discussed it before, usually a legacy employment position, you have a father, mother, aung or grandfather in law enforcement. that is great for you to do, they did it well, now with the pay that officers get and all negative ramifications from lawsuit, civilly to internal affairs investigations and actual being pout system soim and -- put on social media and yo your career and reputation eliminated. >> first time i heard you use the word squeeze. thank you effect. >> thank you. >> the highlights right, there are highlights and ever debate, and also low lights, senior national
12:45 am
correspondent kevin corke with some of the epic fails is strong but there were things that fell flat. >> you are right about, that good evening. sometimes highlights and low lights are more or less the same. highs and lows are stock and trade of political debates, but some cases lows are so striking they could impose a drag on a candidate moving forward, tonight, notable highs and lows were few and far between. but a few moments garnered attention, like this one. we have talked about. chris christie talking about the man dominating g.o.p. polls former president trump. >> donald, i know you're watching, you can't help yourself, you are not here, not because of polls or our indictments, you are not here because you are afraid of being on this stage and
12:46 am
defending your record, you ducking thing theses, you keep doing that, no one will call you donald trump any more, we'll call you don'tal duck. -- donald duck. >> and former vice president mike pence did his best to light inthe mood with his quip about unions. >> you mentioned president's situation. my wife is not a member of the teacher's union, i have to admit i've been sleeping with a teacher for 38 years, full disclosure. >> aye and former south carolina governor nikki haley joining the firing line, taking that shot at popular up start vivek ramaswamy. >> this is infeueriating, tiktok is one of the most dangerous social media assets that we could --
12:47 am
honestly every time i hear you, i feel a little bit dumber for what you say. >> wow there was that. after the debate, you saw this, if you saw sean hannity coverage, vivek said he is running for the highest office in the land. some did land punches others not so much. >> trace. >> we keep talking about this. you know, the politicians, they have -- sometimes they are great speaker, comedy is all about timing and timing of the politicians seemed to be off tonight. with their jokes, they practice them and sometimes they just fall flat. >> i think that the whole venue affected that probably. >> all right, man. >> i think you are right. >> let's bring in board certified md . scientist dr. hamadi .
12:48 am
i am wondering quickly, what you thought overall of the field, the debate, was it something that you thought moved the needle for some of the candidates? >> a great question, this was an energetic debate, certainty. stood out, governor ron desantis came across at presidential more than the others, he was restrained and confident, and detailed in his answers, i think he came across as a person who could handle the job, vivek ramaswamy was not very forceful but he laid out plans, he is rehearsed but he laid on the the fact he knows what he is talking about and even when defending himself in a measured way it mays renade with people. --s rena resonate with people. >> we have talked about
12:49 am
education system, you made your name in california pointing out covid mandates that needed to be a robust debate. a sound bite from chris christie talking about public schools. >> this public school system is no longer run by the public, it is run by teach teacher's unions, they are taking the worst of their members and defending them rather than advocating for our kids. >> not just new jersey. right. the whole thing is, we know that it is happening in california, and know there are protests in states across the nation about the teachers union having way too much impact on public schools. >> they do because they are funding the politicians look in california, teachers association one of the biggest financiers of state politician to democrat
12:50 am
side. keep in mine, we have to differentiate between dean teachers and their unions, they are working against the interests of the teachers in many cases. when luke at teachers, they are the ones on the ground doing hard work, i think we should differentiate, the parents love the teachers, they are getting paid low salaries working a lot with little respect from anyone and educating our children. we entrust our kids to them, we have to support teachers and show their unions are not beneficials them, and -- benefiting them and get teachers to move away from unions and have politicians come in to guarantee the teachers the benefits and job protections they need without unions stepping in. >> you are right. a fair assessment to say parents do love teachers, but they don't like it some
12:51 am
schools decide they will keep secrets from the parents and activities and things transgender subject. doctor thank you. >> bring in former state department spokesperson morgan ortegus. what did you think of the debate. where you think all of these candidates go from here? >> as a foreign policy professional i was excited we heard more about china tonight, we know that the pentagon estimated that china may try to take a military incursion over taiwan, in 2027, we know that would be in next administration potentially. i think it was important debate, you heard a few one lineliners. and you heard pence dunking on vivek. they are good one liners for tv, but i think what is
12:52 am
different from 2016, the big difference is really only president trump. who was then just a candidate, it was him mostly talking about china, it wasn't in the political discourse the way tonight. i do think that was positive. main thing that was happening, was something that was going on behind the scenes and off stage. about to end and candidates have to file their third quarter filing results for their fundraising, we have about probably a month until the next debate in miami. the rules will be more stringent for candidates. i think reason you saw so much feistiness from people, candidates are fighting for their life. for their candidacy, they only have a few weeks before the fundraising numbers come out, they have a few week toweek to impress
12:53 am
donors, the koch brothers with a large grassroot network said they will make a decision about who they will fund, they want it to be anti-trump candidate, after this fundraising quarter. we'll see that before the next debate. that is what they were fighting for. >> there will be a big change come next debate, morgan you are right. it will be -- it looks like you have got a top three or four, it will be very difficult for some of the candidates morgan ortegus, i want to wrap it up steve hilton and erin perrini . she makes a good point. about two minutes. a good point about the going forward for the candidates because, you know there will be some natural attrition. >> that is why she is right,
12:54 am
reason that candidates drop out, nothing to do with anything but money that is the thing. that means a candidate exits a race, now tim scott i think didn't real get a strong breakthrough, he has a lot of potential money, he could keep going, i think that core three, ron desantis, nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy, they need to convince the donors and the wider party they are the one that should be there to take on donald trump. i think that looking ahead, it will be very interesting to see if in next debate if donald trump is there which one emerges. >> i wonder, without naming names, can you really have 4 or 6? you need one or two strong, only way you will be able to battle former president trump is to have one or two strong candidates, otherwise, you just you divide the pie. >> that is right, i think to
12:55 am
morgan's point you will see more people who won't make debate stage next time they won't have number of donors and polls on be there. that is more opportunity for people to hone it. every time a candidate drops out, the more opportunity you get to hear from people like governor ron desantis about his strategy, that is what is important in in republican primary. >> important we got governor ron desantis name in there one more time. >> that is right. >> thank you, we appreciate your time. there you have it, second debate in the books this one was spectacular. it was at the reagan library, are it is unbelievable, thank you for watching america's late news fox news at night, i'm trace gallagher live from reagantok library we'll see you back h in los angeles tomorroadw night. growing up, every me i'd get out of the shower,
