announcement of sarah palin today, are you surprised? >> i'm not surprised. she's done as much to change the landscape in america since ronald reagan. she's done a lot to help elect conservatives in the house and senate. and we need to continue to do that. >> on a personal note, she's been beaten up so badly all the time, it's probably a good decision for her family. but i said last night on this program, whether she runs or not, she is going to have a major impact on not only this race, but on many races around the country because i have no doubt she's going to be out and about and campaigning and helping a lot of candidates all of whom will be seeking her support. >> sean, more than anyone else in the country today she helped convince americans that they could make a difference and if they got involved and active that they could take back their

country. so what happened in 2010 had a lot to do with sarah palin. and if she continues to do that, i think we are going to have an even bigger victory in 2012. >> what did you think of chris christie's announcement? >> probably best for the field. i liked his boldness and courage in taking on the teachers' unions. but now i think our field is packed with good candidates. i think we have a lot of strengths there and i'm just going to wait for the next two or three months to see how this plays out before i consider getting involved with it myself. >> look, i've never believed the media narrative that this is a weak field. i don't believe that at all. a report out today, 47-41, generic republican beats obamas. president's approval rating now in the 30s. no president this late this his term except harry truman has

been able to overcome those poll numbers. the economy is getting worse, it's not getting be/!)%ey as you look at the candidates, a lot of people speculating there might be an intramural battle, i think a healthy one between more, quote, establishment people and tea party candidates. do you agree with that narrative? >> no, i don't think you are going to have establishment versus tea party. i think most of the candidates that are running now, not just for president but the house and the president, realize that the political power in america for republicans and independents and even some democrats is coming from that grass roots level. and they are running on those basic themes of limited government, balanced budget. so i don't think you are going to have that tug of war you saw in the last elections. i'm seeing it in my work with the senate conservatives fund. most of the republicans running for office in primaries carry that same message that we've heard from the tea party and it's a basic republican message of limited government.

>> and the problem, it seems that the president has is that when he says people are not better off, he said it this week, than they were four years ago, and joe bidesen saying i don't blame people for being mad, we're in charge. that's not the promise they were making back in 2008. but all of the candidates, they want to repeal obama care, all of them want lower taxes, all of them want more energy dependence, all of them want less regulation, so it seems while there are distinctions it seems that they are on the right conservative path. do you agree with that? do you fear anything would change? >> i do. because i think they are reflecting what the mood of america is. america is focused on fiscal issues, they are focused on developing our economy by opening up energy supplies and rolling back regulations. so there's not a fine -- a lot of distinctions on positions. and that's good because republicans have been looking for that big tent, and i'm very happy that that big tent is on

the conservative side and that's really where a lots of americans are going right now. >> let me ask you this. , does it matter to you or how much does it impact you, for example, governor romney has to answer romneycare, governor perry has to answer his immigration policy and tuition breaks for illegal immigrants. herman cain has to answer, well, he never held political office, newt gingrich has to answer for everything that happened when he was speaker. should that be the deciding issue, what happened in the past or what they are saying now? >> i think we need to look at their principals, their character, we need to look at the level of courage they have in articulating a position and ideas for the future. sure, we need to look at what they have demon the past. i'm not concerned if someone has changed their position. i led the effort to kill earmarks. we have to convince a lot of people in washington to change their positions because we've got to change the direction of the country. so i'm looking for what the

the top of the field. what do you make of how this keeps going up and down? >> i think at this moment it's mitt romney's race to lose. i don't discount either herman cain or rick perry. so anything can happen in this race. this is a very interesting year where anything could go on. i think if rick perry delivers a great debate performance next week that he can rebound. >> he can recover? >> yeah, and you can have a two-man or a three-way race in a protracted way going through next june. >> and marco rubio today, which i thought was the natural choice for anybody to be vice president," and i think he will be president some day, he said no, he's not running if he's asked. >> and he said no, he's out? >>ive to say i was very excited today, more so than up to this point for the election because now we are getting a little morrow clarity. you are knowing who is in, who is out and at the same time while we are getting the polls about president obama's administration and he's really falling in the polls.

how long until what is happening in europe will come to america? how long will it take? >> well, it depends what you do about it in subsequent elections. the thing you could most do to help, when i was last in washington d.c. i think i appeared on your program, and the german chancellor was in town, and barack obama said we are going to help you with giving our own share of the loan through the imf and so on. the way you could really help would be to get your own debt under control and to start living within your means. the world relies more than anybody likes to admit on the competitive necessary and pros sparety of the u.s. economy. if you really wanted to help, you know, sort out that problem at home. bring down borrowing, bring down spending and debt levels and all of us will reap the benefits. >> it's one of those what we call choice elections. there are two very distinct, visions for the country. i assume you are following some of what is happening in the american political scene, but i

imagine if the economy remains in the current condition, in spite of the promises by the president to overcome these problems, that he will be a one-term president, and i think we will have austerity measures, we will see these things happen. but even at this point with america 14-plus trillion dollars in debt, i figure that problem is enormous in and of itself. i don't know how we get out of that. >> right. and it's not going to be something that you can fix with tinkering around the edges, cutting one or two programs here or there. there has got to be a fundamental rethink aimed at bringing the budget back into balance within a couple of years, not within the next 40 years or whatever the republicans in congress are talking about. we don't have that length of time to play with, i'm afray. the magnitude of our situation is worse than most of us alive have known before. yeah, it's even worse in some parts of the world like western europe. that's not going to help you very much.

>> the interesting thing to me is you are open-minded, and i'm not rubbing -- i'm not doing this to embarrass you, but you supported barack obama. you thought this was a good thing. what did you think you missed when you were watching him campaign and giving his speeches? what was missed? >> well, you know, part of that, to be honest, that i was incredibly underwhelmed by the republican party by 2008. they had become a party of big spending, big deficits, bailouts, nationalization so i thought how much worse can it get? well, i had no idea how much worse it could get. nobody had any idea at the 2008 election that the federal government would now be 30% bigger than it was four years ago. if i remember correctly, as a candidate, barack obama campaigned on the promise of tax cuts. well to put it as neutrally as possible, that hasn't worked out. >> generally speaking, all the

the. >> when did you first know about the program officially called, i believe, "fast and furious"? to the best of your knowledge, what date? >> i'm not sure of the exact date but i probably heard about "fast and furious" the first time over the last few weeks. >> republican congress is calling out eric holder he is not being honest in his testimony regarding testimony concerning "fast and furious." holder was informed about the controversial program as far back as july of 2010 according to e-mails. they they are calling for a special council to be pointed to determine if he lied under oath. the department of justice is defending his testimony. the statement reads "the attorney general's testimony to both the house and the senate was truly full. he said in march and may of this

year that he became aware of the questionable tactics employed in the "fast and furious" operation in early 2011 when atf agents first raised them publicly, and at that time he asked the inspector general's office. >> and before that, sarah palin is out. we want to get your reaction. >> i'm deeply disappointed. i think it would have been great to have another choice for grass roots conservatives in the race. but she gave her reasons for doing so, and i think there's no question that she will remain one of the most effective voices for grass roots conservetism in this country and there will be many, many candidates who will benefit as a result of the work she will do in the future. and i think all you have to do is look at all of the work that she's done over the last couple of years, not just for the tea party movement, but tea party candidates and other of her fellow republicans. so i say more power to you, more power to you, governor palin,

exploitation of that issue now going on. he's trying to shore up his immigration enforcement credentials and i think the question that tea party people have to ask, is this too little to late? is there a better choice in this race? all you have to do is look at a lot of the immigration enforcement report cards. there are better choices out there. herman cain has a great record and michele bachman does, for that matter. >> let me move on to operation "fast and furious." it was may, 2011 and eric holder said i probable heard about it in the last few we. the new documents show he was sent briefings on the fast and furious as far back as july of 2010, which directly contradicts his statement to congress. reaction? >> it certainly does. and i think that that soundbite, that clip needs to be plate over and over again. and seared into the public memory and into the public consciousness. you have these punks out in new

york city now trying to occupy wall street. what we really need to have in this country to fight corruption, we need to have an occupied justice movement. and the people who should be leading it or grass roots folks that care about national security, who care about the integrity and rule of law that's being warmed and perverted by this stonewalling justice department. the other thing that's very key now as these developments move fast and four russly, fast and feloniously, for that matter, it's not just the justice department. this is an administration-wide scandal. you have the state department that has yet to answer for its role in this, the dea, the drug enforcement agency, the department of homeland security and all of these agencies were named in some of those documents that point to the date as early as july and november, 2010. there's another revelation that just came down today from the project on oversight in

government, pogo, that says there are actually memos that were addressed to eric holdner early march, 2010 from the then deputy director, as well. >> so it's really, does all this evidence coming out now, so it's clear that the attorney general gave false statements on numerous occasions. now, you know, if you gave a false statement as a conservative and you had a libera prosecutor, why do i think you will be brought up on perjury charges? so i think the real question now is going to become what did holder know, when did he know it, why is he contradicting himself, and frankly, what did the president know about this? >> yes. and i think that a lot of people are going to be going back to his interview from earlier this spring when he said he didn't authorize the program that's correct holder didn't know about it. >> he bragged about it once. >> of course, of course. and i think another concrete question to ask is, is
