in a beautiful thing. maria: have a great day, everybody. let's get to or "varney & company" with the latest. stu, take it away. sorry about that. stuart: good morning, everyone. we've got a state of emergency in los angeles. three separate fires burning. they're all out of control, whipped up by 900 mile an hour -- 90 mile-an-hour winds. rows of oceanfront homes in malibu have been burned to the ground. they're approaching the tightly-packed housing of santa month if ca. h.a. looks like a hellscape -- l.a.. let's get to politics. the president-elect meets senate republicans today. he wants to know what the gop can deliver. he wants one big, beautiful bill bringing together taxes, energy and the border. trump wants to to go big and go fast. the senate will tell him what he can get. to the markets. more selling after yesterday's sharp selloff. the dow industrials, well, we turned it around. now we've got a little bit of green. [laughter] got that right. the dow is up 20-odd points, s&p

up 4, nasdaq a gain of 17 points. just a little bit of green this morning. the problem for the market has been and still is interest rates. they're up, and investors do not like it. the yield on the 10-year treasury is now right at 4.7%. that will be close to the highest level since april. as for the 2-year, that is approaching 4.3%, 4.27, to be precise. an elevated level. investors don't like it. bitcoin, it's sinking. now quoted at $95,000 a coin. oil though, that keeps moving up, and that has the inflation hawks worried. you're at $74.57 a barrel right now. gas, no change from yesterday, $3.06 for regular, $3.54 for diesel. that is up one cent. all right. on the show today, the president-elect wants to to expand america. he's not ruling out the use of force to control panama, the panama canal and greenland. he sure knows how to keep the

been told to flee their homes as up to 100 mile-per-hour winds are fanning what appears to be uncontrollable flames hindering the firefighters. some battling the palisades fire which is burning through five football fields a minute. just imagine that. these firefighters are saying the ooh hydrants are dry -- the hydrants are dry. the winds are expected to get worse into tomorrow morning between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. folks in pasadena say they've never seen anything like this. [inaudible conversations] [background sounds] >> gone. there's nothing left. nothing left. lauren: heartbreaking stories from residents driving out of town, forced to abandon their cars when flames jumped the highway and they had to escape on foot and then their cars were bulldozed out of the way later. schools, restaurants, entire neighborhoods completely destroyed.

and in the wreck withage, look at this, this man rescues that american flag. stuart: it's a developing story. it's remarkable because it's moving so quickly. it's approaching santa monica -- lauren: they can't keep up, is and we've never seen anything like this, and it's the happening so fast. a. stuart: lauren, thank you very much. let's get to politics. trump set to meet with senate republicans on capitol hill. sources tell fix9 that the entire conference has been invited, it's not just the leadership. he wants to talk big about his big, beautiful bill. it would cover much of his agenda. the meeting's expected to begin around 6:00 eastern time this afternoon. next case, trump says countries are beginning to respect america again. >> i'm just telling you, this will be the golden age of america. it's the golden age of america. we're going to have a great country again. we're a country right now under siege. we have so many different problems. nobody respects us overseas, but now they do. the italian prrnlings as you

know, came here the other night, i flew in and flew out. she wanted to see me. and great respect is being shown. when i went to the cathedral in france, great respect was shown by the prime minister, the president, by everybody. stuart: todd piro joining me this morning. is that the trump effect? are we back at the head of the a table? if. >> absolutely. and it is vital that we are there because if we are not, china will be. now, look, we all understand how you negotiate, carrot or to stick approach. but what the biden administrations has done over the last four years is unrecognizable. it's let's give everything away and beg people to help us. that's not american, it has put us behind the 8-ball in so many different geopolitical ways that trump now needs to extricate us from. he's already doing it. we less than two weeks before he takes over, and it's going to be curious to see how often he has to use the carrot, the stick

and, ultimately, where the all leads. but your theme is correct, we're back at the head, and china should worry becauses this is what's good for the world. it's bad if for china, good for the u.s. stuart: this is something interesting that came out of that that press conference. trump, he didn't rule out using military force to control greenland and the panama if canal. he says it's necessary for national security. is this -- is he serious? i hate to ask a question like that, but is he serious? >> he's serious in the sense of it coming back to my if first answer, china. we are not going to take the united states' military and invade denmark in order to get greenland are. we're not going to go invade panama in order to get the panama canal. this is all about if we have to, using a military-type presence in order to deter china so that we can achieve our ends when it comes to the panama canal and when it comes to greenland. but, no, we're not going to have troops on the ground fighting the danish. even wherever denmark is, that's

not going to happen. that's not what he means. this is all bigger picture geopolitical against china. stuart: got it. stay with me for the hour, please, todd piro. we've turned to the green, not much, but a little bit. dead flat s&p, nasdaq now slipping 10 points. eddie ghabour with me this morning. we have treasury yields rising, tech stocks selling off. do you expect that to to continue? >> not in the near term, stuart. this rise in rates is no surprise surprise to us. we've been talking about inflation is going to to reaccelerate this year. and the 10-year, we believe, will ultimately get to 5% and higher at some point in time. in the near term, i expect a breather. rates have moved really fast, and i expect to to stay range bound. i'd love to see it stay in that 4.6 range. in that environment the market will be just fine, and i think you'll see a bounce. there's a little overreaction over one day, in my opinion. however, 2025, investors need to have a playbook on what they're

going to sell because that will be a major headwind, and it is getting closer and closer to that time. we'll be hitting the sell button. stuart: you're buying nvidia. nvidia's been our biggest position coming into in this year, and look, even after yesterday's big drop in that name which none of us like to see, it's still the up over 4% to start the year. there's not a better company from a fundamental per perspective to own, and because it's a large cap with large profits, i believe nvidia will give you the signal as to when to get out of the market. it will be one of the last ones, in our opinion, to wreak, and that -- to break, and that will be the sign that we need to rotate off the growth and play serious dependence. stuart: what would you call a break in -- defense. what would you call a break in nvidia's stock? >> this may sound as a stock, but i think we'll see 160 before we see 120, stuart. when the market does break, you'll see names like this, in my opinion, drop by 40-50%. and that that shouldn't come as

a surprise. it happens in every type of short-term bear market that that i think we're going to have to navigate through. so we are not buying and and holding this year. you have to be nimble, and you have to concentrate in the areas of strength. there are already many areas you need to to stay out of, in our opinion, that have broken down. the has been best of breed, and if you've been here, you've that had a good start to this year. stuart: my apologies, eddie, but i'm going back to my old theme, what's wrong with 4.25% on a 2-year treasury especially when you're in your 70s? >> there is nothing wrong with that, but i think you'll get a better rate if you're patient because this data is coming in hot. i think the fed has completely miscalculated things, and if we get a a 5% on the 10-year, that 2-year's going to to follow. we'll be right there with you at some point in time rotating into fixed income because there'll be fantastic opportunities in that space. stuart: eddie ghabour, we hear you. thank you. >> thank you. stuart: trump's cabinet picks

for energy policy, they're getting ready for their senate confirmation hearing. who's up first? lauren: doug burgum. he dose before the energy and natural -- goes before the energy and natural resources committee. chris wright with, nominated for secretary of energy, he goes the next day, and lee zeldin to head up the epa is expected next wednesday or thursday before the the environmental and public works committee. so this is the drill, baby, drill team, and their senate confirmations are expected to be smooth. e say that, for instance, just look at chris wright, you know him for fracking, but he's an all of the above energy guy. he's big into geothermal, and he also sat on the board of a nuclear company. so when they get confirmed, they'll get to work rolling back biden's energy policies, and all the money that was unspent on green initiatives, they'll try to get that too. stuart: chris wright, by the way, he's the guy who points out the positives of global warming. did you know that? lauren: yeah. it will have to be the either in person or virtually. he has indicated that it would be virtual. but yesterday at mar-a-lago, trump shared a lot of his foreign policy goals for his second term including acquiring greenland and the panama canal, and he would not rule out using military force. listen to to this. >> we need greenland for national security purposes. look, the panama canal is vital to our country. it's being operated by china. china. and we gave the panama canal to panama, we didn't give it to china. and heavy abused it. they've abused that gift. >> reporter: so the international community is now reacting to those comments with a spokesperson for the german government saying, quote, borders must not be moved by force. but democratic pennsylvania senator john fetterman doesn't think that purchasing greenland is so crazy. >> i do think it's a responsible conversation if they were open to acquiring it and, you know,

whether just buying it outright. i mean, if anyone if thinks that's bonkers, it's like, remember the louisiana purchase? >> reporter: so trump also called the u.s.-canada border an artificial line and then, after his news conference, posted this map of the who two countries combined with the caption, quote, oh, canada. outgoing canadian prime minister justin trudeau responded to trump on x posting, quote, there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that canada would become part of the united states. trump also a sent a message to our neighbor to the south saying if mexico doesn't stop the illegal flow of migrants across our southern border, that he will rename the gulf of mexico the gulf of america. mexico's president said the name is internationally recognized, and trump also sent a message to the middle east saying if hamas doesn't release hostages by the time he takes office in less than two weeks, quote, all a hell will break loose in the rage.

[laughter] he really does. nate foy in florida -- >> reporter: he definitely does. stuart: thanks a lot a member of the house foreign affairs committee, congressman if ronny jackson, joins me now. does the u.s. need the panama canal and greenland for national security? >> absolutely, stu. we have the those for national security purposes. it's aing buying to -- big deal for fuss, right? look, president trump is the master of going out and negotiating, finding things, possible consequences, some that people he's negotiating with don't really care for too much. and in driving them to the negotiating table, that's what he's doing here. you know? it's absolutely reasonable to think that, you know, we should be treated fairly with regards to the panama canal. you have china coming in, they're infiltrating themselves all over central and south america, doing the same thing there that they do all over the rest of the world where they provide lots of money for

resources, for infrastructure in the forms of loans and then they call for these loans, the countries can't pay these loans back, they expect preferential treatment. and that's what they're doing here. and they're treating the chinese preferentially here, and they're penalizing the united states. and we built the canal if, and if anybody should have preferential treatment, it should be the united states. we're just asking to be treated fairly here. it is a big national security issue with the chinese influence that's come into this part of the world. and greenland is also vital hi important for our national security, and if denmark can't from provide the money, the resources, the military to utilize greenland in the way that it needs to be utilized not president only protect the united states, but to protect all of europe and all of nato and most of the free world, hen they need to step aside and allow us to do it especially if the people in greenland want us there and hay want ingebs from -- they want independence from denmark now p. maybe denmark gives them $500 million in aid, maybe we offer them a billion dollars a year many in aid and come up with some kind

of security cooperation agreement with them, and that would be with fine too. of. stuart: it still comes as a shock when the president of the united states talks taking over greenland and the canal. anyway, let's move on. i want you to take a look at, this is a tweet from president biden. he says, i'm quoting. thanks to his action on the border, illegal crossings dropped 60%. it was republicans that that played politics while democrats fought to fix it. okay. however, agents in arizona recently seized a rocket launcher along with a two-rocket propelled grenades, got hold of them at the border. cheerily, the border is not -- clearly, the border is not secure, congressman. >> it hasn't been for years, and the reason the numbers dropped is because they started flying people in on the u.s. taxpayers' dollars and and in the counting them as illegal border crossings. they manipulated the numbers like they do everything else. it's worse handst the ever been -- than it's ever been, that's why he got voted out.

that's not a significant enough dip. nvidia is the most widely held stock in the world, andst it was a bit of a scary move to see it make a new high and then turn tail. i think that's got investors nervous, so i think we can see generally across the board stocks go lore especially if rates are going to continue to rise, which i think they will do. stuart: can big tech rally if the yield on the 10-year treasury goes above 4.7%? >> they're going to have a very hard time. it's going the to be earnings-driven, and earnings are going to have to be spectacular. i don't know that they can do that. and i think, stuart, we're going to see the 10-year test 5%, perhaps get even a little higher. that's going to put more pressure on the tech names. can they rally if we stay here? yes, i think they can. if we stay in a range-bound level as far as the 10-year yield, they can rally if earnings are great, question. -- yes. but i'm not so sure they're going to have the energy to do that. stuart: with that big dip in if

nvidia yesterday, did you buy any of that? >> not. we own nvidia. it wasn't a big enough dip for us to buy. just coming off a pullback, that's not unexpected. that kind of move is a little scary, we certainly will buy as we will all the majors if we see significantly lower prices. we'll definitely add to all our core positions, but we're not there yet. stuart: all right. shah ghailani, come and tell us when you are there and you want the buy something. going to cover it throughout the day. right now we've got the dow industrials opening with a 9-point loss, is that right? no, it says it's up -- look, dead flat. any way you slice it, that's flat. s&p 500, where did that that open? down 3 points. a fraction. the nasdaq composite, where did that open? down 18 points, .100 president. .10%. big tech, here we go, we have microsoft up a buck, amazon up 60 cents. apple, meta, alphabet down. meta's down $7 there, that is 1.2%. trump announced a new $20 the billion investment from dmac properties. they're going to to build data centers with that money mt. united states. good morning, taylor. $20 the billion, a huge invest ifment. >> yeah. and the ceo, the billionaire emirati who is the cofounder of that said at least that, maybe more. so he was so excited for the trump win because he's been waiting to make a big investment

in the u.s., and finally the climate is back, right, with trump in and open for business. the first phase is going to be in, the, arizona, obama -- stuart: $20 the billion spread around there. >> yep. stuart: nvidia partnering up with media tech to build a new chip. what's it for? >> it's an a.i. desktop computer. it's called project digit. it's a tiny little thing like this, but it's $3,000. it uses a blackwell chip, but they partner pd up with a are cp if u from media tech as well. basically, they're calling this, like, the a.i. supercomputer that any a.i. developer now could get their hands on this little thing. it looks amazing. we'll just have to see, again, the cost of $3,000 how it's put in use. stuart: but nvidia's putting this thing out. it's a physical, tangible thing, yay big, $3,000. a. i. computer. >> yes.

stuart: speak of nvidia, what's' jepsen wang saying about quantum computing -- jensen huang? if he didn't say anything nice. >> it wasn't great. he said if you told me a quantum computer would be here and be very useful in 15 years, i would tell you that's a little bit too soon. 30 years is a little bit too long. he said maybe about 20 years. you had all of the quantum chips falling on that news. we were hoping there would be a more useful quantum computer before then. sort of vetting our expectations and saying a really serious, full-use one still about 20 years away. stuart: okay, got it. why is palantir down so much? off nearly 2%. >> yeah. you know me, look, these are insider s that are selling. one top insider sold about 36 million, another director sold about 5 m. i get careful making too much of a big deal out of this. sometimes insider s sell because maybe they want some liquidity. these are very preplanned and you have to file with the sec.

i get hesitant reading into the and saying, oh, my gosh, insiders are selling. they think shares are overvalued. i don't think that's what's happening. sometimes they just need to sell for liquidity and preplanned purposes. stuart: let's turn the to amazon. their aws operation just announced that $11 billion investment in georgia. that's the united states, georgia. >> yes. stuart: what are they spending $11 billion on? in. >> it's bucks and douglas counties, going to be creating hundreds of jobs, and it's all on a.i. technology and cloud computing. a.i. is the future. remember, comes after microsoft a week ago said they were investing about $80 billion in a.i. data centers by june of 2025. so, again, this is more big tech getting onboard with cloud computing, a.i. data centers, all the like. stuart: delta the that the partnering with uber. what are they going to do for each other? >> okay. so delta partnering with uber effectively ended their 8-year partnership with lyft. all this means is when you get a

ride to the airport, for every dollar you spend you get a mile. if you upgrade, maybe you get a couple miles for every dollar or triple miles for every dollar you spend. so, basically, if you go to the airport and you get some uber credits, you also get some delta miles at the same time. stuart: that'll work. >> yeah. stuart: can i browse ebay listings on facebook marketplace? look, i really don't understand this because i don't do anything online. stuart: trump has filed an emergency motion with the supreme court to stop the sentencing in his new york criminal case which is set for friday at 9:30 in the morning. eric shawn has been following all of this. tell me, eric, what happens now? if. >> reporter: well, it's up to the supreme court.

president-elect trump's lawyers are filing an emergency motion to the high court to stop his sentencing on friday. the bid will first go to justice sonia sotomayor because she handles the jurisdiction of new york. she can then refer it to the full court to decide if frump's lawyer -- trump's lawyers are correct. they argue the sentencing on the 34 felony counts for paying off stormy daniels should not go forward day after tomorrow because the high court has given presidents wide immunity for official acts. they claim, quote, the new york trial court lacks authority to impose sentence and judgment on president trump or conduct any further criminal proceedings against him. trump's spokesman steven chung says, quote, the supreme court's historic decision on immunity, the constitution and established legal precedent mandate that this meritless hoax be immediately dismissed. but manhattan district attorney alvin bragg counters that trump's actions were before he was president and were not part of his official duties.

democrats held in the house that he carried the district. he should be in every one of those districts having a rally in favor of jobs, economic growth, take-home pay, affordability. and i think he will be able to get one big bill through. i worry very much if we split them up because historically the record in the senate is is so slow, remember in 2017 bill didn't pass til do december, we lost 40 seats. when reagan passed the tax cut in '81, they didn't go into effect until '83. we lost 26 the seats in '82. if we're going to keep the house, we need one big bill this spring, either memorial day as speaker johnson said, i'd accept julyth -- july 4th, but no later than that, and that will give us enough economic growth that i think trump will be in tremendous shape. but it's going to be a fight. we should understand, we did not win a realigning election, we won a dealing election. the country right now is waiting

and the ocean is literally on the other side, and this scene is by no means unique. as i drove in this morning from the north, i saw several residences, maybe a does deny or two -- dozen or two, many flames being destroyed here in malibu which is unusual only because this fire started in pacific palisades yesterday around 10:30 in the morning in a backyard in a residential area. that's a very densely populated area this fire got underway. and because of these winds which are blowing at 50 miles an hour sustained here along the coast, and at 99 miles an hour in the mountains, quickly those embers just spotted about a mile hate of the flames and destroyed several neighborhoods there in the palisades forcing the evacuation of some 30,000 individuals, 10,000 homes were threatened. people were rushing to get out, right? it created a grid with lock along sunset boulevard, and

people were told to abandon their cars if they wanted to live, and they began running for their lives. in fact, they had to bring in a bulldozer, two of them, later on to push hose cars aside to make room for the fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. from at the bottom of the canyon, there was cars piled on top of each other. there was boulders and debris that fell off the canyon that was on fire that was in the middle of the road where people had to abandon their cars. >> reporter: so, yeah. several fires burning across southern california, one in altadena up in the northeast. the eaton fire forced the evacuation of a nursing home, and then the up in sylmar, that's on the north rim of l.a. county, we have a fire there forcing evacuations. now, keith is going to pan a little bit to the left. if you don't mind, i want to show you how many homes along here, stuart, have been
