>> bret: thanks for inviting us into your home tonight. that's it for this "special report." fair, balanced, and unafraid. see you then. >> bill: "the o'reilly factor" is on. tonight: >> in the eye of the hurricane, of course, massive destruction. >> a category 3 storm barreling towards the eastern seaboard. >> she is really heading straight for us. >> bill: hurricane irene bearing down on the u.s.a. forecasters say the storm could be one of the worst in history. and could cause billions of dollars in damage. we'll have the very latest on this dangerous situation. >> i'm not a witch. i'm nothing you've heard.
2:01 am
>> bill: christine o'donnell the tea party senatorial candidate defeated in delaware getting roughed up by the media once again. >> okay, i'm being pulled away, you know, we turned down another interview for this. >> bill: miss o'donnell here on the factor tonight. >> this cannot be political. there is an awful lot of people who would like to participate. >> bill: michaelberg saying he does not want any religious people publicly involved in the tenth anniversary of 9/11. the culture warriors on that. caution, you where to enter the nondz, the factor begins right now. captions by closed captioning services >> bill: hi, i'm bill o'reilly. thanks for watching us tonight. the talking points memo on why warren buffet wants to reelect president obama will be in our second segment this evening because, once again, the lead story is hurricane irene. the massive storm coming on strong.
2:02 am
expected to hit the east coast this weekend. perhaps causing destruction in the billions of dollars. so far, it has hammered puerto rico and the bahamas with winds over 100 miles per hour. and torrential rainfall. the storm is presently category 3, a very dangerous hurricane. joining us now from houston, joe bastardi, chief meteorologist for weather bell analytics. so we had you on last night. what's new in the 24 hours with the storm? >> well, the track will be a bit further west in almost unprecedented track. only two times have i seen a track like this, 18, 21. i didn't actually see it i know of the storm. hurricane hafl in a 4. which means from folks let's say elizabeth city, north carolina, to statin island in new york. right along the atlantic coast. this is probably for 0% of the population the worst hurricane that they will have ever seen. >> bill: why is it tracking now
2:03 am
west instead of out to sea east? everybody is praying it goes out to sea. why is this happening? >> bill, yesterday we were talking about pick your poison. it wasn't ever going to escape out to sea. there were some folks that were hopeful about that. it's a matter of do you want it to hit long island or come straight up further west. as you hone in on the storm you have a overall at moss feerng pattern. it's moving further west than what it was yesterday. in other words, it's not a sudden shift. it's more of a gradual shift to the west. and the storm gets better and better defined. these are corks in the stream. what you have to do as a meteorologist is you don't sit there and just study the computer models. you try to visualize what does that stream look like and how is that cork going to move along? this is doing something that is rare but it's going to happen. >> bill: in the last 24 hours the storm has now veered west. but once it gets over land, that takes some of the starch out of the storm u right? traditionally?
2:04 am
when the storm hits the main land, it gets away from the water. it deintensifies. maybe it's a good thing. >> it does. but the upper air pattern is so ripe for this storm to stay healthy. the water is so warm off the seaboard that you are going to continually bring in a lot of warm, moist air into the center. yes, it's going to weaken from a category 3 or 4 down to a category 2 or 3 and let me explain, that's what eick was in houston, texas. so, if you are dealing with wind gusts 100 miles per hour out of the southeast in atlantic city because it's going up to the west, or in long island, you are dealing with something you haven't seen. you get big wind gusts out of the northwest, it's one thing. but when they are coming off the ocean, it's a completely different thing. so, this is almost unprecedented. like i said, in our lifetime. >> bill: all right. so everybody on the east coast has got to batten down the haches. put the wood over the windows if you are on the coast. get the supplies and the flashlights and everything ready because obviously power is going to go out, correct?
2:05 am
>> that's right. and it may be out for quite a while. there is going to be a lot of tree damage here. we have had a lot of water in the ground over the last couple of weeks from all the rain. and, in east to southeast wind will do more tree damage in the northwest wind because those trees take the northwest wind. we get it so often in the mid-atlantic states. they are not used to taking an east to southeast wind. a very damaging storm, i think this will probably be from cape hatteras north the most damaging storm we have had in 40 or 50 years. >> bill: i hope you are wrong. i'm praying you are wrong. check in with you tomorrow. john roberts on the outer banks on north carolina. you just heard joe bastardi and i guess in north carolina authorities have already issued the get out warning there, correct? >> they have, down in the atlantic beach where i got to know mayor trace cooper some. they issued evacuation order earlier today. don't see the track of the hurricane changing too much up here in dare county in kill devil hills, bill, they decided
2:06 am
to up the mandatory evacuation for visitors. now to residents as well. so, in all, more than 200,000 people will have to get off the island within the next 24 to 48 hours that hurricane is coming in sometime on saturday afternoon. there are some people who are still here. probably just lingering either vacationers or maybe they are residents who want to get one more day of beach in knowing they still have more time to get off the island. officials aren't pushing them off the island yet but probably do that soon. >> always people who want to leaf their homes and hunker down. police will forcibly remove those people, correct? >> they won't forcibly remove anyone, actually, to tell you the truth. a mandatory evacuation in north carolina is not exactly a mandatory evacuation. it's really a statement of you really should go. we really want you to go. you you could be putting your life in danger if you don't go. but they are not really about to go out and arrest anybody. >> bill: okay. that's interesting. >> very strong suggestion. >> bill: so it's a mandatory
2:07 am
evacuation but not really mandatory. it's heavily suggested because, as i said, there are always people that just don't want to leave their property. but, here, they are giving a 24-hour window so, this time tomorrow evening, they are expecting most people to be out of there? >> yeah, it's kind of if you don't go, well, you are either really tough old bird or you are crazy, or you are a member of the media and they pay you to be here. >> bill: what are you going to do? what are your orders? have you got it stay there until it hits? >> well, if we could just take a shot over the do you dune here,s the great thing about it the house there. our hotel is hidden behind this dune. four story hotel solid concrete block just off the beach. in such a location it's got a fairly low profile you can't really see it over the dune. so we're hoping, and this is our theory, bill, that any wind that comes off of the ocean here as joe was talking about is going to hit the top of that dune, kind of skip over the top.
2:08 am
>> bill: you are going to stay through the storm? >> we are going to stay. we're going to be here for the entire storm. >> bill: all right. >> check in with us on monday and see if we are still here. >> bill: i will. and of course we wish you the best. thank you for that report. next on the run down, can warren buffet save president obama and the billionaire is really trying. later, christine o'donnell enters the no spin zone. she continues to get hammered by the press even though she is not in the [ man ] behind every business is a "what if." what if we designed an electric motorcycle? what if we turned trash into surfboards? whatever your what if is, the new sprint biz 360 has custom solutions to make it happen, including mobile payment processing, instant hot spots, and powerful devices like the motorola photon 4g. so let's all keep asking the big what ifs. sprint business specialists can help you find the answers. sprint. america's favorite 4g network. trouble hearing on the phone? visit sprintrelay.com.
2:11 am
>> bill: impact segment tonight, can warren buffet save president obama. that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. is he trying. he is really trying to barack obama reelected. heading a fundraiser in new york city. if you have a spare 35,000 bucks you can get a v.i.p. ticket. why is he so emotionally vested in mr. obama. he was once a republican but switched parties in saying the democrats do a better job leveling the field for those who draw unlucky ticket in life. the "the washington post" reported that quote. buffet endorsed barack obama in 2008 but also raised money for hillary clinton during the primary campaign hedging his bets. in 2003, buffet agreed to advise california governor arnold schwarzenegger about economic issues and we all know how that turned out. california is on the verge of bankruptcy. just today, warn buffet announced he will invest $5 billion in the bank of
2:12 am
america, which is having a very hard time. on paper, buffet's investment looks to be shrewd for his company berkshire hathaway. full disclosure, i have stock in that company. is he stallworth for the democratic party and supports the income redistribution companies that president obama and the left champion. however. sea brilliant businessman. that's what makes it so confusing. president bush's economic policies have failed. spending spree racked up debt and employment is worse. level more taxation on the affluent and business owners while his enthusiasm for spending cuts is muted to say the least. warn buffet has to know that. raising taxes on spending in tough economic times is very
2:13 am
risky. buffet has to know it buffet also has to know that the zort of americans are losing faith according to a new rasmussen poll, just 14% of likely voters say the country is heading in the right direction. an astounding 79% believe the u.s.a. is on the wrong path and that number has to include many democrats. yet, even before knowing who barack obama's challenger will be, buffet is putting his hesitate teenage and money behind the president. so, -- prestige and money behind the president. it must be ideological play because it makes no business sense at all. ideology is why this country is in trouble. you may remember that i supported the tarp payments and took major heat from the far right for doing so. those payments stabilized financial and auto industries and much the money has been paid back. so when hindsight i was correct and i made my assessment based on problem-solving not ideology. as far as mr. obama's massive spending policy i was skeptical
2:14 am
but i gave it a chance. it failed. now warren buffet is telling me the feds should spend even more money and raise taxes to boot? you are wrong, warren. you are simply wrong. and that's the memo. now, reaction. joining us from washington laura ingraham. author of the big new best seller "of thee i zing." are you surprised by buffet's posture here? >> well, i can't psycho analyze him. trying to figure out the oracle of omaha on this issue is kind of difficult. but i think we have to look into the fact that, look, he just put in this huge amount of money into bank of america, right? if bank of america was going to go the way a lot of people are warning it could go, which is into more rocky territory, bill. i mean, we have people talking about the need for another tarp. i mean, you love tarp one you are going to love tarp 2. bank of america could be laying off not people in the thousands but in the tens of thousands and i bet that warren buffet probably knows that. i would like to know what he
2:15 am
said to president obama a couple of days ago in that phone call that president obama made to warren buffet to get economic advice. i don't know if he shared the information that he was thinking of investing in bank of america, but, if bank of america started to go south fast, you know, it might be even bigger, too big to fail. but that would be another disaster for the obama administration. >> bill: we have to speculate, and that's all we can do because we aren't privy to the call and the white house has made no information about that call public. but we have to speculate that that call had to do with bank bf america. and that, you know, warren buffet -- i looked at the deal and the deal is good for buffet. >> 6% return, guaranteed. >> bill: buying at low price but helping president obama. >> huge. >> bill: helping him out because, as you said, if b of a goes down the stock market is going to drop another 600 points, at least. the world is going to go you know what? it's out of control. the american people, that's it. if bank of america or any
2:16 am
company that large were to fold, that would be it for barack obama. so, buffet becomes almost. >> he becomes a savior. almost unelected power, right? >> bill: right. >> laura: money buys power. and that's just the fact of life. i'm not here to lecture about that. but, remember, he made a really shrewd, really well-timed investment in goldman sacks at the end of 2008. he got that money paid back. you know, before the -- you know, obama came into office. it was just paid back earlier this year. and he also made a really handsome return on that money. so, he has an enormous amount of power. i don't know, maybe it is kind of the end of his business life to, you know, wield this kind of power. it's different from being in the business world uniquely. so maybe he enjoys that bill on your tarp point not that we are going to relitigate tarp. if it was such success kneel ba ross ski says it wasn't a success because the consumer aspect didn't bear out. we shouldn't be in this trouble
2:17 am
with bank of america. if tarp was such a great success and people are talking about kampe 2. i think it goes company by company i believed president bush when he got out there and said look if we don't do this everything goes over the cliff and we have a depression. i don't know. i'm not there count the numbers but i believed president bush when he said it i'm happy that the tarp money has been mostly repaid back. so, i think i made the right call on that because i'm looking out for the folks here. >> g.e. got a lot of tarp money, too. he got two bites at the tarp apple even though they have hundreds of billions of dollars in receivables. >> bill: g.e. is in business with china immelt -- isn't that a scandal? >> it's such an outrage when we see. >> bill: it. >> we see this stuff happening. china knows it's well-positioned to move into the aviation market. and, frankly, could be in a position to trounce our one of our strongest and most vital manufacturing sectors in our country, which is aircraft manufacturing. so, we're going to see how that plays out.
2:18 am
but on buffet, is he going to have this big fundraiser coming up in, bill in the fall for the president. is he going to raise a lot more money. the republicans are way behind in the money game. they may be right on the issues. they have to raise a lot of money to compete. >> bill: directly ahead, christine o'donnell enters the no spin zone. that should be interesting. and, later, new york mayor bloomberg says no religious people should be at the upcoming 9/11 ceremony but why? right back with those reports. p
2:21 am
2:22 am
called trouble maker, let's do what it takes to make america great again. what was the biggest mistake you made in that campaign looking back? >> well, several of them. but i think the biggest mistake is that stupid ad. the reason why i tell it with such painstaking detail is because there is a lesson. this whole middle class movement that is propelling the tea party is fueled by the instincts and passion and gut of every day americans who have never been involved in the political process before. here i was, i won the primary because of that and then on the other side of the primary, i listened to the experts. didn't have confidence in my own gut instincts and went with that stupid ad which everything in me screamed that it was wrong. so i'm hoping that, you know, a wise man learns from his or her mistakes and even wiser learns from the mistakes of others. >> bill: let's run that ad so everybody knows what they are
2:23 am
talking about. >> i'm sure they know. >> i'm not a witch. i'm nothing you've heard. i'm you. none of us are perfect. but none of us can be happy with what we see all around us. i will go to washington and do what you would do. >> bill: you know, i'm looking at that now, i don't think that's so bad. the guy who designed it fred davis, your campaign hired to do this kind of media stuff, and the witch deal came out of some kind of interview you gave, what, 10 years ago to bill maher on his dopey show. >> right. >> bill: you came across as a woman who is saying look, this is ridiculous. i'm just like you are and i want to make things better. you thought that that was a dealt triment to what you wanted to do. >> it was the opening line overshadowed the message of the whole campaign. and i knew that going into it but, you know what? i think that it exploded to the level it did because when you your political opponent doesn't have a platform to stand on they
2:24 am
resort to the politics of personal destruction. >> bill: he had every media person in the world helping this guy coons. no doubt about that the guy who did this ad, fred davis, you kind of intimate in your book i had to read it quickly so maybe i didn't get the message properly he did it on purpose. he leaked it to the media on purpose. were you sabotaged by your own people. >> i don't know if he did but somebody leaked it before i saw it. and i respect fred davis. he usually does very good work. >> bill: you believe that you were sabotaged then in your campaign by somebody who leaked that to the media before it went out on tv. >> it leaked. i made it very clear after we produced the ad that i -- i didn't really want it to go -- i didn't want that one to be our first one and then all of a sudden it became. >> bill: it's on the internet and everybody is looking at it. >> exactly before i did. that was the interesting thing. >> bill: it's a lesson to all politicians and people in the public eye. >> right. >> bill: people can betray you and do nasty things and that hurt you. you also write about karl rove, one of our political analysts
2:25 am
here who didn't really think that you were qualified to be a senator and kind of said that and that hurt your campaign as well. >> well, the interesting thing is before the primary he came to delaware and met with all the tea party leaders in delaware saying whoever wins we have got to unite. and, yet, when it came time to listen to his own advice he just wouldn't. i recently extended the olive branch to karl rove. in order to make barack obama one term president we have got to unite. is he continuing to bash the tea party. i just don't get it. all i can think that maybe he does think that compromising is the only way republicans can win. but i say let me put forth his point of view. what i get from karl rove because is he on the program every week. he believes there are some people competitive against the machine like barack obama's and some people who just don't have the experience. it's about experience rove and
2:26 am
other establishment republicans think it's personal. go. >> that's why i wrote the book. people could understand i was qualified and they could no who i am. karl rove continued to put out misinformation about me and my background even though we gave him the information. the other thing about it is that i was ahead in the polls before the republican infighting. i was leading against the democratic opponent before my own party turned on me and cnn exit polling shows that was sell wouldn't have won either. so if we had united. if we had been able to duplicate what they did in kentucky where the establishment got behind the tea party candidate. it might have been a different outcome. but i'm still very proud because we put the political process back in the hands of the people. we were engaging people who have never been involved before. there is a mind set with so many that i'm not smart enough or i'm not rich enough as if the
2:27 am
political process only belongs to the ruling elite. i think that's what this whole tea party movement is beautifully about. >> ms. o'donnell the book is trouble maker. we appreciate you coming on the program tonight. plenty more ahead as the factor moves along this evening. why are religious people being banned from the 9/11 events in new york city. culture warriors on the case. dr. kelly on whether dr. phil got a woman convicted of child abuse. compelling story in the kelly file. you go next if you had a hoveround power chair? the statue of liberty? the grand canyon? it's all possible with a hoveround. tom: hi i'm tom kruse, inventor and founder of hoveround. when we say you're free to see the world, we mean it. call today and get a free hoveround information kit that includes a video and full color brochure. dennis celorie: "it's by far the best chair i've ever owned." terri: "last year, 9 out of 10 people got their hoveround for little or no money." jim plunkitt: "no cost. absolutely no cost to me." breaking news...when you call today, we'll include a free hoveround collapsible grabber with
2:28 am
2:30 am
>> bill: culture warrior segment tonight, new york's mayor bloomberg says no to religious people attending the 9/11 tenth anniversary events. and the reaction to the i view with christine o'donnell. here now dagen mcdowell in for gresham carlson tonight and margaret hoover author of the new big book "american individualism." christine o'donnell believes that the establishment republicans led by karl rove really destroyed her campaign. do you see it that way. >> no, not at all. in fact, she was talked about
2:31 am
the lessons the worst thing she did was that ad. the real lesson from the 2010 senate races christine o'donnell and sharon angle is that the tea party nominated people that couldn't get elected in the general election because they simply didn't represent the majority of their state. and that was the -- the lessen wasn't anything she did. she just wasn't a candidate that was a, credible, mike castle would have won. >> bill: why wasn't she credible. >> didn't have a lot of experience. not like she was a small business owner. road the wave of the tea party. questionable expenses. she had her questionable background. >> nearly two dozen appearances on she made on politically incorrect and comments didn't help. she in your interview proved karl rove's point. she basically said i didn't know what i was doing. i was taking advantage of with this ad that ran. she didn't. >> bill: she hired someone. >> didn't like it and didn't put her foot down. >> bill: didn't control the process. you have to admit the media really hammered this woman and gave her opponent a big
2:32 am
advantage. was there any gender part of this from the media i saw it as liberal play. conservative woman, liberals didn't like her. you see it with palin and bachmann and o'donnell. that's what i thought it was. >> in our politics today, because there are so few women in politics women do get treated differently than men. we have seen it with michele bachmann. however it, cuts both way. >> conservative women get treated differently. >> it can be used to their advantage and gut against them it can go both ways. the criticisms of christine o'donnell were not gender based but they were based on her own missteps. >> bill: gender based? >> absolutely not. had nothing with her being a woman. everything with being a conservative. the left took her out. >> bill: now, here in new york city a n. a couple of weeks we will have 9/11 lesson 10th anniversary which is a sad and somber moment. you would think there would be religious people involved with that because of the deaths of 3,000 people here in the new york city. mayor bloomberg says no. roll the tape. >> there is an awful lot of
2:33 am
people who would like to participate you just can't do that. once you taupe so the argument here is elected officials and those who were there at the time. >> bill: see, i think that's a big mistake so does "the new york post." it's appropriate to have a prayer or part of this memorial if you will based upon it was attack on our country. a lot of our country it's a religious based war. it's jihad against america. you say ms. mcdonnell? >> i say are absolutely right. the fact that there hasn't been invocation or participation by the clergy or spiritual leaders in the nine years past does not make it right. it was faith that got this country through this horrible time. >> bill: why do you think that mayor bloomberg a secularist doesn't want to have a presence. i think they should have a catholic priest, a rabbi. i think they should have an imam. a muslim guy there. >> i don't think he wants to
2:34 am
make that decision. >> bill: why not? who is going to object? >> there will be -- there are bound to be some people who would object. >> bill: so minor, so few. >> i totally agree with you. >> the thing to keep in mind is that the first gathering of americans in new york after 9/11 was at yankee stadium and it was a prayer for america. it was a massive interfaith prayer ceremony. it was the spiritual solace that got this city and the country through that time. mayor bloomberg, you are right, he is a secularists. this reflects his personal sensibilities. hes ha not involved religion in the ceremony not a single there since he has been there encourage the families if they want religious leaders at that ceremony. mayor bloomberg has said this is about the families. let the families put out a statement that they want religious clergy, spiritual leaders to be involved. >> mayor bloomberg lives in a secular bubble the rest of this country does not. >> bill: you both agree that bloomberg is making a big
2:35 am
mistake here and the remedy to the mistake would have some kind of petition probably on the internet signed by most of the families that want some kind of religious. >> phone calls from those families. >> the families are organized. >> bill: the media would never know about that got to be something that the media can get ahold of. >> families are organized. they can put out a public statement and sign a letter. some sort of sign a letter saying we want it. >> or how about having inner faith service our own. if he won't do it. everybody else should get together and do it. >> bill: culture warriors, everybody. when we come right back, megyn kelly child abuse case played out on the dr. phil program. >> how much do you know about carnage? those reports moments away as the factor continues all across the u.s.a. and all around the world. let me tell you about a very important phone call i made.

>> bill: thanks for staying with us. i'm bill o'reilly in the kelly file segment tonight, a bizarre child abuse case played out on the dr. phil show. a woman appeared with dr. phil on a program about bad decisions made by mothers. apparently ms. begley used extreme discipline on her adopted 6-year-old son. >> why did you lie to me? >> i didn't mean to -- >> you didn't want to get in trouble. does it work to lie to me? >> no. >> what happens when you lie to me? >> i get hot sauce. >> you get hot sauce. what happens to me. >> i get a cold shower. >> open. first off, why are you getting a cold shower? [crying. [. >> because -- you pulled three cards today!
2:40 am
ing that is unacceptable behavior. >> bill: awful. hard to watch. this week jessica baggily the woman there was found guilty of child abuse. here now anchor megyn kelly. that show was last november 10th. the police immediately swung into action. >> they received some complaints from people who watched the videotape and watched this program that they, the police, then went and arrested her and charged her with child abuse. the reaction from regular folks who were seeing this video posted. >> then, the local police in anchorage arrest her, right? >> for child abuse. misdemeanor child abuse. >> misdemeanor, interesting. and then they have a jury trial, correct? >> yeah. and she was found guilty there was a real question about whether she would. this has sparked such a nationwide debate on whether you draw the line between discipline of a child and cross over into abuse. >> bill: that's crazy. >> i guarantee you you have viewers saying you are crazy for saying that. >> bill: not in my audience. >> you are wrong. let me start with this.
2:41 am
i agree with you. i think it's abusive. >> bill: i will show you the emails tomorrow. i guarantee you 5 to 6 to 1. pouring hot tabasco sauce in a kid's throat and putting him in a cold shower and he is 5. >> did i this story three times on my show. we crossed over this. couple of related controversies to it the emails we were getting suggested that people who had been spanked by their parents who had the belt across the bottom who had soap put in their mouths which they argue is worse than hot sauce which is something you do actually eat, unlike soap. who said it happened to me, it happened to my brothers and sisters. at the present time t. wasn't abuse then, it isn't now. >> bill: i'm a tough guy. you know, i believe in accountability on children's part but you don't do that to a 5-year-old child. that is awful. >> the woman's defense is that she has adopted this child when he was 5 or 6 years old from russia. he has attachment disorder common from russian children who have had no love or no contact really no nurturing for the first five or six years.
2:42 am
the point is that the regular discipline didn't work with him. i'm not defending it. i want to make this clear. i don't agree with in all. i don't agree with spanking or any of that i agree with the verdict. she should have been found guilty. i see the argument on the other side which he couldn't be controlled versus with a normal techniques and that this was the only thing that was working for a mother who took a boy out of an orphanage who nobody wanted and tried to give him a shot and tried to integrate him and twin brother into her family already had four children. she still has him. he shoonts parenting classes. she was reaching out for help. >> bill: she still has the boy? the boy is still had in her custody. >> yes. >> she may be get sentenced to prison. >> she could be. probably not. >> bill: this woman needs classes in child rearing and social services got -- has got to weigh in. >> they have got to watch this. >> bill: you don't discipline children by torturing them. >> not only that if you want to give the kid a whack, okay. you don't torture them by
