tomorrow. you are here at the fairgrounds. i think a lot of people might want an answer to this one question. are you considering a run for the presidency of the united states? >> i am still considering a run, sean. [ cheering and applause ] >> i think the good folks near iowa, you can ask be in here and i think they would tell you, it is time this country is put back on the right track. [ inaudible ] >> they are ready for positive change from washington, d.c.. >> sean: obama said in february of '09 when he got into office, that he would be -- it would be a one-term proposition if he does not turn the economy around in three years. he's had three years. the economy has gotten worse. i think maybe that will be another broken promise on his end. if the people of iowa have a say have a funny feeling he will be that one-term president.

>> that's right. and that recognition that he articulated that there was no way, no reason for him to be reelected if the economy was in the tank three years from when he said it. that's where we are. now it is time for positive change. common sense, fiscally conservative ideas, solutions to be put in place to get the economy back on the right track. of course, they are common sense solutions. you heard some of them articulated in the debate last night. it was exciting last night. >> sean: where are you in your decision-making process? i just spoke to your husband, todd is here, your kids are here. you are having a good time this is a important time for the safety iowa. we are told rick perry may make announcement. where are you? >> as for rick perry, i hope he does jump into the race. the more ideas that are debated the better for the electorate. you all deserve good choices in the 2012 election. i he and others are willing to

put them -- i hope he and others are willing to put themselves forward for service. for me the impact of family -- >> sean: you just had a new grand child. >> a new perfect baby girl, very blessed. impact on family is paramount. i still think there's enough time here. knowing that the field is not yet set. i think that there will be people coming and going in the next couple of months. >> sean: let's talk about last night's debate. a comment you made earlier today which, anybody but obama. any of the candidates on stage last night, what were your impressions of the debate? >> i was thankful some folks took off gloves. the people in iowa and everywhere else deserve people who are passionate about the change that needs to take place the get the economy back on the right track.

last night, like newt gingrich i was so proud of him last night. he call the media out for taking on the press focusing unfortunately, too often on superficial issues. we are at a time of economic he would. things -- of economic woe. things happening that don't need to be happening. the individual american who want the exceptionalism put back into our country. yet the media wants to focus on things that are superficial. newt gingrich called chris out on that and i was proud of him for doing it. >> sean: you have been beaten up by the press so hard and you have bounced back. recently, they attacked michelle bachmann. you saw the picture the least flattering picture that anybody could have. you experienced that, i think you were in your running shorts. i don't know. it seems like every time the

media attacks conservatives they come bouncing back with more support and it doesn't seem to work. >> human nature. we are allowed to make a choice. we can become bitter or better. a lot of conservatives, we are getting so used to being beaten up in the lame stream media we say i'm going to become better, better informed, better debater more passionate about positive change. >> sean: look at where we are. 75% of the country thinks we are on the wrong track. president's approval rate something 40 on issues srfling the economy please in the low 30s. -- involving the economy he's in the low 30s. we see what is having in europe, if we continue down this path is this something that is coming to america? >> absolutely. we would be naive to put our head in the sand and pretend through some magical thinking that demise will not happen in this country as we are seeing

in other countries, if we repeat the mistakes they made. the mistakes would be continuing to overspend and borrow money that we are sending a bill to our kids and grandkids to repay for us. and allowing government referreach to stifle the entrepreneurial spirit in america. we are naive to think we are not going to end up like other socialist countries are ending up. we know the solutions it is a matter of applying them. >> sean: a lot of people were as frustrated as i was on this increasing the debt ceiling. the president gets a trillion dollars. there's own 67 billion in the first two years of cuts it is going to be kicked down the road which is often case. nor do we consider or debate or discuss, that government increases their spending 8% a year. >> right. >> sean: we are never going to balance the budget. i doubt everybody in this wrens is getting an 8% increase every year. >> even the 10 year deal just

struck is not going to solve the problem. we are not digging into the root of the problem, government spending . even that deal will not get us out of the problem created by liberals spending too much in the federal government. >> sean: do you have any faith in this commission that is now going to get together. we know the people that have been named. i don't. >> i agree with pawlenty and newt last night who said, it is a stupid idea. more government bureaucratic commission and committee to do the job that congress should have done. you can go out here and you can find 10 members of any iowa farming family and ask them, what are the common sense solutions we need to make the cuts in the federal government and in order to really get the economic engine, our businesses, to be able to

get up and running and grow and thrive and hire more people. ask any 10 members out here and they could probably give you a better idea than those members of the commission. [ cheering ] [ inaudible ] >> these members of congress have been part of the problem. not part of the solution. i say it with all due respect to those who are willing to serve in public office. but doggone it, no more politics as usual. >> sean: isn't it embarrassing that the united states of america with all its strength and history, that has saved the world from fascism, nazism, communism, terrorism, now we get a debt downgrade? i think america is better than that. and they had an opportunity to fix it, standard & poor's told them what it would take. >> the american public told them what it would take. we said congress, cut the budget, cap spending and balance the budget.

>> sean: welcome back to this special edition of hannity. we are live from the iowa state fair. we continue to be joined by sarah palin. i think we are at a tipping point. i think we are watching almost before our very eyes, a meltdown of the presidency. in terms of barack obama's ability to pivot, to adjust, to change, you know, give clinton his due, when push came to shove, he did shift.

>> he did. >> sean: i don't see this in this president, why? >> clinton did. he was smart and pragmatic enough to know he needed to roll over from the way left side of the bed and go to the center. and he had congress to shift him to the center. and they were strong enough, that helped our economy. that helped our country. obama isn't capable of doing that. i don't know if we are seeing so much a meltdown of a presidency. i think we are seeing a great awake thing of the american public. what i saw in candidate obama. when we were questioning his record. we knew he wasn't being vetted. >> sean: at all. >> voters were not told what it was that he believed in until we saw snippets here and unedited when he alluded to his desire to redistribute wealth and fundamentally, transform america. people are realizing what he meant by that. they are saying no, that is not what we need.

we need a restoration of america. >> sean: if we are at that tipping point, i agree there's a rising ascendancy in the country. we see the impact of the tea party in the 2010 race you have been around the country. the question is, when half country doesn't pay taxes, when 15% are on food stamps, we have a dependency entitlement class. it is almost the voting majority. does that become problematic? >> of course it does. all president obama needs for more people to not be working and not paying into the system, but being takers from the system than not and he can get reelected. that is why it is so important for people to get engaged to do their homework. to understand the issues. to understand the paramount situatiz"/!4ñ are facing and making sure they are doing all they can to get engaged in politics in 2012.

supporting candidates they can believe in making sure their candidate understands free market principles that government has to rein itself in. we have to incentivize induce so it stays here. >> sean: i have an opportunity to interview you often. you said would you get in if you didn't see a candidate that was resonating with the american people. one thing i've noticed, is that your passion is rising. you are going around the country. i see a shift. i sense that your desire to be involveed is becoming greater many am i interpreting that correctly? >> i describe that as a fire in the belly. it is not just me. >> sean: my fire in the belly is fire obama. these folks love this country. they want to make sure that we are handing the next generation the blessings of liberty. and those liberties are being taken away from us economically in the realm of other areas. from the top down, folks are not understanding washington, d.c.. the exceptionalism that is america and what it is going to take to restore that exceptionalism. protection of our constitution, respect for that constitution. respect for the free markets that allowed america to be as prosperous as it is. >> sean: we've got to balance a budget. if you run what is your plan? how would you get us to a balanced budget, realistically, how long does it take you as president to do it even perhaps if you had a divided congress? >> you have to get in as president and present a plan to congress. >> sean: in writing. >> a real plan where you are showing where the cuts can and

should be may. we have got to reform entitlements, no question. we have got to cut back on all of the spending, especially those things that the government to trying to do that state s could and should be doing. department of education, we do not need that. the states -- [ inaudible ] [ cheering ] >> [ inaudible ] >> that principle applies to every area of government. we have to respect the 10th amendment. let states' rights shine through. empower the people of america that's the fundamental problem we see coming out of washington. there is no faith given not american people to our small businesses. understanding that you all know better how to spend your money than politicians in washington, d.c. know how to spend. [ inaudible ] >> sean: here's an important question.

every time republicans have tried to balance the budget, cut medicare, social security, to prevent it from going bankrupt, we saw paul ryan getting thrown over the cliff, throwing granny over the cliff. republicans want to poison the air, water, kill children. president obama says he wants kids with autism, down syndrome and the elderly to fend for themselves. none of these things are true. how do you breakthrough the predictable arguments we need bigger government, these cuts are draconian when you talk about balancing the budget? i don't see republicans fighting back hard enough against what are basically lies. >> that is your job and my job busting through those lies. holding those liars accountable and making sure they are not getting away with telling the american public that government is the answer. you know government isn't the answer. government is the problem. all you have to do, look at what is going on in greece.

look what is going on in socialized country. they grew government, couldn't afford it. let's not repeat the mistakes we are seeing elsewhere. let's done what we know -- let's do what we know america needs done. let's allow energy independence in america. course the straw poll tomorrow. this is where it started. if people want to be president of the united states they need to come out here, meet real people aefpbl tough questions. show they have the vision and plan for america. we got to get this deficit under control. we have to focus on jobs. bring america back strong. >> sean: how has what has happened in washington impacted a state like iowa? you were telling me, your population is three million? >> yeah. >> sean: you have 18 million -- [ inaudible ] >> ago -- [ talking over each other ] i was governor in the 80s agriculture was the weakest part of the economy now it is the strongest part. >> sean: in new york where i live there's eight, nine million people and 64 million rats. a little bit different situation in new york. the people in this country are suffering. we have burdensome regulation from washington.

the economy is tight. jobs have been lost. unemployment is not coming up. what do you see is the problem? >> too much government. too high taxes. too much regulation. reducing the regulatory and tax burden. the biggest problem is the federal corporate income tax and the fact that we penalize companies for bringing profits back and investing in america. we got to quit penalizing people for doing the right thing and reduce the tax burden. there's a lot of people that would invest if they felt there was stability and they could be confident they are not going to be taxed or regulated out of business. >> sean: what did you think of the debate last night? any one person that you think stood out? >> i think several candidates made good points. i guess -- i've tried to be a good host. i'm proud they are all here. i want them to actively compete. so i don't want to pick a

winner. i was really proud to see the turn-out and the spirited debate. and the candidates care, iowans care. we got to bring in country back. >> sean: we are told with the iowa straw poll going on tomorrow, a pew people said they are concerned and upset that governor perry is going to be in the south carolina and apparently making his announcement. does that take away some of the thunder? are you concerned about that? >> i talked to governor perry, i said this is just a straw poll. the real thing is the caucus. he needs to come here, if he wants to be president, actively compete and go all over this state and answer questions just like the other candidates. that's what he needs to do if he wants to be president. [ applause ] >> sean: what is your favorite thing to eat? we have root beer floats, cinnamon rolls, lemonade -- >> porkchop on a stick is my favorite. it is the best.

knows a lot about getting the people of iowa in his corner. the man who won the caucus in 2008. mike huckabee. let's welcome governor huckabee. >> great to be here sean. terrific crowd gathered to watch your show. what a weekend for politics. anybody who is a political junkie, this is the place to be. >> sean: iowa has been a very good state to you. >> yes. i did a chapter in a book the first chapter was called "i love iowa." >> sean: i'm not surprised. every state seems to have a different dynamic. iowa, family values, a big, big part of people's concerns in government. new hampshire, live free. you go to south carolina and move around the country. is there a certain -- for example, to win iowa, what

does it take? >> first iowa people have an knowing when someone is real and authentic and when someone is not. one of the things that is of benefit to the rest of the country, people gripe how come iowa gets so many attention? the people of iowa do america a favor by filtering the candidates. star struck because somebody is running for president. you walk up and say i'm running for president they go oh my gosh. they say yeah i haven't met you six times yet. people here will ask tough questions. if you give them a talking point answer, they will press you. harder than the press will press you, the people here will do that. >> sean: we found out in the des moines register this morning, that mitt romney was confronted by a group. that happens to everybody in the public eye. how do you think that went? >> i thought of all the moments of the debate last

night, the best moment wasn't even last night, it was yesterday afternoon. i thought mitt romney handled that masterfully. he absolutely i thought presented a smack down moment. i was romney's best moment that i've seen him on the campaign trail. >> sean: i think we have the tape. let's run it for our audience. apparently they don't have it. people have by now have seen it. when you watched the debate last night it was more fiery than half the debates have been. we are entering the season. were you happy with how the debate went? >> i thought mitt came out very well. as the front-runner all he has to do is come out unscathed and he pretty much the dust-up that you saw between congresswoman bachmann and governor pawlenty was the story of the night.

rick santorum was masterful in helping to understand why you do not give iran a nuclear weapon. this is to me an amazing moment. with all due respect to congressman paul, there's a big difference between russia having a nuclear weapon, which their purpose was so no one ever used it. iran wants a nuclear weapon so they can use it. i thought newt gingrich had a great moment. newt can bring thins to a place where everybody can nod and say yeah, i understand that i was a good moment for several candidates. >> sean: does it matter that some are not participating in the straw poll? governor romney, newt gingrich, those that decide, those that don't decide, they make a mistake? >> i believe it is like entering a marathon. you can't enter at mile six. like it or not the marathon to

the white house begins in iowa. had it not been for iowa, barack obama would not have had a launching pad. it can be a very important breakthrough moment for a candidate who otherwise is wall lowing in obscurity. >> sean: -- wallowing in obscurity. >> sean: for those of us who saw barack obama as radical left from the beginning. i think we hit a tipping point with the downgrade, losing our aaa rating. between that, the high unemployment rate, record deficit, record debt, economy in a shambles. all of this has contributed to a narrative that i don't see how the president can change or shift. this president has not been able deal with the economic problems, despite promises to the contrary. do you think we've hit that tipping point? does he have a hard time winning reelection now? >> he has a hard time. barack obama cannot run on his record. what is he going to say? i've led more debt than any

president. the only president who has seen a downgrade in our credit rating. there's only one thing he can do, he can take a billion dollars and shred whoever his opponent is. that's what you are going to see. this may be the meanest, ugliest, most vicious, savage campaign that america has ever witnessed. >> sean: what happened to his lectures about tone in washington? >> the people of iowa have a lot of cattle and pork. they know when there's a pile of it and when they see something like that, they know, simple as that. economy, the stay economy, the local economy and personal economy. this economy is stuck. the administration does not have one idea on the table to get it moving, because they don't recognize that the business sector has to do it. >> sean: what do you think the problem is with president obama? i he had both houses of congress,. he had the white house. he's been successful. he got his budgets passed. he got his stimulus, bailouts passed. obama care passed. he's been successful. >> problem has been, he has not been working on the right problems for the people. he didn't himself with the right people. the five people that gave him his economic plan, four are gone and geithner is just barely in there. he didn't pick the right people to get the right advice. they thought they could spend this country to prosperity. every family in america knew that wouldn't work. that was the problem.

[ cheering ] >> sean: how important is it that you do well in this first test this iowa straw poll? >> my test in the debate was more important than how well we do in the straw poll. the straw poll is important, because it is going to be a measure of the intensity of my supporters. i have been leading in positive intensity, according to gallup. we want our supporters to leave excited, enthused and ready to go to work. whether we come in first, second, third or forth, it is not that critical. the des moines register poll has me solidly in third place from voters across the state which is a better measure than just what happens at the straw poll. in addition to making sure our people are enthused and excited, we have some fun. governor huckabee and you are going to do a song together.

>> it is going to be tough. there are two, three different candidates who can win that thing. i think michelle bachmann could win it. i think -- i'm really interested in seeing was with tim pawlenty. whether he surprises anybody with some kind of finish. >> sean: does that hurt him? either michelle bachmann or governor pawlenty does that hurt them if they don't do well? >> i think they have the most on the line. we should not underestimate ron paul. people are loyal, they will turn out if it is a low turn out, ron paul does well. the people that have the most to gain or lose on this are pawlenty and bachmann. >> that is going to be the thing to watch as we saw in the debate last night. >> sean: you think ron paul could take it? >> oh yeah. this is about who has an energized base they can get to come. he definitely has that.

the numbers could be in range where he could win. >> sean: what extent do you think last night's debate is going to impact the straw poll tomorrow? >> i -- i think pawlenty hurt himself last night when he went after michelle bachmann the way he did. i thought i was too harsh. >> sean: you base that on your experience in the gephardt battle he had. >> when you get in these situations, gephardt had to win iowa in 2004, had to. howard dean goes by him he knows he has to win. he spent the rest of the campaign in a murder-suicide pack what you saw last night with pawlenty. >> sean: you agree? >> i do. i think that exchange between the two minnesota candidates the last wore was you put me in a position where i had to choose between raising cigarette taxes and life. i chose life. that's a strong closing
