nasdaq is up 0.74%, s&p is up to 0.82%. dow winners, give me that list, topic it is 3 am, home depot, caterpillar all moving up big time. how about the 10 year treasury yield, 420, yield is coming down a little bit. price of oil coming down $77 a barrel. bitcoin going up, the conference starts, $68,000 a coin as of now. latest read on consumer sentiment. what is the number? >> the number is 66.4 which is a slight revision higher from 66 in the preliminary reading. that number was the lowest since last november. people worried about higher prices and economic uncertainty with the latest number quelling those fears, seeming to be

taming inflation, not a huge impact on the market but there you have it. stuart: not much of an impact. it is a minor response. now this. it was the perfect setting for kamala harris. the national convention of the american federation for teachers, what better place to jumpstart her campaign? it is led by randi weingarten, who calls donald trump a fascist. 99% of the union's political donations go to democrats. her speech did not disappoint the teachers. they loved what she had to say. how convenient she had nothing to say about the problems the unions created, nothing about school closures that went on too long during the pandemic. harris played a role in that, she call for stringent safety measures before the schools

could be reopened. many stage shut. academic performance pledge omitted. the teachers union has been fighting voucher programs for decades. harris played a role in that as well. senator harris supported the los angeles teachers strike which stopped the expansion of charter schools in that city. pandemic school closures, week academic performance, school choice, these are the issues parents wrestle with every day. paris didn't want to talk about it and the union didn't want to hear about it. they are sailing against the wind, charter schools expanding, private education, that's the future. harris is with the teachers union, stuck in the past. second hour of varney just getting started. todd pyro with me this morning.

kamala happening sunday. it started if you ask people on sunday you wouldn't have said wait and see what happens by friday. there's a nice honeymoon now, many of us didn't expect this. it will be interesting to see what happens going forward, will the endorsements maintain the same thing in november they are this week in july. stuart: honeymoons don't last forever. a reporter at cnn says kamala harris is trailing biden's 2020 numbers. what is she saying about it? ashley: the network says data shows harris has made some ground with black and hispanic voters in surveys taken after president biden dropped out but behind biden's polling numbers from the 2020 election. cnn says harris is doing 8 points better than president biden, 78%, numbers show 2020

biden received 87% from black voters. he behind there. according to the most recent polling average of surveys trump leads harris by 1.7% in a national head to head matchup. by comparison, trump held a 3.1% over biden in the national head to head matchup before the president ended his reelection bid. she's doing in some areas. stuart: thanks very much. back to the markets, dow industrials up 570, nasdaq had been higher but up 100 points. david barneson, good to see you again. the market is not traded on geopolitics. what is it trading on? >> it's been an interesting month because there's been plenty of geopolitical news, domestic politics.

when all is said and done the nasdaq down 8% because of biden leaving the race or the assassination attempt on trump or all these dramatic political events or is occam's razor, the supposed explanation, those things were so expensive, that is why they have come down. many parts of the market have clearly not, a huge rally in doubt type stocks as the nasdaq is down quite a bit. it's a rotation, not a risk off situation. nothing to do with that, you are dismissing that. >> proof of it is in the bond market, the commodity market which hasn't moved at all and the dollar hasn't moved. why would currency and bond and commodities stay out of it if it were politics. that's my theory. stuart: you've got your dividend pics with you today. you've gone with this before.

off of some of the other big companies. >> johnson and johnson spun off consumer staples business. 1/3 of j and j's consumer staples, everyone knows tylenol, baby shampoo, these products. it has not gotten a lot of love in the market since they started trading their stock, we think it is a fantastic value and i owe it to viewers of varney to mention it. stuart: what does it yield? >> 4.5%. you got a nice juicy yield from a company that's growing earnings, consumer staples space has been out-of-favor. that appears to me to be changing right now. stuart: another one you recommended, simon property group, spg.

>> they owned it for a long time, this company is blowing us away, getting higher rent collapse, very low vacancy, one of the dumbest narratives in the history of financial discussion. repurpose thing has gone on as far as restaurants and more experienced things. they are paying a 5% yield, there is some appreciation that you love. stuart: some appreciation pass a bill money. major service disruptions in paris at the high-speed rail trains targeted by several coordinated attacks, hours before the olympics's open ceremony. we have details on that.

democrats and republicans have condemned to protesters burning american flags and supporting hamas. aishah hasnie is on capitol hill. where does each side stand on this? >> there' s always going to be different opinions when it comes to these two sides, talking to so many lawmakers on capitol hill and they did not like what they saw happen in the nation's capital this week. there are differing in terms of where it starts and ends. at union station in washington dc, the facing federal property, assaulting the police officers, democrats tell me they did not like what they saw, defending free speech here.

up -- there needs to be something negotiated out here. we are nowhere close to negotiations with a deal right now but what ukraine is trying to do is set the stage, the framework for it. let me tell you something else. they probably have some concerns. if there's a transition in government from the biden administration to the trump administration it is not clear to the ukrainians where the trump administration would be on funding the effort to provide weapons and ammunition to them. that may be another issue in the background as well. stuart: stay there for a second. i want to give a report on what's going on in france, france has been hit by coordinated attacks hours before the opening of the olympic games. tell me more. ashley: absolute mess.

france's high-speed rail network hit by coordinated arson attacks leading to major disruptions to the country's biggest radial lines. they've been affected with cancellations and delays and it comes as the olympic games are getting underway, french holidaymakers are preparing to leave on vacation on the busiest weekend to of all. the coordinated attacks left thousands of passengers stranded at rail lines across the country. no one has blamed responsibility which will take days to repair and some athletes may not be able to make the opening ceremony. soccer matches were played in cities across france including as late as thursday night but with many trains canceled it will be difficult for them to get back to paris for the olympic ceremony. what a mess.

stuart: general jack keane, you are a military guy. what do you make of what is going on in france? >> it will be interesting to see normally radicalized groups taking action like this, claim some credit for it. likely we will see that happening unless it is not one of these radicalized groups. they are sending a message in terms of disrupting the flow of people wanting to participate in the olympic games. it should be a warning to the world writ large, major events that are coming with the world cup coming here about the challenges we are all going to be faced with the security situation that has worsened. stuart: we have an open border and known terrorists coming across the open border and an election in 100 days.

excited. you had a big dip two days ago, people are really excited. a 2% pullback, there's a lot about the fed thinking about getting serious about cutting in september providing some excitement for the market. stuart: 3m is doing well. taylor: i wanted to to say there are serious movies in the dow. the industrial giant we talked about, post-it notes, the maker of scotch, they see increasing demand and pass on a lot of those costs. they cut their workforce so making a big change and the markets are happy. stuart: 17%, united health doing well too.

taylor: about 175 points in the dow gains are coming get from united health and 3m. for every one dollar move the translates to a 7 swing in the dow, those stocks are making these gains. unitedhealth pushing it all higher. stuart: bristol-myers squibb. >> good second-quarter earnings and raising full-year guidance which is one of their top-selling drugs helps with stroke and blood costs, up 7%. looking at the biggest gains we've seen since november 2020. taylor: on track for one of the best days ever. that's why you see everything rally today, looking at a 6-month high in this stock, lost fewer than expected subscribers.

the bar was low, they managed to beat it. one analyst said there is upside in every line item that matters. stuart: democrats want harris to push biden's tax agenda, what are republicans saying about that? >> taxes could go up if vice president kamala harris wins in november. if she doesn't do anything to stop the trump tax cuts and jobs act from inspiring, it will end at the end of next year, taxes would go up for everybody, even those making $400,000 a year breaking a promise the president biden made and harris joined in on, what could be in store under a possible harris administration is not just back to the status quo free trump tax cuts. taxes could go up. harris has not unveiled her tax plan but her ideas about her

2020 campaign give us a sneak peek what that might look like, harris wanted to raise the corporate tax rate, a 14% jump and pledged to tax transactions to fund her medicare for all plan and proposed a carbon pollution fee to pay for her $10 trillion climate plan. we don't know if these proposals will make it into her tax plan but she was on the trail yesterday making it clear corporate tax breaks are off the table. >> donald trump and his extreme allies want to take our nation back to failed trickle-down economic policies, back to unionbusting. back to tax breaks for billionaires.

today, benjamin netanyahu will meet with trump, mike lawler from new york joined me now. is harris distancing herself from israel? >> obviously she talked about the plight in gaza and what's remarkable about that is the plight in gaza created by hamas, they've been the governing body for 16 years. they violated 8 cease-fires with israel, they were the cause of the terrorist attack on october 7th and i think kamala harris is trying to have it both ways because the democratic party needing the votes in michigan. you saw this past week with benjamin netanyahu in washington the pro-hamas wing of the democratic party protesting outside union station tearing us flag, burning it, raising the palestinian flag, holding hamas

flags, while she condemned it, she certainly didn't say she wouldn't seek these votes, she needs their votes and that is why you are seeing her try to both sides this situation in gaza. there is not a both sides. there is not a moral equivalency, this is good versus evil, hamas is a terrorist organization, they use their own people as human shields. that's why there's a fighting gaza right now. stuart: domestic politics very much involved in this. park police in dc say they were badly understaffed and were assaulted by thousands of pro-hamas protesters. you saba protests. what do you think should be done with the flag burners? >> those that assaulted the police officers should be arrested and prosecuted. obviously flagburning is disgraceful, it is disgusting, i do think congress should evaluate that.

those that were engaged in protests and did listen to law enforcement it is their right to protest but those that actually engaged in violence, those that were assaulting police officers should be arrested and prosecuted. it's washington dc and so that, a role in the charges just as we saw alvin bragg drop charges against the violent protesters in new york city that were engaged in the anti-semitic protests on college campuses. i'm sure these dc prosecutors will not apply the law to the fullest extent. stuart: thanks for joining us. todd pyro, what would you do? what should happen?

>> it is called follow the law. you have a right to burn a flag, you don't have a right to burn somebody else's flag, if they want you burning the american flag, it is their right but they can buy their own flag and burned that. if they burn somebody else's flag, prosecutes them to the fullest extent of the law, it is a back way of getting that. stuart: are the democrats giving political backing to the pro-hamas folks in the street? >> of course. you have a jewish senate leader in chuck schumer not coming out forcefully enough and creating an environment where those people would feel shame. if you have the jewish members of congress not backing enough of israel and not backing their own people what message does that send? it is open season on america so you have iran backing these protests. if they stood up for their religion and not their party.

public, every person in america thinks he is stepping down because of his health. he has passed the point he can waive it away. i would not go to the parkinson thing. he keeps saying it is not parkinson's disease. i believe that. there are many other rings it can be. stuart: a new study, debunked recent claims that moderate drinking leads to a longer healthier life. that's not true. there is no completely safe level of drinking. you wouldn't go that far, would you? >> i wouldn't go that far. this is a study out of canada that looked at 102 other studies that decided previously they hadn't looked deeply enough that there was a slight advantage. there's not a slight advantage and there's an increased risk of breast cancer associated with drinking and throat cancer
