given to the ukrainians, vlad her boot behind ukrainian line so we expect them to get worse in the short term, but for the first time since of this war began, the last couple weeks both sides are in a pose addition to negotiate. president zelenskyy has said in the last week that he thinks negotiations could happen because lives are better than land but he does have one concession he wants nato membership or ukraine to be under the nato umbrella. as a starting point that will never happen. tornado leaders in europe, neither turkey nor hungary will let that happen. it's an interesting starting point but the beginning of a dialogue that may take place. stuart: we hear russia is in trouble, casualties and the loss of military quitman but there economy is in deep trouble, the ruble is tanking. will that push them towards the peace talks or not? does he care?

>> i don't think it matters to him. russia has pushed as many soldiers forward as it can, doesn't matter about the death toll. in russia there isn't public angst against him but the economy is struggling and valeri putin, can he be pushed to the negotiating table? russia built up the economy. a huge percentage of the ruble is going into weapons and defense. he's got what he needs and they are churning out more weapons than ukraine is being provided with. in terms of weapons they provide more. stuart: thanks, good to see you in new york. as we were talking, zelenskyy has signaled he's open to negotiating a peace deal with russia. former state department official christian whiten, is this the trump of fact, pushing the two sides closer?

>> seems to be. zelenskyy said he wants a number of conditions before he's willing to talk to the russians. removal of all russian forces from ukraine before 2014, that would mean a bunch of concessions just to talk and he is willing to talk if not unconditionally at least more flexible than before. zelenskyy bet everything on harris winning and loss. he's an applicable mood to. stuart: need your comment on what's happening in asia. the president of south korea has declared emergency martial law. he says his opposition is sympathizing with north korea and paralyzing his government with antistate activities. what do you make of this? >> if north korea is involved, they've not shared that information with the united states as far as i know. south korea is in a tense

political situation not unlike the united states before the election was a conservative president underwater in popularity, some of thought they may have to cut his term short. he's up against the parliament which is under left-wing control. there's political prosecutions involved but to say north korea does of that, strains credulity and it is doing something kind of nuts, declaring martial law saying we might from members of parliament in prison for politics is what it looks like. it's early in the news report. stuart: that is a political crisis by the looks of it. see you later. this weekend, trump will make his first overseas trip since winning the election. where' s he going and why? ashley: he will travel to paris to attend the reopening of the notre dame cathedral. trump was president when the

cathedral caught fire april 15, 2019. he is set to join 50 heads of state and government for this event. trump's team has been in discussion with french president emmanuel macron's office and the president-elect was invited by the french government to attend the reopening. trump and emmanuel macron worked closely throughout his first administration with their relationship described as somewhat of a romance. trump posted on truth social, quote, president emmanuel macron has done a wonderful job ensuring about notre dame has been restored to its full level of glory and even more so it will be a special day for all. a chance to rekindle the romance i assume. ashley: what's the significance of trump going to france? that countries in the middle of a political crisis? >> it is.

emmanuel macron received a significant rebuff earlier this year. his hand-picked prime minister is under pressure to redesign. i think the symbolism of this is about the cathedral itself. this is obviously one of the great cathedrals of the world. it has become, it has become, for conservative catholics or christians of any sort has become an important symbol. it was burned in 2019 and there's all kinds of talk about it being an icon of secular, almost the initial plans for its redevelopment didn't look very religious about the rebuilding of it has become a symbolic resurrection for christians, increasingly a

million but a sizable number you are going to lose a lot of people from your industry. how can you replace them? is there a labor shortage? >> we are seeing a couple things. locally construction companies react to policy. they control what should they control, better hiring practices, making of our industry look more appealing, attracting a new generation of workforce, seeing more women in the workforce, jen z more drawn to the construction industry. we are seeing a shift where the construction industry, a new wave of outlook for the industry where blue-collar has an opportunity we haven't seen before. stuart: how do you feel about this personally? you work with these guys and they are hard workers, how do you feel about them being deported? >> it is a tricky situation. we are talking, put it this way. in 2022, one of every three mason roofer, drywaller was

stuart: well well well. justin trudeau reportedly told donald trump that his proposed tariffs would kill the canadian economy. how did trump respond to that? >> reporter: trump said of canada can't survive without ripping off the united states to the tune of one hundred billion dollars then canada should just become the 50 first state. justin trudeau nervously laughed at that idea but trump went further to offer justin trudeau the job of governor if canada were to become part of the united states.

everyone was laughing throughout this conversation according to forces that were at the table trump and trudeau but the point was delivered and made clear that trump expects change before he gets into office on january 20th. trump wasn't just hammering home that trudeau needs to tighten up the northern border but the trade deficit between the two countries needs to be addressed asap. trump said of trudeau doesn't fix that there will be a tariff on all canadian goods on day one when he gets into office and if that were to happen canada has a lot to lose, canada export 77% of their goods to the us totaling $440 billion. 25% tariff could cost the canadian economy a whopping one hundred $10 billion. at this dinner, justin trudeau made the point to trump that canada's border should not be compared to mexico's border
