why president obama does not seem to want to solve the economic dilemma. that's the subject of this evening's talking points memo. reports today say that greece is about to default on its obligations, go into bankruptcy. why? very simple. greece is an entitlement state and the government spent so much money, they can't possibly pay its debts. here in america, we have a similar situation. our government is spending so much money, we can't pay our debts either. but because the usa generates trillions of dollars in revenue, people keep lending us money. raising another ponzi scheme scenario. you remember that, right? now, we borrow, they lend. we run up more debt. ponzi scheme. you would think president obama's first priority would be to drastically cut spinning, right? get the deficit under control by eliminating expenditures the country can't afford. but as john belushi once opined, no! the president wants a balanced approach to getting the debt under control. revenue enhancement, along with a few cuts, nothing drastic,
5:02 pm
mind you. but is the balanced approach fair, so to speak? from 2007 and 2010 when the democrats controlled congress, america added $5.2 trillion to the debt. a record setting amount in a nearly four-year time period. that's directly on nancy pelosi, harry reid, barak obama and george w. bush. democratic party embraced the spending and presidents bush and obama go along with it. finally, we the people are beginning to understand, you can't do that. you must live within your means or economic disaster will bite you. president obama wants us to believe that by taxing the rich he can begin solving the enormous economic problems we have. the government is already taxing the rich. according to the tax policy is there, the very few households making more than a million dollars a year in this country will pay an average of 29% federal income tax. households making between 50 and $75,000 will pay 15%. households making between 20 and 30,000 will pay just 6%.
5:03 pm
even if mr. obama is successful in raising the tax rate on the wealthy, he's not going to get much money. there are about 315 million americans and just 230,000 homes bringing in more than a million bucks a year. so it's a ruse, a class warfare illusion. taxing the rich is not going to make much of a difference. what will make a difference is reforming the entire tax code to collect more money. modifying the medicaid and medicare systems, and 10% cut across the board on all government expenditures. if that would happen, america's economy would soar. money would pour in here from all over the world. unemployment would drop. business would expand and happy economic days would be here again. if the feds do not pass spending, greece is the word. an apology to frankie valli., that's a memo. reaction joining us from a rock and a hard place duo.
5:04 pm
monica, the class warfare mantra is what president obama is going to run on. there is no question about that. we all know that. even colmes knows that. >> no. >> i think it may work. i think that there are enough 47% of all american homes don't pay any federal income tax. >> it's actually 37, 48% pay no federal income tax. >> that's a lot of people. >> but here is the flaw in the strategy, bill. the united states of america is an aspirational society. so even if you are working at a minimum wage job, you aspire to the next step and then the next step. we aspire to be the rich if we are not currently the rich. >> why does the democratic party -- that's the philosophy. why then does the democratic party continue to rack up huge numbers in the african-american communities, hispanic communities, the poorer precincts in america go democrat almost exclusively.
5:05 pm
>> because their philosophy and the stated philosophy of this president, which he told us point-blank in 2008 when he was running when he said to joe the plumber, i any when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody. the party and this president are committed wealth redistributionists. >> that's where they're going to run. you say it's not going to work. >> like your talking about the african-american communities and some others benefits from that, disproportionately to everybody else. but it is a fundamentally anti-american proposition. >> philosophically -- >> because you're taking away the element of self-reliance. >> you haven't convinced me it's not going to work. >> politically it might work, with certain communities. >> that's what he's banking on. >> no, you're limiting it just to his base. >> no, i want the numbers. >> in the more broad electate, the independents and others, forget it. >> is it going to work? >> yes. i tell you why. first of all, he is not playing class warfare. he's fighting against their class warfare. he's fighting against class

5:07 pm
independents turned against him? >> independents turned against him overall. if you ask people and say do you like his policies, yes or no? when the individual policy, 70%, let me give you actual numbers of independents favor providing federal money to state governments. 63% of independents favor increasing federal spending to building roads and bridges. 53% favor -- >> so you say class warfare is going to work. >> if him fighting class warfare will work. >> we have the evidence for that. that is the lack of support for the massive redistributionist programs called obamacare. you have 60% of the american people who want that thing repealed. why? because they understand that health care was never a bad health care. health care under this president, bad democrat congress, redistributing the wealth. >> let me move on. colmes, you know the greece situation. you following that? >> yes. >> it's in europe. you know where it is? you take a left at italy and there you go.
5:08 pm
those people are out of the game. out of the game right now. they'll have to be bailed out by other countries. united states, the reason we're not greece is because we still can generate money and greece can't. nobody is going to invest in greece. not even zorba. they live in cypress. so i'm just amazed that you don't see the policies that you yourself personally have championed in the last 15 years on this network failed so dismally. >> what you and others don't see, conservatives don't see that trickle down doesn't work. doing things to help the rich -- >> your policies failed. >> but so have reagan policies. >> so have reagan policies. so i, alan colmes failed and so did reagan. >> i have not failed in my analysis. >> you championed these. >> we'd be more progressive were it not for the blue dog democrats. >> we should have had more spending. >> we should have more spending, more investment, more stimulus. >> i don't know what to say. >> i know.

5:13 pm
good poll. historically good poll, small sample, 439 republicans, republican leaners. romney, 7. ron paul, 13. and that's a very hard core vote, 13. but michelle bachman sliding all the way down to 5%. why do you think she slid? >> i think rick perry. the bottom line here is she's the best candidate in this field. i watched a lot of candidates over my 40 years in politics. she's an enormous candidate and very, very strong on the stump. she won the straw poll which no one expected her to do. she's a great retail politics. our game plan was always to win iowa. >> bill: then why, if she's so good and i agree with you, i've always said she waged very, very good campaign. her personally. then why did perry destroy her support? she's down more than 50%. >> it's not over yet. i think when you look at a national poll, it basically indicates people from all over the country. when you throw texas into a national poll, it's 10% of the

population. so a guy that's from texas, obviously has a big impact. i'm not saying perry is not a strong candidate. i'm just telling you michelle, our strategy was always for her to win iowa. win the iowa caucus. she didn't expect to win the straw poll. in seven weeks she came in and won. what we did in the straw poll is built an enormous organization that's still there. my sense is she's going to be very competitive. >> bill: in iowa, though? >> iowa is important because it basically will narrow down the field and give her an opportunity as it did huckabee. >> bill: you say she still has a chance. >> i'm saying she can win iowa. she wins iowa, she's still in this race. since 1980, whoever wins two out of the three, south carolina, new hampshire, iowa, goes on. >> bill: that's interesting because romney a lock in new hampshire. he's a hometown guy and he'll get that. and south carolina is a game breaker. so when you see the whole field here and another debate on thursday, as i mentioned, you say that perry right now and romney are the two guys that are
5:15 pm
going to fight it out. in the national poll, perry doesn't defeat barak obama. but romney does. what does that tell you? >> it tells that you perry has great support among the republican base, the conservative, tea party, evangelical. basically romney has an ability to track independent voters in a general election. but i go back to the point, no poll today matters. four years ago, rudy guiliani was leading in all 50 states. didn't get a delegate. leading in every single state, every national poll. fred thompson jumped into the race. he was leading in every single poll. john mccain's campaign had self-destructed. he was very much like michelle down to five, 10, the maximum. he went on, took new hampshire, won that. mike huckabee -- >> bill: it's a different time. >> no, why is it a different time? >> bill: i'll tell you why. because john mccain had basically the background and the credibility to run for president, whereas michelle and rick perry have to prove
