>> good morning, everybody. thank you so much for joining us this morning. as we prepare for this very momentous weekend here. >> of course, on sunday, like most of you, your focus will be on the world trade, shanksville and the pentagon. 10 years since attacks. steve doocy has gone downtown appropriately. you have the terror threat to talk about, the speech to talk about and a look back at 10 years to focus on. >> that's right. we'll start with the headline here on "the daily news" and what everybody is talking about in new york city. a september 11th terror threat. we start with the fox news alert. the department of homeland security calls it a specific, credible but unconfirmed terror threat in new york city and washington, d.c. federal agents and police now looking for three al-qaida terrorists, perhaps believed to be planning a car or a truck bomb around the 10th anniversary
3:02 am
of the september 11th attacks. intel officials say the suspects, one believed to be a u.s. citizen, flew to the united states last month possibly from afghanistan. investigators say they were sent by al-qaida leader who vowed to get revenge for the death of bin laden. despite the threat, the mayor of new york city said the september 11th ceremonies will go on as planned. >> you'll probably see more bag searches than you normally do. you can rest assured that our bridges and tunnels, you'll probably see a few more uniformed personnel. hopefully it turns out that this is not anything. i can tell you our ceremonies will go on over the weekend exactly the way they were planned. >> there were concerns about several rental trucks, u hauls being reported stolen in kansas city, missouri, but those trucks have been recovered and apparently not linked to the threat. meanwhile, right now, let's bring in former senior military intelligence officer for the f.b.i.'s joint terrorism task
3:03 am
force, steven rogers who joins us right here at ground zero. good morning. >> good morning to you. >> specific and credible. we know what that means. they got some information. these three guys would like to blow up some car bombs or truck bombs but it's unconfirmed. what's that mean? >> credible threats, credible information is information you more than likely got from a human source. what they have to do now is get corroboration from, perhaps, other human sources or from intelligence. that's why it's unconfirmed. >> what we do understand as well is apparently these three guys may have come in in the last couple of weeks or so into the united states. they all speak arabic and english. we have a description of them but we don't know their names. >> well, they don't know their names because that's when we go down, it's a credible threat but who are these people? and i got to tell you, right now, as we speak, i'm sure that law enforcement is looking at information that was gathered by seal team 6 in pakistan and i'm sure that they are reviewing the
3:04 am
times square bombing attempt in 2010. and they're going to see if there's any similarity in any of that intelligence that they have. for example, how would they get into any city across the country? what are the possible targets? a lot of work involved. it's a daunting task but good thing they released the information. >> absolutely. when i drove into new york city this morning, they had extra security at the bridges and the tunnels but what if the truck bomb or the car bomb is already in new york city and it doesn't go through those points? >> you're absolutely right. this is why i believe there's been some criticism from some quarters as to why intelligence and law enforcement agencies have released this information. i'll tell you, steve, the greatest asset we now have are the people in this country. they need to make a telephone call, alert someone if their instinct is saying what i see, what i hear is not right. i got to make that call. >> thank you very much for joining us today and brian and
3:05 am
ali, his last point is really important. if you see something, say something. that's what the mayor of new york city and the police commissioner said last night at their 9:00 press briefing. >> it's also important, too, that local authorities are making the announcement even though federal authorities said they discovered the plot because it's truly going to be stopped, if it's going to take place amongst the nypd and their counterterrorist task force. >> you know what? i actually have seen something suspicious this summer twice and i'll talk more about it. but something -- two times this summer, something strange happened to me in a taxi where the taxi drivers did not know where i wanted to go. a very regular street in new york city and i thought something's up and now that i hear about car bombs, i'll tell you more about that. >> something suspicious. 311, something about to explode, 911. >> good. i will call those later. >> did you watch the speech last night? >> of course, yes! let's talk about what the president said last night. basically, he laid out his plan and it was very comprehensive one for how to get the country
3:06 am
churning out jobs again. here are some of the details. it would be a $447 billion plan but he says it's paid for. we'll explain that. he says that it extends payroll tax cuts for most workers, it gives tax credits to employers for companies that will hire unemployed people for six months or more and returning veterans and extends unemployment insurance another year for so many millions of americans who are out of work right now. homeowners with refinancing. >> i don't know how that is. are they going to cut down the principle? are they going to be giving them two or three months off from making their payments, how do people feel about that that are making their payments in the same size house? >> he didn't spell out the details of those. that was the goal. he talked about infrastructure projects dealing with bridges and tunnels and roads, transportation projects and school renovation projects that he says are ready to go. >> yeah. and on top of that, you know, talking about fridge repairs, talking about road repairs, he's talking about new construction
3:07 am
that's relatively general and he had one theme, steve, and it's pretty consistent. he launched this plan, i don't think he knows how it's being paid for, that's up to the super committee who has so much free time they can handle this, the super committee to come up with a payment plan. the president still even though he hasn't finished the plan wants it passed. i got that idea. let's listen. >> i'm sending this congress a plan that you should pass this plan right away, you should pass it right away. this time, you should pass it again right away. now is not the time to carve out an exception and raise middle class taxes which is why you should pass this bill right away. this plan is the right thing to do right now. you should pass it! >> interesting tone, right? i mean, he's not saying i hope you pass it or i implore you to pass it. he's taking a very authoritative tone with them. >> kind of almost like one of those guys on a late night infomercial, act before midnight! you should pass it right away.
3:08 am
in all, he said that phrase about -- pass it right away, 18 times. i heard somebody say last night on the radio. ok, so last night, he's saying you should pass it right away 18 times. but we have heard him say over and over the same thing he said last night where his focus is jobs, here's a little historical montage. watch. >> jobs must be our number one focus in 2010. that's why my administration remains focused every single day on pushing this economy forward. all these investments in innovation, education and infrastructure will make america a better place to do business and create jobs. and making sure jobs are available is the first thing i think about when i wake up in the morning and the last thing i think about when i go to bed each night. not a day goes by that i'm not focused on your jobs, your hopes and your dreams. and in the coming months, i'll continue also to fight for what
3:09 am
the american people care most about. new jobs, higher wages, and faster economic growth. >> by the way, it wasn't a bunch of republicans saying you got us nowhere. there was some positive comments coming out of the leadership when john boehner came forward and said this program and proposal merits consideration. eric cantor said some positive things, you'll hear from him live in our show. the republicans generally according to "the new york times" likes a number of the president's ideas. i thought an interesting quote came from texas which is true, this is what i thought. i agreed with some of it but my brain quit calculating on the number because it got so big! >> yeah. no kidding. and the other thing is while the president and the president's men had said earlier in the day, don't worry about it. it's half a trillion dollars but it's all paid for, you know, remember harry truman always said the buck stops here? the president is passing the buck when it comes to how to pay for it because he said ok, i want to spend $447 billion. but i'm going to have the super
3:10 am
committee figure out where those cuts are going to come from kick the can down the road. jeb henserling who is on the super committee although he doesn't wear a cape said by asking the committee to increase the target to cover the full cost of his plan, the president is essentially asking a committee designed to reduce the deficit to pay for yet another round of stimulus. this proposal would make the already arduous challenge of finding bipartisan agreement on deficit reduction nearly impossible. it's not the role of this committee to spend more money we don't have on jobs we don't get. >> and we remember how well the debt debate went when it was bipartisan effort. but let's hope that the super committee has some ideas. >> it did remind me a little bit of an infomercial, steve. keep in mind, i'm very is y susceptible, i'm the guy with three garden weasels. when they tell me to buy now, i jump to attention. >> you know that special ladder that can bend in all sorts of --

estimates, more than three million depending on who you talk to, the outage was triggered yesterday afternoon, 4:00 when an electrical worker removed a piece of monitoring equipment at a power substation in southwest arizona. that's what caused all this. basically just an accident, human error. officials at the power company say two reactors at both of california's nuclear power plants went off line after losing electricity but they're safe. they had the back up power systems that kept those cool and kept it cool for the workers and people nearby so there's no threat there. if you talk to the power authority, they say it's not a deliberate act and hope to get everybody back on soon. take a listen. >> this is an event that's never occurred in san diego before with a complete blackout of the system and unfortunately, caused by an event in another state but we're going to work through it. we thank you for your patience. and look forward to getting you back to service as soon as possible. >> again, that's from the san

washington, d.c. people in shanksville, people across the country stronger. not weaker. we become resolute, not fearful. we become angry, not cowerring and so i'm confident based upon hearing mayor bloomberg last night, commissioner ray kelly who have done a tremendous job keeping new york city safe for many years that they're doing all the things that are necessary. the f.b.i. was there. they're on this, they're keeping our city safe. we will go forward in a solemn way and observe the death of our friends and family and the sacrifice of the people who attempted to avenge their deaths and continue to bring justice in the world. >> sure. now, ok, so the news out last night was that there might be the three guys, they speak arabic, they speak english, one could be an american citizen although our department of justice sources say that they got no information about the three guys being here, that that

5:27 am
they went up 80 floors, they went up 90 floors to save us. we're going to be strong in their memory and we're going to be strong going forward. so we understand the threat. the threat continues. it will continue for our lifetime. but at the same time, our solemn vow, to be strong. to be great americans, to move forward in their memory and in honor of their sacrifice and their deaths, that's the message of 9/11. and so we're not afraid. we can't be afraid. we have to be happy at their lives and happy at our great american prospects in the next century. and the evidence is behind us. out of fear and desperation, success and ultimately victory. >> well put. >> absolutely. >> and as the mayor said last night, effectively he said we're all in this together because if you see anything, say something. >> say something. and he gave me great confidence and he gave all new yorkers and americans great confidence. he and ray kelly. >> indeed. all right. peter johnson jr., thank you

if you think that the government is not the answer and that, you know, the stimulus, whatever it accomplished over the last couple of years, it certainly didn't perform as advertised in keeping unemployment under 8%. you're thinking why are we going down this road again? so i'm not sure it changed a lot of minds. one of the interesting things, though, is that the republicans and i suspect it's because of the polls and the general revulsion with the performance of all of washington and the debt ceiling crisis, both the white house and the republicans aren't immediately rejecting each other. the president was at pains to say, look, this is a lot of republican ideas in here. i'm trying to meet you half way. and the republicans are not dismissing it out of hand and i think it's possible that some of this stuff like tax breaks for small business. cutting regulation, long term job training like they have in georgia, i think some of that might get passed. >> i want you to hear gene sperling who was on with us a short time ago. we asked him, who's paying for

5:36 am
is going to be the same old stuff which is closing tax loopholes on things like corporate jets, raising tax rates on the wealthy. it didn't fly before. it probably won't fly this time. and that's probably the weakest part of what he had to say last night. i loved the idea of him saying let's have the little short term stimulus for long term budget cuts and if those were spending cuts, i think a lot of people might buy on to the idea but if it's just going to be more of raising taxes on the wealthy, i don't know why it would succeed in september when it utterly failed in august. >> sure. now, chris, you know a thing or two about presidential debates and you've been at -- you were at fox when a couple of weeks ago, i'm sure you were watching, a couple of nights ago over on msnbc when they hosted the republican candidates and i don't know if you picked up a left wing bias in some of the questions but bernie goldberg talked to bill o'reilly about some bias that he saw. watch this.

well, brian williams did ask that question about a different controversial subject. personally, i don't care if he's for the death -- if he's against the death penalty. in his private life, but not as a moderator of a presidential debate. >> well, chris, what do you think? >> i think that bernie goldberg was 100% right. and it wasn't only that question, there was a bunch of questions that i thought -- that there was a left wing bias, it's the only -- a liberal bias, that's the only way you can describe it, that they came -- and the interesting thing is i think if you were to say to brian williams, isn't that a loaded question or you presented the alternative that bernie goldberg did there? would you ask a liberal politician about sleeping at night when you favor abortion? or, you know, choice? he wouldn't even understand it. it is so built into the drinking water, if you will, in some of these liberal outlets that they

don't even understand it happens and if you watch that debate, it's just a different set of questions than they would have asked democratic candidates and not just because of the fact that these are conservatives and it's conservative issues but i just think that there is a bias against conservatives in the mainstream media. i absolutely agree with bernie goldberg on that. >> only thing that's on my mind right now is find out what guests you have on sunday. >> well, we're going to h obvio day. we're going to do three hours of "fox news sunday" and you can see some of the people that will be there and a lot more. donald rumsfeld, john mccain, joe lieberman, mike rogers, rudy giuliani and dianne feinstein, on and on and on, we're going to cover all of the events in -- at ground zero in new york, to the pentagon in shanksville with those brave passengers on flight united 93 crashed the plane so it wouldn't be used as a weapon in washington. we're going to look back at what happened on that day. we're going to look over the last 10 years and look forward on the key issues of homeland
