maria: welcome back. good tuesday morning, everybody. thanks so much for joining us this morning. i'm maria bartiromo. i'm is tuesday, january 28, 7:01 on the east coast. we kick this hour off with the hot topic of the hour. president trump's illegal
7:02 am
immigration crackdown is showing results as border agents reveal to fox a record low number of border crossings, congress is pushing for an investigation into sanctuary city policies by calling blue city mayors in to testify. madeleine rivera live in washington with the l latest. >> reporter: the house oversight committee sent four letters to the mayors of chicago, new york, denver and boston, the committee states while there are hundreds of cities and counties with sanctuary laws and policies, these four cities stand out because of their abject failure to comply with federal law. james comer says sanctuary jurisdictions and their misguided an obstructionist policies hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to effectuate safe arrests and remove criminals from american communities e making americans less safe. congress mist determine whether further legislation is necessary. a hearing investigating these
7:03 am
cities is scheduled for februar. president trump is digging in on his executive order blocking birth right citizenship. a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order to block it last week, calling it blatantly unconstitutional. >> we're the only country that has in it, certainly the only country that has it to that extent. it wasn't meant for everyone to come into the country by airplane or charging across the borders from all over the world and thinker they're going to become citizens. i hope judges will understand that. it has to stop because it's really hurting our country very badly. >> reporter: the president's hard line immigration tactics having a significant effect on the southern border. the number of illegal border crossings were already low in former president biden's final week of office. the figures are even lower. multiple sources tell us border patrol recorded 582 illegal
7:04 am
border crossings. tomorrow the president is expected to sign the first bill of his administration, the laken riley act which aims to crack down on illegal immigration. maria: those numbers you've got there show the peak just in the last few days or the last few weeks of biden administration but if you go back to the peak when we were seeing the worst and the heaviest numbers, we went up to 11,000 a day. i remember days when i was at the border when i visited the border five times and the average was like 8,000 a day. so when you're talking -- when you're telling me that 8,000, 11,000, now we're at 500 plus, wow. >> reporter: yeah. it really is. just goes to show you how much of a difference a week can make but the president campaigned on this and he certainly is delivering results. maria: he sure is. madeleine, thank you. todd, i remember those days we were thinking 11,000 people in
7:05 am
one day, that was december 2023. >> we were told by the president and his entire administration, my hands are tied, there's nothing i can do, this is just a problem of root causes, i guess. we're going to send kamala down to try to solve all the problems. okay, well, nothing we can do about it and look, within less than seven days donald trump gets that number down to a handful. it shows for the 800 billionth time i've said it on the program and you said it as well. it was purposeful what they did. the reasons was potentially to get the democratic votes. clearly, that backfired against them. regardless, they didn't want to solve the problem, they wanted the problem. they got the problem and now donald trump is doing away with the problem. maria: there's absolutely no understanding, there's no reason to have a wide open border with unvetted people coming in and not consider the national security impact there. i mean, president trump his
7:06 am
priority is safeguarding america, putting national security first, putting america first. that's why he's so focused on this. it's just incredible to me. by the way, what's up with say selena gomez, her posting a video of her crying over the i.c.e. raids. watch this. >> i want to say i'm so sorry, all my people are getting tagged, the children. i don't understand. i'm so sorry. i wish i could do something but i can't. i don't know what to do. i'll try everything i can. maria: are you serious? this is worthy of broadway. i mean, she should really get in the movies again. this is outrageous. was she crying over laken riley's murder? was she crying over the others
7:07 am
and the fact that we've got all this crime happening across the country? trump's border czar, tom homan reacted to it, he was on hannity last night. here's what he said. >> we've got a quarter million americans dead from fentanyl across the border. where's the tears from that. i met with thousands of moms and dads. we have sex trafficking in this country, they're separated from their families, put in the hands of criminal cartels to be smuggled in the country. this administration can't find 300,000. where's tears for them. maria: here's a news flash for you, selena gomez, no one's asking you to do anything. just sit back and watch your life get better. tom homan took dr. phil with him where he interviewed an illegal sex offender. watch this. dr. phil. >> never been deported from te
7:08 am
united states? what have you been charged with? >> charged with? >> before. >> [ indiscernible ] >> that's an example of sanctuary city, we've got an illegal alien convicted of sex crimes involving children. he's walking the streets chicago. maria: wow. dr. phil's getting into it too now, cheryl. >> there you go. child rapists, gang members in multiple cities across the country. she's defending murderers, you mentioned laken riley. selena gomez said it, i don't understand. no, she doesn't. she's a lovely actress. i love murders in the building. big fan. this is where the uneducation of hollywood is so pref lent, maria. go -- prevalent.
7:09 am
this is why they're going to get called to congress. they'll have to defend why you are not just defending and hiding in schools and in churches these illegal aliens, these illegal m migrants, but ao the fact, maria, common, these taxpayers that are spending millions of dollars. who's profiting? it's income distribution. it's w wealth distribution, it's disgusting. millions of dollars are going to the social services and it's getting stolen. maria: secretary kristi noem who was confirmed last week, she tweeted this. she happening now, enforcement operation in new york city. criminal alien with kidnapping, assault and burglary charges is now in custody thanks to i.c.e. she says dirt bags like this will continue to be removed from our streets. look, if you're coming here and committing a crime, sexual crimes, murder, you should
7:10 am
expect that the police are back in the room and you are probably being watched. secretary nome is just tweeting this out. the raids have begun in new york city. your reaction, david. >> as an average citizen, i frankly think that it's due time for this to go ahead and happen. maria: right. >> it's unfortunate that we've been exposed to this unfettered, frankly, pouring in of immigrants over the past number of years. they've hurt our country if a lot of ways and it's time to go ahead and put an end to it. maria: it's true. market has turned around, guys, the dow is now negative and that is largely because of a miss out of boeing. boeing earnings have crossed the tape. the estimates as you can see on the screen, the actual numbers missed the estimate. cheryl has all the numbers now. >> they missed. they missed big on earnings per share and revenue. the earnings per share, a loss
7:11 am
of 590, a loss of 590. the street was looking for a loss of $3 and 15.2 billion in revenue, that missed estimates, 16.21116.21 billion was the est. a lot of this was the strike, the commercial and defense units. this is the biggest loss boeing has had since the year 2020. and that west coast strike certainly was a problem with production but also they're foregoing setting any financial targets for the entire 2025. no financial targets. no forecasting. no one seems to like that right now if you're a boeing shareholder. back to you. maria: stock is down half a percent, that took the dow down and other averages as well. we're going to keep following that. we're going to slip in a quick break and come right back at it. don't miss it. you're watching "mornings with maria" live on fox business. stay with us.

7:16 am
the department of homeland security secretary kristi noem posting video of an i.c.e. raid in new york city. the secretary says that officials arrested a criminal alien who was facing kidnapping, assault and burglary charges. do we have that video to show what kristi noem is just posting there? joining me now to talk more about is new york congresswoman claudia tenney. congresswoman, good to see you this morning. i know you're in florida at your retreat with your colleagues there. let me kick things off on the border and what we're hearing from kristi noem. new york city is now the target for i.c.e. >> you know, this is tremendous, maria. i am so happy to see this and i've been home in k my district last weekend. i'll be there tomorrow. all i've heard is from citizens is how happy they are that we're seeing the illegal immigrants being harbored by the sanctuary cities being taken out of the communities and making the
7:17 am
communities safer. this is a huge win for the trump administration. it shows we have decisive leaders. we don't have the paralysis of analysis and really coming to and promoting and helping illegal immigrants in our communities. it's a real issue that trump is taking with true leadership. maria: because he's putting national security first as the priority and i spoke with senator john thune about that on sunday given the fact that you all are talking about an increase in the topline defense spending number. here's what the majority leader of the united states senate told me sunday. watch what are you looking for in terms of specifics in bulk up america's defense. >> well, obviously our navy and you look at the number of ships we have relative to our adversary, particularly china, the president is interested in an american iron dome concept but fangly the thing we've got to do is we've got to increase the top line. we have underfunded and in the biden budget there wasn't a single biden budget that kept up
7:18 am
with the rate of inflation when it comes to the military. and so we've got some making up to do. i think there's a very compelling argument on panama, a very compelling argument on greenland and optimism in america that we haven't seen in a long time. this has been a sluggish country, a country that's been bogged down under the weight of government regulation and red tape and taxation. maria: i mean, congresswoman, what the heck were they doing in the last four years? president trump just announced plans to build this missile defense shield for the united states. here he is. watch. >> i'll be signing four new executive orders. first is that i'm directing our new secretary of defense, pete hegseth to immediately begin the construction of a state of the art iron dome missile defense shield which will be able to protect americans. you see that with israel. we're at a 319 rockets, they knocked down just about every one of them so i think the united states is entitled to that and everything will be made
7:19 am
right here in the usa, 100%. maria: your reaction, congresswoman. >> this is tremendous. the whole reason that our founders created the federal government is for security and protecting us and that's exactly what the mission is. great to hear from senator thune. echoing the same remarks as president trump. we have a great leadership team coming in on the defense side as well as the homeland security side and national security advisor michael walls already doing a phenomenal job. when he talks about the navy, we need to continue to bring our submarines up to speed in the south china sea where our sea power is needed to counter china. this is incredible that we are finally waking up and recognizing that we have real enemies around the world and people that are looking to topple the united states as the dominant leader in the world. we are the greatest, most powerful benevolent country in the world. we have to lead. if we're not leading, the world is in chaos and that's exactly what we saw over the last four
7:20 am
years of the feckless knop kless non-leadership. maria: i know the border has been your priority, secure the nation. here's the video that kristi noem tweeted out, that enforenforcement in new york cis underway. she writes dirt bags like this will continue to be removed from our streets. but look, congresswoman, now the work falls to you and your colleagues. house republicans are set to meet with vice president jd vance today at the trump doral result in florida where you are all talking about executing president trump's agenda as part of this annual congress, the committee chairs expected to hold reconciliation meetings, how to pass president trump's agenda. trump joined lawmakers foredinner last night, saying he doesn't care if congress passes the agenda in one bill or two
7:21 am
bills but knows he has to get the agenda passed. tell us what it looks like. are you expecting to be united? because now the work falls to you but you've got one portion of your colleagues saying i'm not going to sign anything unless salt deduction is lifted. we've got another portion of the conference saying i'm not going to agree to any increases in the debt limit and i'm not doing anything with the debt ceiling because we've got 36 trillion in debt. you've got others saying we have to put more money into defense. are you going to come together and get this done? >> if we don't come together and we don't get it done, maria, this is exactly what the american people wanted, president trump has a mandate and they're depending on our republicans in the majority to make that happen. all these people are going to have to come together and as sean hannity said the other day, you're not going to get everything that you want. we've got to get the agenda across the finish line. we can continue to nuance it as we move through this. it has to get done.
7:22 am
we have to unify. our strength is unity and that's exactly what we're going to be doing. maria: is the biggest sticking point how much to raise salt? it's now at 10,000. the cap is 10,000. mike lawler came out with a bill last year, 100,000. you're not going to go that high, are you? >> well, look, i'm from new york. 3% of my district actually itemizes so salt is not a top priority for my constituents. it may be a top priority for a lot of the new york donors and people that are wealthy and need the salt deduction. there has to be a cam compromis. we made a compromise in 2017. i think they're negotiating high. in our meeting with president trump he said you need come up with a sweet spot. it those be something that matches what everyone else in the conference can accept and that's what we're going to be doing. we have to have a compromise. look, i agree with president
7:23 am
trump. he said how much more do we have to do to compromise to make sure that the new york government continues to provide bad govern governance for our new york taxpayers. we want to make sure we protect the lower and middle income taxpayers. it has to be a sweet spot. maria: what's the other point of contention, what's the other disagreement among you all? >> i think the big thing is a lot of people want to see us cut mandatory spending and maria, we had a bill, the repeal and replace obamacare which we passed in the house of representatives, it was voted down by one vote, john mccain, god rest his soul, voted no. we could have cut mandatory spelling. we have to get into doge and find out where we can cut because if we're going to go into rapid growth with the energy production, cutting taxes, you also have to bring down the go the cost of governm. we have record revenues. we've got to cut down the costs. maria: you can't go anywhere if your hands are tied because it's all mandatory. that's the bottom line.
7:24 am
congresswoman, great to see you. thanks so much. >> a sliver of what you see in discretionary spending, you 23knowwhat's in discretionary spending? defense. we have to grow defense spending. there's a lot of fraud, abuse and waste in the defense bun it. that has -- budge it. that has to happen too. maria: defense shouldn't be discretionary in my view. it should be mandatory. claudia tenney. thank you. we'll be right back. stay with us.
7:25 am
i'm thinking of updating my kitchen... —yeah? —yes! ...this year, we are finally updating our kitchen... ...doing subway tile in an ivory, or eggshell... —cream?... —maybe bone?... don't get me started on quartz. a big big island... you ever heard of a waterfall counter?... for everyone who talks about doing that thing, and, over there. but never does that thing... a sweet little breakfast nook. chase has financial guidance. let's see how you can start saving to make this happen. —really? —really? really. at home or in-person. you could also check out a chase money skills workshop.
7:26 am
that's guidance from chase. make more of what's yours. the way i approach work post fatherhood, has really trying to understand the generation that we're building devices for. here in the comcast family, we're building an integrated in-home wifi solution
7:27 am
for millions of families like my own. in the average household, there are dozens of connected devices. connectivity is a big part of my boys' lives. it brings people together in meaningful ways.
7:28 am
maria: welcome back. time now for the word on wall street, top investors watching your money. joining me now is asset management president and chief investment officer, kevin monn. also with us is david towel this morning. good to see you this morning. >> good to see you as well. maria: we've had a reversal in markets this morning, once again. futures were up, then they were down, then they were mixed. dow industrials down 49, that was dak up 26 after that global tech selloff yesterday. investors watched the chinese a.i. model deep seek while weighing the future of a.i. spending. nvidia was down 17% yesterday, the largest single day decline in history. the ceo lost $21 billion in net worth and nvidia told fox business, quote, deep seek is an
7:29 am
excellent a.i. advancement and perfect example of test time scaling, deep seek's work illustrates how new models can be degre created using that tec, using fully export control compliant. stock is reversing course. what do you do if you're an owner of nvidia. >> i think yesterday was a deep overreaction to the deep seek news, maria and the a.i. revolution is indeed alive and well. however, it should serve as a reminder to investors that the path forward for the a.i. revolution is like throw be filled with many potholes and there will be several twists and turns along the way. as a result, investors should consider not just investing in one name like nvidia. i'm not suggesting to abandon nvidia. nvidia will remain the hub of the overall a.i. ecosystem. consider other chip makers, other data centers, other adopters of a.i., such as hardware and software companies
7:30 am
and how about the power solutions that are necessary to power and cool those data centers regardless of the size and scope of the data centers. so there are more a.i. investment opportunities ahead but investors should use this opportunity to diversify and add other names to their portfolio in addition to nvidia. maria: yeah. but kevin, let's face it, i mean, nvidia was down 17% but the entire industry was down. everything went down yesterday, anything with an a.i. nuance. >> yes. and a.i. isn't dead, maria. in fact, i still claim that we're just in batting practice of a doubleheader so this is a long road and a long path forward and those companies that aren't investing in a.i. now are likely to be the losers down the road. it's just a question of how to spend and where to spend. maria: that's the point. even bit coin went along with it, david, jump in here on bitcoin now below $100,000. it is at 102,000, 622, little bit of a bounce this morning
7:31 am
after the selloff yesterday. bitcoin hovering around this price now. you say this reaction was uncalled for. and that deep seek will not sink american a.i. giants. tell us more. i agree with you, by the way. >> let's talk about the real easy trade here which is the crypto trade. frankly, there's no correlation at all between what the announcement regarding deep seek made and cryptocurrency. cryptocurrency does not in any way go ahead and rely on a.i. or chips for that matter in such a strong sense that there should be such correlation. so therefore, i expect the bounceback to go ahead and happen. we had the scott bessent confirmation happen. scott bessent is a champion of crypto, dave saks coming out and speaking loudly. the important thing with regard to crypto is seeing that the personalities that trump has appointed in terms of leading the charge on crypto and a.i.
7:32 am
for that matter, but for crypto with respect to investing this morning are speaking loudly, are going to go ahead and take their position seriously and we're going to go ahead and see a full throated support of the crypto surgery out of this administration -- industry out of this administration. maria: general motors reporting a double beat, they raised the 2025 forecast, seeing strong consumer demand for gas powered trucks and suvs. we're back to big here in america. boeing reported a double miss, annual loss of $11.8 billion. ouch. that's the largest decline since 2020. the aircraft maker wrestling with problems in the commercial and defense units and crippling strike by west coast factory workers as well. that stock yesterday was up a third of a percent. big tech reporting this week, you've got meta, microsoft, tesla, all out after the bell tomorrow night followed by apple on thursday. queskevin, give us your sense of fourth quarter earnings and what you're expecting from big tech
7:33 am
reporting this week. >> well, first i think we'll get a breath of fresh air from microsoft when they report tomorrow. of course, another software developer using a.i. but i also going back to your previous segment want to focus on aerospace and defense and the names of boeing and lockheed martin. i agree with your previous guest that we do need to increase dramatically our levels of defense spending. and defense contractors such as lockheed martin, the largest defense contractor in the world, who was just awarded a contract from the u.s. navy on september 20th are likely to be the primary ben factors. boeing is going through a number of different issues right no but they'll also be a b benfactor. look for the guidance coming out of defense contractors. i think there are better days ahead. maria: do you want to buy stocks going into all of these big earnings? >> let me go to the earnings of this morning and then i'll get to the tech.
7:34 am
on the gm side, you highlighted gas powered sales which is very important because gm made a quick pivot away from evs earlier than other automakers around the world and around the world is very important when it comes to the context here. a lot of european automakers are struggling, volkswagen in particular, stellantis as well, done very poorly, have a lot on their plate in terms of rates to go ahead and deal with because people can't purchase cars as easily if rates are higher but in addition they've got emission issues, labor issues abroad, a lot of shakeup going on in the automotive industry and gm is the prettiest pig in the batch right now. i expect them to continue to do well. boeing, the stock is up premarket. i think a lot of this was priced in. i believe it's too big to fail. i've been a holder of boeing for a while now. i'm a distressed guy, earlier in my career, and so therefore i think this is a great tuned story.
7:35 am
strond story. there's no competition when it comes to boeing. the rest of tech, earnings should be good. tesla will be the most interesting in terms of commentary. maria: that's really interesting what you said. you're ready to call boeing a turnaround story. that's important. we'll see. because every time you feel like it's about to turn around, something else happens that's a big call you just made. we'll watch it. kevin, good to see you. thank you,. .david, you're with us all morning and we appreciate it. stay with us. we'll be right back
7:36 am

7:40 am
>> over the past four years our government racked up $8 trillion in wasteful deficit spending and inflicted nation wrecking energy restrictions, crippling regulations and hidden taxes like never before. the result is the worst inflation crisis in modern history and sky high interest rates for our citizens and even throughout the world. i'll demand that interest rates drop immediately and likewise they should be dropping all over the world. maria: the inflation report for the month of december up nearly 3% from the year earlier, remaining above the fed's target of 2%. the buy biden administration leg consumer and grocery prices up better than 20% on their term, gasoline prices up 30% on biden and harris' term. joining me is former atlanta federal reserve president and ceo, dennis lockhart. good to see you. thank you so much for being here. >> good to see you.
7:41 am
maria: what kind of commentary would you expect from jay powell tomorrow? >> well, because i expected in this meeting they will hold, they will not cut rates, i think he will probably repeat some of the themes that he repeated, that he used in december, that there's still work to be done on inflation, that the economy is performing well, that the labor market is very solid and that the committee is going to stay focused on its dual objectives and particularly the inflation objective to try to get it down to something closer to 2%. maria: you know, i've got to tell you, i blame the fed for all these expectations, dennis. i mean, look, the federal reserve policy committee has four new voters this year, boston federal reserve president susan collins, chicago fed president, austin gu goolsbee ad
7:42 am
jeffrey schmidt. i would like to know if they're going to be a little more guarded when it comes to their expectations because frankly, dennis, i mean, the fact that the market was expecting seven cuts this year and the fact that the market was expecting what it was expecting last year, how does the fed come up with these ideas to message out to the market so we're hanging on every word that they keep to the expectations that they set in the first place? >> well, it's very frustrating, i know, for those of you in the journalism profession and certainly for the public in general, because it's 19 voices, only one of which really speaks for the committee and that's chair powell. the rest of the people basically provide their own opinions and those opinions may or may not translate into policy at the end of the day. so you end up with really a lot
7:43 am
of diverse opinions out there and it's hard to draw conclusions. you mentioned the new voters. let me just say, maria, that in my experience which is dated now but was 10 years around the table, sometimes people will make very strong arguments but they will not decide that it's enough to dissent and even then i think chair powell will be perfectly happy with one or two dissents, that's the nature of the process, but i'm not sure that these new voters are going to somehow change the course of fed decision making. maria: okay. and what are you expecting from the economy? i mean, president trump is going full steam ahead with his agenda. he's delivering on what he promised on the campaign trail. but he's expecting to do a lot more. now, i'll tell you this. there are analysts who do not expect that 25% tariff on canada
7:44 am
and mexico to go into effect this saturday but that's what president trump told us to expect, that he's going to put 25% tariffs on saturday with canada and mexico. the analysts at cowen think there will be a stay until marca threat. colombia got in line, didn't it, when trump said you're going to see 25% tariffs and then it's going to go up to 50% in a week but more than that, dennis, president trump is also wanting to tap into the capacity of energy in america and that certainly will trigger growth and job creation. what are your thoughts on the macro story in the face of all of this? >> i'm of two minds. i would say a base case just judging from how the economy is performing is that it will continue to perform well. we'll see probably gradual disinflation and the labor market will stay very solid. that's the base case. but the tariffs and to some
7:45 am
