different types of celebrations. that sydney bridge firework display is remarkable. 11:00 a.m. on the east coast on this tuesday, december 31. happy new year's eve. you have been watching new year's celebrations around the world. these two on the screen, hong kong, midnight there. taiwan also in singapore, the philippines and malaysia, they are now celebrating 2025. the nypd says there are no credible threats ahead of today's new year's celebration.
11:02 am
alexis mcadams in times square. what are they doing? >> undercover units mixed into the crowds. more than a million people right here in times square for this celebration. a few hours left to go. across the country and around the world. listen. >> they are persistent, high risk target. it is why we put so much emphasis on all of the resources that are here focused on keeping this city and this event safe. it is absolutely calibrated to what is happening overseas.
11:03 am
>> this new year's eve, police will be in the crowds including those undercover units. no credible threats, security is a top priority like every single year in the past. bomb sniffing dogs, drone units will be spotted here as well. they will be monitoring the airports bridges and tunnels. the mass transit system which is always packed here in new york city on major holidays like this lines have been forming since the early morning. people do not mind waiting in these lines. it is nice weather out, but it may not be later. waiting for hours to get a glimpse of this ball drop. once you are in the secure area, you cannot leave to go to the bathroom, get something to eat or you will have to wait all over again. >> it is not as if you can draw the line to go back into the pen making the entrance points at times square. that is why they don't recommend you leave. >> because these people wait for hours.
11:04 am
everybody has their own idea of fun. hopefully it is worth it once i get inside. it is supposed to rain later tonight. you cannot bring an umbrella income a large back packs or bags. they will look at all the items as well. >> great stuff. thank you, from a very quiet new york times square. that will change very soon. thank you so much, alexis. let's get back to the markets now, if we can. we follow these all day every day. main margaret are up very slightly. the nasdaq down slightly essentially flat with very low volume of trading today. big tech names, alphabet is higher. only by a hair. microsoft, amazon and apple all down a little bit. down 1%. take a look at the 10 year treasury yield. it is up 1.2 basis points up 4.54.
11:05 am
well-off of the seven-month highs that we saw 4.6% last week now this. beginning january 1, new jersey will no longer require teachers to pass basic reading, writing and math test in order to receive their certification. maybe not passé basic test teaching our children. >> reading, writing and math. you kind of realize what the public education system has become. the focus is not the things that make you smarter or prepare you for career, the focus is too often all of these ideological things, i guess you don't know how to read and write about, you just need to be able to teach the dogma about ddi or crt or whatever is a woke thing of the
11:06 am
day. this is why you need school choice. if you are paired in new jersey and you see this, you know what, i will take my money and my kid and i will send them to a school where the teachers have to know how to do this stuff. then you get an education. by the way, you would not have school systems out be able to do this kind of nonsense. >> is there a shortage? is that one of the reason the standards are being lowered so low is because of a shortage? >> that is what they say. we do not have enough teachers so we will change the rules to hire people that probably do not know how to teach and that will solve that. that is government running your schools. that is what you get this day and age. >> that is awful. colleges could see enrollment numbers fall to record lows apparently over the next decade. what is driving people away from higher education, do you think? >> demographics is one of those things. falling birth rates.
11:07 am
fewer people to go to college. fewer seniors choosing to go to college. the percentage of graduating seniors that go to a four-year college has dropped. so many of our four-year schools are a bad investment. you do not learn the things there that help you get a job that allows you to pay off your debt or pay for school. more people are saying i will try something else. this system is broken. people understand that at colleges and universities, they are not getting the education they should to justify the cost and they are looking elsewhere. schools will have to close and that is probably what has to happen if we have a higher education system that actually delivers results. >> yeah. could not agree more. great stuff. great to have you for the hour. let's check the markets right now. essentially across the flat line right now. the trading volumes are very,
11:08 am
very thin. the dow, s&p and nasdaq to slightly lower. essentially, flat. alyssa joins me to talk about this. as we look ahead to 2025, could the volatility still be there? >> great to be with you. yeah, i do think so. first, let's add a little context here to the current moment. if you go back to december 18, we had a fed induced rationing in the market. the nasdaq down 3.6%. s&p down 3%. the russell over 4%. usually when you get a bad break like that, it takes a market a little while to peel. if you think about august, we saw big crash. you do get the volatility a little while after that. i also think, if you think about the run up to what happened in mid-december, we had six weeks of fantastic gains. stocks like tesla go from 282480
11:09 am
when you have the incredible moves, you do need a little bit of a digestion. the silver lining is for investors. we could be getting new buying opportunities. the volatility short-term could mean that that could take a little while to play out. i am waiting for things to calm down after the first week of january where we could see because of the fantastic gains investors have had, they push off their selling into the new year for tax reasons. >> as you look into your crystal ball, alyssa, what do you think the top-performing stocks could be of 2025. >> so, i think artificial intelligence, that has to be front and center for investors. if we look at the top three performing stocks of 2024, that could provide some clues. a little bit of aia adjacent. nvidia ai chips.
11:10 am
i do think as those opportunities continue to proliferate, of course with the backing of an administration that will focus more on innovation, deregulation and tax cuts, i do think ai, anything in that scene. you want to focus on the leaders within ai. >> a lot of commentators will say, you know, the gains are too narrow. to be more healthy, we need to see a broadening of the market. if that is the case, where else could we see growth other than the big ai tech names? >> that is a good point. if it is easy market it's hard to mess up with their stock picks. it does require little bit more skill and luck in stockpicking. what helps with that is if you focus on companies outperforming the market. that increases your audience success in my view and my
11:11 am
experience. buying something already headed in the right direction and outperforming, you usually see a continuation of that strength. look at the winners of 2024. also, the strong fundamentals. even better to see acceleration in the top and bottom lines. if you're looking for stocks outside of aia, i would start with looking at what are the stocks that have the standout, technicals and the mentals as well. that could be in any sector. sometimes, you will find those hidden gems. >> grated bison great to have you with us. happy new year to you and thank you for being with us. >> happy new year. good stuff. >> thank you. >> a look back at some of the best moments of barney and company. >> eating a chocolate valentine. i put the chocolate in my mouth and the floor man just said 10 seconds. chinese hackers targeting the treasury department, hacking into workstations we are told and unclassified documents. grady is live at the white house
11:17 am
what is the administration saying? >> they are calling it a major incident. a hacking group associated or affiliated with the chinese communist party got into the treasury department systems and got a hold of unclassified documents and got into those workstations that treasury department employees use. the treasury department was notified about the hack on december 8 and then sent a letter to the senate banking community alerting them to the hack yesterday. the letter says they remotely access the info one of the departments third-party cybersecurity companies called beyond trust. the compromise service has been taken off-line and there's been no evidence that the hacker still has evidence to the system more information. experts say this could be a growing problem. agencies are especially vulnerable to this kind of cyber attack especially at the treasury department.
11:18 am
>> they are the ones owning the sanctions that are being done on chinese and other governments. it makes them a target more so than a corporation when it comes to state sponsored acting. >> so we are told that the hackers got access to unclassified documents. it is unclear exactly what was in those documents that they got their hands on. for its part the chinese embassy is denying any involvement in this hack. no surprise there, ash. >> you just took the words right out of my mouth. no big surprise. thank you so much. now, this. russian foreign minister has rejected they reported these deal involving ukraine and nato. that deal being made by trump advisors we are told. retired lieutenant colonel joins me now. colonel, i do not know the

[laughter] >> we do know that russia and ukraine, by the way, swapped the hundred prisoners. russia continues to try to sabotage ukraine's critical power line. they are continuing to grind this thing out. to your point, are we had a stalemate or as of russia starting to make gains? >> both sides are at strategic

11:21 am
trump likes to make deals. he does not like to make bad deals. >> gnocchi does not. retired lieutenant general warning that elon musk influencing government poses national security risks. retired general says that musk's business dealings with china actually pose a threat. what do you say to that? >> an old friend and a great guy just because you are retired navy general does not mean you have good advice. lots of people are doing deals with china. are you corrupt. that is the question. joe biden was doing deals with china. he was corrupt. all of the dealings have been enormously transparent which i think it's very healthy. when they agree and disagree on things they said in public so we know what they're talking about. the other thing is, in the end, the american people got donald trump elected president. he borrowed millions of voters to win that.
11:22 am
he will keep them. i do not think the musk trump relationship or the role the government will be a problem at all ever. >> we will leave it right there. lieutenant colonel. great stuff as always. thank you for joining us and happy new year to you. >> thank you for having me. >> thank you. come back in here, brian. what do you make of musk's influence? >> i like his influence. he is talking about doing things that need done in the government this general, i appreciate his service. i went on x where he posts a lot he posts a lot on elon musk's platform. i noticed he seems to have a very anti-trump in a very anti- musk guy so it does not surprise me that maybe he wants to put a wedge in between the two. watch what musk does. if you want to know what he is about, watch what he does and
