3:25 am
this is a fascinating subject. does a leader need some kind of mental illness to be effective? >> well, i wouldn't say that they have to have it. what i found was that there's some benefits to having mild to moderate depression and mania when you look at scientific research and when you apply that to historical leaders, it seems many of our great crisis leaders did have some of those symptoms. >> let's look at through some of these traits that would actually influence strong leadership and i'll throw these up on the screen and you can take us through some of these. empathy and realism would be enhanced, you say that j.f.k. and fdr might have benefited from it. >> they mainly had manic symptoms. maybe j.f.k. had depression, too. primarily, there are mania symptoms as part of their personality which are mild but there may have enhanced their resilience and maybe their creativity which is more of what mania enhances. depression which improves
3:26 am
realism and empathy is a kind of thing that may be more relevant for leaders like churchill and lincoln who are well established to have severe depression. although it's less well established, i provide evidence that that reasonable case can be made for gandhi and martin luther king for having depression. >> why do these traits help leaders be more effective? >> well, the scientific studies show these traits compared to normal people are present in the general population. so, for instance, if you take a group of people who have mild depression, they're more realistic in their experimental assessment of their control over their environment than normal people who have what psychologists call a mild, positive illusion. they have a sense of more control than they really do. so if these kinds of facts are true, then they should apply to historical leaders as well as the general population. and that may be why someone like churchill might have been more realistic in assessing things than someone like chamberlain who is mentally healthy.
3:27 am
>> you go through some historical examples like we just did. what about president obama? people i'm sure sitting back saying to themselves, how does he fit into all of this? is he too much of a normal guy to be an effective leader? >> well, he said that he's well adjusted and certainly in a 2008 campaign, he was packaged as a very balanced, calm, no drama temperament. and, you know, it will take 50 years for us to be able to assess anyone well in regards to whether or not they have mental illnesses. that's why most of my figures are from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century. but what i can say is that if he or any other person really wants to emphasize being normal and average, that may connect to voters but may not be the kind of traits that will help a leader in crisis times such as we live in today. >> so leaders need to be a little off to be effective. fascinating stuff, doctor. thanks so much. the book is "a first rate

>> next sunday marks the tenth anniversary of 9-11 and many americans across the country will gather to commemorate. but here in new york, city members of the clergy are not welcome at the event. >> everybody would like to participate and the bottom line is everybody cannot participate. there isn't room. there isn't time. and in some cases, it's just not appropriate. >> bloomberg less than a year ago supported an islamic mosque and community center being built just steps away from ground zero. a new york city council member and pastor at new life outreach international and richard land is with the southern baptist convention. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> mr. land, what do you think about the decision from mayor bloomberg and why do you think he came to this decision?
5:25 am
>> i think it's outrageous. you know, when the event happened ten years ago, the clergy was welcomed, chaplains lost their lives responding to those who were in need at ground zero and if we had another attack, the clergy would be welcome again. this is just an outrageous decision by someone who is blinded by his secular seculari. >> fernando, the mayor says he wants to keep the focus on the victims' families. isn't that the same opinion you share? don't you want to keep the focus not necessarily on various religions, but on the victims' families? >> exactly. the fact of the matter is, it was prayer that got the families through the tragedy. it is prayer that continues to get the families through the loss and the grieving that they still experience. james madison called prayer the perfect remedy. it's been part of our american
5:26 am
history to have prayer as part of the solution when we go through times like this. >> mr. land, those supporters that mayor bloomberg's decision say, well, let's say, for example, you do allow a catholic priest, then doesn't it open the door to all religions and don't you have to support and represent all religions and you know what would happen then? >> sure. well, i think that's a lewd chris argument. let's say we had a catholic priest, jewish rabbi, and ema'am. that would represent over 90% of the people in new york city and that's a pretty good representation. i think it's just outrageous. the mistake that he's making is we have a secular state, but we don't have a secular society. over 85% of americans claim some form of affiliation with the christian faith and 61% say

their religion is very important in their lives. we're not france, mr. bloomberg. we're not france. we're the united states of america. >> mr. cabrera, last word on this. do you sense this is a final decision by the mayor and where do you go from here? >> i would hope not because the fact is that most americans are asking for this. we were all affected by what took place on 9-11 and he needs to hear the voice of the american people, especially new yorkers. >> all right. fernando, richard, we appreciate you both being here. have a great weekend. we want to hear from you folks on this. let us know how you feel, tweet me. let us know on the e-mail. coming up, brand-new jobless numbers for the entire month of august set to be released in minutes. it could make a huge splash in washington with the president's major jobs speech a few days away now. we'll have them for you next. plus, this military couple got married at the courthouse before being whisked off to war. now the husband has a huge

with the referee's calls. and you see what ensued. those are your headlines. >> thanks so much. listen to this story, one couple first met while serving overseas in iraq. but because the ongoing war and their duties to the army, they had to get married without a traditional wedding ceremony. >> that is until this happened. >> surprise! >> i present to you, mr. and mrs. myers. >> that is one heck of a kiss. last saturday he surprised his wife with the wedding of her dreams. the newlyweds live with us from seattle. congratulations to you both. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> tell us about that kiss. how surprised, how happy were you? >> i was on cloud nine. >> i can imagine. how in the world did you manage to pull this off?

i know how difficult it must be to plan a wedding. all sorts of planning that goes. that's why men usually stay away from it all. >> juliet: why are you looking at me? >> i'm just staring. they don't get involved in it. how did you manage to pull this off given the duties serving your country at the time? >> it wasn't easy. with the help of her family, we pulled it off. >> juliet: you guys, back in july of 2010, you were supposed to get married in vegas, but it didn't happen, so you did it at a courthouse. she always wanted the wedding. so your husband went kind of behind closed doors. you didn't have any pictures from your initial wedding because you lost the camera. so he goes behind closed doors and he gets everybody all lined up. you had invitations printed up, a little reception there. you threw the bouquet, all of that traditional stuff. where is the honeymoon? are you going to be able to have a honeymoon? >> probably later. no time soon 'cause we don't have any more leave. so we're not taking a honeymoon soon. >> juliet: what did you think

was happening there? where did you think you were going? >> i actually thought i was going to a church festival. my family told me we were going to a festival and hurry up and get dressed and come to the church. >> you knew something was up, right? 'cause you were at the hair salon and the woman at the salon asked you who was getting married? >> yeah. i was like, i'm the only one in the room that's married, so it can't be me. >> congratulations to the happy couple. what a great story you'll have to tell for generations. good luck to you, thank you both for your service to this country. >> thank you guys. >> that's four tours of service between them in this country for us. thank you guys so much. congratulations. >> juliet: that's really a cool story. all right. we'll get into some seriously not happy stuff. breaking news right now, zero jobs added in august. that's the worst performance in more than a year. the president is going to be speaking about his plan, what is the plan?

>> welcome back. we just shared that breaking news with you. the new numbers showing unemployment unchanged at 9.1%. added zero jobs. zero jobs last month. so what's the president's plan come next thursday? he needs specifics this morning. a former chief speech writer for president george w. bush and a columnist for the "wall street journal" and joins us this morning. we'll talk about something else in just a moment. but first, your reaction to those numbers. what can the president say next thursday to try to stem this tide? we saw those earlier june and july numbers revised down. it's still trending down. >> right. look, it's important not to read too much into monthly jobs numbers. but we've had fairly stagnant job growth. it's why unemployment is 9%
5:44 am
level. and i don't think he has anything to say. >> when i look at those, you say not to read too much into those, but it's hard for me seeing zero jobs created in august, when you compare that with the 300,000 jobs that we need to just keep up. >> i think what i'm saying is i would look more at the last year and a half. it's not a good story. it's very, very -- it's a bad story. it's why people are concerned. it's why he's giving a speech. when you give a speech, people forget we're debating whether he did it on purpose, to have it on the republican night. the first thing about a speech is you have to have something to say. >> that's the big question. as a former speech writer for president bush, you're looking ahead to next thursday. what can the president say? is there something that he can say that's backed up by actual specifics and actual action or are we going to hear more of the same? >> i don't think he can. i think the thing that would be pleasing maybe to markets is to hear washington doesn't create jobs, that we added some burdens on businesses, and so forth and we're addressing those. that's not going to happen. the bubble that people talk about in the white house, i think a lot of this is just
5:45 am
president obama. >> let's talk about that. you wrote a piece in the "wall street journal" about the white house in a bubble. this idea that when perhaps president obama is behind closed doors there, he's insulated, maybe he's not listening. it seemed like he was slightly energized when he got on the bus tour a few weeks ago and he was actually talking to people who were angry, fed up and having a discussion with him. then he goes back to washington. you argue this bubble is maybe keeping him insulated? >> i think the bubble is president obama's bubble. when i was in the white house, everyone talks about the bubble. i saw a lot of other people in their own bubbles. the white house, look, the normal mechanism for people is to be cautious. they don't do this because, don't do this because. look where we handled this speech. there is no way that a decision to schedule a speech on the night of a republican debate, there is no way that didn't go to the president himself. so what are we talking about? all the atmospherics. the second part is, now it's a big speech. president obama recently has
5:46 am
looked for the grand stage and the grand stage these days seems to diminish him. if he doesn't have a speech that's up to the expectations that's really going to do something, he's in trouble. >> one of the things you point out in your piece, and i think is interesting, is that the liberals have been sitting back thinking that the president, even jon stewart on the daily show, he thinks the president may be in this for the long game, that he's sort of like a it jedi master working the strings behind the scenes and this is eventually going to happen down the line. but you're saying that doesn't seem to be the case. there is no long game at all. >> when people talk about the long game, it means the short game isn't working. anyone could talk about the long game. the long game, there is too many variables. i don't think there is anything he can do, actually, to increase unemployment substantially over the next year and a half. and so i'm just wondering, is this more about opening the campaign, blaming congress for things, or is it really about getting americans back to work? >> i would love to see him call
5:47 am
up speaker boehner, get out on a podium together and say we're going to share the limelight and get this done. a big, bold move from congress and -- >> here is what we have. we have president obama saying let's take the politics out of the situation. let's stop washington as usual. what does he do? he schedules a debate speech for the night the republicans are having a debate. >> william, thanks so much. and great piece. we appreciate you joining us. >> thank you. >> coming up here on the show, when we come back, joshua radin performing one of his latest hits out on our plaza, wrapping up the "fox & friends" all american summer concert series. summer is over, folks. don't go anywhere. we'll taste the last bit of it, coming up on the show. first, let's check in with bill hemmer for what's coming up at the top of the hour. >> we're hanging on to a couple days. clinging there with our fingernails. breaking news on the jobs front. it's the story of the year. it's been the story for three years. new fox polling with surprising numbers for the women in the republican party.
