i slept very well at night knowing that man was in washington. i love the fact that he had the forethought to have a letter of resignation in the event he died. i think the guy is a true american hero. i can't wait to read the book. >> if only we had known he had a letter refs nation. >> sean: we were supposed to go mounting -- i said o'reilly will -- we are out of time. that's all the time we have left. greta is next. see you tomorrow night. >> greta: fox news alert. get ready, it is headed our way. fast and furious. hurricane irene preparing to slam the united states. right now irene is a category 3 with winds that could exceed 115 miles per hour that is now, she could get revved up more. seven states declaring a state of emergency, north carolina, virginia, delaware, maryland, new jersey, new york and connecticut. fema is ordering evacuations along the east coast.

7:02 pm
anywhere you see this red, the entire coast of . hurricane watch in effect up to sandy hook, new jersey. a lot of people -- a lot of people about to be getting this. here's the track as we move forward. by saturday afternoon officially a landfall somewhere here across this eastern area of north carolina, very bad news across parts of cape hatteras, outer banks. sunday afternoon, category 1 hurricane, very, very close to new york. those are the details there. let's break in down and see what this means, coastal north carolina, the outer banks, starting around midnight tomorrow night. around 24 hours from now we are going to see conditions get very bad. winds over 100 miles-an-hour. that means a storm surge 8 to 12 feet. rainfall, 5 to 8 inches means inland flooding. we are going to be dealing with this. delmarva, southern new jersey, starting saturday afternoon towards around 10 a.m. sunday morning. hurricane force winds storm surge 6 to 10 feet along the

jersey shore. to 10 inches of rain. up towards northern new jersey -- new york city, connecticut and long island. winds justing around hurricane force up to 80 miles-an-hour. -- a lot of power outages. a storm surge 6 to 10 feet, right here across areas of long island. six million people live here. if you live there you need to not be there by the time we get towards sunday morning. all evacuations need to be happening during the day saturday. >> greta: right now it is a category 3. most people may forget that katrina was 3, it was moving so slowly it kept pounding and pounding the gulf coast. is this one moving quickly or is it moving slowly and going to do that repetitive pounding that is so destructive? >> krane that, while i was a category -- katrina, while it was a category 3 when it made landfall, it was a 5. this will never be that strong.
7:04 pm
it will not be a category 5. could get to 4 briefly. we aren't going to be talking that strong of a storm. it will be moving quicker. likely category 1 storm when it hits the big cities, potentially new york city. a lot of population not as strong of a storm as we were dealing with katrina. >> greta: is this a done deal? is there a chance it could miss everything? >> a very slight chance. the models have been in good agreement for the last three days or so. i don't think that is going to happen. i think we will see a direct hit across the outer banks. direct hit at least on long island. then across -- even if it does go towards the east, it would be cape cod and martha's vineyard and places like that. long island likely to take a direct hit. so many people go out to the beaches, you are not going this weekend. you are getting away from the beach. >> greta: thank you rick. >> now to north carolina, jonathan serrie.
7:05 pm
>> reporter: the calm before the storm is surreal. interesting story to tell you. before your show we had a few moments to go to a local seafood restaurant to get dinner with our crew. while we were there, ordering, we were at this corner table, beautiful view of the water. while we were ordering, we noticed this work crew outside the windows. they were hammering plywood to the outside of the windows. by the time we were done ordering our view was almost completely obstructed. while on the inside of the restaurant it was crowded with customers and wait staff and seemed like business as usual. on the outside they were clearly preparing for a severe storm moving into this area. we've been seeing scenes like this up and down the north carolina coast on these barrier island communities. businesses trying to stay open for as long as possible to maximize their profits and serve their customers. but also, making the necessary preparations. so at the last minute, when
7:06 pm
they finally have to leave, they will be ready and try and mitigate any damage that the wind may cause to these businesses. where we are right now in atlantic beach and the surrounding community, there's a mandatory evacuation know fist for all visitors. by and large, -- by and large we are seeing people heeding those evacuations. tomorrow the mandatory evacuation will expand to include local residents. already thousands have already left these island communites, heading for higher ground on the mainland. there are still a few stall warts who say they are going to hunker down and weather the storm for a variety of reasons. some are concerned -- some are concerned about pets they don't have a way of taking care of if they move to a shelter. some have family responsibilities. some are worried about looking after their businesses. there are others who have faith in the construction of their homes. many of these homes were,
7:07 pm
especially newly built homes are built to hurricane codes. at least in theory, would be able to withstand these high winds. even so, authorities are saying, even if you live in a concrete bunker, they are urging people to get off of these island communities. if there is some other emergency, medical emergency, heart attack, they don't want to risk sending emt's out into the elements. especially when the winds start picking up, 115 miles or more, they might not be able to get to you. they are urging everyone to get off these islands, unless they absolutely positively have to be here. >> greta: always our video shows people leaving in the cars. what our video doesn't capture the people who don't have cars or the hospitals that are full of patients or the retirement homes. you talk about the people with the pets. we captured the video of the people who can leave. that's the terrifying thing. a lot of people that probably can't get out tonight.
7:08 pm
it is going to be dead aim for them. >> reporter: absolutely. that was certainly a huge case in new orleans. there were many who wanted to get out of that city when katrina was bearing down. they simply did not have the vehicles. they didn't have the transportation out. here on these island communites these are more resort towns. many visitors have means of getting off of the island. many of the residents, most of the residents do indeed have cars. as far as hospitals and nursing hopes on these island communites, standard procedure is actually once a hurricane watch is declared, by and large, these facilities will try to get patients, particularly the most elderly and sickly patients, to other medical facilities on the mainland. once the winds start picking up, there's nothing you can do. at some point you have to hunker down. >> greta: jonathan, thank you. of course be safe as that
7:09 pm
wicked storm comes through. >> we switch gears to the road to 2012. it is really tricky to figure out the right strategy. a candidate's strategy is dependent on polls, money, place of birth, prior jobs, gaffes and even spouses. everything is in the mix. right now 12 republicans in the race. joining us dick morris former adviser to president clinton. i wanted to talk to you. tell me the different strategy for the different candidates. let's start with governor perry. what is his path to victory to get that nomination? >> first of all it feels weird to be talking politics with this disaster unfolding. i hope the viewers forgive us. rick perry is fighting a two-front war. on the one hand he's opposing bachmann for votes of the evangelical religious right. on the other hand he's fighting romney for the votes of the club for growth economic conservative job
7:10 pm
creating people. those are very different constituencies. they overlap in their ideas. but as main voters they are different. what perry has got to do make inroads into bachmann's al conservative vote. not easy against a woman. and to make inroads into romney's fiscal conservative vote. his big test is he has gained enormously after announcing. probably artificially. when people actually see him performing for an hour and a half or two hours, three times during the month of september, they might have second thoughts about him and what he has to guard against is a drop that would deflate his momentum and have people feel that he's a has been. >> greta: now representative bachmann who -- who won the straw poll in iowa. she has to worry about governor perry trying to steal her religious vote. someone new to the race going to try to rip-off those votes.
7:11 pm
what is her strategy? how does she hang on to them and what is her path to the nomination? >> she is also fighting a two-front war. as you said fighting against perry for the evangelical vote. then fighting again the candidate who isn't there, sarah palin. who may well announce september 3rd, in iowa. if she does, going to be in all three debates in september. what bachmann has to do vis-a-vis palin, she has to preserve that charisma, feistiness that original ly that iconoclastic approach that has been so effective in the two debates so far. at the same time show she is more subststantive, better informed, more experienced and better educated than palin that's going to be a tough mission for her. she also has to focus on eye . she needs to win iowa the latest poll taken -- yesterday shows perry at 24, bachmann at
7:12 pm
22, romney at 19. essentially a three-way tie. bachmann has got now that pawlenty is out, she has iowa to herself and she has to win that. >> greta: it seems like she is an easier sale in south carolina than that she would be in new hampshire. the new hampshire political base seems much different the republican in new hampshire seems different in iowa and south carolina. am i right and if so how does she try to beat governor romney there? >> it is like one of these hurricanes, if she hits new hampshire as a category 4 because she wins iowa, she would be strong in new hampshire. probably not enough to beat romney, maybe enough for a second place finish. the problem in south carolina is she is running against a regional candidate, a southerner with the right accent in perry and a lot of evangelical convictions.
7:13 pm
she better win in eye to be able to survive past south carolina. >> greta: governor romney, he's now got the new business guy he has to compete with governor perry who just joined the racism now he has to worry about romney trying to steal his business votes -- i mean perry has the business about all the job growth in the state of texas and he's also hammering governor romney about massachusetts health care. how does he make -- what is his path to victory? >> what romney has to do is inject a new idea into this race. which is to say, what do you want? a governor who presided over the creation of jobs in his state or a businessman who actually got his hands dirty and knows how to create jobs? merely having a president where it happened on his watch, or a governor where it happened on his watch, general policies encouraged it is not enough. you need to understand the specifics of business.
7:14 pm
what businessmen need. what their concerns are. how they react to market uncertain how they need financing. 1,000 details that i know, because i did it. he doesn't know, because all he did was watch it happen. he's got to sell that concept. >> greta: governor palin, should she decide to get in the race, nobody knows, we ask every time she is on the air. what does she do to the path to victory? >> palin has a unique problem. it is not voters don't like her, they love her in the republican primary. it is not that they don't think she is qualified in the republican primary, they largely do. it is they don't think other people think she is qualified or other people think they would vote for her. her problem is that republicans are determined to elect someone who can win. of all the candidates she runs the worst against obama in the polls. if she were to get into the race, all of the media would come down on her like a ton of bricks, because that's what
7:15 pm
they do for a living. she would have a tough time dealing with that. not because she has to prove her innocence. she has already done that with the republican voters. but because she has to prove she can survive the flak and still win. especially when there's a softer option there in bachmann who hasn't had those personal attacks yet. voters might want to go with her. i hope sara does not get in i do not think she can win. i think she will lose the women's primary to bachmann. i don't think her political stature will recover from that. >> greta: what if she gets in and enters the debates and surprises -- she takes the debates by storm and everyone says that she won the debate? does that change things for her? >> that would make a big difference. again, the concern that the republican voters have is not that she is not good, but she can't win. she would need to produce some
7:16 pm
national poll numbers that show her beating obama. right now you have romney, perry and bachmann all either tied or ahead of obama she would have to join that club to assuage the fears of the republican primary voters on that score. >> greta: she is polling numbers without being in the race. i think a lot of people don't think she is going to run. does it make a difference if he is in the race? >> yeah, it does. in a positive way, because she will be in the debates. she will be able to speak out. she will be on the talk shows. in a negative sense, the media will haves to hate sarah palin. she is an existential threat to the democratic party because she represents republican women and there aren't supposed to be any of those, all women are supposed to democrat. they are going to unload on her that will be tough for her
7:17 pm
to handle. it helps her, but also hurts her. it protects the rest of the field. right now everybody wants to say what is the latest bad thing about perry or romney or bachmann? if palin gets if the race she like a lightning rod. she will get all the flak. and these other folks can advance relatively, unmolested. >> greta: is it fair to say she is unpredictable? we apply conventional wisdom when we make analysis of her, with her we just don't know. >> i think's true. we certainly don't know about her intentions. you are closer to her than almost anyone else. >> greta: i don't know. dick i have no idea. i've asked her every time she has been on the air, i have no clue. >> you are one of the only journalists who is always fair to her that gives you an inside track, because nobody else is. but, my basic point about her is that i think that had
7:18 pm
bachmann not gotten into the race, that there would be a lot of running room for sarah palin. come on, bachmann has a masters in tax law. she went to william and mary. sits on the intelligence committee in the congress. she has been in the congress for six or eight years. head of the tea party caucus. there are a lot of things that she has done. even on a personal level, all those foster kids and all of that. i think to a certain extent, she can portray herself as sarah palin without the bag badge. it is hard to -- baggage. it is hard to run against someone who is your double without your negative. that's the problem i think she would face. >> greta: dick, thank you. >> president obama gets a political stink bomb. we'll tell you what is up. >> plus, what is up with republican congressman paul ryan? the police were called to his office. we'll tell you what happened, coming up. this summer?

president richard trumka. saying he may not get the support of the afl-cio. that is big. what did the president of the afl-cio say? >> he's looking at what the labor union can do outside of the president's reelect campaign. he talked to some reporters at this breakfast and took a look at what they can do to get access to maybe state races in other races where it is going to have more of an impact in electing senators, members of the house. no getting involved in that obama 2012 -- >> greta: that's a threat. >> absolutely. >> greta: what is the unhappiness with the president? >> a lot of things labor is unhappy with. one element before he became president he was out there promising he would hold a vote, make sure the house and senate held a vote in the employee-free choice act allowing organizes to form
7:24 pm
labor unions. that never happened even when the democrats had a super majority in congress, arlen specter switching parties. the president said that he would do that. that was something they didn't see that was the first disappointment. then you go on to health care. you had issues with the public option. they didn't feel health care was right. in the end trumka backed that deal. took a lot of negotiating he was there at the white house when the president finalized the deal and said i'm going to support this. a lot of workers are unhappy with that. throw in unemployment, it is not a good picture. >> greta: it seems unlikely that the president's afl-cio wouldn't seaport a democratic nominee unless a republican candidate could figure out a way to swoop up that. if the vote is suppressed if there is no enthusiasm that's when it becomes a big problem for the president, people stay home. not that they vote for the opposing party.
7:25 pm
>> when you look at where the workforce and labor movement is strong. you are talking about important states for the democrats, ohio, wisconsin, pennsylvania. these are areas where labor is able to organize a lot of people to knock on doors, raise money, sort of get people excited. if you suppress that part of it -- that part of the base there's a problem. the white house has a secret in joe biden. he was a very strong friend of labor when he was in the senate. they deployed him a lot in 2008 when he was the nominee to make sure to court labor activists to make sure they were still going to be on obama's side. i would not be surprised if you see him on the trail. >> greta: almost like those town hall meetings. union leaders will say what have you don't since you've been vice president. you are a great weapon in the last campaign. great weapon for the democratic party and the run-up. what have you don't since. >> right. one reason why you will hear

why the uptick? joining us louise story. good evening. why the slight uptick on-the-jobless claim? >> it slight, you are right it was unexpected. they went up by 5,000. the thing to remember, these are initial claims. people going out initially filing for new been if is. people who have just lost their jobs. not people -- not people out of work for the last two years. these are new people coming into the unemployment pool. it has gone up. that said, we have these labor disputes going on with verizon. that is accounting for a lot of uptick. there's 8500 people from verizon who have filed here. the thing that threw me the most off kilter this week was a report from the congressional budget office in which they talked about their unemployment projections over the next few years. i don't know if you saw that they said they do not expect
