7:01 am
tomorrow. and repeat of the blood bath that we saw last week. fox senior business correspondent brenda buttner. we hear that ennuis decreal the stocks are down 5% could that happen here tomorrow morning when wall street opens? >> that is significant. because this is first real tell we've had since s&p 500 downgraded our debt in an historic fall for the united states. but israel is important because there are many tech stocks that americans are very interested in. but a couple of things, first of all it was s&p 500 only that downgraded the -- our debt. and it looks like people are actually may be rushing to safety which is just the opposite of what you might think.
7:02 am
so it's hard to say. anybody who says that they know what's going to happen tomorrow doesn't know, period. because we've got people rushing to treasuries. which brings interest rates down, traditional low we think that interest rates would go up after this. because when your credit rating goes down, you pay more for money. so, it's really hard to know at this juncture exactly what is going to happen. some stocks are cheaper, some people may jump in. warren buffet says we should have quadruple rating and he was one of the ones along with peter lynch who in past blood baths in the world war kit jumped in. how i wouldn't jump in before him or be the first one in there but if there is a midge or invest or who says, there's bargains in here, maybe there are. >> look about eight hours from now the markets in asia will
7:03 am
open if you are going down in the middle east it could be going down in asia before the opening bell tomorrow morning. the s&p 500 which struck me there was lack of a long term plan to reduce the debt. they call it political gridlock so why won't washington come up with a long term plan unless they get one it seems they're on this roller coaster ride. >> well, that's a great question, eric, you should be down there on the congressionaller from. because those are the questions that should be answered. the thing that bothered s&p 500 so much was not just the amount of debt. but the way that we were dealing with it. a committee? a joint committee again? what is that going to do. how many committees have we had to deal with the debt and nothing has come of it. and that's the real concern. first of all there was not enough debt that was sheered from the budget and second of all, that the answer was, put a
7:04 am
whole bunch of these guys in a room and they will come up with something. well they have been trying do that for awhile. also very interesting that this is used as a threat by the administration that if we get a downgrade, unless we get a deal we'll get a downgrade. we got a deal. we got a downgrade. who knows at this point. >> the s&p 500 is still threatened to downgrade even more they want four trillion cut, the politicians in washington only cut two trillion. >> remember, two of the big rating agencies, mood de's and fitch have not. they reaffirmed their support for the u.s. >> keep in mind the s&p 500 is only one we'll see if mood des follows. broken darks good to talk to you, keeping an eye on this. >> okay, thank you. >> lot more including financial leaders from the group of seven leading economies, they're holding a conference call tomorrow morning they will discuss the stability of the
7:05 am
global financial system in the wake of the u.s. downgrade. that's according to reports outgave pan. the call would come ahead of the opening of markets in asia and the fear of course is that the downgrade of the u.s. credit rating will send ripple effects throughout other economies. leaders taking part in the call will also discuss the debt crisis in europe. >> what exactly these ratings mean, triple-a, double-a all this. let's take look how standard and poor's defines it. the highest rating triple-a, the borrower has he can tremendously strong capacity to meet financial commitments. the s&p 500 or given it to us since 1917. they stripped it from us on friday. one notch down is double-a. suggests a very strong capacity to pay back money. next up is single a, those borrowers have strong capacity to meet financial obligations
7:06 am
but more vulnerable to changing economic conditions. then triple-b is considered the lowest grade suitable for investors and for the record. the worst you can get is a d, that signifies potential financial default. >> one of the first casualties of the standard and poor's credit downgrade, it could be treasury secretary timoney geithner. a growing number of republicans and they're saying he must go. will he get the boot. bob is managing editor of "the harold" good morning. >> how are you? >> the majority leader. i'm great. i'm curious how timothy geithner is doing right now because majority speaker boehner, he wants him to go he's been very vocal then san for jim demin said that treasury secretary geithner if he doesn't resign basically his opposition to serious spending and debt reform has been reckless. how big a risk if geithner stays? >> i think that he's under a lot of pressure.
7:07 am
liberals have not liked geithner they were trying to get him out last year. and speaker john boehner also called for his resignation last year, reiterate that yesterday. now growing chorus of it. geithner the reports have been mixed that he's thinking about going. but he is actually out last add lot of obama's other economic advisors including chris nina romar and others. who is left. who would replace him. the nomination process could be very messy. geithner has been a bit too optimistic about the economy. the administration thought the economy would be better, remember the recovery summer last year this they talked about. it has not panned out as well as administration has thought. geithner is one of the managers, new he's taken the heat and lot of analyst think that's fair. >> he's taking heat but pinning the finger at congress. he hasn't taken responsibility. in fact he told fox business awhile back when he was asked whether or not there would be downgrade. whether we keep our triple-a rating he said, quote,
7:08 am
absolutely. what now? >> that's right. that's the judgment that lawmakers are questioning now to put out those statements for this to lap, the treasury department was talking to s&p 500 and other credit rating agencies to lobby them not to downgrade the u.s. credit rating. he does want reform, these been frustrated by the commissions but both members on liberal side and conservative side are very frustrated with him. remains to be seen whether he will lead. but at the same time if he leaves now looks like he will be pushed out and president obama and public statements over last couple years has been very supportive of geithner. i think that will continue this week. that's within to watch this week. >> he's been called to leave before after the 2008 financial crisis if i recall and also they appointed to the investigation that went on after the aig bail out. if congress, both sides of the
7:09 am
aisle does not look to him to take full responsibility, partial resystemsability even some responsibility what could be the fall out for them come 2012. >> i also think a political fall out for president obama if geithner is a liability and awhile back it looked like he was going to leave, he was under a lot of pressure to leave. obama chose, i'm going to support my treasury secretary. i think that he's probably going to go to bat for him again. but at the same time if there's more and more members, bum beat continues then obama will have to make a decision with this stock market also this week, if it plunges again in the wake of this downgrade that geithner did not think would happen. i think there's going to be a lot of finger pointing. washington is very good at that that's not going to stop any time soon. >> you're right about that. i appreciate your insights today. good to see you. have a great day. >> thanks. >> new developments out of afghanistan this morning. that after the u.s. military

suffered its single biggest loss of the war there. at least 30 u.s. troops were killed after their helicopter crashed in eastern cavs, it was apparently shot out of the sky by the taliban. most of those killed, navy seals who were part of seal team six the unit that carried out the raid killing osama bin laden but it's believed that none of the seals actually took part were killed in the tragic crash. the hearts and prayers of our nation are with the victims and their families, there is no let up on the ground there. right now there is intense fighting breaking out in the same area where that chopper went down. conor powell streaming latest with the very latest. >> good morning. there were operations to recover this downed chinook helicopter is underway. talking to the military they stay is process that could likely take several days because of the fighting, because of the remoteness of the area, this is a difficult area where the taliban have real strong

mechanical problem. one of the big unanswered questions was, why were there so many navy seals and special operation forces on one single helicopter, according to military officials it is very rare that they pile that many special operations troops on one single helicopter for the very reason that it could get shot down or could crash and lose so many in one accident. that's one of the big questions that's being asked right now but this is a devastating day and weekend for the u.s. special operations forces here in afghanistan. >> that it is. our hearts and prayers as we said are with victims and their families. and just shows exactly the threats and dangers that we face there every day. thank you. we are learning, new details about some of the lives of the heroic navy seals that were killed yesterday. one of those seals is aaron carson vaughn, he's from tennessee. he had asked the military to return him to combat, he just shipped out six weeks ago. he was also a proud new father

7:15 am
>> i think the united states should have been long ago but at least now should be much clearer that its objective is over throwing the regime. we should pull our ambassador out, recognize the government do with we can in financial terms to aid the opposition. i think the reason that the obama administration has not done that is heavy involvement of iran in supporting the hassad regime. and obama administration more than anything else at this point does not want to do something that will interfere with the possibility of negotiation with tehran over its nuclear program as absurd as that may seem. >> you talk about negotiating the nuclear program. look what they tried so far. you got four u.n. resolutions, where has that gotten us? >> this is a good example of i think the failure of much of the

administration's foreign policy, notion that you just sit down at a table and people are reasonable, everything gets worked out. ask the 1600 to 2,000 people innocent civilians dead in syria now while administration hesitated, faltered so-called hassad reformer. this is a very serious situation for iran and it's one reason why they're prepared to shed a lot of syrian blood to keep the regime in power. they want that satellite regime there, they want the control overseer i can't. they want the control they have through the terrorist group hezbollah and lebanon. and i don't see that changing without a major shift by the united states hopefully by the europeans as well. >> you don't see that major shift coming apparently. why would they be afraid to step on tehran's toes, some would say, that would give them hard line message and police to start is damascus. >> exactly. while we're on the subject i think our policy ought to be overthrow the regime in tehran,
7:17 am
too. but the administration knows that if it takes on iran directly it can probably kiss goodbye forever the possibility of that open hand from iran that president obama sought in his inaugural address back in 2009. i think that is what has inhibited the administration more than anything else. i think it was a mistake to begin with or be inhibited now. the sooner we junk that idea the better off we'd be. the better chance we would have and syrian opposition would have in over throwing hassad. >> do you think they will stay or go? >> i'd have to bet at this point he'll stay. there's no evidence yet that the syrian military has begun to fragment or turn against hassad i think that's a possibility given complex internal politics of sear california but atelier's as far as i can tell there's no evidence yet military has begun to break. >> all right. u.s. ambassador with his prediction. always good to see you.
