maria: welcome back, good monday morning. thank you for joining us. i am maria bartiromo monday january 6. 7:00 a.m. on the east coast. time for the hot topic of the hour, congress is set to certify

the results of the 2024 election at 1:00 p.m. eastern as a massive winter storm bears down on d.c. is not expected to delay the proceedings. lawmakers are pretty the focus on implementing the trump agenda. the president-elect posted on true social urging republicans to unite inside one powerful bill to his desk as soon as possible which includes border security, energy policy, tax cuts and no tax on tips. house speaker mont johnson broke the news on "sunday morning futures" which also included the debt ceiling in the new bill. >> president trump likes to say one big beautiful bill. if he can put it together one big up or down vote that could save the country quite literally because there's so many elements to it. maria: are you expecting to raise or eliminate the debt ceiling as part of the big bill? >> i think we will have to do in the bill and reconciliation you can do it just for the republican party. retargeting of low and the house and maybe in the first week of

april. >> you're talking about the first 100 days. maria: the worst-case scenario is having a bill out by memorial day but of course south carolina senator graham has been working on two bills one focused on the border and energy permitting later on and tax cuts later on in the year. this idea of doing one plan is concerning. >> if we don't put border first and get it done it's going to be a nightmare for the national security to the tax-cut wing of the party. i'm with you but if you will border security hostage to get tax cuts here playing russian roulette with our national security. as we negotiate tax cuts they are taxcutting people and i am one of them that won't vote for border until i get all their taxes. i'm not a big fan of the salt deduction. 11 south carolina where we have

low taxes. why should people in south carolina subsidize california and new york. maria: liz peek this is a conversation a washington among lawmakers have, how will they get on the same page trump is committed to office in two weeks and he wants a bill with all the priorities on the desk in the coming months. >> i think someone mentioned earlier a lot of the border protection and strengthening can happen via executive decision by the way executive order that's what trump to the first time around. maria: they need $100 billion and they cannot get money through executive order read then you $100 billion to do the deportation to create beds and facilities to hold people while they're deporting them. that is what that is, they need $100 billion in congressional approval. >> if johnson is right and they can get all of this under one

bill and get that done in the first 100 days i don't see why wait on the tax issues. i think they're much thornier than the border. certainly republicans are unified on the border issues. let's get done all of this. the reason trump wants this, his advisors no it's much harder to do two bills than one. by the way lindsey graham may have issues on taxes. we are more of a majority in the senate we could lose one or two senators, republican senators and still get this done. we have no flexibility in the house whatsoever so they have to take their lead a little but were. maria: that's the issue they cannot lose easily and they have a slim majority last time to reconciliation packages were done was under newt gingrich that was the speaker of the

house. and they were able to get it done but that a much better majority. a bigger majority when newt gingrich was a speaker. >> i think the american public is looking for massive change for how the sausage is made in this first pass that were getting the sausage is so full of stuff that we cannot even get anything actually done especially when it comes to not so much the border with the tax policy that trump talked about continuing and renewing. it's a big problem if people do not want to see trump come in and have a repeat of his first administration which was completely hamstrung. maria: by the way another story in the washington post that trump aids are ready to narrow down his tariff plan. that is another positive in their talking about the critical items to tariff read another story were watching could touch trade and that's new pond steel

they may sue the u.s. government over president biden blocking acquisition of u.s. steel. biden said the deal would place one of america's largest steel producers under foreign control and create risk for national security and critical supply chain. japan's prime minister is getting involved asking washington to explain clearly why this deal presents a national security concern. lydia hu spoke with the ceo of u.s. steel and a fox business exclusive. watch this. >> a couple of months ago you also said you were focused on the deal and you seemed confident the deal would close in president biden just blocked it. what went wrong? >> we did everything right is a company with nippon, the government failed us, they failed because they didn't follow the process. you we're going to write that wrong. they failed our workers and they

failed our communities and they failed our country. they failed our best ally in asia and even bold in china by not following the rule of law. maria: i do see national security issues because steel is used in the military and throughout the industrial economy in president trump was against the steel. he said you have to block it. >> biden and trump are wrong on this, what is nippon steel going to do take the factories out of the united states, that's not going to happen. just the opposite they're willing to put a billion dollars into resuscitating plans that are old that are not competitive. this will strengthen the u.s. steel producing, forget whose name is on the top of the leaderboard. were talking about companies investing in america and that's what presumably donald trump is all about and i agree with u.s.

steel ceo this is a real slap in the face of japan. japan which is beginning to produce weapons and be helpful in confronting china and that is a huge change over the last 20 t relationship and we need to encourage the strengthening of our steel producing industry. maria: what do you think rebecca. >> have a little bit of a different take. i think back to the 2020 pandemic and i think about the bolding that we were doing to china for the medical ingredients because of the supply chain. this is the third u.s. steel producer in the united states. mostly manufacturing aluminum sheets for cars and construction, and those kinds of things. in japan is a strong ally and we consider them a loyal partner since world war ii. it's your point we cannot

director and private wealth director. also rebecca walser. thank you for being here, great to see you both. futures are trading higher take a look at stocks as we kick off the first full week and the new year dow industrial .23 and dow industrial to enter 27. i think has something to do with the trump agenda and what were hearing on trump's terrorists plans husband or mike johnson told me on "sunday morning futures" he wants one reconciliation bill to trump status by the end of april how important are the tax cuts for investors in the debate that lawmakers are having over one bill with the tax cuts and the border money as well as potentially the debt ceiling getting raised or two bills which send a lindsey graham has been working on. >> thank you for having me on, happy to be here i think it's extremely important leasing the tax cuts that trump into place

line insane and we will not overpay into business with people not respect. maria: breaking news on the new pond steel in u.s. steel deal they will file a joint lawsuit against the u.s. government. lydia hu is on the story. >> good morning maria breaking moments ago nippon steel in u.s. steel announcing they are filing a pair of lawsuits against president joe biden and the committee as well as u.s. steel competitor cleveland cliffs ceo in the president of the major labor union united steelworkers aiming to get a new cts review process under the trump administration. i had a chance to sit down with the ceo of u.s. steel dave barrette for his first interview since president biden blocked nippon accusation of u.s. steel in the move last week to get his

remarks on the lawsuit and all the companies moves from here. watch. >> we did everything right as a company with nippon. we did everything right, the government failed us they failed because they did not follow the process. and we're going to write that wrong. they failed our workers, they failed our communities. they failed our country they failed our best ally in asia and even bold in china of law. cynthia's is supposed to be robust and confidential and we find it was neither robust nor confidential and the president of the united states shamefully painted that process from the very beginning we respected the

like with legal issues we have seen corruption and organization for mildly and we're going to do something with litigation to right this wrong so our workers in our communities and our country will benefit. we need to fix this. when we see something egregious like in this case clearly the process was tainted and from the very beginning when he made his first statement about the deal he has been unwavering in the cost of u.s. steel intercommunity a lot of time and energy and money because he did not follow the rule of law. the should've closed in the second quarter. it strengthens national security. >> we will soon have president electra. have you been in touch with this transition team or with president-elect trump. >> i have not we look forward to the opportunity. he is not the president yet but

i sat with him on march 1, 2018 will be put in the tariffs at that point. i know he cares deeply about the workers and i believe he will write this wrong. he will understand the facts of the situation and he's a bright guy and he will make sure that we follow the rule of law. he had a little bit of experience being attacked by the some illustration so he knows what were going through. >> the union united steelworkers have been among the loudest critics of this deal. >> of going to interrupt. the international union has been, the workers, no. i would invite anyone to talk with the workers and get the truth how they feel about the deal because international has had any dialogue with the workers. they don't understand this deal.

>> how do you move forward working with the union. >> we have a great relationship with the local union. the international union's challenge because we have not had a great relationship with them but the work gets done at the plants and the people at the plants understand what needs to be done and they understand this is a great deal. >> give a collective bargaining agreement that is coming up for renegotiation middle of 2026. this will certainly be an issue that comes up. >> i think is going to have to be some healing. >> as dave burritt put it some healing will have to come as nippon and u.s. steel say they are filing a pair of lawsuits aimed at among the defendants, the president of the united steelworkers the major labor union. we are in the process of

reaching out to the union and cleveland cliffs u.s. steel competitor and d.o.j. to get comments on all of this. sources that are familiar with the companies think you believe if they're able to get a new cfius review process under the trump administration that this deal would be approved. nippon will be clear to acquire u.s. steel. i should mention, as we know president-elect trump has been clear about his opposition and concern about nippon proposed acquisition as well. it's not clear whether that is the path forward. u.s. steel is telling me they are confident that president-elect trump will look at the merit of the deal and not the politics of the matter and they hope that they'll be open to considering the deal moving forward. finally i did ask dave burritt, the ceo about the future of u.s. steel without an investment of nippon. he said without nippon's

investment, jobs in western pennsylvania might have to be moved elsewhere to other planes that are operating efficiently for u.s. steel. he said without nippon that is a possibility moving into the future. a lot on the line. maria: i tell you i spoke with president trump about this deal and he told me he would block it. i don't know if that changed and we will see if the ceo can have a conversation with him but president trump is where president biden is on this. great reporting. lydia hu in pennsylvania. stay with us. we'll be right back

lawmakers holding you hostage that you ensure the salt deduction gets a lifted cap? >> is a member from texas we don't need it we don't have an income tax the government is funded through other ways and you will have other people concerned about that but that's what this process is supposed to be delivered a process where were bringing in representing a district ultimately we will have to come behind the plan and make sure we get the win for the american people. what will be really important we keep in mind america first principle that is true think about what were delivering for the american people and important to look internally in our conference to make sure it's not about as ultimately it's what's best for the nation and we have to look at the end of the year and say we may not get everything that we want but the country will be better off if we follow the play call. >> there is so much riding on this. let's face it one of the reasons the market is up as much as it's up since election day because

investors are expecting the regulation the lower taxes. the expecting that you want to invest in corporation because they will see a lot of positive business policies. if you can get the business policies across the finish line then markets are going to selloff. this could be a lot of impact. the question becomes will you get the tax extension done or not? >> i believe we are we are focused on making sure that we get this done. average family is looking at a tax increase of $1700 a year which is almost two months of groceries for those families. we've got to get this done. not to mention creating a tax environment where jobs are coming back to the united states and people back to work and innovation is working for the american people. all of this is important, from texas border and looking at the every single day we need to make sure to get that done but nothing is going to stop president trump from securing

the border. >> let's talk about the story on tariffs. this is one of the reasons that stocks are rallying night now. president trump's aides looking at scaling back his tariff plan, the washington post is reporting that his team is moving away from imposing universal tariffs on everything imported into the united states and instead placing tariffs only on certain sectors considered critical to national economic security senator. this is a big change if this is true. the post says they have the resources who said two weeks before trump takes office. his aides are discussing plans to impose important duties on goods but very targeted goods. your thoughts congressman. >> as president trump talks about we have nation after nation taken advantage of the american people in many businesses moving overseas in president trump is great at creating leverage is what he

knows needs to be done in our country. he used terrorists of the passive venues help going forward. what's importantly if you look at tariffs the restraint policy going on on the other side of things. it is a tool to get things done and make sure we're creating an environment where american jobs are coming back to american citizens and we are seeing us do those essential things. we went through covenants of the destruction of supply-chain and devastating it was when we were relying on countries. many were adverse adversaries. that's could be an important tool that we have in the bag and is good to see where were headed in the news that is coming out. maria: were trying to understand agenda this will set the tone for business and the economy. i know you have the election certification happening today that happens at 1:00 p.m. eastern despite the snowstorm. the government is closed on thursday for jimmy carter's

maria: welcome back, breaking news. a lot of it now this, president biden announcing a ban on new offshore oil and gas drilling across 625 million acres of u.s. postal territory. this happened weeks, two weeks before president-elect trump takes office. biden is invoking the 1953 outer continental shelf lands act. this means that trump would be congressional authority to reverse biden's band joining me american petroleum institute and ceo mike sommers. great to have you. thank you very much for being here. this is incredible. joe biden is making all of these changes as he walks out the door. you put out a statement

yesterday saying this. american voters a clear message in support of domestic energy development. the current administration is using its final days in office to submit a record of doing everything possible to restrict it. tell us more. >> the immigrant people certainly did not vote for less energy development in the united states. energy was on the ballot during the selection and energy one. unfortunately these midnight regulations being put in place by the biden administration are going to undermine american energy and security and her american consumers that is not what america voted for. i'm calling today on the united states congress to lift the new moratorium because it's going to harm consumers and undermine american energy security. >> is unbelievable, liz peek jump in here. this administration is completely ignoring what people are voting for as they put the new rules and as they're walking out the door.

trump is good evening congressional approval. >> this is ridiculous and as mike has said american voted for more energy development not less. my question to you does the congressional review act supersede this elimination of acreage and also i've not seen anybody talk about what kind of acreage is this. we have a lot of reserve stored in offshore acreage or is is marginal. what is your take on that. is this important or playacting by biden. congress has a number of different options that they can pursue the congressional review act is one of them but they can pursue this to the reconciliation procedures. the royalties that will be gained in offshore from developing the resources because they are federal resources will be tremendous.

if we were that were robustly seen plan on the gulf of mexico. that would score $8 billion for the american people, they can put towards other priorities like funding the border for example. if we put a robustly seen plan not just in the gulf of mexico but other parts of the offshore we could have tremendous resources to cut taxes for the american people or to do big things. we have an opportunity to reverse this in the first few days of congress. i think congress needs to get on this and make sure that it is a top priority for them in the early days of this congress but they have a couple of different options. i know that we can continue to find resources in offshore. it represents 14% of american oil and gas production now. we need to pursue these opportunities and quickly. >> the biden administration is banning natural gas water heaters from the market. this is a move that critics say will drive energy prices higher. certainly for low-income and

senior households the move would make noncondensing natural gas fire water heaters off shelves take them off shelves by 2029 in the bid he claims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. i would get your reaction on that but also what about the executive order. we will have a lot of executive orders. i'm hearing 20 executive orders, may be many more in his first day in two weeks, january 20. can he do a lot of moving the needle on energy permitting the executive order? >> we certainly hope so, this new natural gas water heater beyond is a regressive tax on the american people. this can hurt the most bondable among us, that's what sad about this. people who can least afford it that will have to pay the most for the new water heaters that they will have to install and retrofit into the places where they live. this is a sad day because it's
