they're good. thankses, lauren. states are struggling to recover from helene and milton rapidly intensifying and set to hit florida's gulf coast on wednesday. janet dean is in the weather center. >> almost a category 5, stuart, as of 11:00 a.m. advisory and national hurricane center said it'll be a category 5 and it's a monster. it's not often that you see almost category 5 hurricane on the satellite presentation. i mean, it's really perfect. you can see that doughnut shaped eye. you've bot all pour quadrants filled out incredibly and talking about devastating catastrophic damage as it makes a b line towards the tampa bay area. here is the latest tracking and ben, we're going to be talking about category 4 storm as it approaches the west coast of florida and we think sometime wednesday into thursday. hurricane watches are in effect but this is going to be a storm

surge story. yes, certainly category 3 and category 4-force winds but the wall of water that gets pushed inland to the very vulnerable coastline from springfield -- spring hill down towards sarasota into ft. myers and upwards of 12 feet. this area of the coastline has never experienced this in their lifetime so this would be catastrophic to this area. this is one of the most, if not the most vulnerable city in the u.s. in terms of storm surge. that is two stories of storm surge and a wall of water going into the bays and inlets and bring catastrophic damage and as lauren pointed out, we just had hurricane helene and record storm surge for this area. this is just going to be a one two punch and it's not looking good. 3-5 inches of heavy rainfall and a quick mover. it'll slice across florida. we could see the potential for

strong winds for orlando but the west coast of florida that i am the most concerned with, stuart, and a lot of areas people are urged to evacuate. this is the biggest evacuation since 2017 and flood advisories and watches and warnings in the regions but it's the storm surge. it's the deadliest part of the hurricane. that's when all the water is pushed inland and when you've got areas at or below sea level, that's unsurvivable. you've heard that a couple of times with the last hurricane helene, i cannot stress it enough that if you have a storm surge of 10-12 feet on top of the vulnerable areas, we're dealing with, you mo, a humanitarian crisis unfortunately. please listen to local officials. listen to local forecast. foxweather.com is all over this. this will be a historic event p we get a 10-12-foot storm surge

this was the most devastating storm in the history of cedar key. hurricane idalia had the record of storm surge and come some areas over 12 and total devastation and all the commercial buildings destroyed and half the homes inundated with water and the town is absolutely demolished. i'm here at the food bank. we're boarding up the windows here in anticipation of the next hurricane. so having already survived the three most powerful hundreds the island has ever had in 13 months, we're feeling punchdrunk. i don't know how much more our island can take. stuart: jd vance is disappointed with the federal response. what's it look like on your island? cedar key is an island. you don't rely on tourism? >> we have the unique distinction of the only coastal community where tourism is not

the primary income. we're clam farmers and fishermen and like our guests coming on the weekend. we like you to come for the weekend, spend money and leave, we're not primarily a tourist destination. we've seen very little in the way of help from the federal government here. governor desantis was here the day after the storm hit and i gave a tour of the island to senator ricks scott, marco rubio was here, state representatives have been here. so far i hate to make this political but so far i aubrey with senator vance, very little in the way of federal assistance. not to say it's not coming but we're relying on neighbors, we're relying on volunteers and we've had to pause our recovery efforts today to get ready for the next hurricane but so far the response from the community has been overwhelming. our island might be destroyed but our community in cedar key is strong. stuart: how do you prepare for
