larry: so, you know, the bidens should stop playing footsy with iran and start enforcing the energy and financial sanctions for heaven's sakes. by the way, best of luck to my friend steve scalise and by the way, everybody, it's time for liz mcdonald. elizabeth: nobody does it better than you, larry. thank you so much. it's breaking news right now.
5:01 pm
israel's iron dome defense is now battling rockets from hamas. just moments ago, israel prime minister netanyahu said "every member of hamas is a dead man". the white house said iran backing hamas because why won't it re-free $6 billion in funds it wants to give iran. it tries to also blame trump for all this? that story coming up and the white house is slamming the far left squad for backing hamas terrorists. ahead now, this breaking news, a michigan democrat just quit the democrat socialist party of america over the fight backing hamas. where are the other democrats on this. plus, ma joyty leader steve cleese, the nominee for house speaker getting to floor votes and ceo judge titan bill cassioppiman's call to get the names of college students supports hamas so they don't hire them.
5:02 pm
i'm elizabeth macdonald, "the evening edit" starts right now. elizabeth: thanks for joining us, we have a jam -packed hour of reporting. foreman cia chief dan hoffmann joins and yous israeli soldier and eyewitness accounts of what's happening right now. let's get to greg palkot on the ground 20 miles north of gaza. what's happening right now, greg? reporter: liz, we're wrapping up day five of massive war between israel and hamas and the groom numbers keep building and the latest figures we're seeing 1200 israelis killed, included in that number as we've been reporting 22 americans, 1100 palestinians too and wounded keep building and big number a
5:03 pm
lot of people are looking at is 150 hostages being held by hamas inside gaza included in that perhaps as many or maybe more than 17 americans. liz, the scale of infiltration by hamas militants into southern israel is not been seen in decades. 5,000 rockets and massive fire fight from the israeli air force, hundreds and hundreds of targets hit and gaza, under fire for sure. not just hamas but the civilians there as well. and the buildup we've been witnessing of tanks and armored vehicles getting ready for incursion possibly in the coming days or weeks we will see. let's get back to the hostage story again. we spoke with an israeli american man who flew back here
5:04 pm
yesterday and described how his father could be held by hamas. he describes first the first word he got, the last word he got from his father. let's listen. >> at y 6:30, he called us and said there's alarms and he's going to shelter and since then, we lost touch. reporter: talking about his father 64-year-old daniel and he went with a friend saturday to fish near his home in southern israel next to the gaza strip. then hamas militants arrived in their deadly rampage and car full of bullet holes, fishing tackle in the trunk and his body not found. >> do you think he is being held hostage? gaza? >> at this point, i hope so. i hope s. reporter: that would be the best alternative? >> that would be the best right now, yeah. reporter: igor flew from new jersey home to comfort his mother. >> my mother can't imagine life. reporter: helping search for beloved and highly regarded father and had little word from
5:05 pm
the israeli government and igor has several words for hamas. >> they should be deleted. every terrorist organization should be erased from the face of the earth. reporter: should be erased from the face of the earth. liz, we asked igor if he could speak to his father now, what would he say? he replied come home, dad. elizabeth: greg, great reporting, stay safe. joining us former cia chief for the middle east dan hoffmann. dan, thank you so much for bringing us your expertise tonight. we have at least 22 americans now dead, 17 missing. we don't know how many are held he is damage. what do we know -- hostage and what do we know about that and the white house helping to evacuate americans out of israel? reporter: well, those are good questions to be asking the white house. i think that the president today just in his recent remarks was emphasizing they don't want to get into too many details about
5:06 pm
what they're doing for fear probably of tipping off the enemy, but when it comes to americans in israel, as far as i'm aware, the least audiotape till a day ago, americans were able to get out on flights. i know flights to israel have been turning around and going the other way but americans have been able to get out. it's those who are trapped in gaza who are taken hostage and that goes for palestinian americans as well stuck in gaza and are in a grave, grave position because hamas is going to use them as human shields. hamas would like nothing more than for those innocent civilians to be killed in gaza. elizabeth: dan, what would you advise the white house to do on that? >> on the hostages? elizabeth: yes. >> well, i think that the key thing is work closely with the israeli partners. their intelligent services are outstanding and they're putting together right now an order of
5:07 pm
battle to go into gaza and mount that very bloody, very difficult urban combat we're going to see there. we just need to be giverring them the information that might need about the hostages, the americans who are there. but make no mistake, it's going to be extraordinarily difficult to get them out. but we're going to rely on our israeli partners to do the best that they can to save as many people as they can. it's going to be extraordinarily challenging for them. elizabeth: biden white house making the case that iran is backing hamas and there's other dis-dent voices inside the administration talk the other way, but more democrat senators including senators john tester and joe mansion say freeze the $6 billion in funds for iran in its hostage swap, but it's not doing that. why the delay? >> that's a real good question to be asking the biden white house. look, there's been a lot of
5:08 pm
discussion about whether iran was directly ordering hamas to mount this attack or not. that's a red herring. hamas wouldn't have had this capability were it not for iran's millions of dollars worth of support and technological support to hamas so they could build those rockets that they've used to target israeli civilians with impunity. look, this is just iran's proxy terrorist group just like lebanese hezbollah and it argues for refreezing the $6 billion. elizabeth: we're now seeing new numbers -- iran has made $80 billion in oil sales. $80 billion under this white house. their foreign reserve currency reserves are growing and under the trump white house, it dropped to 4 billion and crude oil hitting a five year high and pumping 3 billion-barrel as day and invading the line and we want your reaction to this.
5:09 pm
watch this. >> hamas could not have done this without iranian support. iranians are very much involved in this operation, they've been involved in supporting terrorism for decades. the iranians are threatening escalation and killing the hostages, hamas will, and hezbollah will start attacking israel from the north. when that happens, i'm hoping somebody will tell the itolah we'll hold you accountable for the escalation and blow up their source of revenue, destroy the iranian oil refineries and oil capabilities. >> we've not lightened any sanctions and added some 400 sanctions on iran since the beginning of this administration. obviously other nation have to enforce there sanctions and they're under the trump administration. >> hamas not able to function at all by them propping with the
5:10 pm
iranian regime. elizabeth: state department spokesman trying to blame the trump white house for the $6 billion accruing. what do you make of that? >> well, look, iran is using the money they have access to, which is quite a bit of it as you've outlined to fund their proxy terrorists. that's lebanese hezbollah and proxy militant in iraq and the yemen and hamas. it's a fairly simple bit of arithmetic there. they have access to that revenue, that's how they're going to use it and not g goingo use to take care of their own people but going to use it try and foment unrest and proxy militant attacks on enemies, israel being the number one enemy in the region and let's not driving the wedge between the states and saudi arabia and that's why iran and hamas both want a bloody war in gaza so
5:11 pm
they can damage israel's reputation and make it impossible for any sort of reconciliation with saudi arabia. elizabeth: yeah, got that straight. dan hofmann, you're terrific. thanks for joining us the only thing. it's good to see you. let's bring in an israeli american living in tel aviv. danielle, thank you for being with us. you lost family members in the hamas terror attacks. what happened in >> thank you. ye >> thank you. yeah, i woke up saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. and ran to the bomb sheller and from there on it was a few hours of chaos where didn't know where my loved ones were. all my friends and family didn't know where their friends and families were. sorry. i go on instagram and find out that my friend was at that party and we heard from the news that
