up with the candidates from your home state? i thought minnesota nice was a law if your state. last night, it was revoked obviously and it had michelle bachmann and tim pawlenty spending much of the evening going at each other. here is yet one small example of that exchange. have a listen. >> she says that she's fighting for these things. she fought for less government spending. we got a lot more. she led the effort against obama care. we got obama care. she led the effort against tarp. we got tarp. she said she's got a titanium spine, it's not her spine we're worried about, it's her record of results. if that's your view of effective leadership with results, please stop because you're killing us. >> wait. >> you were governor in minnesota, you implemented cap and trade in our state. and you praised the unconstitutional individual mandates and you called for requiring all people in our state to purchase health insurance that government would mandate. third, you said the era of small government was over.

that sounds a lot more like barack obama if you ask me. >> and that was just one of kind of the exchanges that went on throughout the debate between michelle bachmann and tim pawlenty. a lot of -- a lot riding on last night's debate for those two candidates in particular because they're heading into tomorrow, the straw poll which is a measurement of just how well they're doing here in iowa in terms of being able to be an organization. so that keys up what happens in the straw poll. we know there were a lot of iowans, especially the g.o.p. activists that were watching. >> steve, the interesting thing about the straw poll is the presumptive frontrunner, mitt romney not even taking part in it tomorrow. how did he do yesterday? >> that's -- by all accounts, it seems like he did pretty well. tried to stay above the fray and kind of stay with the kind of campaign that he is running which is a national campaign as a frontrunner and yes, he's not playing in the iowa straw poll but he was here last night and here's a bit of what he had to say.

>> i was fortunate enough to be a governor that got an increase in the credit rating in my state. at the same time, we got a president who got a decrease in the credit rating of our nation and that's because our president simply doesn't understand how to lead and how to grow an economy. >> and that's the long suit for mitt romney because of his business experience, he has been playing that up and because the economy is such a huge issue in this particular campaign in particular job creation, that this is something that he can talk about from first-hand experience and it clearly is something that, you know, he wanted to put front and center on the national debate last night. you remarked, steve, he's not going to be playing here at the straw poll but he has been maintaining contact with his -- his supporters here from the 2008 campaign with telephone town halls and what have you and we suspect that he's going to get a pretty good number of votes here on saturday. >> see how it all pans out, steve brown, and by the way, don't think it's by accident they put michelle bachmann and

tim pawlenty next to each other, do you? >> of course. >> complete coincidence! >> it made it all the better entertainment, good to see you, steve. see you again next hour. >> you notice the candidates when they get that nervous moment, they don't know how to respond and they're getting attacked like, that they grab the pen and start to jot down -- they start to jot down. like they're jotting down their retort immediately. >> that's what tim pawlenty was doing as he was getting some barbs from michelle bachmann fired back. this certainly jolted this race back to life. remember the last debate was kind of quiet and this brought some energy back. it felt like this was the first official moment of the 2012 race. >> they're off because how many times have we heard that unless somebody does really well tomorrow in the straw poll, they could be out by monday. now, if you missed it last night on fox, the questions were hard. the answers were great. there were some soundbites we wanted to play for you this morning. here's a little sampling of what went on last night in iowa. >> look, i'm not going to eat

barack obama's dog food, all right? what he served up isn't what i would have done if i was president of the united states. >> if you can find barack obama's specific plan on any of those items, i will come to your house and cook you dinner. >> if you prefer, i'll come to your house and mow your lawn. >> america, america's got to learn how to take a joke. >> i'd love to see the rest of tonight's debate asking us about what we would do to lead an america whose president has failed to lead instead of playing mickey mouse games. >> and newt gingrich also accused some of the questioners of asking mickey mouse questions actually which we'll get to a little bit later on. it was fiery. who was missing from the stage? well, a candidate who is about to get into the race, the governor of texas, rick perry. apparently, he will announce tomorrow in south carolina. and then he will be going to iowa on sunday even though he will also not be part of the straw poll there. but the interesting thing is you can write in somebody in the straw poll.

it will be interesting to see if once perry announces on saturday, tomorrow, officially if he gets any write-in votes. a lot of people offended by the fact that he is doing this at the same time that the straw poll is happening. >> and remember, bret baier during the debate asked the candidates did he outsmart all of you by sitting out of iowa and not being a part of it. governor huckabee who is one of those write-in candidates is actually showing up on the ames straw poll. he's not in but has been written in. he came out in criticism of governor perry saying it's a mistake. it's a tactical mistake for him not to be in iowa but certainly his name was right on the top of everyone's mind last night during the debate. >> we'll have lots more coverage of what went down in iowa last night throughout the program. in the meantime, let's talk a little bit about this. yesterday, another up day on wall street. that's a good thing. we're still way down for the month and for the year as well and because there's so much turmoil in the economy, it has been suggested that the president of the united states not go on vacation.

there are a number of european leaders who have either canceled or delayed their vacations. jay carney was asked about it yesterday and he said, you know what? there is no such thing as a presidential vacation because of communications and everything like that, he's always at the job. listen to this. >> i don't think americans out there would begrudge that notion that the president would spend some time with his family. it is also, i think, as anyone who has covered it in the past even in this administration or others, there's no such thing as a presidential vacation, the presidency travels with you. >> so he's supportive of the vacation. >> yeah, i mean, i think to a certain extent that's true. i mean, come on, two things. all presidents need to have a vacation. it's the most stressful job in the vacation. i don't think anyone is going to say you can't go on vacation depending on what kind of crisis is happening at a particular time so jay carney apparently had a different frame of mind or point of view about presidents taking vacation in 2001 when he

was a writer for "time" magazine. here's part of an article he wrote about president bush at that time. as part of the effort to convince the public he wasn't on vacation in the generally accepted sense of what the word means, i.e. having fun and not working so he was taking a shot at president bush back then for going on vacation out to crawford, texas. >> and his argument was then that president bush would be brought out and criticized for meeting with americans. that he would be at crawford most of the time on vacation and then carney criticized the then bush administration for bringing him out and having meetings with americans like one day having them like sort of rub elbows and go to crawford. >> exactly. while the president was -- president bush was taking his long vacation down in texas, his handlers, mr. carney said, would invent some photo op once a week to get him somewhere over at habitat for humanity, building a house over in waco or out in colorado. and you're exactly right, clayton. back then, in "time" magazine, he wrote that the handlers would have him at a photo op with

regular americans to make it seem like he's engaged. where was the president of the united states? the current one yesterday? at a photo op with real americans looking engaged. >> and then at a fundraiser last night. >> couple of headlines for your friday now. markets are reacting to the surge on wall street. trading looked good with markets getting off to a fast start. those early gains were wiped away by the closing bell. the nikkei fell .2% and south korea was down 1.3%. all this indicating dow futures will likely open lower today. british police say they've arrested more than 1500 people for those deadly riots including more than 1,000 in london alone. about 600 of those people have already been charged and courts are staying open to late process all of these cases. the riots, though, have calmed down quite a bit. but prime minister david cameron says he will leave extra police on the streets throughout the weekend. the riots left at least five

people dead and costs thousands of dollars in property damage. they're credited with nabbing three of the country's most wanted fugitives. now the colorado state troopers who chased down the so-called doherty gang are describing what it's like to get shot at at 120 miles per hour. >> you don't think about the fear, i mean, you know, it's natural for you to not like to be shot at but the training really kicks in and it's almost like a muscle memory response. you don't think about it. you think about what you're supposed to do. >> the siblings eventually crashed but the stand-off didn't end there. one of the officers shot lee grace doherty in the leg as she tried to fire a pistol at him. now in new court documents, she admits she deserves to get shot. she looks happy to be in court there. i'm not sure why. verizon winning a big court decision that will prevent strikers now from blocking their stores. a judge issued an injunction in new york, delaware and pennsylvania with new jersey and massachusetts possibly next on the list. and now the f.b.i. is

investigating whether strikers are engaging in sabotage. verizon says wires are being cut at homes and offices shutting off phones and the internet. and those are your headlines. >> i have a little problem a couple of days ago. sabotage? >> could be. >> maybe. >> straight ahead, families of our fallen navy seals begged the pentagon, let us grieve in private. so did the president overstep his bounds by bringing a cameron crew? a white house cameraman took that shot to the memorial. was this picture worth it? a lieutenant general and military expert weighs in on the other side of the time-out. >> a bull has something else in mind. he made a break from the butcher straight down the street in new york city. why don't we see one of the bulls escape in new york city once a year? >> i want to see a bull and bear together. are recovering at a san diego naval hospital. at least one of them had serious injuries including a broken arm and broken leg. they were floating in the sea for four hours before they were discovered. no word on the cause of the crash. >> meanwhile, it was supposed to be a private ceremony to mark the return of 30 american troops killed in last weekend's chopper crash in afghanistan, actually an attack on the chopper. but to the surprise of the pentagon, and the victims' families, a white house photographer snapped this picture of president obama in silhouette. you can see him screen right at the event. this despite the request of 19 of the families asking for no media coverage at all. 19 families said don't -- don't release anything. but the white house did. did they violate the families' wishes? joining us is the white house

military analyst, good morning to you, general. >> good morning to you, steve. how are you? >> doing ok. a little troubled by. this families made it clear, 19 of the 30, we don't want any coverage. this is a private event and yet the white house releases this image of the president, the commander in chief. what do you think? >> of a lot of problems with it. first of all, let me say, it's great that the president went up there. i give him great credit for it. but i think he violated the protocols of the event. he didn't need to have that picture released. none of the other service chiefs that were up there or vice chiefs did. and when 19 families asked you not to do it, then he should have observed those. he is the commander in chief. and everybody would know, the media would clearly give him great credit for being there so i have problems with it. >> all right. let's listen, general, to jay carney talking about this photo flap. >> the reason why we were able to release a photo is it was

carefully done so that none of the transport cases that contained remains were in the picture. it's also the case because of the units that were involved, there were members of classified units whose identities cannot be revealed publicly who are in this ceremony, and we knew -- think cannot be shown in the photograph. >> so there you've got the white house saying look, the pictures were ok because we didn't show any of the -- any of the cases that contained the human remains in it. you can just see the president and leon panetta there and a couple of other silhouettes as well. do you buy that? >> i don't buy it. he's parsing. look, the president -- that picture that you just saw that did not have to be there, it is a matter of class and observing what the parents wanted and relatives wanted and so i didn't like carney's response on it. it was a lame response. and i think, again, the president should observe the

solemnity of the event and there were no pictures required. he'd get lots of media coverage other ways than what he had there. >> general, is the white house politicizing this? >> look, they have pounded that football into the ground when they captured usama bin laden almost continuously with the movie coming out and all these things, they continue to spike the ball. they politicized this event when they didn't have to. as i say, i give him great credit, steve, for being there. i think it was marvelous that he changed his schedule that day and he went up there. i give him great credit for it. he didn't have to do this. >> all right. general tom mcerneney joining us from the bureau. >> thanks, steve. >> what do you think about photo being released by the white house? e-mail us, friends at foxnews.com. meanwhile, you heard of prisoners breaking out of prison. what was this guy doing, the ex-prisoner who tried to break

exclusively, though, that perry will formally announce his bid for the presidency tomorrow in south carolina. but college students across the country, they've been calling on him to run for quite a while. >> we're somewhere between a soft and a double dip. >> shovel ready is not as shovel ready as we think. >> joseph noles is the co-chair of students for perry and they put together that ad. good morning to you, joseph. >> good morning, gretchen. how are you doing? >> wow, it seems like a well put together organized group that you have going. you've been doing this for 2 1/2 months and rick perry hasn't even announced yet. why? >> we've been doing this for 2 1/2 months because we wanted a principled conservative in the

race who would deliver the best contrast to president obama in the general election. and i believe strongly that if you put president obama's record side by side with rick perry's, there's just no comparison. for instance, let's just look at the deficit. barack obama this year alone has given us a $1.5 trillion deficit for the first time in our history, the gdp and our national debt had crossed each other completely. it's absolutely absurd. >> now, i understand that you have 700 members so far in this organization. 30 state chairs. let me ask you this. the sort of presumptive thought last time around was most college kids would vote for barack obama and actually did. what are you going to do to change the mindset to what you're trying to accomplish? >> i think honestly, gretchen, that the mind set is already changed because people really believed in the hope and change that barack obama was offering. but those promises really aren't working out for people. people want jobs and that's why they're going to like rick perry

because he has the best jobs record for anyone running for president. >> you agree college students still at school will feel that way because a lot of studies and polls have shown that once college kids who did vote for barack obama got out in the real world and had a tough time getting a job, that's when some of them changed their mind but you believe even kids on campuses will feel differently this time around. >> i think so. because i think that the fiscal issues and the job market are really coming to the forefront in this election. i think that's what people will be caring about. >> now, why rick perry in your mind as opposed to michelle bachmann? tim pawlenty, mitt romney, etc.? >> well, i respect all of them. i think that the distinctions have to be made. i think that mitt romney is going to have some trouble in the primary to be perfectly honest because he passed a health care plan in massachusetts that's very similar to the obama care bill. tim pawlenty lacks the enthusiasm that many people are out there looking for and he once supported cap and trade and

right after the debate hannity's show looked more like he was attacking for political reasons, that they thought it hurt him in the end and michelle bachmann came out on top in that back and forth. >> on the other side is the des moines register, the paper of record for the state of iowa and they write today, pawlenty bests bachmann in pointed debate exchange. if tonight's debate were a state fair entree, tim pawlenty dined on red meat and michelle bachmann got the stick. they gave republicans a lot to chew on before saturday's straw poll. >> lot of food references. >> that's why life is subjective, right? i mean, the same three people right here can hear a debate and we can all say we thought three different people did the best job. >> right. who do you think, if you watched it last night and it was -- i'll tell you, two hours of riveting television right here on fox, what do you think? who won? e-mail us, friends at foxnews.com. in the meantime, mitt romney was out, i believe, at the iowa state fair earlier probably having some chocolate fried

on line. he is refusing to cooperate with the police and that is not good. >> olympic career on a slippery slope thanks to a disturbing incident on a jet blue plane. he was drunk when he relieved himself on a sleeping 11-year-old girl on a flight from oregon -- >> are you kidding me? >> i saw this headline last night. she got in a confrontation with the girl's father that is battling cancer. prosecutors say they won't press charges but he could be in danger of losing a spot on the olympic steam. he was bumped from the developmental roster. >> apparently he had eight drinks before he got on the airplane and he's refusing to apologize which makes the whole thing a little bit worse. woman accused of robbing the jeopardy host says it's a big mix-up. she was actually working as a prostitute and was there to meet a client who was not trebek by the way when the client didn't show. she also claims she never

entered his room. he tore his achilles while chasing her down the hall. >> that's a much better story. meanwhile, you heard of inmates breaking out of prison but what about breaking in? it's a story that would have johnny cash very confused. >> ♪ and i ain't seen the sunshine since i don't know when i'm stuck in folsom prison and time keeps dragging on ♪ >> yeah, there's the man in black singing about blues about sacramento's folsom prison. this guy apparently does not agree. former inmate was busted trying to sneak back into the prison. he says he was just reminiscing but police suspect he may have been trying to sneak contraband into his old buddies. >> brilliant. >> from breaking into jail to breaking out of the slaughterhouse, you're looking at a bull running amok down the streets of new york city. eventually it was reigned in on a college campus and sent back to the slaughterhouse trying to

get your response. >> in 2006, when you were running for congress, you described a moment in your life when your husband said you should study for a degree in tax law. you said you hated the idea. and then you explained "but the lord said, be submissive. wives, you are to be submissive to your husbands." as president, would you be submissive to your husband? >> thank you for that question. byron. >> you're welcome. >> marcus and i will be married for 33 years this september 10th. i'm in love with him. i'm so proud of him. and both he and i, what submission means to us, if that's what your question is, it means respect. i respect my husband. >> so byron, the question that lit up on twitter, why did he ask that question? and were you surprised by the boos that you got behind you? >> well, it's always great to be the most popular guy in the room for a while. this is a serious and legitimate

question about something she has said and believe me, if she progresses very far in the campaign process, she would have been asked this question. and i personally thought she handled it very well. it was like a very human moment for her. she had been asked earlier about it by "newsweek", she said simply, i'll be the decision maker. but this, i think, gave us a much better glimpse into michelle bachmann. >> there was a lot of points being made fast and furiously last night on twitter. lot of viewers saying different things about the questions that were being asked. among them, that a lot of the questions coming from you guys were not necessarily gotcha questions but, in fact, were keeping these candidates on their toes. other people called them gotcha questions including newt gingrich and chris wallace. take a listen to this exchange. >> how do you respond to people who say that your campaign has been a mess so far? >> let me say first of all, chris, that i took seriously bret's injunction to put aside the talking points and i wish

if you will, and probably featured center stage in the center of the stage, michelle bachmann and tim pawlenty. they went back and forth at it quite a bit including this exchange about taxes, whether a cigarette -- a cigarette tax increase was a fee or a tax, necessary or unnecessary, have a listen. >> when the deal was put together, governor pawlenty cut a deal with the special interest groups and he put in the same bill a vote to increase the cigarette tax as well as the vote that would take away protections from the unborn. and i made a decision, i believe in the sanctity of human life and i believe you can get money wrong but you can't get life wrong. >> and the answer is the answer. congresswoman bachmann didn't vote for that bill because of it stripping away a pro life protection, she voted for it as creating that as the excuse but nonetheless, she speaks of

leading these efforts in washington and minnesota, leading and failing is not the objective. >> now, if you're wondering why it is that these two from minnesota who were allies for, you know, on so many issues for so many years, it basically comes down to this. we've got a straw poll coming up here on saturday. and both of these folks are competing and essentially the competition is -- is there an alternative to the national front rrunner who is mitt romne and who might that alternative be? these two are fighting it out to figure out who that's going to be. if you're wondering why it's so tight, that's why and that was evidenced last night. they are very -- very sharp competitors in that vain. >> all right. steve brown live for us from ames and he'll be joining us tomorrow morning as we preview the straw poll tomorrow. steve will be joining us on "fox & friends" because the all important straw poll that so many people are putting value and weight on at the beginning

pawlenty thing before he got to the joke part where he was talking about i'll come to your yard, i'll come to your house and mow your yard unless it's you because i'll only do one acre and, you know, suddenly there's a lot of laughter and chris wallace asked mr. romney if he'd like to respond. no, that's ok. he had a big smile on his face. take the joke. >> one of the other names that was brought up and one of the candidates who was missing from the stage apart from michelle bachmann not showing up after one of the commercial breaks and bret baier asking, we're missing a candidate. there was a candidate missing and empty podium in the middle. she made it back on stage and handled it with grace and there was one candidate who was not there who is set to announce, of course, tomorrow in south carolina. that is texas governor rick perry. his name was sort of hovering above the debate the entire night. and bret baier asked the candidates, did he outsmart all of you by basically avoiding iowa? >> it's interesting. some people think he's made a mistake. notable people like governor huckabee who won the iowa straw poll the last time around and did very well in iowa.

he said to use his words, it was a dis to iowans to announce your campaign right before the straw poll but not technically take part in it and not take part in the debate last night. what do you think about that? do you think it's a good move that perry is going to get into it and did he steal some of the attention last night without being there? was it a good strategy? let us know what you think. >> yeah, apparently, by the way, rick perry has already emblazened a jet airplane with the words "rick perry for america". it apparently is prepositioned somewhere in south carolina for the big announcement tomorrow. >> also, there was a big announcement this week, nancy pelosi and on the senate side, mitch mcconnell picking their choices for the super committee. we know the names that will be a part of the super committee. there they are. 12 members and last night, newt beginning was asked about the super committee and here's what he had to say about it. take a listen. >> i think this super committee is about as dumb an idea as washington has come up with in

my lifetime. i mean, if you will for a second, i used to run the house of representatives. i have some general notion of these things. the idea that 523 senators and congressmen are going to sit around for four months while 12 brilliant people, mostly picked for political reasons, are going to sit in some room and brilliantly come up with a trillion dollars or force us to choose between gutting our military and accepting a tax increase is irrational. they're going to walk in just before thanksgiving and saying all right, we can shoot you in the head or cut off your right leg. which do you prefer? >> that was a fiery answer. many of our e-mailers think that newt gingrich won the debate last night rather than being a little testy in the process. >> our own frank luntz thought that gingrich came out and won this battle. who pulled it out last night? >> now the rest of the headlines for the friday, markets across the world are reacting to yesterday's 423 point surge on wall street. news from europe is good.

frankfurt up 1.9% and paris up 1.2% but the news is not as good in asia. japan's nikkei fell .2% and hong kong gained .1%. british police say they've arrested more than 1500 people for those deadly riots including more than 1,000 in london alone. 600 people of those have already been charged and courts are staying open to late process all of these cases. the riots, though, luckily have calmed down a bit but prime minister david cameron says he will leave extra police on the streets throughout the weekend. riots left at least five people dead and caused thousands of dollars in property damage. a florida family furious after having to pay a $300 fine all because they forgot to declare some product at the airport. produce, that is. product, produce. wait, you're gonna see what it is in a minute. it happened at newark liberty airport in new jersey. custom officials say the family violated a federal crime when they forgot to declare an apple, a tomato and three cucumbers.

the family says it was an oversight and that officials totally overreacted. >> why can't they just ditch them? when you come back into the country, they ask you to sign the forms. have you been around livestock and do you have any fruits or vegetables with you? >> aren't we always around live stock, drove by a farm. >> sorry. i forgot about the cucumber i was carrying. who takes cucumbers on the airplanes? maybe someone wanted to make a salad in mid flight. >> they wanted to make a salad! >> all right. we've been talking on this channel a lot about the fast and furious program which turned out to be a disaster. well, one of the reasons is the fact that a border agent by the name of brian terry was killed by one of the guns that was taken across the border. well, his family has asked the u.s. attorney in arizona to declare them to be crime victims because the family wants to intervene as victims in the case

against the 23-year-old guy from phoenix by the name of jamie avilla, the guy that bought the gun that eventually killed mr. terry and the family wants to be able to give him crime victim's status to be able to speak at the sentencing and the right to confer with the prosecutors but the u.s. attorney says no. you do not get that status which is extraordinary and the former u.s. attorney said it's simply disrespectful. >> it's mystifying to see the fami government to try to deny the family the basic right they're entitled as crime victims. you have to wonder if it's part of a strategy to avoid legal responsibility for some of the tragic mistakes of operation fast and furious. >> and the reason that this is causing such an uproar is because this is a commonly thing -- it's a common occurrence that they do grant this kind of status. we'll keep you posted on all the fallout from fast and furious.

>> welcome back, everyone. it was a night of heavy hitting and fierce debate in iowa. eight g.o.p. presidential candidates let it all fly. who is waking up this morning as the winner? our panel is here to grade the candidates. editor of the national review and fox news contributor rich lowry, author of what to ask the person in the mirror and former communications director for senator jon corzine and democratic strategist, julie raginski. good to see all of you. i'll start with you, rich, you've assembled your grading process here. we did best and worst, best.

>> very complicated grading process there. i thought newt was very good. i think he was much more like the candidate people would thrive in these debates. he was great on the idiotic supercommittee. his question about the campaign falling apart was fair but people liked him sit back at the media and the other strong performer was mitt romney who two debates now hasn't been challenged. is kind of gliding. the worst, i thought was john huntsman. it seemed to me that his voice was actually shaking. he seemed very nervous. he seemed very contrived. i wouldn't have been surprised if he just walked off the stage at some point because he didn't seem to belong there. >> for a minute, we had tim pawlenty up as your worst. your pick was huntsman. >> i thought pawlenty didn't do so well either against bachmann, people -- he is desperate because he thinks bachmann is stealing his thunder in iowa, one, and two, he doesn't like her and i don't think he respects her and he let it show. and i think this is a bad play for him because just average

viewers are out there going to think what does this guy have against this nice lady? >> ok, i got to get on to robert because you actually picked in your mind who you thought was most presidential. and you picked? >> i picked romney and huntsman. despite what rich said and i understand his points but what i'm looking for is someone who can be a leader. can bring things together. can get to solutions. a number of the candidates last night might have been impressive but tend to be advocates for positions and i really think we need a leader who can articulate a plan. >> former vice chair of goldman-sachs, that's what you would come at it from this business perspective. you're saying a leader needs to be more open to all different kind of ideas. who did you think was the most nonpresidential? >> i actually thought rand paul -- >> ron paul. >> for example, and probably honestly herman cain for different reasons. rand paul because he's the extreme of an issue oriented candidate but i don't see him

necessarily as a leader and herman cain did not seem as well versed and he admitted it in a number of issues. >> you're saying rand paul. that's his son. it's ron paul. >> pardon me. >> easy to do. >> that's fair, yes. forgive me. >> julie, surprise us, who did the best? >> you know, i agree with rich that romney did the best by not falling down by fact that he's still the frontrunner today but i thought michelle bachmann was incredible. i was surprised at the fact that she was so well rehearsed, so well coached. this doesn't come across this way. she came across as genuine and came across as sincere and came across as somebody who is very well versed in the issue. >> people are think that's surprising. you're on the democratic side and sometimes liberal women don't love conservative women. >> well, you know, women, men, it doesn't matter to me. i thought she did a great job, whether it's a woman or not. i thought she was incredibly well versed and came across very strongly and i agree with rich that pawlenty going after her without people knowing the history there, without people understanding the bitterness there, he comes across as

done to grow stronger during this economic crisis? back with us now is our political panel. robert, let me start with you. you have worked on wall streetment a l -- a lot of what went on this week was about wall street. what could he have done better? >> avoid blaming others and articulate a clear plan for the future. >> and he did seem to blame repeatedly even yesterday, i want you to listen. he was blaming congress yesterday. >> unfortunately, what we've seen in washington the last few months has been the worst kind of partnership, the worst kind of gridlock and that gridlock has undermined public confidence and impeded our efforts to take the steps we need for our economy. it's made things worse instead of better. >> all right, robert, you believe that the blame game gets him nowhere. >> i do. i think the blame game diminishes him and as president of the united states, people are looking for a vision and a plan

and he's got to be clear on what the road maps are from here. i think that's what the country is looking to him to do. >> why is there no plan? because you're looking now at the lowest approval rating, you know, disapproval, 42%. why would he not come up with the plan? a lot of people have been talking about this for quite sometime. >> i think he has a plan. i think the problem for him is he comes out with a plan, the plan is panned and he starts moving towards his critics' positions and never sticks to his guns. you know, if i were to advise him, one thing i would tell him to do, learn to use the bully pulpit. you're the president. george bush was good at this. learn to stick to your principles and sell them to the american people not you don't have to be reactive to congress or reactive to your critics. you're the president. you have the biggest megaphone in the world. learn how to use what's been given to you instead of reacting what others are saying about you. >> don't delegate so much. >> he's on the tv for a long time, he's trying to use the bully pulpit.

his principles were reflected in the february budget so now he has to pretend he's a deficit hawk so he says he has this $4 trillion plan but won't put it out and spell it out on paper. he knows if he does that and it has real savings on entitlements that i'm skeptical of. if it did, there would be a revolt in his own party. then he's blaming congress and not leading himself. >> i'm going to go through quickly, should he have asked congress to come back this week. >> yes or no? >> no. >> no. >> no. >> the further away congress is from washington the better. >> interesting perspective. thank you so much, panel. have a great weekend. >> thank you. >> coming up, jay carney, the spokesperson for the president claims there's no such thing as a vacation when you're president of the united states. maybe he should which can his own record. we did and the press secretary had a much different take when george w. bush was in office. and then the famous 80's rocker dead this morning.

yesterday, here was another defense. >> i don't think the americans out there would begrudge that notion that the president would spend some time with his family. it is also, i think, as anyone who has covered it in the past, either in this administration or others, there's no such thing as a presidential vacation. the presidency travels with you. >> yeah, ok. well, that's what he says now. now that he's got the job as the president's spokesman. however, back in 2001, while he was writing at "time" magazine and george w. bush was in the white house, he had a big problem with the president taking a big vacation and in fact, he said essentially that his handlers were going to invent a photo op every week to send him out and make him look like he's actually doing stuff. part of the article back in 2001 said as part of their effort to convince the public that he wasn't actually on vacation in the generally accepted sense of what the word means, i.e. not having fun and not working.

>> and to what steve was saying about criticizing president bush, carney did criticize president bush for meeting with real americans outside of washington, basically taking him out. here's an excerpt also from that piece. every week they decided they would send the president somewhere outside texas for a day and a half or so to hold some kind of event in which he would mix with real americans. now, i'm gonna feign shock by the fact that bush is using photo ops in an attempt to influence public opinion. it would be news if he weren't doing that. >> that was then. >> it's a little different apparently when you work for the president and you're trying to defend people asking the question about vacation. yesterday, the president, first he went to michigan to talk about jobs and then he came to new york for two fundraisers and he was asked the question that we just asked the panel, whether or not congress should come back to d.c. to try to work on this debt immediately. here's his response. >> the last thing we need is congress spending more time arguing in d.c. so what i figure is they need to

>> the answer to the trivia question of the day is pete sampras and the winner is dave dowling in florida. congratulations. the debate last night, which of the eight republican hopefuls made strides along that path? pollster frank luntz was there and joins us now with the inside scoop. frank, nice to see you this morning. a lot of eyes, of course, on mitt romney last night. the presumptive frontrunner. how do things shake out? >> well, they shook out well for him. he did exactly what republicans want to see. a plan of action. and he laid it out at the very beginning of the debate.

seven key points. this is what republicans wanted to hear. let's take a look. >> what needs to be done, seven things that come to mind. one is to make sure our corporate tax rates are competitive with other nations and number two is to make sure our regulations and bureaucracy works not just for the bureaucrats in washington but for the businesses that are trying to grow. number three is to have trade policies that work for us and not just for our opponents. number four is to have an energy policy that gets us energy secure. number five is to have the rule of law. six, great institutions that build human capital because capitalism is also about people, not just capital and physical goods. and number seven is to have a government that doesn't spend more money man it takes in. and i'll do it. >> didn't need a teleprompt to her do that with the crowd. that resonates. >> it was. it was a crowd pleaser. it went point by point. each one of the seven items they think barack obama isn't doing. they believe that mitt romney not only wants to do it but he

can do it. i think he was helped the most. second would be the former speaker newt gingrich. he challenged the press in a way no candidate has done. remember, republicans believe that the mainstream media isn't telling the truth. isn't telling the full story. let's take a look at one of his best clips. >> there's too much attention paid by the press corps about the campaign minutia and not enough paid by the press corps that the basic ideas that distinguish us from barack obama. >> big applause line there. i heard you say last night that you thought newt gingrich won the battle. what did you mean? >> he won the battle in terms of audience and i was in the room for most of the debate. and gingrich had the most applause lines of any of the candidates. and he came out of nowhere. and he said what republicans feel. and i felt that mitt romney won the war because in the end, nobody laid a glove on him. and the one that had the greatest swing back and forth

was tim pawlenty. he had the funniest line of the debate. let's play that line. >> where's barack obama's plan on social security reform? medicare reform, medicaid reform? in fact, i'll offer a prize tonight to anybody in this auditorium or anyone watching on television, if you can find barack obama's specific plan on any of those items, i will come to your house and cook you dinner. >> and then, of course, the follow-up line to that was i'll even mow your lawn although if it's mitt romney, i'll only mow one acre. great line. the problem with pawlenty's presentation is that he took on michelle bachmann. he took on romney. he took on other candidates and i know this from my testing, the language that he used was not effective. the key when you're negative is to not sound disagreeable. and he didn't deliver that. it was too much hitting on too many of the candidates. >> did he have the most to lose

because u.s. representative steven king of western iowa republican came out and said pawlenty hurt himself with the attacks on michelle bachmann. he came out on the losing end of this. >> he's a great governor. he's got a great record. but nobody has complained to him how to explain it to republican primary voters so every time he asserts, hey, i got the best record on the stage, the public's response is prove it. and instead what they saw was someone who was almost like an attack dog going after each individual thinking that would give him the advantage. i assure you, it did not. >> bottom line, who won? >> bottom line, mitt romney and newt gingrich were the winners. >> great analysis, as usual. thanks, frank. >> thank you. >> coming up here on the show, our mission in afghanistan is changing. what does that mean for our troops deploying overseas? geraldo rivera joins us live from fort campbell, kentucky at the top of the hour. you've heard of prisoners breaking out of prison. they want to run away.

we saw sides of these candidates we have not seen before on television. >> no. this is probably the most contentious early presidential candidate debate that i can recall. the 11th commandment throned reagan invoked, you shall not speak of a fellow republican shattered last night and largely the folks taking a hammer were the two minnesota candidates, michelle bachman and tim pawlenty. this is a sample of how it went last night. >> she says that she's fighting for these things. she fought for less government spending. we got a lot more. she led the effort against obamacare, we got obamacare. she led the effort against tarp. we got tarp. she said she's got a titanium spine. it's not her spine we're worried about. it's her record of results. if that's your view of effective leadership with results, please stop 'cause you're killing us. >> wait, wait. >> when you were governor in minnesota, you implemented cap and trade in our state, and you praised the unconstitutional

individual mandate and you called for requiring all people in our state to purchase health insurance the government would mandate. third, you said the era of small government was over. that sounds a lot more like barak obama, if you ask me. >> hard to believe these folks were on the same page on a lot of issues before they started running for president. but there is a big event coming up tomorrow, which kind of explains some of this. the straw poll is coming up here, big republican fund-raiser both want to do well and both see each other as their main competitors. another person who probably did himself well or seems to have is newt gingrich. his campaign not going all that well in the last couple of months. but last night when asked about some particular issues, including the super committee for congress to try and figure out where all of these budget cuts are going to come to address the deficit, newt gingrich had a fired up answer loaded and ready. have a listen.

>> the idea that 523 senators in congress are going to sit around for four months while 12 brilliant people, mostly picked for political reasons are going to sit around a room and brillianty come up with an idea or force us to choose between gutting our military or accepting a tax increase is irrational. they're going to walk in before thanksgiving and say, we can shoot you in the head or cut off your right leg, which do you prefer? >> there are a lot of republican watchers acquitted himself very well in that debate. there were also some interesting observations about how mitt romney largely tried to stay above the fray. he's nationally, the front runner. leads head to head against the president in a number of different states. he was the best candidates in a number of different states. kind of wanted to remind folks that he has a business sense, a business background, and jobs, which is the marquee issue. a lot of different takes on last

night's debate, but a heck of a lot of fireworks. back to you in new york. >> steve: no kidding. steve brown, we just had frank luntz on and he said mitt and newt both were the winners last night. peter johnson, jr. is going to be joining us in about 90 seconds to tell us what his view is of the big fight last night right here live from the curvy couch. >> gretchen: markets in europe reacting to yesterday's 420 point surge on wall street. markets are up. london up 1.3%. frankfort up 2.1%. paris up 1.7%. in asia, stocks not fairing as well, though. japan's nikkei fell 2%. hong kong down. south korea down. stock futures are point to go a slow start when the opening bell rings on wall street. british police will be out in force hoping weekend drinking does not reignite those deadly riots. they calmed down quite a bit, but left at least five people dead and caused thousands of

dollars in property damage. at least 1500 people have been arrested around the country, including 1,000 in london alone. london's mayor says those charged should expect significant sentences if convicted. verizon winning a big court decision that will prevent strikers from blocking their stores. a judge issued an injunction in new york, delaware, pennsylvania with new jersey and massachusetts possibly next on the list. now the f.b.i. is investigating whether some of those strikers are actually engaging in sabotage. verizon says wires are being cut at homes and offices, shutting off phones and internet. italian magazine admitting it air brushed a picture of kate middleton to make her look thinner. they at first denied altering the photo when the special royal wedding edition hit news stands. when it did back in may. after a fire storm of complaints from readers, the magazine decided to come clean. still they say it wasn't their intention to make kate look

thinner. they claim the photo was cropped incorrectly. i know a lot of women who would like for them to photo shop them. she doesn't need it. >> steve: geraldo rivera normally right now in this spot, he's out in fort campbell, kentucky. he's going to be with us in a couple of minutes. we're having satellite problems. in the meantime, we turn to peter johnson, jr. there was fireworks last night and we saw sides of the candidates we haven't seen before. >> i think what we saw is that these candidates were ready for prime time. there has been some main stream media criticism that these people aren't qualified, they're not prepared, they don't have a message. there was a diverse breadth of messages we heard last night. people who were all across the country who had conservative positions, somewhat liberal positions at different times, centrist positions. i think there was three winners that emerged. i think mitt romney maintained and retained his leadership position in this race.

at the same time, i thought michelle bachman was extremely strong and standing almost withering attacks, it's not mean spirited almost -- >> steve: it was sharp. >> it was sharp. she's gone through it for the past week in terms of the tea party and some of the sexist attacks we saw on her in terms of the newsweek photo they put up. there was a third winner, though. i was so proud. the third winner was fox news last night. i have never seen such robust, such intense, such pointed questions in any presidential debate in a long, long time. so to see bret baier and chris wallace kind of anger newt gingrich and get a couple of the other candidates unhinged just for a moment with very difficult questions, that, i think, was wonderful. >> steve: i didn't hear a softball all night. >> i was so delighted to see that. so i think the candidates showed they were ready for prime time

and i think that this fair and balanced mantra that a lot of main stream media like to trash was really proven last night. i thought that was terrific. >> clayton: there was highlights in some of the sound bites. mitt romney trying to maintain or at least maybe rise above the entire debate, answering direct questions about president obama's track record and he had this to say and didn't really want to get into a food fight. listen. >> so to be clear and just to be clear here, you echoed congresswoman bachman and congressman paul in being against that final compromise deal. so to phrase it another way, if you were president, you would have vetoed that bill? >> look, i'm not going to eat barak obama's dog food. what he served up is not what i would have done if i was president of the united states. >> gretchen: wow. that got your attention. >> that was the best line of the entire night. it encapsulated the real dissatisfaction, i won't say

disgust with some of the president's policies, but the absolute sense of outrage in some communities and concern about what's going on and saying this is not enough. we can be better. we can be greater and i'm not going to be satisfied with that. in one sentence, he encapsulated what the outrage is in america at this point and gave a cause to the republicans going forward. i think what they need to be doing in terms of getting their own message out as a party is to focus less on each other and more on the national issues. although there was a very specific discussion on debt. there was a specific discussion on health care. there was a specific discussion on foreign policy. a lot of areas. >> steve: it was very good. >> it gives a lot to republican vote force think about. >> gretchen: there is another debate coming up in the third week of september on fox. coming up on the show, liberals in wisconsin suffered a huge loss. but you probably didn't hear that much about it. brett bozelle exposes the latest

>> clayton: welcome back. a victory for republicans this week in the wisconsin recall elections. they held on to their majority in the senate but coverage from most networks were silent about the failure of the left in this battle. brent bozelle is the founder of the media research centre and he did and conducted a lot of this research. nice to see think morning. >> how are you doing? >> doing well. let's throw this up on the screen. i'm surprised by the total amount of broadcast air time for these recall elections this week. look at abc, had no coverage of it. this according to you guys, cbs, one minute and 55 seconds. nbc, 45 seconds. you were sitting there with stopwatch, i guess. >> we do. we actually do. now, compare that to the coverage in the first five days of this explosive story. 53 network news stories. what's going on here? what's happening is that these

protests were supposed to be the rebirth of the left in that going into the 2012 campaign. it's why the left spent $30 million on these recall campaigns. they threw the unions, threw everything they had. i can suitly with 100 -- absolutely with 100% set do you do guarantee you that had the recall elections worked, they would have led every newscast and would have gone on for days on end about how the tea party is debt and the coffee party or whatever they're calling it is alive. guess what? it all completely fizzled and it might have even backfired because there are two more recalls against democrats next week. there was a huge republican victory that nobody heard about. >> clayton: had it gone the other way to your point, we may have learned from recent history why we would have seen a lot of coverage on that. these are different clips from different news anchors from february talking about the wisconsin battle. take a listen.

but now they are almost all back. the 4th brigade combat team arriving today. these are their families. they were elated. many of them seeing infants they had never seen before. once again, general john f. campbell and his beautiful wife, ann, dear friends, we met in kandahar, afghanistan, eight long years ago. i was asking if the terrible cost was worth it. you know, general, we are in a period of severe budget cutbacks and all the rest of it. now as you're getting promoted to lieutenant general, getting a third star, going to the pentagon, how will the army operating with the new reality in terms of the deficit and all the rest of it? >> we're going to have to be very smart about how we shape the army for the future. it's a relevant force, it's a decisive force for our nation. the strength of our nation is our army. the strength of our army are our families. we have to take a lard look how we restructure -- hard look how we restructure. but i think we have a good plan. a brand-new chief coming on board, general dempsey going to be the chairman. there's a great future for the

army. we'll make sure we fit this, make sure the strategy is tied in nationally and i look forward to the next couple of years. very tough decisions coming up, go again, i look forward to continuing and having the opportunity to make some differences in the army and contribute. >> i call him america's spartan, a true warrior. his wife, though, is the warrior here at fort campbell. she's the one really the first to console the families, you know, and how have you managed such a rough year? how do you answer when a spouse says, was it worth it that my husband or my wife passed over there? >> i think you always have to let them know that yes, it was definitely worth it, that they did not die in vain, but the families are incredibly strong. they draw strength from each other. ones who died early in the war are now embracing the new group of survivors and helping them to cope. so we just hang on to each other every day and take a day at a

time. >> look here, come on over here. here are some of the families. how happy are you? how happy are you? >> i am very, very happy. i got a little one here. come here. >> who is this guy? did he see his daddy? >> yes, he did. he wouldn't let him go. >> and even got a cookie for his trouble. >> yep. that's a bribe. >> what was the worst part of it for you? >> disappointment. the whole year. we had to make it through a whole year. >> the whole year, but you did. >> yes, we did. >> it's easier the second time around. >> easier the second time around. i'm glad he came home. i guess the moral of this story is for these families, the families of our service people over there, it's been a year of loss, a year of sacrifice, and people are asking questions, was it worth the cost? where do we go from here? 132 dead, you know. what have we accomplished? these are very, very important

>> welcome to the nfl. the fact is that this -- we're talking about presidential politics. it isn't bean bag. the fact is that politicians are running for president. they've taken shots at each other. we're asking tough questions, probing questions, and if the politicians decide they want to take shots at us, we're fair game as well. >> gretchen: i was just asking what tons of our viewers are saying this morning, and i know you heard it before last night. i'm not saying it was right or wrong. i just asked you to respond to it. >> steve: and chris, we're going to play an exchange where we hear newt gingrich and this really got the ball rolling. in fact, a number of people have suggested that newt gingrich was one of the winners last night because of the way he did go after the media. before we play mr. gingrich, i want you to repeat the question you asked him that got him agitated. >> yeah. real quickly, what i asked the speaker was one of the ways we

judge candidates is the campaign they run and i pointed out that his entire national staff and his iowa staff walked out on him because they said that he was undisciplined about campaigning and last check, he was a million dollars in debt. here was his response. >> let me say, first of all, chris, that i took seriously injunction to put aside the talking points and i wish you would put aside the gotcha questions. i would love to see the rest of the questions asking us about what we would do to lead an america whose president has failed to lead instead of playing mickey mouse games. >> speaker gingrich, if you think questions about your record are mickey mouse, i'm sorry. i think those are questions that a lot of people want to hear answers to and you're responsible for your record. >> steve: then you hear booing right there. i didn't think that was particularly a gotcha question. i could think of others. but certainly newt gingrich had a good answer. besides your role as the

question asker is to ask hard questions because if people can't answer a question from chris wallace, should they be the president of the united states? >> well, more importantly, how are they going to do when they face the democrats next year? you know, one thing i think it's clear, all that talk from the liberal media that we're the mouthpiece of the republican party or we take our talking points and we took this very seriously in the debate. we were asking tough probing questions, plenty of questions on the issues. we talked about immigration and health care and most importantly, the economy, foreign policy. i'm sorry that speaker gingrich was unhappy with me. he also was unhappy with bret baier when he asked him a question about libya. i think it was something about shooting the messenger. >> clayton: a lot of viewers, as steve was saying, responded 'cause they thought that fox moderators were asking questions that kept the candidates on their toes and took them out of their talking points mode for once. one of the questions came from

bret baier about governor rick perry who is not in the room and his name seemed to hover above -- what was the sense on the moderating panel? did it seem like governor rick perry's name was hovering above the entire debate? >> i think that's somewhat overstating it, clayton. but what i would say is that, look, if you're a political reporter, you know this race is going to change this weekend. one thing is going to be the ames straw poll. i don't think you can win in ames. it's not make, but it is break. if some of these candidates who have particularly focused on iowa were to finish very poorly, they might just drop out of the race. but it will also change this weekend because rick perry is going to get in and he immediately vaults and becomes one of the front runners, along with mitt romney. so you know, they all take him seriously. they know he'll be a real player, particularly here in iowa with tea partiers, with social conservative, but across the country. he's a very strong, credible candidate. >> gretchen: some people say a

lot of the fire from mitt romney came before the debate started when he had this heated exchange with somebody who came to one of his speeches. let's take a listen to this and i'm interested in your comments afterward. >> if you want to speak, you can speak. but right now it's my turn. i'm glad you're on social security. hold on just a moment. hold on just a moment. hold on just a moment! i'm going to let you speak in a moment. no, no, i came here to speak. the way this is going to work is that you get to ask your question, i get to give my answer. if you don't like my answer, you can vote for someone else. but now it's my turn to give my answer! [ applause ] you ready for my answer? i'm not going to raise taxes. that's my answer. i'm not going to raise taxes! and if you want somebody that can raise tax, vote for barak obama! >> clayton: don't ever mess with a person with a microphone, chris. >> that's exactly right. listen, i thought it was one of mitt romney's best moments in this entire campaign.

he's kind of floated above the campaign, people say that he has been so disengaged that he's part of the mittness protection program. he showed some fire and that's a good thing for a candidate to show. i remember ronald reagan back in 1980 during a debate saying when one of the moderators wanted to cut him off saying, i paid for this microphone. it's good for a candidate to show fire and i go back to my point involving newt and all these candidates, this isn't bean bag. this is serious stuff. people are running to be the president of the united states. we take it seriously and obviously they do and the voters should. >> steve: there was a lot of fire between michelle bachman and tim pawlenty. they were at each other. michelle bachman is actually going to be your guest this sunday on fox news sunday. right? >> yeah, that's right. and i think it would be fair to say going into the ames straw poll tomorrow, she's the favorite. so if she wins, she gets a boost. if she doesn't, there will be questions as to why.

we'll have an interesting interview with her sunday and you're right, one of the highlights of the debate besides my sparring match with newt was tim pawlenty and bachman going at each other. i think there is only one ticket out of iowa for the two of them and they were really pulling to see who will get it. >> gretchen: by the way, you don't have any spinach between your teeth. >> clayton: you look fabulous. >> gretchen, hi, i just want to say hello, gretchen. >> gretchen: oh, thank you. i appreciate that. we got to wrap it up. we'll see you again next friday. bye. >> you bet. >> steve: meanwhile, we have headlines for this friday. a bizarre twist in the case of robin guarderren, that american woman who disappeared in aruba more than a week ago. her on again, off again boyfriend, now back in maryland, says somebody signed on to her e-mail account. the g mail account that she had after she went missing. 40-year-old richard foster says

he didn't chat with gardener on-line, but that her account was definitely active. right now the only suspect in the case, her travel companion, gary giordano. he is refusing to cooperate with police. >> clayton: this skier's u.s. olympic career is on a slippery slope thanks to a disturbing incident on a jetblue plane. you're not going to believe this. he was drunk when he relieved himself on a sleeping 11-year-old girl on a flight from oregon to new york. he then got into a confrontation with the girl's father, who is battling cancer. prosecutors say they won't press charges, but he could be in danger of losing a spot on the u.s. olympic team. he was bumped from the team's developmental roster and has refused thus far to apologize. >> gretchen: you got to see this. a bull getting one last taste of freedom after escaping from a slaughter house. he ran amuck down the streets of new york city before eventually being rained it and sent back to where he belongs. we showed you another bull on the run yesterday.

girlfriends or parents or underground economy. the equivalent number in 1970 was 6%. this is a national crisis and part of it has to do with the skills mismatch. there are some jobs open, but people get out of the work force and they find it very hard to get in. another thing is the dropout rate. high school dropout rate is increasing, especially among men. and men aren't graduating from college at the same rates as women. again, national crisis. we need to be talking about it. >> gretchen: the interesting thing is you say with sort of slack demand, companies can afford to be pickier will the people they go after, so they steal people from other countries as opposed to going into the unemployment pool. >> that's right. the number of people who are unemployed for years now is unprecedented since world war ii. this long-term unemployment. so what happens is that people get out of the work force and particularly in this fast-paced

global economy, their skills get rusty very fast. it's hard for them to get back in. they lose that habit of going to work even makes it hard. so it's easier for a company with slack demand, it's easier for them to just say, look, we'll just hire from another company. we won't dip into this pool of unemployed people. again, brewing national crisis. >> gretchen: i want to get to the other finding you had in the article, which was astounding, which was the percentage of u.s. adults collecting federal disability has doubled since 1989 even though the american population isn't any less healthy. is this a new entitlement program, nina? >> it sort of is becoming that, gretchen. i think what's happening is that people -- this is social security disability program, which was set up for people who are chronically ill. what it's become is that even though we aren't sick or more people are applying under a mental health category, under addiction categories, and what happens is that people get on this and they use it as a
