neil: here we are in iowa, two things immediately hit me, it is incredibly cold here, the other thing the sense of history, you can feel in the crisp cold air as we speak i remember as a kid watching a guy nobody knew by the name of jimmy carter wind this very state not realizing that he technically placed second to uncommitted but it was good enough to launch the white house career, the last three republican winners in the iowa caucuses never went on to actually win the nomination for the white house, that is the thing about original expectation they don't always pan out that's what makes this caucus date so unpredictable, history has a way of humbling you, many say that iowa could do it again and even if it doesn't it'll keep you

coast" wooden of neil cavuto. neil: welcome from a very chilly iowa i am neil cavuto, the markets are closed and iowa (business but the wildcard is the weather and what can happen, will be talking to nikki haley about that in just a second we caught up with her in a diner but i digress, grady trimble in urbandale iowa with how things are looking there. >> were at the trump campaign headquarters and members of congress are trying to get out the vote in the final push to caucus night tonight and all the volunteers working the phones trying to make sure they have as much support as possible from iowans and they know whether caucus sites are and they show up 30 minutes before caucusing starts at 7:00 o'clock tonight. former president donald trump had a rally here yesterday and

friends" ramaswamy called elon musk a smart guy. >> many of our supporters are first-time caucus goers, people who came from younger generations are may have been libertarian leaning lavan traditionally been pulled in republican caucus. i think a lot of our supporters we don't have lukewarm supporters we have diehard supporters and that will be rewarded tonight as well. >> it's clear several of the candidates are concerned the cold frigid weather will deter caucus goers from turning out especially those that are less passionate about their candidates, back in 2016 during the last competitive gop caucus they set a record for turnout but on that day it was around 4l be tonight. neil: that's a significant difference, thank you very much. again candidates who most of their campaigning which is fine with me i spent half of my time

digits, nobody else does that that's what this was about we don't want another joe biden presidency, 75% said they don't want to trump biden rematch we will not only win we will win with such a mandate that we going get our economy back on track, if you went by double digits that says a lot, will get our economy back on track and her kids read it again and go back to the basics in education, we will secure our border want to know and bring lawn order back but more than anything we will have a strong america that people can be proud of, that is our goal and that's what we will get done. neil: i know you have a busy schedule i talked to quite a few people in this room already who said if it's donald trump, they cannot pull the lever for him if he's the nominee, how do you feel about that in the idea that many of your fans want you or no one. >> that's how we're going to win, they want someone else, if you go all across the state, people are tired.

when he's in the town hall he's same plenty about us he knows that were surging and were the only one going up in the polls everybody else is going down, that says something and we know the momentum we take from iowa is good to go to new hampshire and get stronger in south carolina until we finish this. this will be a two-person race between me and donald trump. we want to make sure joe biden, the hearers don't win and we're going to win by doing this. neil: do you have to win south carolina? >> we were to be strong and iowa, new hampshire and south carolina. were not worried about south carolina were worried about iowa and we will get that done and focus on new hampshire. neil: i notice when you talk to these people and they don't see that you look at their breakfast, you could just take it from them. very good cd. neil: governor nikki haley obviously you don't know who you'll bump into the candidates have crisscrossed the state all night denying counties at least in the state ron desantis and vivek ramaswamy is also crossing the state as we speak right now a lot of times a venue of choice

having winter gear and get people to the caucuses. even more important than ever tonight. neil: is all about the ground game and i understand that, jimmy carter had a potent one in 1976 and barack obama when he surprised everyone when the caucus. you have a ground game but it doesn't necessarily prepare you for getting people derives particularly in rural areas then it's about bringing your fans and supporters, who has them? >> i've only been here a couple of days now but it's a trump supporters, someone who's driving anywhere or working at starbucks hanging out in the hotel lobby they are on the trump camp were telling me how excited trump supporters are to go out and do this. they take it very seriously to be first in the nation and we

would be remiss if we didn't discuss the fact the democrats used to be here, i was onset until 2:00 o'clock in the morning and 2020 it became the end of it were democrats coming here. neil: has not boomed on democrats, the messages we've moved on from you and they lost iowa the last two elections, it's never been close by each election by ten points. i'm wondering if this feeds iowa you are taking us off. >> on the democratic it's different republicans feel about this. a much stronger base in the evencontention you have powerbrokers people like the governor kim reynolds here and folks across the country level to the middle of the country on the republican side to lead the way looking at mike pence from indiana a similar makeup. but going first and doing it right seems to be very important

to them, the rural versus urban divide is huge in the ground game versus the donor game that nikki haley has i was talking to the reporter and she said she's all over the airwaves but is she knocking on the doors and making sure she can get to your jim or whatever you're supposed to go at 7:00 o'clock to caucus and that'll be the real question. neil: you and i were talking about this the notion going to diners and outside, i'm going no matter the conditions, i'm going i don't know if i'll be so eager to push my mom and dad to go were those that live in the rural areas where the wind chills, the roads are still impassable and they don't want to subject people to that. i'm just wondering how that falls out. >> i think the other part to remember when we go to the campaign events were talking to the people who are the most passionate they'd come out of their homes to see the candidates they're not the only

folks in the caucus, there's a lot of people at home, watch the debate and campaign add and never see a candidate person but plan to caucus, may they be among the population like tonight thinks twice about. neil: ready to get back the strategy donald trump has not campaigned as much he hasn't had to his poll numbers are strong but yesterday he was ripping governor kim reynolds, it doesn't seem a productive strategy but again he's doing quite well we will talk to the governor she's a big supporter ron desantis and helping him a lot. i'm just wondering how that plays out. >> like so many other things former president trump has defined conventional wisdom from that supplied in iowa. he mentioned the 99 county thing that's very popular among iowa republican senator chuck grassley does not now governor

reynolds doesn't. now candidates like governor desantis and vivek ramaswamy have done it. that normally is a good method of getting out to i will republicans but donald trump is unique candidate he did it when here but a close second) shooting in and doing airport rally events and leaving and is done a little more i would not call the retail politicking but smaller events and more events but nothing like governor desantis and here we are around 50%. neil: let me ask you one of things that struck me interesting, the attack on vivek ramaswamy or donald trump and i'm thinking there's no more loyal political soldier to him then ramaswamy in this whole process and i was trying to understand is this about trying to patent his lead, shake off late growing resistance, how did you see it?

>> you know the emoji that has the heart and the eyes when donald trump saw the register pull he was at 48 and he could be the first person across the 50% threshold, he looked around and he said where are the two or three points coming from and are coming from vivek ramaswamy the guy who led a campaign where he runs a trump at. neil: trump studies not maga material. >> that's my point, this was a low hanging fruit because people who are haley people or desantis people that is baked and by noon today, for going after going for the people who they have been following but vivek ramaswamy's face who could be persuaded and you have to look at the second choice, nikki haley is in a column on her own and desantis and vic show voters for trump

say them to come out for you but if it's donald trump and get a vote for you in the general election, that number you brought it up with governor haley, 43% of her supporters will vote for joe biden in the general election if it's trump the abiding again which is expectation, that is a huge day in the republican turnout vote and i imagine those numbers will be similar as you head to new hampshire where i know the governor is a huge supporter of hers but looks like he's freaking out about the question, he said this week and for the first time i will vote for trump if it's not haley. neil: thank you very much, aaron i want to thank you as well we told you about governor kim reynolds she is a rock star listening to some of the things is donald trump, she is here to respond to some of the latest attacks and how the candidate is doing or expected to do. stay with us. >> what about the cold.

neil: by now you've heard is all about the boat. i am neil cavuto were in a very frigid iowa i am told the real field conditions for voting will be minus 35. when were talking minus anything you are in a whole another planetary system my next guest is used to that kim reynolds is the governor of the state in a very popular governor and she is traversing a big believer in the whole 99 county thing and across the state. governor your choice ron desantis is on the same of vivek ramaswamy has done the same with not seen nikki haley do it and would not seen donald trump do it how much of a difference does that make. >> it does matter i went appreciate hard work and appreciate someone who's willing to come to them to talk about their vision for this country into take the questions and

really lay out where they stand on policies that are important to them, there is a reason that senator grassley does that every year. >> every senate campaign. neil: do they remember the ones that don't? >> yes they will because they appreciate that somebody has done that. again ron made the commitment to do that and he followed through with any put in the hard work and i think that's reflective of the president that he will be, somebody willing to go the extra mile in every corner of the state, they get a little sensitive on the corners like were part of iowa don't forget us, they do know it is impo important. neil: were you surprised that donald trump mentioned you again on your support for ron desantis that he essentially made you governor and resented the fact that you challenge it read i think at the gist of it. >> it's not about president trump it's about who can step in

on day one and really has the skill and the resolve to turn this country around into reverse the madness and chaos that we've seen. neil: were you surprised the way he made it sound like you owe him and he said the same about ron desantis. >> he's going to say what is going to say i'm not focused on the and focused on 70 has a record of accomplishments that the true conservative that can serve for eight years, i think that's really important, consistency and stability. when you look at the shape of the country is in we need somebody that could go in there that understands the bureaucracy that can fight to get back on track, do what he needs to do, follow through what he said he would do, ron follow through with 100% of his promises and use the second four years to take this country to the next level and that is a different time we need somebody that can do that that is one of the things that i appreciate about ron. i got to know him and covid we were kind of on an island and

immense pressure from all areas even from the administration. neil: the trump administration at the time, they sheltered and and keep the kids out of school, dr. fauci had a different report card should be telling us to shut down her business and restaurants in our bars and to mask up and get the kids out of school and to bring people together and look at the data, the science and take decisions based on your state, we all started, we didn't know so we sheltered and for a little bit but i really appreciated his resolve to do the right thing for the people that he served and then to look at his record of cutting taxes and keeping spending in check and reducing debt. neil: it's still early, there are some polls have him trailing nikki haley, i have no idea where it ends up, if you were to finish third a lot of people tell you it is over. >> the enthusiasm is with him if you look at the last i will pull his was 62% of people that are most definitely going to show

view. >> you hot as governor desantis but i made it clear i will i'm a republican all the candidates running are good to be better than what we have. >> after all the stuff he said about you. >> yes we have to win we are resilient this country is in trouble. >> i talked to a lot of people at the governor that said it's not worth it to go to trump. people -- when you look at the direction of the country, i believe it's going to be ron. neil: if it were trump invited you the governor of iowa. >> i am on record saying that in consistently saying that. i'm a republican and we need to make sure that we don't reelect president biden for another four years, we are resilient and we can come back after four and get this country back on track but i'm not sure what happens with another four years under this administration in the open border in the economy. were doing well in iowa against a lot of challenges from this administration.

snow. a week ago we had blizzard conditions, that's problematic, the cold i don't want to make light of it but folks are somewhat used to this, a lot of farmers went out and did sure. neil: you're right about that. they went to work and people need to be smart, the ground game comes into effect how many times do we talk about a candidate team or approach are they going to get their voters out, you could really test the ground game today. neil: you stand out, you have endorsed anyone, you stayed out of this and i wonder why. >> i decided early on that we were going to the secretary of agriculture for the state of iowa bag issues are incredibly important, frankly food security, energy security international security, let's elevate those issues, the issues farmers and people that live in rural iowa talking about, that's what we focused on could we meet with candidates, can we push those issues. neil: does one more than another address those issues.

>> i think multiple iowans reward people who are sincere and put the time and. neil: you personally attacked desantis and nikki haley and i kind of like her position. >> i knew you're going to try to do that, we had multiple candidates who talked about other issues and talk about energy issues and talked about trade and what that means, to me that is good and is exactly what i wanted to happen the candidates would be serious about that and iowans would want to hear those. neil: it wasn't based on the way the donald trump was responded to governor kim reynolds supporting ron desantis, he had some choice things to say about it you just didn't want to get into that? >> like i said i decided early on this is what we were going to do. >> so your switzerland for the typing with the same snow and cold, their ego, that all changes. i hear routinely from folks, everybody running and the republican side of this is better than what we got in washington, d.c., joe biden and

it will be about let's move on will make it a nominee, let's go and let's win. neil: the importance of getting out the vote, i talked to so many people, i repeated this with other state officials and yourself. they are eager to do it themselves, but they don't want their mom or dad and they don't want to know the relative and especially in the rural areas they want to risk it, what do you think of that. >> this is where it pays to say let's give you a ride, let's get some cars going, those of the types of things that have to happen. again iowans it's been said many times, we are a hardy bunch, you don't want people doing things that are dangerous and certainly the most rural iowans could still be struggling with road closures today but i think folks will get out. we will not set a record unfortunately but better to have this then snow blowing actively. neil: you never know, that's what we ran into, bad hair day right away.
