improve, and he got much worse. he had two or three dreadful answers. i do think the immigration comment hurt him, i think it was the tone and how well he handled questions. and again that's the bad news. there's also good news in this. again, i go back to the analogy of this is like an olympic diving trailer, and we're all watching these things in a different way wekig/pñfníñ 6'wt /ñá#xacp;xuçco#d mú w2( at the end of each debate and rate each one. it's entirely possible for governor perry to come back. he will need to have a very good set of debate october. he can't have a so-so debate and a good debate. he's got to have two really good debates. he also has to show a good fundraising number here on october 15th. look, he comes from a big state. he's raised a lot of money for hisd" ÷wny,wå-o#a di 1ç0c9y money for the republican governors association. he'll probably be able tipoffs a pretty good number. >> greta: isn't it significant in spite of how much i realize how different each day can be in

the political season, isn't it significant that mr. herman cain, who doesn't have the huge money, doesn't have the huge machine, and won the florida straw poll and he's getting a lot of the attention by people and at least for the moment he seems to connect with might appreciate it's a simplified way of looking at taxes which is something that really rubs a lot of republicans the wrong way. >> yeah. look, you touched on the good points. again, though, though, i would make the point until we start seeing him moving in the early states, like iowa, new hampshire, south carolina, and we see some durability for this -- /gda9 'u7@hq.n)@duf s9fá-hwr eff& through this exercise a couple times this season. we had the michele bachmann who won the iowa straw poll, jumped in the polls and now has dwindled away. we had governor perry come in and jump to a c lead, and now in the fox poll he's fallen back into second place. i suspect we're likely to see the same thing for herman cain, because he had a really good debate performance won the florida straw polls and then it will be three weeks, between the

does this healthcare in massachusetts, or his statements about it being a conservative idea, this mandate do those statements ever come back to haunt him in the primary season? >> well look, the president has already said this any number of times. in fact as recently as the bus trip last month the president was sa 1 ç!ú b9n all we did in washington is what they did in massachusetts. look, governor romney has a chips. he gets to either have a debate with president obama about how his plan is different than president obama's or he gets to have a debate with fellow republicans over the issue. if i were him i'd be having the debate with president obama. now, he started to say -- to have tha t debate earlier this month when he was on with south carolina senator jim demint. the third debate where he started to describe some of the differences between massachusetts and washington but it's a debate that's better for him to have sooner rather than later. it's better for him to have the debate with president obama it is to have a debate with eight republicans on a stage in some

thinks he has a deep and enduring problem with democrats. he really doesn't. take a look at this. in a matchup with governor6ñ?ñ?ñ romney, today barack obama carries 88% of democrats -- 85% of democrats. and againstécz9r9-6gereyf now he can do better, but not a whole heck of a lot better. those are pretty good numbers for where we find ourselves at this point in the race. if i were him i wouldn't be worried about those people. he can get them back easily. i'd be worried about the swing voters. instead he's adopting language and an approachktñ?ñ? that will turn them off. >> greta: then why in your op-ed does g&nnñ2 s çún@iwny@%eup> i didn't say he should feed them. i said he has two strategies, one is a positive and optimistic vision energizing the democrats, allowing him to go after the swing voters, or the other strategy, which he's adopted, feed the red meat to the democratic voters, the moveon.org kind of people, and

>> greta: so we're going to see numbers soon? >> we're going to get numbers. if you look at recent ones, where the economy showed no job growth in august the unemployment rate didn't rise. when you see that the rate should rise about 100,000 jobs per month just to keep pace with growth in the population of the country. >> greta: one of the latest reports lists highest metropolitan area rates in august 2011 in el centro california yuma california 29.4%. merced 17.5%. yuba city 17% stockton 16.1%. why is california just leading the pack in terms of unemployment? >> well, some of the things are actually from that rate dropped so it's not that great news when they're seeing it at high levels. if it drops it doesn't mean much for them. these are all cities that are

california nevada arizona florida, they're all in the pack of the worst unemployment. they're hit by the housing crisis. and when hit by housing crisis it means fewer construction jobs available they're not going to see rebound in the construction industry and people are trained in that area. some cities as well as el centro being the places that are having any agricultural sector. so when harvest season comes around sometimes it picks up a little bit. they're just dealing with too many blows at one time. >> greta: the thick about this housing crisis is that if you're underwater and lost a job in town and you find a job 100 miles away you can't afford to move. this added another layer to this in terms of ability to pick up yourself and try to get going. >> that is right.

the problem is that there are no easy solutions to dealing with this. everything that has been conceived usually includes throwing money at the problem. we've a lot of money already in trying to deal in terms of pumping up mortgage backers as well. when you deal with that problem to deal with it requires a lot more effort and money. there isn't political work force. >> greta: outside of the administration do you have conversation was business people who say administration is on the right track? >> some people think it is getting some of the things right. a lot of economists think that the economy needs more stimulus, and longer term deficit reduction dealing with longer -- as you know the health care problem that explodes the deficit down the road. if you disagree about cuts everyone agrees you need median and long term deficit reduction. on the same front best mix is
