"varney & company" picks it up. stuart: good morning, everyone. dramatic developments in us israel and in washington d.c. as we speak, the ground invasion

of gaza appears to be just hours away. israel has gibb a million residents -- given a million residents of north gaza 24 hours to leave. hamas is telling those people not to leave, forcing civilians to stay in the line of fire. defense secretary austin in tel aviv asked if america would fight if a second front was opened from lebanon, he would not answer the question directly. we have late reports of clashes in the west bank between demonstrators and israeli riot police. secretary of state blinken goes to the west banked today. high alert back home after a former leader of hamas called for a day of jihad. in new york with a lot of jewish population, all police officers have been told to report for duty in uniform, no excuses. some parents are keeping their children home from school today. in washington, d.c. chaos among house republicans. steve scalise has withdrawn from the speaker's race. with all that's happening overseas and with a government shutdown looming, house

republicans have shown themselves incapable of governing. on the markets, they're not -- i was going to say it looks like a stalemate, but i see some green right there. we have some positive bank earnings out already. perhaps that's motivating the buyers. maybe balancing out the chaotic developments in congress as well. the dow looks like a gain of over 100 points at the opening bell, up 14 on the s&p, up 18 on the nasdaq. check out interest rates. they've been a problem recently. the yield on the 10-year treasury is at 4.58%, and that yield is down. if the 2-year though, moments ago it was above 5%. it's still above 5, 5.01% on the 2-year. now look at oil, reacting to the mideast developments. it's back to $86 per barrel. gasoline though, that's still falling. overnight it was down 2 cents to an average a gallon -- an average, i should say, of $3.62 a gallon. look at california. lucky people. all the away down to $5.66. that was sarcasm. diesel average as $4.48 a

gallon, that's no change overnight. all right, on the showed today, new york city one disaster after another and now the streets are patrolled by heavily-armed police officers. with the world on fire, the president heads to philadelphia to push bidenomics. a new poll shows the president underwater on every major issue. and wouldn't you know it, it's friday, october 13th, 2023. "varney & company" is about to begin. ♪ ♪ stuart: all right, the latest out of israel right now, massive proprotests breaking out throughout the middle east. thousands of people are protesting from the west bank to yemen. the big news this morning, israel defense forces are warning the 1.1 million residents of north gaza to evacuate with, go south, they're being told. they're got 24 hours to get out. trey yingst is on the ground in the israel with more, and we'll join him in moments.

not actually changed. now, this attack was so big and so dramatic that you're hearing many calls in israel and elsewhere for the complete elimination of hamas. we don't know what the israeli government is planning to do. we're hearing a ground operation which could be incredibly costly is about to start. but we don't know. and the u.s. government is concerned with things like getting u.s. citizens who want to leave out of israel. stuart: but this morning in tel aviv defense secretary austin was asked directly would america's military fight alongside israelis if there's some kind of second front. he would not answer that directly. but it raises an interesting question, doesn't it? with fighting spreading and american forces there, we could easily be involved this some kind of fight -- in some kind of fight, a real battle, and i

wonderwe would retain the support of voters in america. >> well, there's a, look, there's a significant part of certainly the republican coalition that would be divided about this. you've herald the no more wars, no forever wars mottos among several reflips. -- republicans. on the other hand, support for israel is very, very strong in the republican party, among evangelical christians in particular. so i would think that there would be a fair amount of support there. as far as what the defense secretary does, obviously he's not the decision maker. the president of the united states is. and until be, it seems to me, a wise thing for the united states to remain ambiguous about this. you can't have the defense secretary going over there and saying under no circumstances would american troops ever do anything over here. that would be unwise, it seems to me, and it would be just as unwise to commit america to actually any sort of military

action. so remaining ambiguous is something that we've done in all parts of the world, and i think it's a wise thing to do here as a well. stuart: at the same time, we've got chaos among the thousands republicans -- house republicans. what have you got to say to that? this is an embarrassment, byron. >> it is. it is. and, or you know, in january -- which was also an embarrassment for republicans when it took 15 ballots to elect kevin mccarthy speaker, after that embarrassment a prolot of republicans said -- republicans said, wow, let's not do that again. and her doing that again -- stuart: byron, i'm sorry, i've got to break away. i've got news coming in from israel. specifically, i've got trey yingst with us this morning. by the way, israel's defense forces have warned these million are residents of north gaza, evacuate in 24 hours. trey yingst live on the ground in israel. the latest, please, trey. >> reporter: yeah, stuart, good morning. just last hour a long range rocket was fired from the gaza strip toward northern israel,

air raid sirens going off around the third largest city. this does come as we have new reporting for you from inside the gaza strip, a diplomatic source telling fox news and this was confirmed by a second source inside gaza city that hamas is preventing civilians from leaving their homes after they have been given orders to evacuate ahead of an airstrike. they do this in order to prevent civilian casualties, and these sources say hamas is not letting people leave. this is separate from what we have seen over the past few hours following a general evacuation order by israel telling all civilians in northern gaza that they must leave the northern part of the strip and head south. this is a sign that there is an imminent ground invasion on the way with. i do want to show you the scene here, stuart, though. we're at the site of where a rocket fell from the sky. this is rocket shrapnel that we've just seen here. the shredded pieces of metal falling into the communities along the border here just near to the gaza strip.

but off in the distance you're going to sea a big black plume of smoke -- see a big black plume of smoke, and that is a place with where something is on fire following this latest barrage into southern israel. we to know they are firing not only on the south, but now the northern part of israel and the central part as well throughout the day. there was about a lull of 10 hours overnight, but the rocket fire has resumed as have the airstrikes. we have heard some boom withs off in the distance. a very active scene, and the israelis are preparing what is expected to be an eventual ground operation. stuart: trey yingst, thank you very much, indeed. kenny polcari with me this morning. no market impact from what's going on in israel. >> well, there was on monday initially, but now the market is kind of sitting back. as you and i both know, geoyo political events like this don't typically create long-term issues for the market. they cause short-term chaos

which we may see again. stuart: there's another mess, and it's in d.c. we don't have a speaker. it's an embarrassment. >> beyond embarrassing. stuart: there's 40 no market impact that i can see. >> well, look, when the gop has no other choice but then to make a deal with the democrats, if they're going to neuter these 8 gop house members, they're going to do the same thing kevin mccarthy did. he's got to go to the democrats, and then they're going to pay a very high rice for that. stuart: indeed they will. the opening of the market, dow's up about 100. we have positive bank earning, i'm going to call them position. jpmorgan, wells fargo and citi. let's go through them. no, i'll go through them later: that is a positive for the overall market. >> yeah, yeah, absolutely. the banks, every one of them came out so far, every one e heard, blackrock, bank of america -- jpmorgan, wells fargo all beat, right? therefore, yes, it was a positive on the market especially after the day we saw

yesterday. stuart: isn't that something? if the banks are doing well, everybody does well. is that true? >> yeah, yeah. well, jpmorgan made it very clear that higher rates have certainly helped their bottom line, but don't forget he's also the one who's calling for a 7% terminal rate thinking it's going to be inflationary and it's going to be a problem the country's going to have to deal with. while the earns -- earnings are great -- listen, i own jpmorgan, i think jamie dimon's great, but i'm not so sure the chaos is over in the markets. stuart: where do you get your energy? [laughter] >> i had coffee, this's all i had. -- that's all i had. stuart: coming up, the u.s. has sent a team of hostage experts, but how can hostages be rescued when israel's about to launch a huge invasion? nearly three-quarters of voters are unhappy with how things are going in the country today including half of democrats. that looks to me like bad news

speaker. steve scalise dropped out because he couldn't get the votes. some members were locked on jim jordan and no one else. that bothered some republicans. >> somebody said in there, i won't say who, if you allow a 5-year-old to be a tyrant, give them more ice cream, heir going to do more of it, right? >> reporter: jordan would be the next obvious choice, but there is concern he may face the same problem as scalise. jordan could score lots of support behind closed doors but lack the votes to win on the floor. >> i think we will come together behind a candidate, and then we'll move forward for the good of the country. i think that will happen tomorrow. when i decided to run before, i waited until the next day after kevin made his decision, i thought that was appropriate. i will do the same thing right now, i'll wait. >> reporter: the house is now in a state of unprecedented chaos. it's unable to legislate until

lawmakers select a speaker. members are mad, tempers are short. some republicans believe the party is wasting time. >> i think members have got to, got to get it through their heads that they're squandering a majority. the american people deserve better than this. we were elected for a reason. >> reporter: gop members are willing to give jordan some time to wrangle the votes, but the house could move on if he's stuck like scalise. the party could try to resurrect former house speaker kevin mccarthy or even elect a coalition speaker. stuart? stuart: got it. tennessee congressman mark green with me now. congressman, you're all going to be in a meeting in less than an hour, about 10:00 eastern time, i believe, this morning. are you going to coalesce behind jim jordan or not? >> yeah, i'm supporting jim. i endorsed him within hours of his announcement initially. and, you know, i just, i believe he's the guy that can take the

republican vision of america to the -- stuart: can he get 217 votes, congressman? >> you know, i don't know. i'm not whipping for him. he would know that -- stuart: well, do you share feeling of desperation that you really can't be behaving like this as a republican caucus? i mean, this has got to stop. do you feel that? >> i mean, i'm frustrated, obviously, like everybody else, but i think we've got to work it out. we take time to go through our process today and get it done. one of the important things to remember is every person who's in that conference, in fact, every person who's in congress, republicans or democrats, have is 750,000 people who sent hem here. and if you -- them here. and if you look at any one of those individuals and say you don't deserve to be here, they're representing their district. we've got to lead, lead these people together, and that's what we're looking for, somebody who can tie us all together and make us we before me. that's what we've got to have, a leader who can do that. stuart: i just want you to

listen for a moment to what democrat senator john fetterman had to say about the speaker mess. roll that tape, please. >> you all immediate to know that america is not sending their best and brightest do washington d.c. [laughter] [cheers and applause] sometimes, sometimes you literally just can't believe, hike, you know, these people are making the decisions that are, you know, determining the government here. it's actually scary. right now they can't do anything when we don't have a speaker. and this is what i'm talking about. stuart: that's not good, is it? >> no, it's not good. but i find it somewhat comical coming from a guy who sometimes condition can't form a full sentence. is so, you know, i don't think that's very fair from fetterman. stuart: yeah, but do you know how embarrassing it is for me to sit here day after day and announce that you can't get your act together to get a speaker

elected? >> i understand the frustration. i share your frustration -- stuart: one year from now all the members of congress, all the house members, they will be up for re-election. do you think they will have forgotten, voters will just forget this nonsense and vote 'em back in again? i don't see it. >> look, i supported kevin mccarthy, i supported jim jordan. i'd like to get this over with. but, unfortunately, there are members representing their districts who don't want those people. so we're going to find the person that can lead e the entire conference, and then we're going to go and lead the country -- stuart: no the, you're going to get help from the democrats. that's what's going to happen, congressman. and you -- >> no, i don't think we're going to -- stuart: and they will exert an enormous price for their support. >> yeah. if there's a coalition government, stuart, absolutely, we're giving up the reins, and we're not going to do that. we're going to find that who can lead us -- stuart: can you do it today? i mean, come on, come on, can you do it today? >> believe me, i didn't want to

stuart: four minutes to the opening bell. dow's looking good, up about 100 points despite what's going on overseas. mark mahaney with us friday morning. all right, mark, or you are still looking for amazon to go to $190 a share. you're been saying it for some time. make your case again. >> yeah. we've had this pullback in the stock the about 15% for a variety of reasons. but, look, we think -- i continue to think this is a triple-trough year. we're close to a trough multiple, trough margins and trough record growth. we're starting to see a recovery in cloud spend, advertising growth is, remains very robust at amazon. pretty much twice the industry average. for a variety of reasons, we think the retail segment also holds up, and you're going to get this nice margin recovery as they wring out more and more efficiencies from a regionalized

distribution center. when the stocks pull back on a story that you like more fundamentally, that's when you step into the stock. this is what i'm doing. stuart: i've taken your advice before willingly, and i've done okay. next one is uber. [laughter] i own a little bit of uber, and you think it's going to $75 a share. make your case on that, please. >> yeah. so the top, you know, top four picks from us, we shuffle them around, amazon, uber, meta and spotify. uber, i think you're going to get greater profitability. you're going to see free cash flow continue to rise. i think it will continue to do that in part because you've just seen more and more drivers come back. and this is kind of a fixed cost business. so the more volume you get, the greater the profits are to uber. it's it's also the fact that we're beyond kind of peak competition. when's the last time you saw a new ride-sharing company? it's been years. by the way, higher rates make it even harder for disrupters, it makes it easier for incumbents.

i like uber, because i think you're getting a bigger and bigger free cash flow story. stuart: okay. the last one you have for us is meta. you think it's going to $435 a share. that'd be up about $100 from what it is now. again, make your case. >> cheapest high quality tech stock, period. this stock is trading at 16 times earnings, and we've got here about 20-25% sustained earnings growth. look, they figured it out. they got blacked by apple a year and a half ago because of the privacy changes. they used a.i. to reconstruct, you're seeing better reacceleration at meta at facebook than you have with any other ad name. 3% revenue growth q1, 10% conclusive 2, i think you're going to get 20% this quarter. i think the market sees cost discipline, if you keep seeing that and and i think we will, this stock will raise higher. meta's our third pick. stuart: whatever happened to the

metaverse? >> it's still there, stu -- [laughter] stuart: is it? >> i wish it wasn't. i wish it was a lot smaller than it is. so the real question is can you buy meta if you don't believe in the metaverse. think the stock is cheap enough that you can, but if i'm going to get blown up on this call and zuckerberg comes out and says i'm doubling my losses in the met traverse, then to heck with it. i don't think he's going to do that, but that's my concern. stuart: thanks very much, mark. always good to see you. >> thanks, stu. stuart stuart kenny, any comment on hose? >> amazon i own and i love, and i think he's absolutely right. a 100-point gain, just about a third of 1%,3,700 -- 33,700. look just below the big board, can and you see the majority of the dow 30 are in the green and going up this morning. s&p 500 has also opened on the upside. it's not as strong -- yes, it is, .4% on the s&p. and the nasdaq composite, that too has opened higher, up, what, just over a quarter of 1%, 39 points up at 13,6 on the nasdaq. all right, big tech, gotta show 'em every day. apple, microsoft, amazon, alphabet up. meta, despite mark ma a haney's prediction, is down just a fraction. they're only down 85 cents, that's it. all right, let's start with the bank earnings that came out this morning. all looking pretty solid, i've got to say. jpmorgan, profits surged 35% from a year ago. wells fargo benefited from higher interest rates that offset lending activity. citigroup's profit held city,

investment banking fees jumped and brach rock recorded a 13% rise. there was a rebound in the markets, as we know, and a that attracted investors to its funds. kenny, it looks good when banks are doing well. >> absolutely. and, listen, they were expected to be i think the fourth best performing sector out of the broad 11 s&p sectors, and they've certainly gotten off to a bright start. if you read any of those reports or you listened, you made all the points. they're all doing well. jpmorgan cites higher rates helping them, but again, they're a little concerned. what you have to watch out for is the loan loss reserves. reserves, right? what are they allocating to what they expect could be a tougher time. and so i expect them to go up, and we're going to start to see that. stuart: okay. the stocks are up this morning, all of them. nice gains. now, the brits, as in the u.k., has given the green light to microsoft's acquisition of activision blizzard. this is a $69 billion deal

that's been nonconcern in the works for nearly a year. it does not include cloud gaming rights for microsoft, i have no idea what that means, but microsoft is up a buck. activision blizzard, $94 a share. any comment? >> no, no, not at all. i own microsoft as well. i don't know what that means in the deal either, but i like microsoft, and i continue to like them. stuart: we'll find out at some point. dollar general bringing back its former ceo. he stepped down last year. the stock is up 8% on that. however, that stock is down 58% year to date, so now a nice bounce when they bring back the old ceo. anything to say about that one? >> no, i think that's a perfect move, and the market likes it. they appreciate the role that he had, they're going to appreciate the role that he's going to have in the future, and the market is clearly happy with that. stuart: last year kroger announced plans to to buy its rival, the rival grocer, that

is, albertson's. california is going to sue to stop the deal. the attorney general is concerned about higher prices for consumers. nonetheless, both stocks up. my comment? >> listen, higher prices for consumers, you've got to expect we're going to have them anyway, right? so no, not at all. stuart: living in california -- >> yeah, let california do what they want. stuart: interfere with everything. qualcomm, they're cutting 1300 jobs. all of the cuts will be in california. qualcomm has 51,000 employees worldwide. the stock is down. do you remember the late 1990s? >> yeah. stuart: you're too young. in the late 1990s, there were people called = theirs because qual -- >> yeah, yeah. i was in my 30s, by the way, in the 1990s. stuart: a mere child. [laughter] let's go with your tech stocks. i know you've got a few. >> defense sector, right? tept -- textron, it's bumping up

again what has been a long-term resistance line. it's kissed that three or four times in the past couple month, and it appears it's just about to break out. i think if we continue to see the temperature rise around the world, we're going to see the whole group do better. but this and my other one is in the same position, it's kissing the line of resistance and about to break out. stuart: you're talking about -- >> booze allen. -- booze allen. i think the whole sector's going to do well, but these two names in particular are ready to break out. stuart: do these guys, boozal an, do they make misels, components -- >> they do not make missiles, they consult in the defense space and that stuff, right? but textron, they're involved in contracting, not like raytheon or lockheed martin or general dynamics, they actually make

those -- stuart: these days -- [inaudible] >> well, it's all missiles, especially over in the middle east. until it becomes a ground invasion, right? that's how they're dealing with each other. so that's why i think you saw lockheed martin, level three, raytheon all do well starting on monday of this whole week. stuart: indeed, they have. we're going to follow the big board for a moment because we've seen a nice healthy gain from the if opening bell, you're up two-thirds of 1%. the dow's at 33,858. show me the dow winners, please. topping the list, jpmorgan. very strong results that a came out this morning. unitededhealth, up 3%. goldman, american express, travelers all doing well. >> they're expected to do, right? they haven't reported yet, but based on what we've heard, that's now going to be the expectation. stuart: i've got it, expectation. s&p 500, where's the winners in that index? dollar general, progressive,

wells fargo, morgan, halliburton, as you would expect. >> right. stuart: nasdaq winners. do i see any big tech on that risk? -- list? no. siriusxm, airbnb, baker hughes, regeneron. here's a key number, the yield on the 10-year treasury, where is it? that dictates a lot of the markets these days. you're down, 4.62%. of that helps the nasdaq, i suspect. >> yes, it does. it does. but look what happened yesterday we saw when they had that 30-year bond auction yesterday, there was no demand for it, and they had to sell it at low prices, yields up the 30 and the 10. and you expect the long end of the curve to react. as the temperature raises around the world, once again bonds head back up. on -- it presents an opportunity. stuart: 4.61 right now. let's go back to gold because that has been rallying recently. $1922 per ounce, it's up $40, that's 2%.

and they said they would send their planes to america. so we were already booked on this flight, and so we are on our original flight. but as we were about to take off, hamas was firing rockets at ben-gurion airport. the airport was on lockdown. and we were all panicking on the plane. the pilot turned off all the lights inside and outside the plane, took a nontraditional route flying all the way north past haifa to then turn out to avoid the rocket fire. thank god these pilots are trained army fighter pilots, they know how to deal with these situations. but we did not a sigh of relief until we got back home on monday morning. but, or you know, we're still -- do even though we're safe, we're extremely shattered, traumatized. if. stuart: understood. lizzie, thank you very much for being with us this morning. we like to hear your message, we like to hear what happened. and you told it very well. >> thank you for having me. stuart: a new york times columnist is calling out

liberals for justifying hamas' atrocities. look at this op-ed e. the massacre in israel and the need for decent left, in the piece michelle goldberg calls those celebrating the atrocities depraved, anti-imperialists. that's really strong stuff. what do you think, kenny? >> i'm completely disgusted, and i can't even begin to fathom the kind of -- what's even been going on. it's very, very difficult to process that the world has witnessed what we've seen this week. and so where this hatred comes from is beyond me. i didn't -- i'm not jewish, so i wasn't that sensitive to it, but this week has opened my eyes to point where i'm going i can't even understand what some of these colleges and schools are teaching these kids, why they have this issue. hamas is different from palestine. hamas is actually taking the palestinian people and saying, huh-uh, you don't go anywhere, you stay right there, so when the rockets come in, they're going to turn the story around and say look what the jews did.

stuart: it is day 28 of the autoworkers' strike, and uaw president shawn fein has expanded the strike earlier this week to ford's largest plant. grady trimble with me now. are we going to see the strike expand again today, grady? >> reporter: it is quite possible, stu. in less than 10 minute, we're expecting to hear from uaw president shawn fein in a live video, and at two of the last three of these live announcements, he has called to expand the walkouts. since the strike started, the only time fein didn't escalate it was last friday. but then in the middle of this week, the uaw unexpectedly called on 8700 workers at ford's

kentucky truck plant to walk out. that is the auto maker's largest plant in the world both in terms of revenue, $25 billion per year, and in terms of the number of employees who work there. it's where the company makes its super duty trucks as well as the ford expedition and the lincoln navigator suvs. as far as how the negotiations are going, the head of ford's gas-powered vehicle unit says this about the auto maker's late pay and benefits offer: we have reached our limit. we've actually stretched ourselves to get to this point, he says. going further will hurt our ability to investment in the business like we need to invest. the ripple effects of the strike are only going to grow. ford says around 4600 employees at 9 other plants could be laid off. hundreds of suppliers also feed into that kentucky truck plant, so there will likely be layoffs at many of them if the strange drags on.
