politicians. liz, the culpability has to to go to the hollywood community. because all those stars in malibu and all those executive producers and all those directors and all those people -- and i feel terrible about the loss of house that everyone, of homes and their personal possessions. that's a terrible thing. no one wishes that. but they for decades have sniffed up the smell of the left wing if america. and they've done this to hollywood. they started with crime. we had two years of our cities burning, and hollywood was beating the drum for whatever it was, for wokeness. this is where gavin newsom was trying -- larry elder should have won that election and rick ca caruso, but most of the hollywood community didn't go for rick ca caruso. back in the day when i first got there with sinatra and jimmy stewart and john wayne and you had a lot of big stars that were conservatives. so it was balancing out.

year companies canceling insurance in that area, but consumers are getting really angry. they're saying, what, we're all now supposed to foot the bill for democrat mismanagement in california? and biden is plowing more money into the area saying more money for six months' time as, you know, people are still freezing in north carolina. they're9 not getting money. >> yes, ma'am. upper east tennessee, north carolina, georgia, there's no water, there's no electricity. ma'am, there are people still living there in tents, and you have these arrogant federal bureaucrats saying we'll get you $700, but they don't have any even identification or a computer to get it, and it looks like they're going to roll out the red carpet hollywood elites. ma'am, that is another reason why donald j. trump is in the white house. they are tone deaf. they're getting their political advice from "the view," and that currently is why they're turning on each other, because they're seeing that their policies are

discharge for his conviction on 34 felonies for falsifying business records. this means that the president-elect will face no punishment, no probation, no jail time, and essentially also no fine. but it formally makings trump the first president -- makes trump the first president to be convicted of a felony. he appeared at his sentencing here in new york at the hearing virtually from mar-a-lago. trump spoke for six minutes. he blasted the new york court system and called the whole thing an embarrassment. >> it's been a political witch hunt. it was done to damage my reputation so that i'd lose the election and, obviously, that that didn't work. i'm totally innocent. i did nothing wrong. >> reporter: after court, trump took to truth social writing in part: i was given an unconditional a discharge. that result alone proves that there is no case. there was never a case, and this whole scam fully deserves to be dismissed.

today's event was a despicable charade. trump face thed the possibility of up to four years in jail, but judge juan merchan opted for no punishment noting trump will be protected by presidential immunity when he is inaugurated in ten days. >> donald trump, the ordinary citizen, donald trump, the criminal defendant, would not be entitled to such considerable protections. >> reporter: merchan went on to wish trump well saying godspeed in his second term. trump will appeal this ca case. the timing though, liz, is unknown. elizabeth: bryan llenas, alls great reporting from you. thank you so much. good to see you. >> you know, the fact is that this is not a criminal case, in my view, because there's no underlying crime. bragg took a dead misdemeanor, zapped it back into life as this pile of felonies. he essentially trialed -- essentially tried a series of federal crimes, and the

department of justice rejected it. elizabeth: that was legal expert jonathan turley saying there should never have been a new york case against trump, in his view, because there was no underlying crime. joining us now, julian epstein. julian has 15 years of experience on capitol hill. he served as the former chief counsel for house judiciary during the clinton impeachment. so no jail time or other punishment, a sentence in name only. you've said this new york case is a political abuse of the justice system. can you explain that to the viewer, julian? >> yes. thanks for having me on, liz. yes. this is, essentially, a gross abuse of the justice system. the unconditional discharge today is the judicial equivalent of saying never mind. they put the country through this for two years all for naught. it's an abuse of the the legal system, liz, because no american ever in the history of this country has been prosecuted on this fact pattern. your viewers don't need to know anything else other than that. if donald trump's name was

something other than trump, he i would have never been prosecuted. the judge is was conflicted, the prosecutor was conflicted. it will be reversed on at least three different grounds. there was never any notice as to what the actual charges were. the jury was able to pick from a menu of possible offenses. there was no unanimity requirement in the jury decision. and the reason it was such a gross abuse was because to the extent that this involved federal campaign finance charges, there is nothing in federal campaign finance law that says hush money is a reportable offense as alvin bragg alleged. in fact, you have former chairs that the judge would not let testify that has been very clear, chairs of the fec that have said hush money is not a reportable expenditure. this was a gross abuse of the system. the fact that more democrats like myself are not calling this out is just a test thement to how -- testament to how the justice system has been politicized during the biden

years. and the irony of this, liz, is that the trump justice department, i guarantee you from having worked with a lot of members of congress and a lot of politicians, the trump justice department go in and find minor violations and infractions all day long of democrats, and they can prosecute them criminally under these same bogus theories. and now the democrats, who have been preaching piously about protecting democracy have to rely on republicans to break the cycle of politicizing the justice system which the republicans would be, you know, sort of tit for tat in their right to be able to say you did it to us, we're going to do it to you. we have to rely on the republicans to break the cycle -- elizabeth: it's a terrifying place for america to be in. so just to recap, manhattan d.a. alvin bragg who, by the way, we heard reports he was talking to democrats in congress way back in 2018 when nancy pelosi had 85 targets to go after trump, when

they were starting to go after trump to impeach if him. they didn't really have crimes and seniors. they were talking about stormy daniels six years ago. alvin bragg reportedly was on the radar screen to do this. so he basically took a state, a state, new york state books and records, parking ticket the misdemeanors, bookkeeping misdemeanors, and ramped them up into federal felonies where the state has no jurisdiction over federal campaign finance law, and they never proved that any of this in any way changed anyone's vote. >> they -- no. the reporting would have occurred after the election. the alleged federal violation is not a federal violation as i just explained. the state had no jurisdiction to prosecute a federal violation even if they did have a violation. hillary clinton, i will remind you, had a similar infraction at the same time. she had a civil penalty instead. yes. i mean, there are at least five or six ways in which this case will be reversed. it was a gross abuse. it should be reversed. it should have never been brought in the first place.

as president. we're going to find things to work together for a better pennsylvania and a better nation. elizabeth: so first you saw democrats attacking trump, resisting him during his first term. now more and more democrats want to work with dump in in the house and the senate. senator chuck schumer, senator fetterman, more senators, aoc, other house democrats. let's bring in rnc chair michael whatley. michael, it's great to have you back on again. let's go through more details, please. 33 democrat senators advanced the laken riley act, and now 45 senate democrats joining republicans in supporting a pro-israel bill to sanction the international criminal court for, officials there for trying to prosecute americans and going after israel's e netanyahu and his team. what do you think of all this? >> well, donald trump ran on a very clear, very concise agenda. he's going to rebuild the southern border, restore our economy. he's going to the make sure that

america's strong enough to protect our interests at home and abroad. the american people support that agenda, and it's very good to see that there are democrats who are acknowledging that and are going to start voting, hopefully over the long term but certainly in the short term. they're going to recognize this is where the american people are, and if they want to keep their jobs, they're certainly going to have to support a pro-america agenda. elizabeth: you know, it's sort of like the wheels fell off of congress under president trump's first term. historians should look back on this period as one of the most poisonous and vitriolic and abuses of power by democrats to go after trump. they bent the rules to attack him. they wanted to impeach him even before he sat down in the oval office the first time without any crimes or misdemeanors stipulated. within six months at least a dozen resolutions to impeach president trump the first time. again, with no crime or misdemeanors stated.
