that's fantastic and hilarious. >> thanks very much to our producers and editors that put that together. can you imagine going through all those tapes and coming up with five minutes? thanks so much. in the meantime, we have to talk a little politics, folks, because today at 10:30 eastern time, the president is set to unveil his deficit plan. now, we already know some of the sneak peeks of this. it's going to be $1.5 trillion in revenue. >> right. >> a lot of that is going to be the buffet rule or the bt$1.5 t? who is ready for some new taxes? >> like gretchen said, the millionaire's tax or since it is breakfast time, let's call it the buffet rule, then on savings about a quarter of a trillion dollars in medicare spending. interestingly enough, apparently, the president will suggest no changes in social security. >> right. >> and also when it comes to the iraq-afghanistan withdraw, he's going to list it there. how much he plans on going down, we're going to talk with ollie

north in about 10 minutes about that and what it would mean for the actual war effort which we still are hoping to win both and then the biggest story, i think, is the warren buffet rule which you're about to hear is somewhat deceptive. it is that billionaires are paying less, it's that they're still paying their 35%. it's the capital gains is what's there and the investment money in which they're being taxed 15%. >> the analogy that warren buffet always makes is why should my secretary pay more taxes that beta taxes than i do? that's not really a fair comparison. he's paying his tax on capital gains. he makes most of his money on his investment income. that's at 15%. it's comparing apples and oranges, not the income that you're making on a daily basis when you go to work. >> so many people say is it really a good idea to raise taxes during what sure seems or feels like a double dip recession and what the president will unveil later on today as well is that the taxes will go

on to the shoulders of the job creators and the most successful people in this country but ultimately, if the president is talking about raising taxes and, you know, effectively class warfare, wouldn't it make more sense to be talking aut total tax reform or like herman cain's plan, the 9, 9, 9 make it simple going forward. >> i want you to hear bill clinton and paul ryan both weighed in yesterday. he's back in the limelight and they both weighed in on this very issue about the president's plan forward and paul ryan's feeling of disappointment because of what it contains. let's listen. >> i don't think that'such a draconian thing. basically asking us to return to the tax rates of the 1990's for the wealthiest americans who have been the big beneficiaries of this last decade which has been very tough on the middle class and low income people. >> what he forgets to mention on that, that's double tax. taxes on money that's been taxed before based on income.

people who is paying an income tax, paying the first level of tax and then when you pay a capital gains and dividends tax, you're paying a tax again on that money. >> ultimately going forward, what this presents is a clear alternative for the voters coming up a year from now in november where are you for the party that wants to raise the tax or for the party that wants to draw a line in the sand and say no new taxes on anybody. >> you see the audience around us? a bunch of very attractive people, can i add? >> yeah. > >> ali has been sent down in the audience. are you ok? >> i'm ok at the moment. i'm surrounded by 80,000 of my closest friends including these two. what time did you get up this morning? >> 3:30. >> why did you want to be here? >> because you're here. you got up at 3:30. i can beat that.

north. have you heard of this guy? >> you had a chance to talk to some of the men and women serving right behind you. >> i am. heroes right there. >> in iraq. >> so they all said this, many of them have served in iraq and afghanistan. where do you see us when we look at the global picture right now? lately there was the announcement we were going to lower the troops in iraq to 3,000. august is the deadliest month in afghanistan. where do we stand? >> first of all, they are american heroes and though our colleagues often don't say it, the war in iraq has been won. the war in afghanistan is being won and the worst thing we could do is pull out before the victory is complete. it's the real bottom line of it and i know there's a lot of -- a lot of anxiety over where we're going. but the reality of it is the number of troops we have in a place like iraq or afghanistan ought to be determined by our goals and objectives in those

countries and then resources necessary to accomplish that devoted to it. it's been a decade of war. and i've covered them ever since it began. it first started at fox news 10 1/2 years ago, originally going to just do documentaries and then boom, 9/11. >> how many times you been to iraq and afghanistan? >> 21 times. >> 21 times, you've seen this war. you were down on it a year ago and in july, you were very optimistic, even with the troop withdrawal that things are going to turn around and we're going to indeed make history. >> in fact, we were on it together when we were over there in may, june and july talking about it, i think, the announcement was made when i was over there and what i've concluded is we've now brought the afghan national security forces to a level i could not have imagined would be possible. >> 300,000? >> almost 300,000 well trained, the number of casualties goes up because the bad guys, the taliban, al-qaida, their affiliates in pakistan and the iranians all know the united states is not pulling out. let's hurt them as bad as we

can. probably the worst thing we could do is to announce what we can do and tell the enemy our war plan. >> with the election coming up in a little more than a year, do these wars now become politicized even more? >> yes. and there's no doubt that there's an enormous political dimension to this, gretchen, what you now have, of course, is a very politicized war and, of course, now people looking to washington how do you cut the defense budget? well, that's the quickest way you can do it, get the troops out. >> that shouldn't be a republican or democratic issue. you cannot cut defense and you cannot cut intelligence in this era. but colonel, how disturbed are you? if you look at the g.o.p. debate last week, everybody except mitt romney was talking about pulling out and scaling back and leaving it to the eye afghanistan and iraqis. >> given an enormous investment of treasure and blood that we've put into this war, it would be a tragedy. it ought to be concerned unconscionable for us to pull out. >> should we let them win? can we just allow them to go out -- >> they can win. if they're allowed to, they'll

thank you for doing that. thanks to all of you guys for being here this morning. great to have you here! thank you so much. we'll be talking to these guys all morning. back over to you guys. steve, gretchen and brian. >> thank you very much, ali. all right, we have to do some headlines now. we're starting with a fox news alert. while you were sleeping, british police arrested seven people. six men and one woman in a massive, that, is anti-terror operation. this is in birmingham. the men accused of preparing a terror attack in the u.k., the woman arrested for withholding relevant information in the case. at this hour, police are searching six homes and one business there. in other news, investigators now say the plane that crashed at an air show in reno was radically modified to make it faster but then less stable. the pilot and eight people on the ground were killed. 69 others were hurt when it slammed into the ground like a missile. a camera mounted to the plane and memory cards found at the crash site could detail exactly what went wrong. it's believed a broken piece of

had that joint session of congress, he called everybody into the room and said now, i'm going to lay forward my plan. it will not be class warfare. it's class warfare. >> yeah, in fact, former clinton advisor mark penn who came in in 1994 to right the ship after the midterms, said one of the first things he did at the white house is to strip out the class warfare language that bill clinton habeen using and when you start to see the clinton administration take a turn for the better and his popularity improves. >> that's so interesting and speaking of bill clinton, he was back on the airways yesterday talking about his global nish initiatives but also weighing in on the president's plan. take a listen to this. >> i think it's a very good program that he outlined and i think if the congress seriously takes him up on it and they start trying to work through it and get anything approaching the amount of activity that was recommended, they can put about 2% more on the gdp growth of the coming year and they can drop

unemployment between one and two million. >> mr. president, taking that -- >> they can create one to two million jobs. >> so what do you think of that? >> a little bit hard to hear him but i got the gist of it. here's the thing, the clinton global initiative is a big deal. every year during the u.n. general assembly, he comes and does a lot of great work from all over the world. he was planning to be on the sunday shows. he doesn't want to necessarily be put in a position to have to defend president obama and his jobs plan or the deficit plan but that's the role he takes. it's kind of the luck of timing. you would expect him not to criticize it. i also know if you think about two months ago, he had a plan of his own. 14 ways to save the economy from bill clinton which did not necessarily jive with what president obama was proposed. >> not at all. he was very respectful of congressman ryan's plan, he said let's debate it unlike president obama who in april mocked him. i got to ask you this, bill clinton and the book, one of the things larry summers is reported as saying, is this wouldn't have

i believe whoever win this is will be the next president of the united states. >> gretchen: so the people who don't necessarily, they're all -- they'll all be on the list. but the people who don't advocate the fact they're on the straw poll, they want lower expectations? >> this is an expectation game. they want to say if they don't win, they didn't really try. whoever wins this, they're going to be the next president. they're going to be the ones that have the jobs plan and turn the country around. >> gretchen: let's talk about the importance of florida in general. i know you're making a link between the temperature poll and who becomes president, but florida has been such a key state in the past. it seems even more important now. how do you see? >> you have to win florida. you can not win the presidency if you don't win florida. we have almost 19 million people, diverse state. we've got every demographic group in the country. it will be the first big primary. all the primaries that will be ahead of us will be smaller in total than we are. so you've got to win florida and get our delegates. we'll probably be fifth in the primaries. so you have to win. you have to win in florida.
