consequences go back to 1912, woodward wilson elected president and the majority in the house of congress in the next year 1913 the federal reserve and personal income, ironically wilson was long opposed to the central and bank and are you kidding me it's a system run by private bankers, why would they surrender the money trust. every democrat on the senate conference committee voted for the federal reserve only four republicans did i'm not sure what swayed wilson but we know the creature from jekyll island was born with much fanfare and a whole lot of promise they would smooth out the business cycles number boom and bust they would correct the problem in elasticity with currency is more elastic now than gumby. it never lived up to the hype, taxes, forget about it they are absolutely crushing us to items that were dealing with today from 1913, elections have consequences. >> did you say gumby. >> he can walk into an any book

with his phony pal. liz: half of our audiences like what is she talking about, thank you very much we are at the start of arguably the most important week in four years for the market, wednesday the federal reserve is expected to do for the first time what it has not done in four years lower interest rates ahead the dow is all jacked up right out of the gate look at the intraday chart they propelled the blue chips of 340 points to an intraday record of 41733 the dow needs to be up 169 points for the record to stick, we are there, we have it up by 238 points, for the rest of the markets a mixed picture in the s&p in the green by five points don't think if it goes negative that's a problem, the s&p is less than 1% from record

territory the nasdaq has not been in the green at all it's down 96 points but off the low of the session, russell 2000 of nearly eight points if there's an individual stock problem you can point to apple is the worst performer on the dow, it's down by 2.8% followed by amazon and boeing and unitedhealth group the chp infrastructure arm is the worst performer on the nasdaq 100, analyst are scrutinizing shipping times ahead of friday with the new suite of iphones the iphone 16 arriving customers hands they seem weaker than expected demand, if that is the case why are at&t, verizon and t-mobile all hitting multiyear highs, at&t the leader up to and three quarters% on track to close at a three year hi, reuters reports it is an early-stage talks to merge the directv satellite service of which you own 70%

with echostar's dish look who is here to ask and we can ask about all of it at&t ceo john joints becoming up in just a few minutes you cannot miss that. in the meantime the number one question for the overall market, what will the fed do on wednesday, 100% odds jerome powell and company will cut interest rates for the first time since 2020 but by how much a more conservative 25 basis points or more in a fascinating turn of the temperature gauge on these things if your complete geek like us, the very fresh data right now show the probability of a larger 50 basis point shock, it is increased from a measly 13% last wednesday 239%, 61%, 61% for 50 basis points but the two day meeting kicking off tomorrow, the implications for the market are
3:04 pm
enormous so we said let's bring in somebody it manages an enormous amount of money federated hermes steve, the market as a backdrop, what do you think the fed should do and what do you think it will do, two different things. >> indefinitely should do 50 there behind the curve just like behind the curve and 21 on the other direction, they tend to get backward looking unfortunately, pretty academically oriented, we are becoming concerned, the economy is clearly softening up the unemployment rate is raised 5.4%, the inflation numbers are close to what i believe in formal target which is to it half percent, everything is inverting from where all the drivers of the great bull market and tech stocks are now inverting for investors their shipping under our feet and likely to come on wednesday, i hope they do 50, they're going
3:05 pm
to need to do a lot more, there behind the curb were expecting the cycle to get us down to two and a half or 3% on the short-term money market rate and the tenure is where it's going to end up somewhere around three and a half, there should be real action on the short end that is re-inverting the guild curve in a big driver of the bull market and tech stocks, we are much focus on validity and the near-term we took money off the table in early july and were plain for big rotation into small caps encyclicals in a defensive value, that has been working so far and we think it continues to work in this environment. liz: it continues to work but what does that say for our viewers portfolio which have a bunch of the mag seven names that are still in their, can we were looking at some of the
3:06 pm
stats since the s&p record back in july 16, the mag seven down five-point to percent, can we continue to see in extension of the bull market, the multiyear bull market if big names like nvidia and microsoft don't come along for the ride. >> you can it is just math, we are not expecting the stocks to be down 30% or something scary the fundamental long-term are quite good everybody knows that, et cetera, et cetera they got ahead of themselves but if they drop another 10% from here you have 30 plus% of the market drop, the other side of the market which is not at all time highs and not even near it some of these are very cheap, the other 60 or 70% of stocks can go up 20 or 30% in the market can grind a little bit higher which is where we are we think were in a grinding action in the
3:07 pm
rotation. as long as people are diversified and you gotta get money on the other side of the market that would be my advice we are not expecting a crash, unfortunately. liz: to do and if you look at the data, today we have a very fresh piece of data the september empire index report and manufacturing read for the new york entire state and it was a surprise to the upside, 11.5, the estimate was down 4.8 that is a good sign if you look at that plus a slowing for cooling labor market you're still in the soft landing camp and no recession even though the tenure in the two-year have on inverted in the tenure is higher than the two-year in that indicates that suddenly we're going to have a recession? >> we call it a rocky landing, that empire may be pretty
3:08 pm
volatile in the manufacturing sector has been on some measures of recession for 18 months, that's good that they finally got a decent number out today but the last several have been weak at empire manufacturing, manufacturing is soft for sure and that's one reason why we think the fed has got to get going with the rate cuts we think they will and we hope that they do 50 and on wednesday i would not be shocked if they only do 25 but they're going to do more over the next 18 months for sure. it's good to see you, thank you very much, you gotta set the dvr for all day wednesday what is going to cut undercover the action at fox business 1:00 p.m. eastern were to go commercial free, the rate decision comes down to p.m. eastern and jerome powell's press conference begins a half-hour later that will spill into the final hour of trade and at "the claman countdown" we will have complete coverage of the market reaction

were to make another go at the merger, how would you at&t formulate a plan to present it that would be palatable to the regulars. >> i'm not involved with writing the business separate management and the question to that, things have changed remarkably, there is broadband everywhere you beat funding commitment that is going to ultimately finish off the last 12 - 50000000 homes and robust internet access in this country there was a lot that were not there and a lot has changed since these assets were considered for accommodation. liz: i get it, it was an incredibly busy weekend and what was the fact that there was an agreement between disney and directv you don't run the business but it looks like a pretty significant deal you
3:18 pm
think is a lot between bob iger over at disney. >> and big everybody's happy there was an agreement i was under a lot of pressure from my two sons who are football junkies that were asking me it wasn't going to get taken care of, i did not let them down. liz: you did not, it was a big deal because my family in california a lot have directv and they were worried they would have to go somewhere else they had to go since somebody of all things cable to watch the debate and anything also they wanted to see. i know the u.s. open fans were not thrilled, this is a good deal with this deal you can bundle and sell disney channels by genre disney got more money they're happy about that but how do you think that will help the business? >> i think customers are going to be buying their video and entertainment a lot of different ways moving forward, that is really fundamental as why were investing in infrastructure like
3:19 pm
fiber we see the dynamics of more delivery better entertainment and more delivery of video into the home as well as content generated locally like videoconferencing for work has to go up street into the network as being the major driver as to why you need robust broadband infrastructure that only fiber can deliver. as entertainment industry delivers induced humor business models delivering entertainment packages that are set up for genre or different streaming options we think having the right infrastructure in place to meet that demand is where we should invest in our capital and were the returns for at&t are. liz: tv is one thing, the iphone is another people are living and dying by their iphones i don't know what it looks like for the iphone 16 but the analyst right now say maybe the channel checks and there's a thing out of it coming out are looking a little soft when it comes to demand because people feel openai the

artificial intelligence or the apple intelligence is not would be automatically in the phones but you're going to have these on the shelves what are you seeing as part of his demand and interest. >> we started taking preorders over the weekend and everything has gone really well from our point of view it's been a smooth introduction of the new device there's obviously a lot of demand that generated every time apple brings a new device out and were pleased we got to the first couple of days without any hiccups or volume related issues we are excited about what comes on friday and we can have good inventory and smooth delivery that was preordered from us they have great deals on the market and really attractive pricing so we can meet all of our customers needs and welcome anybody into the at&t family who might like to come in and try our award-winning wireless network or combined with great fiber solution we feel pretty good and i think apple's point of view
3:21 pm
which is probably accurate to software-based introduction and while there introducing the hardware portion of this on friday as you know some of the a.i. capabilities that you mentioned will be a fast follow a little bit later in the month and this could be one of the things that we see demand slowly start to build as a feature start to hit the market and people become more acquainted with them. >> it makes sense because maybe it's off to the beginning and when the software features are updated i'm hearing you say the phone guys like you have to offer big subsidies they are covered by you not necessarily apple there's a lot of fine point, is it fair to say that your demand for the iphone 16 that you are seeing is better than the demand for iphones last year or less?
3:22 pm
we are seeing a similar cycle to what we seen in the past and we try not to over roll tape on any one or two days worth of activity we see these things look lumpy as we can move through them, by the time we get through this week we will have a better sense of what this looks like versus last year. but were really pleased with the rollout. >> talk about the rollout of your infrastructure you are building a much more of this in this the big three, t-mobile, verizon and you guys and there's always a competition but when it comes to extending broadband, this goes back to the directv issue were regulators may be okay with a possible merger with echostar and dish, the rural people are left without a lot of broadband and you get a sense is going to bring more market share? , when it comes to ruling out fiber there's a big one, that's at&t followed by anybody else was trying to chase it, we feel
3:23 pm
really good about where we are, this is a generational technology, it is no different than the dawn of wireless, early on we saw wireless and for structure being deployed and it was a unique thing to have services in one geography but we did not take her mobile phones into another city or at least expected to be a seamless experience but over time these networks got big and capable and started getting integrated and fiber is going to be next and infrastructure in the united states will be the premier way to get broadband into fixed locations. is going to be the backbone of all great wireless networks and at&t is leading in the amount of fire that were put in place and we intend to keep that and continue to invest in a way that allows us to be really effective in meeting our customers needs with the best product in the market. liz: finally would you push to go in a bigger way to offer high-speed broadband through wireless networks, something
3:24 pm
verizon is trying to do more of. >> we do that today we see a place, there's certainly some customers and businesses that have an all wireless solution, it is the best choice for them but for large households and households where there's more than one person in them and any place that is doing any kind of reasonable amount of entertainment that you described earlier in our discussion, we think fixed infrastructure is going to be essential for that and we certainly want to play in that space and that's why were investing aggressively and fiber which we think is a sustainable long-term play for a business. liz: it is a fascinating business witness by friday, saturday and sunday and all you had to deal with it's great to have you. never a dole moment, it's always great to have you, we appreciate you coming on. liz: john stankey of at&t, as the eyecare giant stock sees a
