>> but for now, irene is slamming the caribbean. phil keating joins us live from nassau in the bahamas for more. >> yep. >> hey, phil. >> good morning. sound of a rooster suppois not we woke up to here. it's the howling, howling wind. it's 80 miles away from nassau, that being the eye of a category 3 hurricane, that irene pushing winds right now at 115 miles per hour. they were 120 at points yesterday but as the day gets on and we get some heat on these tropical waters and the sunshine comes to heat up everything, it's expected to get up to 120, 125 and possibly break that category 4 hurricane barrier. the outer band of this hurricane have long since passed up. they got here last night. the actual main is going to

wreak havoc through the central baham bahamas. it's expected to happen today between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. as the spokesperson for the national hurricane center said yesterday, this irene is a slow moving hurricane. she is monsterous in size. 200 miles wide on each side of the eye. to the outer band. that's 400 miles wide across and larger than florida, georgia, alabama combined. and once it finally gets past, you will feel that your bones have been rattled, absolutely. it's going to be a very long day for everybody, even though this is not impacting florida directly, the outer bands certainly are going up the florida coastline. they've got serious winds. serious wave issues out there in the surf, heavy surf but here in nassau in the bahamas, the eastern islands have already reportedly received major damage far out east.

right now, it's central bahamas and up next, the northwestern islands and, of course, after that, eventually around cape hatteras, north carolina. back to you in new york. >> that's exactly right. let's take a look at the maps and find out where irene is heading right now. it's a category 3 and there you can see the outer bands, as he said, will be impacting, perhaps, florida a little later on. there you can see right there as it touches the florida coast. the big question is where is it going to go? right now, it's a category 3. could become a category 4 later on today or early tomorrow and then, as he mentioned, it will probably be impacting the cape hatteras area. coastal north carolina as a category 2 but then it's going to continue on up through the northeast, perhaps impacting new york city. washington, d.c. it's going to be a major rain maker and it's going to be a lot of wind and people, if you're thinking about it, today is a good day to buy batteries and all sorts of stuff.

70-year-old american kidnapped in pakistan 12 days ago rescued in an early morning raid. pakistani police freed weinstein from a town about 125 miles from where he was abducted after getting leads from three suspects arrested yesterday. weinstein runs a development firm that advises pakistani businesses and government officials. overnight, a scary moment at lax. you are looking at a jetway that collapsed sending people plummeting nearly 10 feet to the ground. you know what it's like when you're going on the jetways. it happened just as passengers from an american airlines flight from boston were exiting the plane. two people were taken to the hospital. their injuries reportedly not life threatening. there will be an investigation as to why that happened oochlt casey anthony sneaking under the radar. fox news has learned she's recordly reported for probation in florida. she did so late last night. the exact location of the probation office is being kept under wraps, though, there are reports that anthony's probation has been modified. she'll reportedly take on-line

currently, rick perry is now on top leading you all 29. mitt romney second with 17. ron paul, 13. her m herman cain, you have 4% of the vote. you have america's respect and attention. you've charmed this country. why can't you get their vote? >> two reasons. it's not over yet. first of all, my name i.d. is still almost 50%. so i still have a long way to go in terms of name i.d. secondly, i'm getting the vote of people i'm able to touch and speak with as i travel around the country but the mainstream media, as you know, they've tried to narrow it down to just what they call the top tier, you know, of the three people at the top and it's not like that. there's a disconnect between the mainstream media and what the real people are saying. and the other thing is as this campaign goes forward, i believe that governor perry who is a good candidate, a lot hasn't been done about yet and it's going to take some time. remember at one point, representative michelle bachmann

>> this is what everybody is talking about today. that's the weather and extreme weather alert to start your headlines. hurricane irene setting her sights on the eastern seaboard of the united states. parts of north carolina under a hurricane watch right now. you can see in this new video from the dominican republic that irene already causing major damage in that country as it continues to swirl right now over the bahamas as well as the turks and kaikos it's just moving out of. there she is, that's a gigantic storm. hundreds of miles across. it is not expected to impact florida significantly although the outer bands will. the big thing is over the next couple of days is going to be scooting up toward north carolina. and here's the more horrifying part of it. currently, it is a tropical -- rather, it is a category 3 at 115 miles per hour. it's going to be a category 4 within the next 24 hours. and then it's going to take aim on coastal north carolina over the next couple of days. probably make landfall as a category 3 and then as it moves

towards the northeast, it has, perhaps, new york, either the city or long island, cape cod, in its sights. 55 million americans could be impacted by this storm. >> you know, i thought it was crazy but i saw it was going to rain today. has nothing to do with the storm, right? it's going to rain in the east. >> also getting kind of windy outside, too, yesterday and today, and i'm thinking is it already starting? >> before the storm. >> if you were around this scene, you probably thought maybe they're shooting a movie or something but that's not the case. potentially catastrophic explosion averted in lincoln, california. we were telling you about this today. it turns out the car did not contain as much propane as we originally, perhaps, thought yesterday. it was a huge sigh of relief, obviously, for the nearly 40,000 people who were forced to evacuate the area. those residents being let back into their homes right now.

>> hurricane irene set to make landfall today in florida and by the way, florida is right on its path. tiffany from our affiliate wofl is over in smyrna beach, florida. it looks pretty nice right now. >> yeah, it's not too bad. we have a little bit of a breeze. the waves have actually died down in the past two minutes. i want to show you what we're

looking at this morning. the waves, this is pretty standard for florida beaches, at least right here at new smyrna beach, 20 minutes south of daytona beach. the waves were much bigger a little while ago. 6 to 5 foot waves that we can see. they're starting to break a little high again. you can see this morning. off shore, though, we are looking at 9 to 12 foot waves here in the central part of florida, hitting florida, the shoreline here in florida. i can tell you this, though, we were very worried about beach erosion i mean, we're looking we're going to stay out of irene's path but beach erosion was a big concern. fortunately, though, if hurricane irene continues to stay on the path she's at, our beaches will look good. we're at the best place with our beaches, since the 2004 hurricane season. we're looking good in the florida area. right now, you can see a little bit of wind dealing with this morning and some waves as well. that's the latest out here in florida. back to you guys in the studio. >> thanks, tiffany. we'll be talking to your governor a little bit later on in the show. steve? >> the calm before the storm.

meanwhile, religion has no place at ground zero. that's because new york city mayor michael bloomberg is banning the clergy from the september 11th, 10th anniversary ceremony. this comes as a surprise especially since he recently defended plans to build that mosque near ground zero. fernando cabrerra is a pastor at new outreach life international. he joins us today. mayor says he doesn't want any religious leaders at the 9/11 memorial. >> i think that's a mistake. the fact that religious leaders were one of the first ones to be at ground zero when the 9/11 terror took place, the very first person that was taken out of the rubble as many people remember was a chaplain. >> father michael judge. >> indeed. and this event is about -- it's

will bring unity. if the event is about gathering people together, 9/11 brought us together. the message was let's come together. prayer brings people together. you know, in the city council, we've -- we open our city council meetings every other week with prayer. and we have people from different faiths, no one objects. why would there be an objection in such an important event? >> and the mayor over the last couple of years has had no problems with him building that mosque, what, 600 feet from ground zero? >> indeed. and so let's be consistent. as a matter of fact, addressing the issue regarding the iron cross, some of the objective, he was all for it. speaking about the power of prayer. so why not include it in this great event. >> absolutely. >> he's keeping the religious out. i'd rather they kept the politicians out with all due

>> welcome back. the situation was dire. howard had no pulse for 96 minutes. not seconds, minutes. first responders thought he was dead but didn't give up hope. they called in a chopper and got an e.r. doctor on the phone who walked them through a last ditch effort to save his life. aftersho after shocking his heart 12 times, howard survived. he joins us live from the mayo clinic in minnesota with dr. white, an anesthesiologist and cardiac arrest expert that came up with a solution that saved his life. great to have you both here. thank you so much. howard, let's start with you. so take us back. you're in front of a grocery store. you're in minnesota. and next thing you know, you're having a heart attack. what can you tell us about what happened after that? because i know paramedics started working on you, they're talking to an e.r. doctor not on the scene and that doctor said you got to give up. explain what happened.

>> well, i don't really -- i didn't know about any of this until days after the heart attack but -- because i don't remember the actual heart attack but i collapsed. i had about 30 or so minutes into it, the mayo one helicopter flew in and the paramedic called the emergency room, gave the doctor my stats and that doctor said he's done, walk away. and bruce goodman, the paramedic hung up and called dr. white instead. >> that's why i'm here today. >> that crew would not give up. they would not take no for an answer. dr. white, what exactly happened? why were you able to carry this on after 96 minutes with no heartbeat? >> there were two things we were dealing with that made us persist in our effort. number one, howard had a cardiac or heart rhythm that was potentially treatable, if we could figure out a way to stop

the rhythm that was causing his arrest. and secondly, we were monitoring the amount of carbon dioxide that was being excreted in the lungs and that was a measure for us of how much blood was flowing to the vital organs. >> that's called -- >> mainly the brain. >> capnography. >> that's the technical name, yes. >> essentially, what happens, it's used by anesthesiologists. this is not a new technology but it's not in the field, is that correct? >> it hasn't been very popular in the field, that's true. we think now it will become increasingly popular. >> tell us, you know, you always want to know the answer to these questions but, of course, rarely do you get the answer. what can you tell us? how did it feel to come back? how does it feel now knowing what happened to you and how unusual a case you had? >> well, i'm still amazed every day when i think about it and, you know, i still wonder why and

how i ended up coming back from it at all. i mean, it's pretty incredible and i'm grateful, of course, and that's why i'm sitting here. >> doctor, it's scary to think, you know, that there are probably many others who have been given up on because they were told by a doctor, no, it's been too long. >> i'm sure that happens. we hope that experience like this will make it far less likely to happen again. we showed that using monitoring techniques like this can guide resuscitation to a successful outcome and we hope this example will be a stimulation to others to not give up too early. >> doctor, you and the paramedics are real life heroes and howard, congratulations. i hope the rest of your life is wonderful. >> thank you. >> thanks for joining us today. we appreciate it. all right, coming up, she's the most powerful woman in the world. it is not hillary clinton.

hour is expected to grow even stronger into a category 4 by this time tomorrow. >> already, irene is causing damage in the caribbean. phil keating is live in nassau in the bahamas where the situation was windy last hour and looks a lot worse now. >> definitely worse now. these battering winds getting more and more ferocious and now at least we have daylight here and you can really see the wave action behind me. the storm surge is truly the biggest threat for the bahamas out of this hurricane. remaining a category 3. 115-mile-an-hour winds but these waves are anticipated to surge, to really grow from 7 to 11 feet higher which is more than a lot of the 700 islands that make up the bahamas, the flooding has already reported in the southeast, the bahama islands from last night, as irene landed first at the bahamas on an all day long event today, going to

be rattling, shaking and really ferociously impacting nassau and the surrounding central bahama islands really for an intense period of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. but even after that, still going to be strong winds and rain throughout the end of tonight and even into tomorrow. the eye of the hurricane itself, about 70 miles from where i'm standing right now. it's going to keep going northwardly so nassau itself won't actually see the eye of the hurricane. it could turn into a category 4 tomorrow. miami right now, i just talked to people there, it's still very windy and cloudy and rainy over there as they're getting the outer bands. it's going to be a long, long day and the winds are really starting to pick up. back to you in new york. >> the winds really are starting to pick up. all right, phil keating live down in the bahamas.

right now, category 3 going to amp up as it goes out over some clear open warmer water over the next couple of hours. it's off the florida coast and we'll be talking to the governor of the great state of florida in 10 minutes to find out how his state is getting ready. as it moves over the next couple of days, category 4 by friday morning and then on saturday, it's going to be starting to impact south and north carolina as a category 3 and then it looks as if it could make landfall as a category 2 or 3 as you can see right there. the outer banks have already been evacuated. and then as you can see that cone of uncertainty, it comes up the northeast. it could impact new york city, boston, washington, it's going to be a big rain maker with some heavy winds. >> and you're talking sunday with that, right? >> yeah. >> sunday into monday morning. >> long islanders aren't prepared for that kind of stuff, are they? >> yeah, we have windbreakers.

i mean, that's -- it's been about -- it's been a really long time. >> yeah. all righty, let's get some other headlines today. the 70-year-old american who was kidnapped in pakistan 12 days ago was rescued in an early morning raid. pakistani police freed weinstein from the town about 125 miles from where he was kidnapped. they got leads from three suspects who were just arrested. weinstein runs the development firm that advises business and government officials. overnight, a scary moment at los angeles international airport. you're looking at a jetway that collapsed sending people falling 10 feet to the ground. it happened just as passengers on an american flight, american airlines flight from boston were getting off the plane. the captain and passenger were taken to the hospital. their injuries luckily, though, not life threatening. the east coast still shaking. i don't know if you guys felt this last night, i was fast asleep, 4.5 magnitude aftershock jolted the east coast a little after 1:00 a.m. this one was about 5 miles south of mineral, virginia.

this is the fourth and most powerful aftershock since the original earthquake on tuesday. no reports of any injury or damage. the jokes just write themselves on this one. a man busted after stuffing -- why do i get to read this one? snakes into his shorts. just take a look. the surveillance video shows a 22-year-old cramming five baby boas, boa constrictors into his pocket at a phoenix pet store. >> into his pocket? >> ok. anyway, he leaves the store without paying. that's why he's stuffing them in his pockets. he was eventually caught after he tried selling the snakes to another pet store. why are you looking at me like that? >> i admire the way you deliver that story, that's all. >> thank you. >> the cbo has come out with a study they completed in july about where our economy is and where it isn't. when they look ahead, they don't project a pretty picture for unemployment. right now it's 9.1%.

they project on election day, it will be 8.5% which shows not much of an improvement although they do salute, they do salute what congress has done in terms of cutting the deficit because although it's not tremendously significant, the deficit is going down. >> a drop in the bucket, some would say. they say it's going to remain above 8% through 2014. this is not good news for the president of the united states as he tries to earn another four years but yet, here's a deputy white house press secretary doing his best to spin those numbers as being good for the president. >> the report today indicates as you point out that some progress has been made and the report makes it clear there's a lot more that we have to do. that's why one of the things that the president is going to talk about next month in addition to some of these new ideas about creating jobs is actually a suggestion, ideas for how the super committee can go beyond their $1.5 trillion

deficit reduction mandate to actually do more to address the longer term fiscal challenges that are facing the country. >> the president has been criticized for not having any sort of deficit reduction. >> what about his jobs plan? you know, maybe we should have heard about that before he went on vacation. >> all right. stuart varney was here. we were discussing the same exact issue with him and you were smart enough to hit play/record on the vcr. let's watch. >> you can grasp at straws and say that the trend in unemployment is down. that will help the president. but i don't believe that any president has ever been re-elected with an unemployment rate even approaching 8 1/2%. that cbo report painted a very grim picture. >> right. >> what we should factor into that is most people still, about 60% of the country still blame president bush for the economy. and that's something the white house has been very effective at spinning and in the meantime, people are looking to the question, where are the jobs? when you look at the state of texas, they have added, what,

40% of the jobs in the united states over the last two years and the guy at the helm of that, governor rick perry now suddenly, according to gallup poll, is ahead of the republican pack. look at that. by double digits. 29% over mitt romney at 17%. >> michelle bachmann down there at 10% under ron paul according to this gallup poll and there's herman cain coming in there at the end. he says, look, you know, he's not giving up on this. brian talked to him a little while ago. >> as this campaign goes forward, i believe that governor perry who is a good candidate, a lot of bidding hasn't been done about him yet. it's going to take some time. remember at one point, representative michelle bachmann was a flavor of the week. now perry is the flavor of the week. i'm not worried about that. we'll keep doing what we're doing, pushing our commonsense solutions and connecting with the people because i'm still the only problem solver in the group and none politicians. >> bright man, people respect him and that's the reason that he's running for president.

but we are presuming it's going to take a turn to the right. joining us right now from tallahassee is florida state governor, rick scott. good morning to you, governor. >> good morning, boy, your heart goes out to everybody in the bahamas right now going through that. we're getting prepared, you know, our state has great division of emergency management because we've been through hurricanes so we're asking everybody to have three days of water and three days of food. get ready. watch out, if it starts coming east, but hopefully it will continue to go north and maybe keep going east a little bit so missing the united states. >> that would be fantastic. governor, we're looking at some of the water in the bahamas. i understand there's a warning for coastal florida that out aways, you could wind up with 25 foot waves off the florida coast. >> absolutely. our risk right now looks like we're going to be on the -- in the outer bands of this and we'll get a lot of rain and hurt our beaches. hopefully it won't turn west, i

guess, and come towards us but we'll still get battered so we're doing a good job. our local emergency management is doing a good job just getting everybody ready and then if something happens up north, we'll be sending people up there to be helpful. >> i would imagine when you say sending people up, that would also probably include some utility folks because one of the things one of these storms of this magnitude goes through, it mows down a lot of power lines. >> and we've got a lot of experience with this so our utilities have done a great job of getting ready for this and they'll be -- they'll do a great job of going to these other states to be helpful. >> speaking of other states, your state and florida, congratulations are in order because while the united states debt outlook has been downgraded by standard & poor's, yours has actually been upgraded. why? >> well, we -- you know, we made the tough decisions and i walked in looking at a $3.8 billion budget deficit and now

we're projected a surplus. we cut spending and also reduced taxes. we cut property taxes by over $200 million and we eliminated the business tax for almost half the business owners in the state because we know the way to get out of this is to be fiscally conservative, and build jobs and that's what we're doing. >> so your credit rating went from negative to stable. and while other states, connecticut comes to mind, i think the governor there is proposing tax hikes on people so that they can balance their budget, you actually cut taxes. is this the time to be raising taxs in this particular economy? >> no. no. and, you know, the -- i'm talking to so many companies in connecticut about moving down here because they know it doesn't make sense what's happening in the north where they're raising taxes. they know the way you build businesses is you have -- you create an environment where businesses want to flourish. reduce taxes, and reduce regulation and they don't want frivolous lawsuits. that's what we're doing in florida and that's why our

unemployment has dropped from 12% to 10.7% this year. i think we're second to texas in job creation in year. so we're doing the things to get our economy going. >> you mentioned texas. i think texas under this particular governor, rick perry. they've approved the lose or pay rule when it comes to lawsuits and that has made a big difference there. meanwhile, while you have made a
