joining us is jeff martinez who was there and witnessed the crash. he joins us, tell us what you saw. >> yes. hi, greta. we're camping in an rv spot two blocks from the main grandstand. we're there watching races. a great day, seeing air shows and everything. last race of the day, everything was going good. all of a sudden, the plane veered to the right z heading straight for the rv park. i said oh, my gochld i grabbed my daughter and we moved to the side. i thought goitsing to hit us. then it went straight down before the grandstand. i didn't -- wasn't an explosive. i did see debris, smoke. i knew it was right by the grandstand. and a lot of people have got to be injured with that. but thank god nothing happened to us. we made it okay. >> and we've been listening to
8:01 pm
and heard a press conference. i don't know if you heard it and talked to others but some people thought, and i under line the word thought there might have been mechanical issue. i understand the pilot was an older gentleman. i understand, also, on the ground perception could be different but have you heard anything, anyone saying anything about what he or she saw? >> you know, i'm a pilot myself. i would say that same thing. everything going great. they did two laps. he was zooming and did a sharp turn right. it came, again, the plane turned right coming toward us where the grand grand. and just nosed straight down. i don't know. something had to go wrong for it to turn that fast. you know? >> greta: for viewers that don't understand this, explain it to them. >> it's been amazing event for reno. we've had it every year for 30
8:02 pm
years and thousands of people come out and watch this. and yesterday, the 7-year-old daughter and i were in the stands and watched thunder birds i'm thinking what if we were there today when that happened. but thank god, we weren't. it's a great event for reno. every couple years something like this happens but nothing to this scale. you know planes are into the grandstand or just below it. our thoughts to the victims out there. i hear 75 injured and maybe 25 critical. it's just awful. awful day. >> greta: and we've been listening to a press conference. the man described the pilot of the plane who died as a close, personal friend. and you know, you can hear in his voice. i understand it's a bit of a legend in this plane racing. have you ever heard of him before? >> yes. yes.
8:03 pm
and i've been hearing about them. gallopping ghost, they call them. it's an old t 51. it's amazing and the planes fly 500-800 feet off the ground going 400 miles per hour around the course. you know? and they try to make it safe. and all around, it's now 400 miles per hour. and this pilot from florida is gallopping government. i don't know what happened. he was flying. i saw him in formation. they took off to the race like everything is normal, then, all of a sudden, this plane just takes a hard right turn coming at us. and that is when i just grabbed everybody. i thought is bo -- it's going to hit us. i saw debris and everything. oh, my god. just crazy out here. >> greta: we're learning more and more about the plane and are scrambling to get more information of the p 51

8:05 pm
and everything was going g maybe did one, two laps. then, all of a sudden like in the middle of the grandstand this plane just made a hard right turn and came straight for the grandstand and toward our rv park where we can see them. and i thought it's going to come toward us, like i said, then it just dives straight down. i saw, debris, smoke, and everything. i said "oh my god". we've got to be people hurting. they announced any medical people out there, come, help. it was just mayhem out here for a little bit. >> greta: jeff, thank you. >> thank you, greta. >> so, what are we learning about this p-51 mustang plane? joining us is general bob scales good evening, sir. >> hi, greta. >> greta: terrible night in nevada. terrible. spectators and pilot and we're getting more news nothing but
8:06 pm
grim news. and what can you tell me about this p-51 mustang? >> it is made by north american aircraft corporation probably the most-famous american fighter plane in world war ii. the first plane we put in the air over european area of operation that could outfight the best fighter planes the germans had but in addition, it had fuel capacity to escort bombers, b 17s and b 24s to berlin and back. beginning march, 1944, the casualty rights for crews plummeted and p-51 became the courage of the fleet but also the guardian angel of our formation over europe. >> greta: looking at the planes they look alike. i had been fortunate to chase an f-16. i can see how it's different. but why was this one so popular? it looks frankly just like an
8:07 pm
old plane to me. >> well, this, united states wasn't doing well in air plain design until 1943 when, because most fighter planes were under powered so what the army air corps did is they took a merlin engine from royal air force, stuck it into the p-51. overnight this thing performance of the aircraft became remarkable. and what what is more remarkable is that it was an outstanding dog fighter from the deck, all the way up to 25 and 30,000 feet. it's not only fastest and best turning and most versatile fighter of the war with the best air to air ratio but could fly as the old saying goes throughout the entire enblem. >> what plane replaced it?. >> the plane continued to fly into korean warks greta. it wasn't retired from
8:08 pm
international guard in the 1950s. the plane replacing was another north american product f 86 sabre jet which is what most of our aces flew in core rea. this airplane is probably the most storied and famous in world war ii. it's a legend. as many pilots will tell you, it looked cool. the p-51 you can sigh about a piece of military equipment, a true work of art. it's the most-venerated fighter plane. >> greta: how many, could there be left of this plane? >> great question. surprisingly there are great many left because after world war ii, you can get them for a song in the late 40s and early 50s so there is between 50-00 left z many other world war ii

to raise revenue because we also need to inves in the traditional pillars of our success. we need to do all three of those things at once. one of the things we found in doing the book, we went around to manufacturers in this country. it's hard to find one who doesn't tell you i can't find two, do the kind of high skilled things we need. that's why so much of the infamous on our book is on education. my view, bill, we are in a long-term problem. this didn't just start in 2008 that's argument of the book inner city schools in particular and i taught in one so i know what i'm talking about are in trouble. right now you have $10,300 in invested in taxpayer money in every single public school student that's enormous record breaking amount of money. bush starred it and continued it
8:15 pm
i will submit to you and you say we need more. i say no, we don't need more. the problem here is bad parenting. that's why these students are falling behind because their parents are lazy, derelict. they put them in front of the computers all day long. don't encourage reading and don't discuss things with the children. for a teacher, very hard to overcome that. >> as you know in the education chapter in our book, we say this is a collective problem. my wife is a school teacher. mi' wife taught in d.c. i think the reform efforts like we have seen in d.c. and other parts of the country to find better teachers and incentivise them. >> bill: what happened to michelle rie who did that? the superintendent in d.c. was fired by a liberal mayor who wanted to control the school system. i are in a big battle there. >> her successor who follows her beliefs was kept on. bill, important point we also add in our book is as you know
