20246789 check that market. dow is up close to 200 but way down yesterday of course. nasdaq up 112 and way down yesterday and we've not recovered from yesterday's losses. big tech a big picture and mostly higher. all higher, nvidia, amazon, alphabet, meta all up. 10-year treasury above 4.5% and something of a negative for stocks, 4.55%. that's on the 10-year treasury. now this, the teamsters union represents around 10,000 amazon workers and they're on strike. one warehouse in san francisco affected along with six delivery stations spread across the country. union wants more money for delivery drivers and accuse amazon of not showing respect for workers. it's the timing of the strike that gets to me right before christmas. it's hard to respect union members when they inflict maximum pain on amazon and its

customers. millions of families look for their gifts in those amazon boxes and some will be disappointed. this strike is just plain nasty. granted, a union needs leverage. you have to rely on pressure to force a employer to give in and pay up but holding up christmas gifts is, for me, a bit too far. we don't know how effective the strike will be if all 10,000 teamsters do go on strike, it's only a tiny fraction of the 1.5 million amazon workers worldwide. the effects may be minimal. we shall see. but deliberately hurting ordinary people at this particular time of year leave as bad taste in your mouth. union demands respect, but it's hard to respect anyone that goes out of their way to upset their fellow americans. big picture here is that amazon is fighting unionization. management wants to keep control of the business, they want to keep the union out. this strike will not resolve that fight, but it'll show a union that's prepared to interfere with your christmas. i hope they lose. third hour of varney starts now.

see my friend brian angry about the debt and deficits, let me give you a little number. in the first two months, there's a run rate of $312 billion a month in deficits and take us to $3.7 trillion of debt this year and if there's any reason why the 10-year yield going to 5, 6, or 7%, that would be a reason. i'm happy to see somebody is fighting it, it's amazing to watch the culprits continue to say, we've got to keep spending and let's do this and let's do that and ignore this and ignore that. we've got to get ahold of this or there's going to be big trouble going forward. stuart: yeah, i mean, this is clearly bad news for the stock market getting near 5%, surely that's bad. >> higher rates is a head wind and especially when you have the most important financial man on earth, jay powell, behind that curve and not understanding

just as many republicans did and many republican voters did. republicans did not like the disaster aid for hurricane victims was a trojan horse for unnecessary, unpaid, increased spending. the bill included special favors for lawmakers, including a raise for them and also allowing them to use alternate healthcare other than obama care. >> president trump needs to sit down with mike johnson and mike thune and come up with a new skinny cr if the president wants to do something on the debt limit, we need to find out what it is and put it in the bill. the president will have to help mike sell in in the house. speaker johnson's problem is that on the republican side, he's got a bunch of free range chickens. i'm not criticizing it -- or them but they wander off and mike can't catch all of them by myself. reporter: stuart, speaker mike johnson will need all the chickens he can count onto remain speaker in the new year.

national debt. so when our phones were ringing off the hook, our constituents were telling us, members of congress, hey, this cr, this bloated cr with all the extraneous spending that's not paid for, that's not what we voted for. we voted to implement government efficiency measures like those that elon musk is advocating for. so not too much influence. the right influence to get to a better product. stuart: well, you want this skinny cr. you want trump down to about 100 pages maybe and get rid of all this spending as you possibly can. would that pass, could speaker johnson get that through in the gop? >> i think he can. and i think it will pass. i think we're going to be voting on a more skinny, more fiscally responsible, more paid for continuing resolution. look, the last continuing resolution we passed back in september was only 21 pages. this was 1,500+ pages.

it had healthcare reform and it had subsidies for industry in there. had congressional pay raise and money for the key bridge and money in there for the commanders none of it paid for and some of the measures are important and certainly the disaster aid and assistance to farmers is very important, but needs paid for and nothing in there that the american people rejected in november. owe that's political posturing from chuck schummer and that's his fault. the democrats were shorthanding all the extraneous unpaid for provisions and i don't buy it. we're not going to shut down and

missed and now it's sprinting up. lauren: it was down there. stuart: o-k-l-o, oklo, nuclear energy. lauren: up another 12% and web bush said it's a buy and price going to $26 and cost of ai revolution that's underway. industry, they say, will need a tenfold increase in computing power by 2030, and nuclear is one clean reliable way to do it. stuart: sure is. thank you, lauren. california's high speed rail project is years behind schedule and billions over budget. now it's catching the attention of the doge team. max gordon joining us from hanford, california, where there's supposed to be a high speed rail station. will it be ready any time soon? reporter: stu, we're a long ways from seeing trains running and this project was supposed to be completed back in 2020 with a price tag of $33 billion. as you can see here, construction is still underway, a long way from completion.

still no clear completion date, and the price tag has ballooned to around $128 billion for the entire line. because of this, one california congressman wants to cut off federal funding. >> high speed rail authority says there's still a funding gap of $100 billion. they don't know where that money will come from. there have been five more ceos of the rail authority than there have been passengers, that's five ceos and zero passengers. a reporter: doge highlighted the woing on x and approved with a bond measure and props is that san francisco and los angeles could be conducted by bullet train with a protected top speed of 220 miles per hour and train delivers riders between the two cities in less than three hours competed with airlines and busiest domestic routes in the u.s. and providing a economic

boost with stops on the line and places here in handout ford. >> i don't feel like i'm going to see it end. to be honest with you. i mean, if it is done, that's wonderful, but i see more of the setbacks than i actually do see the progress. ism there's no operational lines and the train sets not even picked out yet. with the continued funding and ballooning cost, it's a line criticized as a train to nowhere this first segment will likely come at cost nearing the initial estimate of the projects estimated to be done between 2030 and 2033.

another dime. destroy the case, detroit rail or give to private contractor with no more government funds. governor newsom is a lame duck governor and got priorities wrong and wants to focus on illegal immigrants and not on american taxpayers or citizens of california. stuart: i don't see why i as a taxpayer in the northeastern united states, why should i subsidize a boondoggle going nowhere in california. you're right. this is something that doge should look at. this is in their purview, federal money going out and it's a waste of money. they should be there and cutting and that's my opinion at least. one more for you, leo. california prop 36, which increases penalties for certain left and drug crimes. it's now in effect. has there been any impact so far? >> we don't know because it's a

brand new bill and gavin newsom is opposed and, stu, the processer i have is we might have a prosecutor wanting to do a good job but we have people like karen bass and chief of police in la and won't participate or cooperate with ice and direct attorney can't prosecute if he doesn't get people arrested in los angeles and san francisco, you've got progressive politicians who are against incarcerating criminals. they don't to want put criminals in the -- jail. they want us to co-economist with criminals to the jury is out on prop 36. give me six months and bring it back and i'll tell you if there's an increase in arrest and decrease in shoplifting and crime. stuart: i'm looking that the from new york, this is where i live.

what kind of wealth tax? >> that's a good question and he hasn't given us all the specifics and a worldwide wealth tax and intent, it appears, it go after any kind of wealth that's jury trial joust held, stored in washington state but perhaps in other states and perhaps in other countries. on top of that, it looks like he wants to go after unrealized gains and seems rather browed in scope and at the same time -- broad in pope and he's hit a scope of $13 billion deficit and he's increasing spending and # relying on wealth tax to mitigate budget woes. stuart: there's no details and supposing i live in washington state and have a house in florida, valued at x number of dollars. does the governor propose to take money off me because i've got an asset in florida?

stuart: president elect trump nominated 12 catholics to top positions in his administration. resident theologian jonathan morris joining us this morning. will they take the gop in new direction s? >> a lot of these written by non-catholics but non-christians that say oh my gosh, i counted and there's 12 cath libs and what could that mean? maybe the pop will be telling president trump what to do or something. it's not true. the same things were said about the supreme court because there's a lot of catholics in the supreme court right now. that's just a result of immigrant communities and italians, irish, others and germans being successful and doing well for themselves. what we will see with these 12 catholics is that they're believing christians for the most part. that will have an effect on the
