9:10 pm
i say, i'm not willing to keep government growing. i'm insistent that we cap the amount of government spending as a percentage of the total economy and balance our budget. those are principles that are critical. i'm going to fight for those things. if i'm president of the united states and if we have republicans in both houses and majority in both houses, you are going to see us finally draw a line on the growth of government. we cannot go on with government borrowing more and more and eating more and more into the future of america's economic vitality. i'm not going to allow that. >> sean: i want to pick that up and maybe get to some specifics. where you would cut if you had the opportunity. we'll have much more with governor romney after the break. plus, as economic uncertainty flares around the world, riots turn deadly in the u.k. what is motivating the violence? >> join us here tomorrow night for the republican primary debate from ames, iowa i'll be

on stage the republican primary debate happening here 9:00 eastern in ames, iowa. did you notice the president going after big business, big corporations, bill oil, people that create jobs and produce products and corporate jet owners. he's going to jet out to martha's vineyard one of the most expensive vacation spots in the country and spend 10 days in the middle of this financial collapse. your reaction? he's also going to be on a bus tour through -- he's also going to be on a bus tour through michigan and iowa this country is in crisis now. a lot of people fearful about the future. the stock market has been turbulent. the s&p downgrade says that america's credit is not worth what it was worth over our history. and the president ought to be in washington. i know everybody deserves a vacation.
9:16 pm
but this is a time of crisis. the president should be in washington working to get this economy going. he should begin by admitting that a lot of things have not worked. he should reverse course on something like obamacare. it is going to cost the american people a trillion over this decade and more down the road. it has to be eliminated. >> sean: let me ask you about the downgrade. s&p warned this would happen unless they had a deal that saved four trillion. i don't care go it was cut, cap and balance, that would have prevented the downgrade. they said there was a better than 50% chance this would happen. now there's going to be a banking committee investigation into this. how bad is this, when america -- this has not happened since 1917, never happened before in history. then they blame the tea party whose plans they call them terrorists, would have prevented the downgrade. what is your reaction to all
9:17 pm
of that? >> no question that the people in this country that are concerned about the growth of government had they been able to have their way in washington, we would not had seen an s&p done grade. if people like myself had -- had said we go to cut, cap, have a balanced budget. if we were to be successful in that kind of policy. had john mccain or i had been president, we would have been able to put forward a plan that convinced people around the world that we are credit worthy. frankly, washington under president obama has not had the leadership it needs to deal with our economic woes. frankly, to deal with our woes at the governmental level. it doesn't make sense to continue to spend massively more than we take in as a nation. >> sean: we have going around the world right now in london, u.k., spain, portugal, greece, israel, there's a demand for more government and entitlement mentality has taken over. it seems that this ought to be

a warning to america that while we are headed down this road, this may be our future. when you look at what is happening in these countries, do you think we could turn on this program or fox news and find out it is happening around the world -- i mean happening here in america is happening around the world? >> it breaks your heart to see it happening around the world. to know that homes, businesses and livelihoods and lives are being lost in the u.k., hooligans and demonstrators and protesters, and thugs, it is an outrage. at a time like this you hope for a stable leadership and parents at home teaching their kids. you are right, we've created an entitlement mentality that government is going to take care of us that is not the reality. the reality is the people of america take care of ourselves. we belief if personal responsibility. this view that we should have government start running our lives, tell us what we can do, what kind of health care, how much of our money we coop.
9:19 pm
that leads to the kind of violence and entitlement mentality that i think is at the root of a lot of people's frustrations today. >> sean: when i look at this video, i'm thinking this is america's future, if we don't get a hold of -- a lot of this is about, in a lot of these countries, about necessary austerity measures after they spent too much. america is has spent -- we have a 1.65 trillion dollar deficit this year, we pen too much. at some point we have to have the same austerity measures. why would we think we would have any different result than these others countries? >> we could have of course have pockets of people who respond in ways that are reprehensible. but by and large the american people are a very patriotic people. as long as you have leaders that will tell the truth and lead with integrity and who now how to lead america in integrity and convincingly describe a position and vision for america of greatness, then
