liz: welcome back. more polls show americans say yes, get rid of dei and government. we've got more and more research from the likes of get this , the university of southern california, harvard, canada finds dei is divisive and costs taxpayers potentially billions of dollars. mark meredith is live in washington with more. mark it's a great story what do you got? reporter: liz plenty to dissect here getting the president's order to remove government employees tied to dei is generating praise and pushback. today we heard from the administration's new press secretary defending efforts to defund these programs nationwide. >> so what does this pause mean? it means no more funding for illegal dei programs. it means no more funding for the green new scam that has cost american taxpayers tens of billions of dollars and no more funding for transgenderism and wokeness across our federal bureaucracy and agencies. reporter: the newly-sworn in

defense secretary pete hegseth says killing dei matters and also one of his top priorities. he posted about it on social media writing dod does not equal dei and those who did not comply will no longer work for the department of defense. over at the va, department of veterans affairs officials say nearly 60 employees are on paid leave and the department estimates it'll save $8 million in salaries and also looking at outside contracts to see what else could be cut. conservatives on capitol hill say ending dei makes sense but government unions are furious over these changes and vowing to mobilize members within days to fight back what is an assault on federal employees. the american federation of government employees says ultimately, these attacks on dei are just a smoke screen for firing civil servants, undermining the apolitical civil service and turning the federal government into an army of yes men loyal only to the president and not the constitution. liz, government agencies have until the end of this week, this friday, to submit plans for formally dismissing all dei
